E17 on a fresh Arch Linux + gtk apps... auto mounting and other issues

hi all...
I have gone through the forums and found a similar but-not-quite-the-same thread about this, which is why I am posting a new thread - so, please excuse any redundancy/laziness.
As the topic says, I am making a new Arch Install, on my laptop that has/had arch+kdemod on it for quite some time now. I have now tarred that old install and put it on my desktop that has more RAM than this lappy. So I went with a minimalist approach - after googling for long, I managed to put together something that takes up about 350 MB RAM, when running the desktop, firefox, mplayer, openoffice, two or three terminals, and conky - which is all pretty good. But I am having some teething troubles in many issues, so any help in the following is most appreciated.
My set-up and the problems....
WM - e17, from the repos (I tried, but could not get the easy_e17 script to work properly)
FM - emelfm2
        - I am not able to get my USBs, CDs, DVDs etc to mount automagically. I have HAL from the repos. This is my fstab.
/dev/cdrom             /media/cd   auto    ro,user,noauto,unhide   0      0
/dev/dvd               /media/dvd  auto    ro,user,noauto,unhide   0      0
#/dev/fd0               /media/fl   auto    user,noauto             0      0
This setup gave me no trouble at all when using Arch-Kdemod. Now I have to be root to mount from the command line, and can not auto mount cd/dvd/USBs.
E17 file manager enabled is also no help.
browser - firefox, dillo
terminal - mrxvt
editor - leafpad
audio - mpd + sonata
video - gmplayer
sys monitor - conky
cd/dvd burner - recorder, from the repos
Openoffice, PSPP for statistics
Pidgin
Wengophone2
at the moment I am behind a proxy and haven't yet tried it, but can anyone confirm it is still working...?
epdfview
chmsee
rtorrent
feh, exhibit
dreamchess
That is the whole setup, in case it helps someone.
Thanks for reading, and waiting for suggestions about the auto mount issue.

hi all...
Thanks for the replies.
@fingel... That udev rules addition on the wiki gave me the jitters initially as it looked like I was hacking away at my systems innards, BUT, after trying everything else, including things mentioned here, nothing worked. So I finally did the udev thing, and now the USB is mounting fine.
However I still cannot get DVDs or CDs to mount. I am added to the optical group, and yet I have to click the mount icon in emelfm2 to be able to mount the CD or DVD - the only consolation is that I am able to mount it as normal user.
Any help there....? I haven't modified anything from the usual install, except for this udev thingy.
And, How can I make the mrxvt terminal show me more lines on scrolling up. Now it is allowing me to scroll up only by 10 lines or so, and I am having to pipe through less to be able to view anything meaningful in commands like yaourt -Ss

  • Scan app not opening and other issues

    Hi,
Let me start by saying thank you for your assistance. I have a regular-old 5514 photosmart airprint printer, and it is going crazy. It is just about to be two years old. My computer is a MacBook Pro on 10.9.1 (also two years old). The printer and computer are connected by my Comcast blast wifi. All of my paper and ink are HP. So here's the problem, first it won't print my pictures, not on glossy or regular-it just makes the noise like it is printing but the pages are blank (this never used to be a issue); second, the scan app won't even open on my computer, it just gives me a long page of coded errors or just automatically closes; finally, it often is printing streaky if it does print. There are no updates that I can find on for the app on my computer, and I have zone 2 ink, (I will buy more if this thing starts working), and I have run all the tests and they are completely fine as if nothing is wrong. Please help! If you need additional details I can provide that info.
    Thanks,
    amycdero

Hi amycdero and welcome to the HP Forum,
I understand that you are having scanning and printing issues after upgrading to Mavericks OS X v10.9.1. I will try my best to help you resolve this issue.
In this document for Mac OS X: Scanning Software Does Not Open or Stops Responding are steps the may help you with your scanning issue.
This document for Fixing Ink Streaks, Faded Prints, and Other Common Print Quality Problems should help with the streaking printing issue.
I hope this information is helpful. Please let me know.
    Thank you,

  • Arch Linux as a server: advantages and disadvantages?

    Hello,
I am about to create a hosting server for a great number of websites. Since i never actually did it myself it will be relatively new to me. For that reason I want to use Arch distro because I like it, understand it and have most experience with it.
I wanted to hear opinions why Arch is suitable and why not for a server machine. Also, maybe someone could recommend other distros that are better fit for the job (provided there are any)
    Thanks!

Short: CentOS is a pretty popular choice but I have no experience with it. You will need to make sure you have the latest security updates while also making sure that your keeping a good availability(up time), which could be a problem with Arch Linux.
Long: Security updates and system up time/availability. Making sure you have the latest security updates may effect your server's availability. This can be a problem if you have paying clients as the updates may break stuff. Arch Linux doesn't have an official security team but there are some community efforts underway. Take a look at the wiki under security, firewalls and sysctl.conf hardening. Also keep your eye are ArchServer. I use Arch Linux on my VPS but its only been for hobby stuff so far. As I've been getting closer to relying on my website professionally I've been considering changing to a different dist. of Linux; the problem is I'm most familiar with Arch Linux, don't want to go back to Slackware and I'm not happy with the way Ubuntu does certain things[init system, sudo/root setup](I maintain an Ubuntu LAMP setup for our Intranet).

  • Mail, App Store, Quicktime and others don't work!

I downloaded OS X Mavericks but mail crashes every time i open it with my IMac.
Also App Store, Quicktime and other software don't work.
I'm really in difficult! Help me please!

Mmmmm I tried this an it didn't seem to solve my problem, but I think it helped me understand what's going on slightly more than before. I restored my system and files after my HD became corrupted by duping the drive. When I restored everything, it seems there might have been some conflicting problems with the OS and two identical users were created. So now in order to access my personalized settings and what not, I need to unlock my user settings and leave it unlocked for a few hours. This wouldn't be a problem if my MBP didn't give me kernal panics every time I run Safari or some general application for more than 10 minutes. I'm going to declare AppleCare as it's been under 3 years, but want to wait before my replacement iMac comes. Thank you for your help.

Thanks. I can change the forwarding settings in Gmail to be either POP or IMAP. That is quite simple. I just looked at those settings on the Gmail server and, to my surprise, both are enabled. In order for outlook client on my computer to receive IMAP emails I have to change the email account settings in my current outlook from POP to IMAP. I don't need to be using the Exchange version of Outlook to receive IMAP. I guess I'll do a little research tomorrow on Exchange so i can figure out what, if anything, it might do for me.
I glanced at the link you sent me and it looks like it might be very helpful - another project for tomorrow.
BTW: I hit "This Solved my Question" by accident. I meant only to "like' your response so you would get some benefit from the help you've given me so far. I hope I haven't discouraged others from taking a shot at helping me. I suspect there is more than one way to approach this and, as you know, my problem isn't really solved until I have what I need all set up and running smoothly.

Lion dropped application support for PowerPC. An OS may drop or change what to use to open a file, not the file.

  • Trouble with a wired connection on my fresh Arch Linux Install

I am a new Arch Linux user. I used to use Ubuntu exclusively, but I'm to the point where I can no longer stand a lot of the issues with the new development and Canonical. Anyways....
I have a Dell Inspiron 1440 laptop with an RTL8110SC (Module R8169) Ethernet port. (Pardon me if my terminology is wrong; please correct me if it is so I can learn? ) During the install process with the CD that I made, I had no issues connecting to the Internet. However, whenever I boot into my install, there is no connection. I've tried pinging various web pages and nothing will happen. I know that my hardware is compatible, but I do not know what to do next. I've tried everything under the Wiki's Beginner's Guide and the Network Configuration Guide.
I just realised after I wrote this top portion that it no longer is connecting via CD, either. Pinging is giving me errors about no packets being received.
Please help me with this matter? I would love to start using Arch Linux!

Ping is a very basic command that is fundamental to debugging networks at the lowest levels.

What we can tell so far..
    You have an Ethernet Interface.
    You have an Ethernet Address.
You cannot look up domain names (bad)
We are trying to see if you can see other computers if you know their address.  This will tell us if it is a DNS or a routing problem

  • No wlan0 interface, fresh arch linux install.

    Hi there,
I'v installed finally arch linux on my box, and everything is fine, i configured well my system (after reeding the arch wiki installation guide) and now i'm with a # (no gui off course).
I was trying to set up the wireless interface but when I type ifconfig the wlan0 doesn't show up, only  eth0 and lo
    lspci | grep -i net

    ifconfig wlan0 up
SIOSCSIFFLAGS: No such file or directory
    (this is obvious)
The strange "thing" is that when i type ifconfig  (on the live cd), I see the wlan0 interface and this doesn't show up on the hdd install.
    What should I do?
PS: i have only wireless connection, now posting from an macBook

Did you install the firmware package?  It loads automatically during install but only goes to the hard drive during install if you select it in the list of packages.  The package is called 'iwlwifi-3945-ucode'.
Also, if you do a pacman -Syu, you'll update to the 2.6.32.2 kernel which has a bug.  With some access points, it will disassociate when the 3945 power management puts the card to sleep.  To work around this, as root type 'iwconfig wlan0 power off'.  this should be the default behavior in the next kernel update.  If you stay with 2.6.30 the 3945 should work fine.

  • Only GTK apps can print, any other app (including lp) appears "held"

The jobs are "held", have 0k size, and when I release them, they disappear. I'm using cups-usblp (as otherwise my Epson printer isn't detected) and gutenprint drivers.
The relevant log lines (log level warn, and I just looked for anything suspicious) should be:
    E [27/Mar/2012:19:03:58 +0200] cupsdReadClient: 16 IPP Read Error!
This is when I submit the job with a non-gtk app.
[27/Mar/2012:19:04:38 +0200] [Job 64] Aborting job because it has no files.
This appears when I "release" the job in the HTTP interface.
With GTK apps (such as evince or firefox), everything works flawlessly.
    Does anybody have any ideas?

Im currently having the same problem with my Epson. I only noticed it yesterday and have not found a workaround myself.

  • Arch Linux has helped me learn and I am grateful.

I am going to tell you what sparked this thread first:  I was reading your wiki on installing a 32bit bundled system into a 64bit system. And NO, I did not know what the heck was going on as usual. The thing is I am always curious. That is why I end up learning. Here is what sparked me...  I got to the 'sed' command and did NOT understand what was going on and I dove in! What a wonderful and amazingly, useful tool. Instead of just copying commands such as:
    # sed -e 's/\$arch/i686/g' /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist > /opt/arch32/mirrorlist
    # sed -e 's@/etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist@/opt/arch32/mirrorlist@g' -e '/Architecture/ s,auto,i686,' /etc/pacman.conf > /opt/arch32/pacman.conf
I took the command apart,  tried it in various ways, made test files and learned what it all meant. This type of thing is happening over and over again while using Arch. Arch was extremely overwhelming at first but, I really like it that way, I tend to learn really fast this way. In the beginning it is REALLY hard though.
i have read about said and I know about substitute and global (s///g) but what through me off was -e '/Architecture/ s,auto,i686,' So I made a test file with Architecture in it.
echo "Architecture = auto" > test
    then ran
    cat test | sed -e '/Architecture/ s,auto,i686,'
Wow! Guys, I was so excited when I finally figured out what was going on. Through trial and error, I just learned some really cool things about said and also got better at seeing that you can use any character as the separator - like @ instead of /. See this makes me happy, when I figure something out like this. It is SO rewarding. Im like a kid at Christmas
So what is happening is I am getting this phenominal understanding of Linux by diving deep into Arch Linux. I have now swithced over my only computer to Arch Linux. I only really cared about a few windows programs and with wine I have one of them running!!
I just want to thank you all for such a great experience. I didn't know how much I love this stuff until I started with Arch Linux. Thanks again!

    firekage wrote:
I wanted to learn too...so i have question.
Could somebody explain  this? Also, what this is exacly
    '/Architecture/ s,auto,i686,'
Let me show you by example...
echo "hello world" | sed 's/world/universe/'
echo "hello world" | sed 's,world, universe,'
echo "hello world" | sed 's@world@universe@'
Notice all of these are the same result. This is because you can use any character you like in place of the separator.
So when you look at this '/Architecture/ ***s.auto,i686,*** that is replacing the word 'auto' with 'i686'
The /Architecture/ is like using grep.
so if you have a file that looks like this
    color1 = red
    color2 = red
Easy way to make this in one command. Make sure and use $ and ' ' instead of " "
    echo $'color1 = red\ncolor2 = red' > test
    and run this
    cat test | sed -e '/color1/ s,red,blue,'
    same thing...
    cat test | sed -e '/color1/ s@red@blue@'
also to prove its like grep
    cat test | grep color2 | sed -e 's/red/black/'
sed is very powerful and awesome. There is WAY more than this.

  • Installed arch linux on windows 8 laptop and with GNOME

    Hi all,
I am trying to learn more about linux and decided to go the Arch Linux way. I've battled through a bunch of issues before I got to this point so I might have fudged something along the way.
The current issue is that I install GNOME, and it boots up into GNOME, and I select my username and type my password, and then I see black screen with blinking cursor for 10 seconds after which I am returned to GNOME login screen. It doesn't do a system reboot before going back to the login screen.
The only way to stop this is to put in my livecd arch-linux usb drive and then delete GNOME, after which arch linux will boot back into terminal. (I wish I knew how to do this without using the usb drive)
What should I look at for hints? I don't see any output when this loop happens.
    Thanks!

Ok that works and I can log in. However I don't see any familiar drives mounted. Anyway, I have the output from journalctl. Here it is

I only posted a piece of it.
By the way, I got this file by using startX (becuase otherwise i didnt have permissions), used > to output it to a file, mounted a usb flash drive, copied it to flash drive, used a windows computer to copy the file to my ubuntu laptop (because the folder wouldn't show up in the ubuntu computer) and then posted it here. There has to be a better way to post a debug manage on here.

  • App auto-updates and magazine/newspaper updates won't happen anymore

My iPad Air is running latest iOS, with 33G free memory. I have app auto updates turned on since iPad Air came out and landed into my hands. It worked great since then. But, Oct 13 is last that happened. Since then 29 updates are pending, yet not downloading. Trying to update manually, the circle doesn't even spin. Also, cannot download any new issues in Newsstand, thus behind by one or two issues on each. Probably related. I looked on the web for solutions, tried them all, to no benefit:
    - Cold rebooted the iPad.
    - Logged out of and into my Apple ID.
    - Reset iPad network settings.
    - Killed AppStore app, restarted it.
    - Changed the language to something else, then back to English.
    - Restarted all AppleExtreme routers at home; I have 4, one main, 3 in wired bridge mode, all running latest firmware.
    - I disconnected/"forgot" my home network connection on iPad, then reconnected.
    - I even went to another WiFi network at a Dr's office I had never been to, thus using a totally fresh network connection.
    - I reentered all my credit card info into my AppleID.
None of these worked, some after trying multiple times. Still can't get my new issues of Time/People/Entertainment Weekly, and can't get my 29 app updates... And no alerts or any other indication of any problem. Access to Internet works, obviously. Seems like a problem with something in my account... "Emailed" Apple Support using a form I found on this Support site, it said 24hrs turnaround time, but I didn't get anything back, yet.
    What to do??

same here for 4 months now, and noone seems to be able to address the issue here.

The Net install gets further and asks for a password and user name ( trying the default root password isn't working, after multiple attempts returns me to login prompt).
I have various issues with other distributions as well here are some of the others I have tried so far:

    Arch linux: see above
Chakra: does not recognize anything no boot screen or anything just hangs at blinking cursor or boots into windows
PeppermintOS: hangs at SYS LINUX screen as well.
Please help me Arch linux wan kanobi you are my only hope!
Im lost... and am new to Arch linux though I have done allot of research on it and cant find an answer. I have been using linux for a while in the past, and have installed multiple distributions before without issue. The udev error is from a cd boot....

I'm having this same problem, but the machine locks up for no less than 10 hours (I let it set all night). At the startup screen, it still shows "Starting udevd..." and remains there. I tried looking at the logs, but nothing gives any sort of indication of what is causing it to hang up forever. I don't have a Realtek (dmesg shows Intel(R) PRO/1000 Network Driver - 1.5.1-k). As I'm still struggling with Linux at such a low level, it would probably be best to wait for the fix.
BTW, Thank you to the developers, tech support, helpers, etc. etc. for Arch Linux and all their hard work/support, without which I would be totally lost and wandering aimlessly through a barren desert with a canteen full of sand and no direction in which to go and have no real meaning or purpose in life (a.k.a. using Windows).
