E-mail password rejection AGAIN

This wasaproblem a few months ago
http://community.bt.com/t5/Other-BB-Queries/E-mail-password-rejection/td-p/234061/highlight/true/pag...
All happening again today.
I DESPAIR of BTOpenworld

Am also having exactly the same irritating problem as davrh (the original poster).
My configuration is Intel iMac, OS X 10.5.8 & Apple Mail 3.6.
Worked fine for about 3 years, then started rejecting passwords as below:-
The POP server “mail.btinternet.com” rejected the password for user “[email protected]
Please re-enter your password, or cancel.
Problem started about five months ago. I am using 3 BTinternet mail addresses within 2 Apple user accounts on the same iMac - all the BT e-mail addresses have the same problem.
Interestingly, a gmail account operated within the Mail client does not have the problem.
I have increased the time period for the Apple mail client to "check for new mail",  as an attempt reduce the number of pop-ups and relieve the irritation factor.
As passwords are set within in the Mail client account information, this should not be an invalid password issue.
I suspect it may be a timing issue on the BT Mail server side.
I had hoped the issue would be resolved with the new update of BT Yahoo - which is advertised as being 2 x faster.
But it hasn't!
Really need a fix for this.

Until April 2012 there were enough threads on password rejection to knit a large sweater but then the moderator closed the forum saying all was well.  It isn't.  I have been unable to access my bt mail since March except by logging on to webmail after which macmail behaves correctly for about 1 hour.  Wasted £30 on a premium BT help service on this matter. Very nice guy but perplexed!  This issue is not dead. I had the same issue with my iphone which was resolved in an Apple store. Is there now a fix for this utterly irritating situation? It does BT no credit whatsoever. Any chance of reclaiming my lost hours and £30? I think I know the answer to that one.

  • E-mail password rejection on Mac

I am adding my experience to the long list, just so that BT knows the problem is widespread and continuing. Yesterday and today, so far, I suddenly lost my BT Yahoo mail on my Mac with the now common password rejected message. I have no time to fix it so will use webmail meantime, but it just hammers another nail in the BT coffin.

  • Mac mail password rejected and rejected and rejected and rejected and rejec

    os 10.3.9
    Mail 1.3.11
    SBCglobal Internet access
I have spent many a wasted hours chatting with a very polite person in India (SBC tech support) about my mail problem only to be assured - more than once - that all my settings are correct and it’s a mac problem.
    So here it is:
My incoming mail server is: pop.sbcglobal.yahoo.com
I have my account password stored my mail program/keychain and sometimes mail manages to automatically access and download my email - just like you'd think it would. BUT then all of a sudden it doesn’t, and I get the error from mail:
The POP server “pop.sbcglobal.yahoo.com” rejected the password for user “[email protected]
Please re-enter your password, or cancel.
I re-enter - or cancel and wait for the next scheduled auto-check and it happens again and again. Occasionally though it works. If I hit the 'Get Mail' button twice in a row its pretty likely to reject the password at least once.
Any ideas why this should be - or how I could stop it?
    Thanks in advance

This issue may have more to do with your mail server rather than your Mac.
I too was afflicted with issue for over a week. I tried many fixes including, keychain repair, deleting my mail prefs and rebuilding my accounts by hand, toggling the interval button, shutting down and unplugging everything including AC power to my Mac. (btw -cancelling the message seemed to make it come back faster)
It was happening about half dozen times a day. Then one day it happened only 3 times, the next day twice, the next day once. Then gone! Fingers X'd it's 3 full weeks now without seeing it.
    There is hope!
EDIT: As Max Miles says multiple computers can cause this. All are valid suggestions and may work in your cases.

  • Mail Password Rejection

    Hello!
For awhile, I was able to get my Gmail account's messages loaded through Mail without any problem. But lately, Mail rejects the passwords I have stored in my Keychain (both pop and smtp) for receiving or sending mail. When prompted, I'll type in the passwords (which I know to be correct), and the rejection pop-up will continue to appear (in some cases, an indefinite number of times until I hit "cancel," in other cases, just two or three times).
Does anyone know what I should do?
    Thanks in advance!

Hi, have you tried deleting those passwords in Keychain & tried again storing them?
Open Keychain Access in Utilities, use Keychain First Aid under the Window Menu item, then either check the Password under that item, change it, or delete it and start over.
Resetting your keychain in Mac OS X...
If Keychain First Aid finds an issue that it cannot repair, or if you do not know your keychain password, you may need to reset your keychain.

  • Can't send mail- password rejected

I just got a new MacBook and after setting up Mail, I can receive emails but I can't send them. I get an error message that reads "The SMTP server “smtpauth.earthlink.net” rejected the password. Please re-enter your password, or cancel." But then when I re-enter the password, it still rejects it. I've read every troubleshooting thing I can find, but nothing will solve this problem. I've checked the outgoing mail server, my user name and password and everything is correct. And I still can't send mail. HELP!

    Hi
You need to check with your ISP whether or not the send mail server (SMTP) requires a password.  Some do, but many do not.  When you know the correct password to send mail, then you need to tell Mail as follows:
Mail menu > Preferences > Accounts > Select the account
Click on the Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) combo box, and select Edit SMTP Server List...
In the Account Information tab put the server name
In the Advanced Tab, set up the authentication information from your ISP.
    Good luck
    Bob

  • POP Password Rejection - again

Whilst retrieving email from my POP3 account in 'Mail', the password is being 'rejected' almost continually. I have retyped the password in the preferences tab, and sometimes it is accepted, but more often not.
    Any ideas?

"Sometimes" makes me think that the issue could be on server side. I suggest to prove first, that the password you use is really correct.
Open a terminal window and type in "telnet xxx pop3" and press enter (replace "xxx" with the full qualified domain name of your pop3 server). You should get a greeting from your POP3-server.
Next type in "user yourusername" and press enter (replace "yourusername" with your POP3-username). And don't worry, if you do not see what you type.
Next type in "pass yourpassword" and press enter (replace "yourpassword" with your POP3-password).
Take a look at the first character of the response: a "+" accepted the password, a "-" not.

  • Yahoo e-mail password rejected

I've had my yahoo e-mail account set up and working with my BIS account for years.  Today I received an e-mail "action required: update password".  I haven't changed my Yahoo password.  Then when I try to update the password on the BIS account, it won't accept it- says it's invalid.  I can still sign in to my Yahoo account on the web, so I know the password is still good!  Can anyone help me?

I have the same problem, or at least got the same message. I have been using the service successfully since december last with an old bberry 7290 and btinternet mail (provided by yahoo). I can access my email account fine from a web browser (but see below). I got the message at 20.32 pm yesterday (which interestingly may be about the same time as the previous correspondent if he / she in on EST which is 5 hours behind the UK). When I access the email set up command via the url on the yahoo site (blackberry.com/yahoo/mail) it first off names my account but then says it is invalid. If I try to delete, edit or validate it, or even add it again it says "ERROR the site cannot be accessed in this manner. Please use the URL or link provided by your service provider" - which I thought I was). A hint may be that I renewed my broadband service with BT just before I got this message. While trying to fix it today and re logging in to my email account it thanked me for renewing my service so I am wondering if somehow it cancelled and renewed something and screwed it up)
    any help gratefully received.

  • Mail password rejected

Mail Version 3.6 repeatedly asks for password - message
The MobileMe IMAP server “mail.mac.com” rejected the password for user “mtfunsmith”
Please re-enter your password, or cancel.
Now  Inbox messages are not visible.  Mobile me on iCloud is working but not through Mail on iMac.

    Hello,
I think they're slowly nudging people to switch, .mac & MobileMe are going away about June/July, may as well set it up now.
Do not delete the old account yet.
I understand .mac mail will still come through. Do not delete the old account yet.
You cannot use .mac or MobileMe as type of Account, you have to choose IMAP when setting up, otherwise Mail is hard coded to change imap.mail.me.com to mail.me.com & smtp.mail.me.com to smtp.me.com, no matter what you try to enter.
iCloud Mail setup, do not choose .mac or MobileMe as type, but choose IMAP...
    IMAP (Incoming Mail Server) information:
    • Server name: imap.mail.me.com

    • Username: [email protected] (use your @me.com address from your iCloud account)
    • Password: Your iCloud password
    SMTP (outgoing mail server) information:

  • Mac Mail password rejected by POP server with ATT ISP

Just 2 months ago my ATT mail server keeps rejecting my email password that I use on apple mail as well as gmail. Now I can't use my apple mail application but the same email address with same password will work for web mail by gmail. I spent $ and hours with ATT connectech service without resolution except aggravation from different call centers repeating same old stories.
Problem: every time I use apple mail, it pops a message to re-enter password because my email address/Password is rejected by POP server. Same address/PW work for my gmail account.
I thought I post here before I have to pay Apple for trouble-shooting now that I am done with futile ATT support. I may never get a fix. I even try to migrate to Comcast but it has problem connecting to my house. I am at my wit's end. Thanks for reading.

  • Can't receive or send mail: Password rejected

    Hi there.
Every time I try and open Mail, I get asked to enter my password for account ".mac account" and told the .mac server "mail.mac.com" has rejected the password for user xxx. I'm asked to re-enter the password. This has happened before when the server is having problems but usually rights itself within a few hours (Re-entering the password never makes any difference.) This time however it's been 5 days, and although I can access my mail at mobileme it's a real pain.
Does anyone have any suggestions about what I can do to get my mail back?
    Many thanks

Not certain, but this can fix myriad Mail problems...
Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), it will try to repair your Disk Directory while the spinning radian is happening, so let it go, run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, then move these folder & file to the Desktop.
Move this Folder to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Caches/Mail/
Move this file to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/Envelope Index
    Reboot.

  • E Mail password yet again

    Hi
Having read the multiple posts regarding ongoing requests to enter password in Outlook 2007 I am starting a new post as instructed by the Moderators.
So the issue with the pop up requesting password has been going on for months.
A few bits of information that may help,
    no smart phone or tablet,
can access webmail so not incorrect password although sometimes I have to enter a captcha phrase as the account gets locked for some reason (perhaps Outlook repeatedly trying to log on?)
    tried using Thunderbird, same problem
Now here is the really interesting bit, which I seem to remember reading somewhere but cannot find the post, If I am actually logged into my BT Yahoo webmail then send and receive works fine.
This issue is ridiculous  and as for BT saying the e mail is free this is nonsense, we pay for a package!

    Hi, Jenny -
Okay. The problem is with Outlook Express, and is often caused by bloated archive database files.
Try this - with Outlook Express not running, hold down the Option key when clicking on the Mail icon in IE, or when starting Outlook Express directly (by double-clicking its program icon). This will bring up a message asking if you want to compact the database files - click OK. This will create new database files containing the old data; the old database files can then be thrown away.
Something to note - when an email is downloaded in OE, it is added to the database files; when the message is deleted the database files do not shrink. This is especially bothersome when there are attachments to the email messages. If you've extracted an attachement to your desktop or elsewhere, you can then remove it from the email it came with. When you compress the database files, space won;t then be taken up by redundant copies of attachments.
Also, if you have not yet done so, increase the Preferred memory allocation for Outlook Express, and for Internet Explorer, too. Adding 20 or 30 thousand to the original Preferred amount is not excessive.

  • FYI: iCloud mail password rejected on Snow Leopard and earlier Macs

If you have set Mail up manually on Snow Leopard or earlier to access iCloud Mail, and if you have also enabled 2-step verification on your Apple ID, you will find your usual Apple ID password doesn't work. Apple are now requiring app-specific password for third-party applications to access iCloud if you have set up two-step verification (if you haven't set this up you won't be affected). Since Mail on Snow Leopard and earlier was not intended to access iCloud you will have to generate a password for it. Go to http://appleid.apple.com; click 'Manage your Apple ID' and sign in (you will be prompted for an access code sent to your trusted device). Select 'Password and Security'; click 'Generate an App-Specific Password' and follow the instructions. Once you have the password, copy it and paste it into the password field in the Account settings. You should also keep a note of it (though you can generate a new one if required).

Thank you Roger. Good, sound advice!
    Andrew

  • Email password rejection

With extraordinary arrogance BT have closed a thread again before a problem has been solved. A considerable number of customers have been suffering for some years with perfectly valid passwords being rejected by BT Yahoo email servers. Some of us have been fobbed off with fatuous replies from all levels of support along the lines of -  it is your fault, your email client is at fault, you are accessing your mail through multiple devices and so on.
The following thread (started July 2011)  has been closed by a "Moderator" and I quote from his post
"Since this migration work was done we have completed extensive testing and no further issues with POP or IMAP have been found."
    http://community.bt.com/t5/Other-BB-Queries/E-mail-password-rejection/m-p/234061/highlight/true#M638...
Thread closed - problem solved. But it isnt, the same old thing is happening again this morning. BT is right and the customer is always wrong.

I guess we just have to keep starting a new thread! I emailed the mods after yesterday's closure saying I am still having problems, this is the third time of emailing them, they did answer my first one asking for more info but nothing since then. The pop ups are dreadful and if I don't close outlook I have to keep watching the screen if I am typing as my typing ends up in the password box of the pop up!!! The main irritation is that it affects my smartphone so when I am out on the move I cannot keep up with emails as they don't come through, the irritating password incorrect message comes up!!!. When they do (after logging onto btyahoo) we get all of them again. No probs with iPad. I want to ring BT but seems everyone has tried this so many times without success. It's such a shame, I don't want to leave BT, I have been with them since I ever had the Internet but this does make you start looking at other companies.
