E-mail messages randomly disappearing

If I select an e-mail message to read, the message is viewable for a second then the phone reverts back to the home screen. It's doing this on all of my accounts. It doesn't do this on all messages, just some. I've tried rebooting, disabling accounts, and deleting accounts, nothing works. It just started 36 hours ago.

Michael,
We had the same problem at my company just a few weeks ago. Here are some of the symptoms we experienced:
1. (Note this only happened to ONE of our email accounts--The one that receives the most emails out of any address in our company.)
2. The problem was happening on both Lion and Mountain Lion.
3. We had the same email account on multiple different systems at different times with the same "lost email" result.
4. When the email disappeared from Mail, it disappeared from Google Apps Gmail account as well.
5. Extreme amounts of confusion and frustration was ongoing.
We finally tried changing the password to our Gmail account and that became our solution. We have not experienced the problem since.
Similar to yourself, we couldn't figure out why it was Apple Mail specific and didn't seem to happen with any other third-party app.
After about a week, we even changed our password back to the original just to do a little testing after-hours. Same result. We lost every email that was in or coming in to our inbox. Needless to say we've stayed with the new password and its working well.
I would suggest heading over to your account settings ASAP to create a new password. Please let me know if that works for you! It would be very interesting to find out if this is a wide-spread problem/solution.
Blessings!

  • Mail messages window disappear when searching

    Hello,
I'm using Mail 8.0 on OS X 10.10 (14A389). With French language and localisation. This is something I already noticed in Public Beta.
I have my Sent folder selected (maybe it would happen with another). I start typing something in the search box. Then the whole main messages window disappear immediately. But Mail thinks it's still visible. Even search suggestions continues to show. Typing cmd+0 to hide/show the messages window does not help.
I have to restart Mail to get my messages window back.
This happens randomly. After restarting Mail I can search as usual without the window disappearing. But sometimes later it will happen again.
Anyone encounters this too? Is this known from Apple? Any better temporary workaround than restarting Mail?

It still happens and it really gets boring. I have Mail 8.0 (1990.1). It happens from any folder selected: Inbox, Sent, Smart Inboxes...
How could such a bug remain undetected and not fixed asap? Maybe it's a plot from Apple to get us to ditch Mail and instead buy Unibox, Sparrow or Airmail from the Mac App Store so they get more $$$ commissions?

  • Mail messages keep disappearing

I bought my mac about a month ago and am confounded by the mail program. Seems messages keep disappearing from my inbox and also from my sent items. This morning I sent a message that I needed to call up again but it had disappeared. I've searched everywhere for answers to this but can't figure out what's happening. Can someone help?
    Thanks
    alda

Since you are accessing two accounts with Mail, there is an Inbox mailbox for each account and the same for Drafts, Sent, Trash and Junk when Junk Mail is set to automatic.
Open Inbox be selecting the black triangle beside it pointing it down to reveal the Inbox mailbox for each account. Selecting an account's Inbox mailbox reveals messages received by that account only in the message list. Selecting Inbox reveals a "blended" Inbox mailbox for all accounts in the message list.
The same applies to Drafts, Sent, Trash and Junk (when Junk Mail is set to automatic) in the mailboxes drawer.
Since you are accessing an IMAP account with Mail, there is also an account named icon for the IMAP account at the bottom of the mailboxes drawer. This includes the server stored mailboxes for the account with the exception of the account's Inbox mailbox which is located under Inbox in the mailboxes drawer. Regardless the account type, the Inbox mailbox for each account is located under Inbox.
So now, which account is missing messages - the POP account or the IMAP account and from which mailbox - the account's Inbox mailbox, Sent mailbox or both?
Are you storing sent messages on the server for your IMAP account which is available under the Mailbox Behaviors tab for the account preferences?
There is no setting to remove messages from the server with an IMAP account. Mail is keeping the server stored mailboxes synchronized with the server.
In order to create a separate account in Mail provided by the same provider, the account must be an actual account which means the account has its own user name. An additional email address that shares the same user name, incoming mail server and password as a primary email account is called an alias and you cannot create an alias address as a separate account in Mail due to the account and associated mailbox filing structure at the Finder level.
To add a alias email address to the primary account, go to Mail > Preferences > Accounts and under the Account information tab for the account preferences at the Email Address field, add the alias email address in this field separated by a comma from the primary account's email address. Save the changes when prompted.
All messages addressed to the alias address will be deposited in the primary account's Inbox mailbox and when wanting to send a message with the alias email address, select the address via the Account selection pop-up when composing a message.

  • Message 'randomly' disappears and is gone

    Hello,
This happened once last fall and has happened twice in the past week or so. I think it is rare, but it could also happen to messages I'm just archiving and I would not notice.
The problem: In Mail, I click on a folder to go to that pile of email, and a message header is visible for a moment and then is gone. Please let me elaborate. In the Mail window, I see the Sender, the Subject line, date and time. This morning I went to look at a copy of an email I sent last night, and I opened my Sent Folder. I saw the email at the top of the list (sorted so most recent is at the top) and then it disappeared. I hadn't pressed any keys. It wasn't there as a deleted message. There was nothing to undo. After a few minutes I logged on to the web interface to the IMAP server and the message was gone. I have the reply already, so I can get the text another way. But the idea that a message just disappears is pretty bad. It seems linked to clicking on a folder in the Mail Message Viewer. I should say that I was looking for some other messages last night too, and couldn't find them, so it may have happened frequently recently.
I am connecting to a UW IMAP server (at UW, coincidentally) with SSL. Right now I'm using a MacBook Pro with an updated installation of Tiger, but this also happened last year on my PowerBook G4, so I don't think it is an Intel based problem. I had contacted UW computer support to see if they had any ideas, and they told me to use Thunderbird. I tried it, but I like Mac Mail much better when this doesn't happen.
I don't have the slightest idea how to diagnose this. I looked for settings to toggle in Preferences, but did not see anything. Is there a way I can collect information flowing between Mail and the server to see where the delete command is coming from? Any suggestions or thoughts you might have will be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time.
    Brian

    Hello Brian.
It looks like the messages are being removed from the server for some reason, and this is what causes them to disappear from Mail when it synchronizes with the server as a result of you trying to view the contents of the mailbox.
Mail is probably initially showing the cached contents and this could be what causes the visual glitch. It doesn't necessarily mean that the message is being deleted at that time. It could be that the message has already been removed from the server for some reason, but Mail doesn't realize it until you tell it to show the mailbox contents.
I don't know what might be causing those messages to be removed from the server, though, unless you've accessed this account from another computer...

  • HELP - The content in my mail messages has disappeared

HELP -I've been trying to organize hundreds of messages (sent and received) so I've been creating mailboxes and submailboxes, without problem except for the occasional (you can not move this mail) message which I have not understood.
I just created a submailbox and moved about 50 messages there which had a common topic. All of the messages are listed in the top window (with title date and time received), but the contents are gone. The only thing in the lower window is the same message for each email:
"The message from Executive Producer <[email protected]> [OR WHOEVER THE SENDER IS] concerning “studio feasibility?” [OR WHATEVER THE TITLE OF THE MESSAGE IS] has not been downloaded from the server. You need to take this account online in order to download it."
HELP. Are these messages gone forever? Can I get them back? What did I do wrong?
PS - I'm still receiving new messages, so the account is online. And the messages are from a few different accounts to a few different email addresses of mine (and vice versa), but they are all blank.

    Ernie,
Mail allows the same folder to behave as both a mailbox and as a parent folder for other folders. Each aspect of this duality is supported by a different folder in the filesystem (.mbox suffix for the mailbox, no suffix for the parent folder), even though it appears as a single folder in Mail.
When the user creates a new folder by means of Mailbox > New Mailbox, Mail assumes it’ll be used as a mailbox (as the name of the command indicates) and the .mbox variant is created in the filesystem. If the user later creates or moves other folders within this folder, Mail creates the no-suffix variant in the filesystem and puts the subfolders there, but nothing appears to change in Mail itself.
Folders appear blue in Mail as long as there exists an associated .mbox folder in the filesystem, regardless of whether a corresponding folder without suffix exists as well. Only folders that don’t have an associated folder with an .mbox suffix in the filesystem appear white in Mail. That is, a folder appears blue in Mail as long as it can behave as a mailbox (i.e. store messages of their own), and white if it can only be used as a parent folder for other folders.
Problem is, Mail doesn’t handle this duality very well. I always recommend users to use each folder as either a mailbox or as a parent folder, but not both. From what I’ve seen reported here many times, “taking advantage” of the duality is calling for trouble, e.g.:

  • My e-mail messages are disappearing from my inbox after only three days and I don't know where they are going or how to retrieve them and need help with this!

THe messages are not in my archives and I don't delete them as soon as I get them. Where in the world are they going? I needed a number of them in order to make appropriate responses, and they are no longer in my inbox!

  • All my g-mail messages disappeared that were stored in folders.  How can I retrieve them?

I Have an i-Mac, iPhone and an IPad.  All my stored g-mail messages have disappeared.  How can I get them back.

If you had an IMAP mail account then all your emails are stored on the server, so install Thunderbird and create the IMAP mail account to see folders and emails on the server.
If you had a POP mail account then all of your emails were stored on the computer and you should have been creating regular backups of your Profile folder or at least created a backup of your Profile (and any other documents / images etc on your computer ) before wiping the computer/reformatting and reinstalling OS. So you can use the backup to reinstall the Profile. If you used MozBackup tool to create the *.psv file, then reinstall MozBacktool and use it to restore the Profile.
    * Backup: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_backup
If you did not create a backup of the Profile, but backed up/saved emails as .eml files saved to an external device, then you could use this addon to put those .eml files back into the new Profile.

  • Sent mail messages disappearing randomly, do you know why?

I had this HUGE bug in the past, but was fixed (at least for me) with Lion. Now it's back.
When I send a mail message sometimes, randomly, the message is sent BUT not showing in the sent folder or elsewhere. The message simply disappears.
This is not acceptable, I NEED to keep track of my sent messages!
This is a deal breaker, I'm forced to move to Thunderbird or something else, at least for a while, until this bug is tracked and fixed again.
    Any suggestion?

Hi James, thank you for helping.
I'm using Apple Mail 6.1 with IMAP on an italian provider (Aruba). My problem is only with Apple Mail, my iPhone and my iPad are ok. I'm using iCloud as a secondary email with no issues (at least for what I can see).
If I check via web browser I can't see the sent message, but I know it was sent.
This issue is very random. After the update to 10.8.2 I had 2 messages gone. I had the same problem with both Leopard and Snow Leopard, was fixed with Lion (same Mac, same email provider).
This is a console entry with an error message:
28/09/12 09:18:44,118 Mail[38324]: Error (null) occurred while trying to append messages to outgoing store. Ignoring and proceeding with delivery...

  • MBA lion Mail issue: window disappears randomly

    hello:
Having some MBA 13' mail issues:
    1) mail window will disappear (only using cmd+0 shortcut will bring it back - or going to window>message viewer) randomly without any reason
    2) starting up a new email or new note then closing this note or email will close the entire message viewer window...why?
    3) emails deleted within the 'inbox' section will not delete in the Gmail section (setup as IMAP, with Gmail defaults)
I am a little concerned with 1 & 2 becuase these are huge user experience issues, it is the most frustrating thing to have to continually use the short cut to open up a window which should not have disappeared in the first place!!
any help would be appreciated, thanks in advance!

    Hi Fred
I've got the same issue. It seems to happen randomly but so annoying when it does. Upgrading to Mountain Lion hasn't helped and I've changed my keyboard and reset all the short-cuts to the default settings and still it happens in Mail and Microsoft Outlook for Mac when I'm typing a mail.
    Did you find a solution?

  • Mail has random messages appearing in trash

The problem I found is a serious bug that I've had for a long time. On occasion, I'd go to the trash and find random messages I'd never deleted in there. Sometimes rebuilding the trash mailbox would make it go away, sometimes it wouldn't. If it didn't, I'd simply empty the trash, thinking it was just misplaced garbage. Sometimes the message would disappear after emptying and sometimes it would stay right there, requiring two or three attempts to get rid of it. Sometimes I had to select it specifically to delete it while the generic empty trash would fail to get rid of it.
I decided recently to double check those messages and found the messages were real saved messages that were both simultaneously in the trash and in the proper mailbox and not just old mail I had gotten rid of long ago. Trying to drag the message in the trash back to its proper folder wouldn't work as it wouldn't highlight the folder, preventing me from moving the message back. Oddly enough, right-clicking and selecting move does work and the message vanishes from the trash.
The distressing fact was that I found the messages in the trash weren't random garbage after all. If I were to empty the trash, the same message would also vanish from the original mailbox!?? I'd been deleting messages I wanted to save for months, not realizing I was getting rid of the real thing. Yes, it was careless of me not to check when the problem first started cropping up.
One odd thing I noted just recently was that while the duplicate trash messages can appear from any mailbox, the last several were all dated September 18, 2008 even though they had come from different mailboxes (note all mailboxes I save messages in are IMAP folders on MobileMe). Some of the messages that appeared mysteriously in the trash were even Apple RSS messages that Apple Mail tracks by default.
Has anybody seen this and does anyone have any idea how to stop this from happening? I've rebuilt my mailboxes any number of times and it doesn't seem to fix this problem.

I'm not sure how this message appears twice, but I definitely did not hit "post message" twice. It did take about five minutes before it posted, though.

  • How to set iPhone so Mail messages in inbox disappear after being downloaded to Mail on my MacBook Pro

    Hi -
Previously, the Mail settings on my iPhone and MacBook Pro were set exactly as I wanted them to be: If I opened a Mail message on my phone, it stayed in the inbox only until I opened the Mail App on my MacBook Pro, at which time it downloaded onto the notebook and disappeared from the iPhone.  This is how I want it, as I have no need for duplicate emails in multiple locations.
I recently had to reformat the hard drive on the MascBook Pro and reinstall all the software and data.  Unfortunately, I was not able to save the Mail preferences, and now my Mail App works differently: Mail messages remain on both the iPhone and the Mac, and if I delete a message on one device it also disappears from the other.
Can anyone help me to figure out how to get the settings and preferences back to the way they were originally?  Thanks for any information anyone can provide.
    Shelly

Are you using Mac Mail - the icon that looks like a stamp?
If yes, you can create Mailboxes. (click on Mailbox in the menu bar and select New Mailbox...) These are folders and are visible in Mail.
You store the mail you wish to archive in appropriate folders.

  • Mail messages disappear - just a blank mail message for all emails

Mail messages disappear - just a blank mail message for all emails.
This happens sporadically since I upgraded to Yosemite 10.10.2.
It happens on all of my machines (Macbook Air, + iMacs) so it must be a software bug.
Is there an update coming through for Mail?

Back up all data. Rebuild the mailbox.
