E-mail links won't open when Firefox is my default browser, Sup??

When Firefox is my default browser, links in my e-mail or web sites that open in my e-mail, do not open. Right clicking on the link doesn't do anything for me. When I click on the link the border of the page dims and brightens but no access to the linked page and no error messages. This requires me to use IE as my default browser, that opens links fine, which my whole psychic/genetic makeup abhors. It seems that no one knows what is wrong or how to fix the problem. I tried the chat room but was never able to get through and now it is removed. Is there ANY way to get an answer/solution to this problem?
PS My XP desktop computer Firefox works fine.

I still have this problem and now it is starting to affect the browsers functionality and useability. When Firefox is my default browser any link outside of Firefox won't open which is becoming a nuisance. I am running Windows 7 which may be the cause of the problem via a setting but I can't locate the needle in the haystack or it may have happened at a Firefox update. Firefox has been my favorite and only browser since Netscape 1.0 but if I can't resolve this problem I will have to switch to another which I really don't want to do. Help!!!

  • Numerous websites linked to desktop icons won't open with Firefox as my default browser, but will when I subsequently designate Internet Explorer as the default browser. However, when I select IE, I cannot open Firefox. How do I fix this? CharlieA

When I designate Firefox as my default browser, I cannot open any destop link to any website, except Mozilla. When I change that designation to Internet Explorer, I can open all destop linked websites, except for Firefox. What do I do?

Sometimes Windows gives you weird error messages when you click a link in another program or double-click a desktop shortcut. These messages usually occur only when Firefox was closed and has to be launched before the link can be loaded. Is that what you're getting? This occurs when Firefox's registry settings get crossed up, as described in this article: [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Windows_error_opening_Internet_shortcut_or_local_HTML_file_-_Firefox Windows error opening Internet shortcut or local HTML file - Firefox - MozillaZine Knowledge Base].
If that isn't it, what happens exactly?

  • Clicking on a link does not open firefox and take me to the page when firefox is my default browser but does when Internet Explorer is my default browser, what is wrong?

All of a sudden (I think after the last firefox update) links in other web pages won't open firefox to access the page when firefox is my default browser but works when I change my default browser to Internet Explorer and I can't figure out why. Help!!!

This problem just arose for me today. Very frustrating. Tried all of the suggestions here without success. Then a very simple solution came to me:
UNINSTALL CHROME. I haven't used Chrome for a long while anyway since it seems to have chronic problems of one sort or another. Firefox does 95% of what I need, and Internet Explorer can handle the other 5%.
After uninstalling Chrome I clicked a mailto link. It asked me what program to use and did not list Firefox as an option for some reason. In the Tools menu, I chose "Options" and went to the "Applications" tab. Searched for "mailto". There was a single entry - when Chrome was installed it gave me no options to switch. After uninstalling Chrome I was able to change that. It still did not list Firefox, but it did list "Gmail". Selecting that causes my Gmail to open in Firefox.
I have no idea whether Google or Microsoft is responsible for this, but I'm inclined to give the hairy eyeball to Google for this one. It's the sort of stunt they'd pull on Microsoft, then pretend it was just a mistake. Just one guy's opinion, of course.

  • I can't open web links in Excel or Word when Firefox is my default browser, but they links work when IE is my default browser. How do I open the links with Firefox as the default?

I recently downloaded Firefox and made it my default browser. Links I have in Excel and Word that used to open with a single click when IE was my default browser no longer work. When I switched my default browser back to IE the links work again.

  • Apple Mail links will not open in Firefox. The address bar and page are blank.

I have just upgraded Firefox to version 4.0 and when I receive an email with a link in it, the link will not work. Firefox will load but the page is blank and the web address bar will sometimes show the link and sometimes not. If I cut and paste the address from the email it will not work.

In mail.app preferences there is a setting for RSS that lets one choose which program is the default RSS reader. Whichever program is set to be the default RSS reader is used by mail.app to open any urls in mail messages.
I really like my Mac but this is the most un-userfriendly, un-"it just works" thing I've run across in the 23 years I've been using Macintosh...

From the Safari menu bar, select
              Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Extensions
Turn all extensions OFF and test. If the problem is resolved, turn extensions back ON and then disable them one or a few at a time until you find the culprit.

  • MSN Hotmail/email links won't open when clicked on

    email links go dead

    Win7 / FireFox 3.6.13 / Win Live Mail 2011
Tried setting IE8 to default internet app & surprise, surprise - Hyperlinks within Windows Live mail now open fine!
Set FF back to default app & hyperlinks DONT work again.
Tried setting .url association to poinr specifically to FF - still no go.
Hyperlinks do work fine when running Hotmail via the net instead.

  • When i click on links in other programs, where the link should automaticly open in firefox, nothing happens. Firefox is my primary.

    Example:
software for games, where developers post headlines for news. Those are actualy hyperlinks, and should automaticly open in firefox, when customer clicks on the headline. When i click on a headline, nothing happens. They just stopped working a while ago, which is pretty frustrating. Firefox is my primary web browser.
Please help, becouse I've searched and never found a solution for this issue.
Looking forward to your answer, thank you for reading this!

This is a known bug, and has been for years. It occurs when Firefox is your default browser and some glitch (or program) changes that default. Thankfully, there's a fairly easy fix, though it does involve monkeying around in the Registry.
(Note: These instructions apply to Windows Vista and 7 only.)
    1. Click Start, type regedit, and then press Enter.
    2. Navigate to the following entry: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\FirefoxURL\shell\open\ddeexec
    3. In the center pane, double-click the Default entry, then remove whatever value is there (it'll probably be a weird string of numbers and commas).
    4. Click OK, then exit Regedit.
    5. If Outlook and/or Firefox are open, close them, then restart them.

I am using windows 7 pro this issue has drove me crazy for some time, now finally it's fixed by doing the exact same steps as above, hope this works for everybody that is having this problem. I just had to share this with my fellow firefox users. :)

  • Link won't open in goddaddy website builder tool

Links won't open when I try to preview using Go daddy website builder tool. I contacted Go Daddy and they said the tool works as designed on their side and suggested that it may be a browser issue. My question is that is there anything I can do to check my browser settings (i.e. security , etc.) that may correct this issue? I also need to check which version of Firefox is installed, I believe my latest version is 6.0 , not sure?

Please post the link so we can look it over.

  • Firefox is my default browser but when I click on a link in mail it no longer will open.

Firefox is my default browser. It always opened links from email in Firefox. Now, suddenly, when I click on a link in email, it no longer opens. If I make Chrome default, it will open in that browser. I've tried switching back a couple of times after reboot, but links no longer open in firefox. I don't know what happened to change it.

  • When I click a link in email client (apple mail), it does not open in firefox. I have checked both Firefox and Safari and Firefox is the default browser.

When clicking a link in either apple mail or even from a word document, nothing happens.

Try to redo the default browser and make another browser like Safari the default and then let Firefox do it again.

  • Links from other programs won't open in Firefox

This has been asked a number of times before, but none of the answers worked for me. I have Firefox 26.0 (the most stable for me) and Thunderbird 24.6.0. After a computer crash and reloading both programs, I first noticed the problem with links from Thunderbird, both clicking and right clicking with "open in browser". But then I remembered trying to open help in MS word and Frontpage which are supposed to open from the internet.
I have checked that Firefox is the default browser, changed the file (none) file transfer protocol, then deleted it, etc. Nothing helps.

I now have FireFox 32.0.2 no joy. I have loaded ThunderBrowse which took care of Thunderbird but still can't load links from other programs. I fixed this before (other backups, I crashed my windows C drive and have been trying to restore), but can't remember how. I think it required reloading IE (I had deleted IE on my latest restore), but I have now done that with no joy.
When I click on a link from another program, nothing happens, and when I right click and am offered "open in browser" nothing happens, and when offered " copy browser link" it doesn't copy.
I tried resetting FireFox, no joy.
Noticed control panel "set program access" doesn't hold, always goes back to custom, and defaults to "uses default browser"!
    Please help!

  • Firefox won't open when I click on the icon. I've tried uninstalling so that I can reinstall, but it says I have to close firefox (which isn't open), so I'm stuck.

The problem: Firefox won't open when I click on the program.
Solutions tried: #1) I tried to uninstall the program so that I can download it again, but the screen shows the message "firefox must be clsoed.. to proceed with installation". However, firefox is not open.
#2) I tried to download firefox, thinking that possibly it would update and solve the problem. However, I get the same error message that "firefox must be clsoed.. to proceed with installation" Problem is that firefox is not open.
I've done a screen shot, so you can see that I do not have the firefox browser open.

Thanks for the reply. I tried repairing the permissions (as well as several other things like deleting the Finder preferences file), but no dice.
Given that the problem cropped up right after updating OS X on two separate machines, it's looking to me like it's just a bug that needs squashing at this point.
