E-mail migration

I need to know how can I migrate my e-mails from "Windows Mail" to Apple Mail software... my software has ~100 thousand messages. Every time i try to import them (to Gmail, Outlook or whatever), i give up because it takes too much time to accomplish this... weeks actually.
I want to buy my first macbook, but before the final decision, i need to know if i can be successfull doing this...
Can anyone help me?

Well, as far as I can see it, you have two potential issues.  Exporting from Windows Mail, and importing into Mac Mail (or some other mail client).  Have you successfully exported the information from your Windows Mail client yet?  If you haven't already done that yet, you might want to consider exporting in "smaller chunks" and not trying to export the whole thing as a single export file.
When you are ready to import into the client on the Mac side, it will work much better if you ar eimportign smaller groups rather than trying to import everything  all at once.  Apple Mail will import mail from several well known mail application formats (Apple Mail, Netscape/Mozilla, Thunderbird, Eudora, and "mbox format").  On my WIndows side I had migrated 15-20 email accounts from Forte Agent into Thunderbird, and I used Thunderbird for MacOS and for Windows for a long time (since they both used the same format files).
I did a quick Google search and found this like: http://forums.macrumors.com/archive/index.php/t-420478.html on how to migrate form Windows Mail to Mac Mail.  It may offer you some assistance as well.

  • Mail migration assistant did not upload old messages in inbox during upgrad

The mail migration assistant did not upload the contents of old messages stored in my inbox for mail in panther to tiger. It uploaded drafts and sent mail messages and even the husks of the messages themselves into the new inbox but not their contents, not the information contained in the messages themselves. I see that the old messages are accessible via spotlight but only their external identification remains in the new inbox, not what was in them. Is their anyway to rerun mail migration assistant or the mail setup assistant (whatever it may be called) so that it uploads all of messages from my old inbox under panther to the new inbox under tiger? I believe that while running initaially soon after I launched mail for the first time under tiger, the migration assistant for mail quit early, maybe because I had many messages stored in my inbox.
So my basic question is, is it possible to rerun the program that migrates mail from the old inbox under panther to the new inbox under tiger? If it's not, is it possible to first of all empty out the current inbox with its group of the external skeletal remains of messages but lacking their substance, the information contained in them, and then refill my current inbox with the entirety of the message, i.e., not just its identifying information, its external identification (from whom and about what), but also what the message at one time contained? In each of these messages it only has this bit of information: "The message from 'such and such a sender' with 'such and such a subject' has not downloaded from the server. You need to take this account online in order to download it." But of course I am online. The online bit I supose the message is about is the being online with the migration assistant, and that's the being online I would really like to go back to I suppose, before it seems to me this mail migration assistant quit on me prematurely, without uploading or downloading, whatever the term, the entire content of my inbox with its batch of received messages. In the process, it did, however, capture the entirety of my drafts and sent messages from their particular boxes.
Please help. How can I redo the migration step from panther mail inbox to tiger mail inbox so that my mail is in its inbox and reachable there as opposed to apparently being searchable by only spotlight?
    Thank you.

I am having a similar problem. I just upgraded from 10.2.8 to 10.4.3. It didn't go well (a USB peripheral interfered)and I ended up upgrading while archiving users.
There was no 'restore users opportunity'. I have done a lot manually, which is painful...in fact reminiscent of why I don't like PC's. Anyway, I was able to locate and restore almost all the mailboxes, including a bunch of deleted files from the 'Previous Systems' folders. I still haven't found the secret location of all the email that was in the "Inbox".
I would greatly appreciate it if someone in the know could share where and how to restore my old inbox so I can get my important emails back. Hacking or magic software...what ever it takes.
    Thanks

  • Mail migration trouble (Switching between outlook - mac to windows)

Having troubles for migrating mails from mac outlook 2011 to windows outlook 2010.
I thought of switching to windows becaouse of personal reasons, and email migration is one thing that has stopped me from doing so.
I was transferring my mails from outlook 2011 to outlook 2010, and thought it would take only few minutes for migration via import/export option available in outlook 2011. But the situation seems to be more complicated than I thought. Outlook 2010 would not import tha file made while using the export mail option in outlook 2011. I am stuck with this problem and need to solve it asap. Am I doing anything wrong?? Please suggest some problem solving solutions.
    Thanks

    Hi,
Outlook can't import .olm files directly, as a workaround, we may create an IMAP account in Outlook 2011 and upload your emails to it, then create the same IMAP account in Outlook 2007 to download the emails, then drag the emails to your own account folder.
How to configure Outlook to receive e-mail messages from an IMAP server:

  • Urgent Assistance needed - Problems on entourage mail migration from

I was migrating all my Entourage (office for Mac 04) e-mails from my Powerbook G4 to my new MacBook (with office for Mac 08). I see now that I lost all my e-mails (more than 40.000) and I canf found nothing on the HD of the Powerbook G4. I have also lost my backups before so I m in critical position. Somebody can help and give me hints to recover the HD or my emails? Many Thanks L.

Unless you trashed the files, I would think they are still on your Powerbook. If I remember correctly, those files live in a Microsoft folder within the Users folder. You can do a search thru Spotlight.

  • Mail Migration - Folders Subscriptions & Unread Mail

    Hello,
I'm currently testing a migration from MS 5.2 to 6.2. Sorry for all
the verbage here - I'll try to shorten as much as possible.
iPlanet Messaging Server 5.2 HotFix 2.09 (built Nov 18 2005)

    libimta.so 6.2-3.04 (built 01:43:03, Jul 15 2005)
I have issues with read messages showing up unread and folder subscriptions gone. I'm looking at the folder subscription issue right now.
The portal migration first has us 'migrate' the email data. After that is done, a rename of the email account is done to match the 'immutable id'. So user/joeuser/INBOX is going to become user/83899111100/INBOX. What I have found is that if joeuser had a store.sub file, it is now gone after the rename. If I copy the original store.sub file and edit the contents to match the new acct, joeuser can then see the folders.
Is that normal behavior for the store.sub file to disappear if you are completely renaming an account?
Regarding the unread mail issue. I copy the mboxlist info from the 5.2 system to the 6.2 system, run the upgrade scripts, and start stored. The default log for stored statup that say "Removing database environment" and to run reconstruct -m.

I run the reconstruct -m, which works and results in a new database. I would assume that this is why all the mail shows up as 'unread'. Is this a correct assumption? Where is read/unread info kept?
I've opened up a problem with the portal vendor. For the subscribed issue, that seems related to the rename of the account itself. For the unread issue, that would seem related to the 'newly initialized' database.
Since the 6.2 system doesn't like something about the migrated database and to avoid 'losing' the old database, I am being told to the the following on the current 5.2 system prior to migration to ensure a clean database:
    1. reconstruct -m
    2. And one step 1 is complete, reconstruct -r -f
Does this seem like the right thing to do?
Thanks for reading all of this and whatever info you can provide.

Before going any further - performing the upgrade with a non-patched version of 6.2 is going to cause problems period -- regardless of whether this is 'necessary' due to some kind of portal support requirement.

I've opened up a problem with the portal vendor. For the subscribed issue, that seems related to the rename of the account itself. For the unread issue, that would seem related to the 'newly initialized' database.I suggest you upgrade to 118207-63 prior to performing the migration and see if either/both issues persist.
I would run "reconstruct -r" which will quickly detect and resolve simple errors, but running (1) and (2) seems un-necessary since this is unlikely to be the cause of the behaviour you mentioned.
There are known issues with upgrading from 5.2->6.2 e.g. bug #6460035 - "make_mboxlistdb_changes.sh script does not copy the log files" which will lead to the same error -- once again this is fixed in 118207-63.

  • Mac Mail migrating data freezes computer

I just installing Lion 10.7.5 from Snow Leopard 10.6.8 all fine except when I click on MAIL it freezes the whole computer (ie: can only move the mouse nothing else) and the screen says: "migrating data..." +  a small amount of blue on the progress bar.
Tried resarting etc but freezes at the same point. Disk utlity shows the mac drive is fine- no errors etc and I have done a PRAM reset etc etc.
    Any ideas?

I have the same problem after installing Lion on my MacBook Air. More than 10.000 messages were correctly picked up from the mail files, after starting mail it first says that it is "optimizing my database", soon after it starts "migrating data" and it never stops to do so. Last night it worked for 8 hours "migrating". I could not find a solution for this. Any help is appreciated.

  • Apple mail migration from user account

I just upgraded from a MacBook (18 mos old w/ Leopard) to a MacBook Pro. I ran the migration assistant, and all of my applications are looking and working great, except for Apple mail. It working properly, but none of my old mail has copied over.
I still am connected via firewire. I copied my ~library/mail over to my new ~library/mail and I'm still not seeing any of my old mail.
Can you help a sister out?

First, delete the /Home/Library/Mail/ folder on your new computer. To transfer your data from the new computer follow this guide:
Folders You Can Move to Your new Mac
From the Home folder copy the contents of Documents, Movies, Music, Pictures, and Sites.
    In your /Home/Library/ folder:
/Home/Library/Application Support/AddressBook (copy the whole folder)
/Home/Library/Application Support/iCal (copy the whole folder)
Also in /Home/Library/Application Support (copy whatever else you need including folders for any third-party applications)
    /Home/Library/Keychains (copy the whole folder)
    /Home/Library/Mail (copy the whole folder)
    /Home/Library/Preferences/ (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/iTunes (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/Safari (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/Calendars (copy the whole folder)
    If you want cookies:
    /Home/Library/Cookies/Cookies.plist
    /Home/Library/Application Support/WebFoundation/HTTPCookies.plist
    For Entourage users:
Entourage is in /Home/Documents/Microsoft User Data
    Also in /Home/Library/Preferences/Microsoft
    For FireFox:
    /Home/Library/Applications Support/FireFox
    /Home/Library/Preferences/org.mozilla.firefox.plist

  • Mail Migration with two accounts with one BT ID

Has anyone been migrated to BT Mail that have two separate BT Accounts associated with just the one BT ID ?
Is this allowed under the new regime or if not what changes had to be made.

If you mean two or more BT mail accounts associated with one BT ID, then yes.
Though you can also separate one or more of your BT mail sub accounts to a completely different/new BT ID as well.
It's one of the options when you signed in for the first time once you were migrated to the BT mail system.
What's the problem you are having?
If you mean two different BT Retail (Consumer) accounts, ie with two different account numbers, then I'm not sure you can associate them with one BT ID account. However I could be wrong.

Have recently migrated to BT mail from previous BT Yahoo mail. So I now have a single login now for MyBT and emails. All works fine and have updated Windows livemail with new password details.
Tried to update ipad with new details and followed all the various BT Help screens and trawled through various forum messages cannot get BT mail on the ipad. After inputting all the settings and when system is verifying I get a prompt that user name of password is incorrect.

incoming mail: mail.btinternet.com using SSL authentication and server port 993
Password: Is new password that works when accessing BT Mail on the web
outgoing mail: mail.btinternet.com using SSL authentication and server port 465
Having tried setting up account 20+ times and still get the same message.
Was able to get emails on ipad prior to migration to BT Mail. Is thsi a known issue or am I missing something?

  • TS4003 iCloud mail migration issues...

I did the iCloud migration and everything else seems to work.  However, when I try to activate mail in my iCloud settings on my iPhone or iPad it says I need to enter a new email address to create an account.   This is horrible because my me.com account is one of my primary accounts that I rely heavily on.   What to I do to link this to iCloud.   me.com now just directs me to iCloud and I can't see a way to try the migration over again.   Is there a help/tech support email address or phone number to apple about this?
    Thanks,
    Jonathan

Nevermind, I think I just figured out that even though iCloud prompts you to sign in with your apple ID if you have a me.com account that's different you need to sign in to iCloud with your me.com account instead.   This seems to work.

  • Basic Mail Migration Procedure 10.5 to 10.6

I've got a very basic question about migrating Apple Mail from 10.5 to 10.6. The old mail is from a 10.5 Macbook with a dead logic board. The mail folder was copied to the drive of a new 10.6 Macbook -- but migration assistant was not used. On the new machine, Mail has never been initialized -- just opened once and closed when the system asked for an email address, etc.
My guess is that I should drag the entire Mail folder from the old machine to the ~/Library folder on the new machine. And also copy the old com.apple.mail.plist file to the new ~/Library/Preferences folder.
Then just start mail and let it do the import. Everything should come over, correct? Am I missing anything?
Thanks very much in advance to anybody who can shed any light.
    Steve

I just meant that when I migrated my address book database from my old MBP to my new one, I just made a backup of said address book database (in address book.app), transfered the backup file to my new MBP, and imported its content into the new address book application. This mechanism is simple, straightforward, and above all, reassuring, as I don't feel afraid of loosing some data. I never talked about the repository of addresses captured in mail. I just think that there should be such a functionality in mail.app, to be able to quickly backup and migrate your entire local email database.

  • Mail migration between 10.6.8 and 10.7.2

    Hi,
I have 10.6.8 and 10.7.2 installed on different volumes and can boot into them both. I have set up the Lion Server but have not yet moved the mail server files. When I read the Apple manual "Upgrading and Migrating v10.7.pdf", I get somewhat confused, it refers to the mail database being stored in /var/imap on the 10.6.8 server. The problem is, I have no /var/imap directory? Were could my dovecot databas be if not under /var/imap?
The 10.6.8 mail server seems to be working fine but the imap.conf filen even refers to /var/imap even though it does not exist. Can someone help me get this sorted, what should I do?
Could I use the following command found in the Upgrading and Migrating v10.7.pdf
sudo 65_mail_migrator.pl --purge 0 --sourceRoot "/Volumes/Snow Leopard Server" --sourceVersion 10.6.8 --targetRoot "/" --language en
    Thanks in advance!
    Triplee

Mail should be in /var/imap unless you installed an alternate mail system: you referenced Dovecot? Did you have Dovecot running on SLS?
The /var/imap directory should be existent even if you never enabled SLS's Mail service, with contents like:
    drwxr-xr-x  8 _cyrus  mail  272 Oct 25  2010 db
    drwxr-xr-x  2 _cyrus  mail   68 Oct 25  2010 log

    drwxr-xr-x  2 _cyrus  mail   68 Oct 25  2010 ptclient

    drwxr-xr-x  2 _cyrus  mail   68 Oct 25  2010 sync
This is from a server that never had Mail enabled..
I have no idea whether the the command you referenced would do a migration if there is no /var/imap directory on the source volume.
