E2000: looking for qos or throttling

Hello-
On our home network, we have a Roku streaming video device as well as two laptop computers.  Our router is an e2000.  I enjoy playing interactive games on my laptop, and everything is fine, except when my wife is watching videos on the Roku.  Then I get hiccups on the laptop which can last anywhere from a few seconds to a minute or more.  (I lose my connection to the game server.)
I think what I need is some way to throttle the bandwidth going to the Roku device.  This should leave enough bandwidth for the game on the laptop.
Does the e2000 support this kind of throttling or qos?  I looked at the qos config on the device, and it doesn't look to me that it will do what I want.  If so, which router do I need?
Thanks.  Scott

Please keep in mind that I hardly know anything about network administration.  I hadn't even heard of QOS until a few days ago.
I'm looking for a way to restrict the bandwidth going to a particular device on my network, because it "doesn't play nice."  It seems to eat up whatever bandwidth it can and sometimes doesn't leave any for other devices.  The device I'm talking about is a Roku streaming video player.
I've figured out how to get to the advanced settings using Cicso connect.  I see seven main categories in the advanced settings:  setup, wireless, security, access restrictions, applications & gaming, admin and status.
I don't see these four options you're talking about.  Can you be more specific?
I read in another forum that I need to go to applications & gaming | qos, which I've done.  There I see the subcategories wireless, internet access priority, category and summary.
What I'm looking for is some what to throttle or restrict the bandwidth going to the Roku streaming video device on my network.  Giving the data going to the Roku a lower priority would also help, but I don't know how to do it, or if it is even possible on my e2000.
Thanks for your help.   Scott

  • I have 300 stores and I'm looking for a global QOS config that would shape/policy the bandwith based on a % of the detected ISP link speed

    Hi,
We have 300 stores with mostly the same router config.
The router in each store is a cisco 891 router capable of doing QOS.
Each of our store is connected to internet through a local Internet Service Provider (ISP).  They all have different ISP.
Each store has different Internet plan with different speed, some are DSL, other are using cable modem.
The connection between the router and the modem is 100Mbps. But the real speed after the modem will be different depending of the Internet plan the store is using. Exemple : 20Mbps download / 2Mbps upload.
I'm looking for a standard QOS config that would be put in each routeur and that would shape/policy the bandwith based on a % of the detected ISP link speed.  The goal here is to prevent a single desktop computer of the store to take all available bandwith of the ISP link because of youtube , cloud photo upload, etc.
Because the wan of the router is in the modem at 100Mbps, I cannot use this bandwith indication for the % calculation. The ISP link speed (after the modem)  is much lower than that.
In other words, I dont want to set specific qos value or bandwith manual value in each of my 300 router. Especially because the ISP speed is not the same in each site, it's a big job and it's changing all the time.  Stores owner boost their link, etc.
So, Is there a way within the router to detect the Wan real max speed and to assign dynamically % of the deduced value and assign it to different policy-map rules, etc.
    regards
    Jonathan D

I'm unaware of any (one) "built-in" feature that will do what you're desire.  (BTW, I don't believe PfR, as mentioned by Matt, will do what you desire either, but I've haven't used it in several years.)
I was looking to address a somewhat similar problem several months ago, and believe I could construct dynamic QoS shaping using an embedded device script working with IP SLA monitoring.  However, the "problem" site (using a cable modem) closed, so I didn't pursue it further.
An alternative approach would be to use as few policy models as possible.  For example if there are sites with 2, 3 or even 5 Mbps uploads, you might use a 2 Mbps shaper for each.  Of course, sites with more available bandwidth won't obtain the full advantage of it, but your maintenance support will be easier.  Conversely, especially for cable modems, running under their nominal speed might provide much more predictable performance, as HFCs are generally much more variable in their actual available bandwidth, moment to moment.

If you're going to use only two queues, and if you want to guarantee the one queue 35% of your egress bandwidth, you need to assign your two queues the ratio of 65:35; you'll need to adjust the four queue percentages to provide those two queues the same ratio.  Ideally you'll want something like share 0 65 35 0, but if you cannot assign zero, something like 40 13 7 40, 20 39 21 20, 10 52 28 10 should do.

  • Looking for a specific feature in an FTP Client

    Hello!
I am looking for a "simple" feature in any FTP client for OS X.
I have tried Fetch, Transmit, CyberDuck and Interarchy 7.x and none had the ability to throttle uploads/downloads. I work with a limited bandwidth and sometimes have to download files (or upload) in the background but at a very slow speed (because the peer has a poor connection).
None of these nice (and they are nice!) ftp programs can do this. I have to either use wget via the command line (wget --limit-rate=xx) or use Total Commander for Windows inside a Parallels Virtual Machine.
Does anybody know about a Mac FTP client that can throttle and enqueue items easily?
    Thanks in advance!

Look at "lftp". It as about a zillion parameters that can be set. One of them is "net:limit-total-rate"
    Quoted from the Docs....
limit transfer rate of all connections in sum. 0 means unlimited. You can specify two numbers separated by colon to limit download and upload rate separately. Note that sockets have receive buffers on them, this can lead to network link load higher than this rate limit just after transfer beginning. You can try to set net:socket-buffer to relatively small value to avoid this.
Find lftp here lftp.yar.ru It is also in thr Fink archive. http://fink.sourceforge.net/

    Hello,
Using the Mac  10.9.2 operating system, I have started to get the following error message when I try to print: "looking for printer" - on my computer screen.  Nothing prints.
In order to fix the problem, I must unplug and replug in my router (Cisco Linksys E2000) and turn the printer off and on.
This problem comes up at least once a day, recently.
Any ideas re how to avoid the problem altogether?
    With thanks.

    Hi AnnPiece,
Welcome to the HP Forums, I hope you enjoy your experience!
I understand the printer keeps losing the network connection.
I will be happy to help you.
When the printer is installed on a network, (wired or wireless) the router assigns it an IP address.
However this IP address can change for various reasons.
I would setup a static IP address.
Printer Does Not Maintain Wireless Connection. Disregard the title.
Go to Solution five: Assign the printer a static IP address.
    Hope this helps.

  • "Look for Apple TV" preference doesn't appear to work

Have just set up Apple TV for a friend, without realising the HD is only 40gb. As a result his music and photos have instantly filled the HD and it seems to be constantly trying to sync (or at least the spinning arrows beside the Apple TV in the devices list won't go away)
To solve the problem until I next get over there, I suggested he merely uncheck "look for Apple TVs" in his iTunes preferences, but the TV still comes up under the list of devices every time he opens iTunes. I have also got him to uncheck the option for synching music and photos in the tabs of his Apple TV device
    Any assistance most appreciated
    Kind Regards
    Bernard
    Powerbook G4 1.67mhz 15"   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Chances are it's your internet connection.
If you can play things under the Computers tab from your local itunes library without issues then your LAN is likely to be fine.
AppleTV2  does not play well with slow/variable interent connections for rentals.
Basically it calculates how much needs to download to flash memory to allow continuous playback without interruption at the rate your internet connection is delivering - if this rate drops due to more users in your area or perhaps throttling of bandwidth by your ISP then the calculation will be wrong and movies will stop/start.
If you simply have a slow connection, then you have to wait for much of the movie to download first, this may take some hours.  On AppleTv1 the presence of an internal drive made this much more robust as the movie would stay on the unit until the rental/view period had expired.  It might take hours to download (so rent in advance of viewing) but once it was there it would stay until expiration.  AppleTV2 however does not retain the download and often if you restart the film it has to start downloading from scratch which I think is crazy.
    Please send feedback here:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/appletv.html
I wish they had the option to 'lock the download in memory' until viewed or deleted - this would limit you to 1 HD movie rental at a time in order to keep enough free for other tasks/local streaming usage, but would make the device far more practical for slow connections.
You should test your internet connection at say speedtest.net on the computer.
    Just as estimates I'd say:
1Mbps - probably 12 hours+ to start watching HD, less for SD
3-4Mbps - 20-30 mins to start watching HD, within a minute for SD  (my speed)
    8Mbps+ - watch within a few seconds
If you go to Settings and in iTunes store options change to SD from HD you may find you can watch far quicker with any new rentals, but if you want HD it defeats the purpose.

  • Where do I look for all my photos?

When I enter TM, if I click on Pictures under Places the window that opens shows iPhoto Library under an icon with a sunset picture that resembles the iPhoto symbol in the dock. When I click on that, a window opens that gives information about the latest modification date. Where do I look for the actual photos?

    C34captain wrote:
I have had a similar problem for some time. All my pictures show up under now, but if I scroll back using the time bars on the side, all the pages are blank with a text that says "loading photos", but nothing ever shows up no matter how long I wait. I access time machine both ways and I get the same result.
That doesn't sound good. Where are your backups (external disk, Time capsule, etc.)? How big is the +iPhoto Library+ on your internal HD?
You might try doing a +*Repair Disk+* (not permissions) on your TM drive/partition via Disk Utility (in your Applications/Utilities folder).
If that doesn't help, take a look at your logs for the time you were trying to see the photos. Use the Console app (same place) to see if there are any messages indicating a problem.
When it starts, click +Show Log List+ in the toolbar, then navigate in the sidebar that opens up to your system.log and select it. Navigate to the time that you noted above, then see what follows that might indicate some sort of *error, failure, throttling respawn, termination, exit,* etc. (many of the messages there are info for developers, etc.). If in doubt, copy and post (a reasonable amount of) the log here.

  • Asking for QoS Advice...

We're upgrading our network infrastructure. We're currently on a Catalyst 6509 core with 3560's as distribution and access. We're currently running CUCM 10.5. Our phones are primarily 7940's running SCCP.
We're moving to a Catalyst 6807 with 6800ia FEXes. We'll be replacing the majority of our deskset phones with the Jabber client and Jabra headsets.
Our current QoS is configured using the 'mls qos' commands and policy-maps in our switches. Someone told me in passing that QoS for Cisco Unified Communications is simplified through "medianet". So the advice I'm looking for...is "medianet" the way we want to go? Or is the 'mls qos' and policy-maps still the way to go? Or is there another preferred option?
Also would be interested in any documentation on best-practices for QoS with CUCM, Unity, WebEx, UCCX, etc.
    Thanks,
    -Mike

    Hi
+5 for yosh , just keep in your mind the following medianet technology is used especially for Real time applications as video endpoints when you have a switch which connected to many applications as " voice , data , video ,wireless" different types of traffic . In this we d classification for the traffic , here below a good example for mdianet configuration
    http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/solutions/Enterprise/Video/qoscampuscat3xxxaag.html
Cisco medianet is specially for video conference endpoints and can be used for IP phone , jabber , telepresence used for the below:-
Autoconfiguration: Facilitates the deployment of video endpoints and reduces the ongoing operational costs of managing moves, adds, and changes. After you connect to the switch by "camera , DMP , IP Pone , jabber" it will get automatically VLAN , QOS , location information and security .
Media Monitoring: Enhances visibility into the network. It helps accelerate troubleshooting, and assess and measure the impact of video, voice, and data applications in the network.
•Media Awareness: Helps the network to become application and rich-media context aware end to end. The network works together with the video endpoints and applications for optimal QoE for end-users and improved visibility for IT.
I used medianet configuration on my cisco switches for my cisco DMPs " digital media players" and this medianet allow me to get the above benfits. Just you have to check the version of your IOS if it is support medianet configuration or not. for configuration , please find the below

  • Looking for good firewall/router solution

    Hi.
Im setting up a network and im wondering wich type of device i should use. The question is if i should use a firewall and a layer 3 switch for inter VLAN routing or if i should use a router solution with built-in firewall (like zone-based) and just layer 2 switches.
    Demands on the equipment:
    NAT
Some QoS (dont really know on what level of complexity its going to demand, proberbly very low, just some form of QoS)
    Firewall solution
Cost balancing or something between two Internet connections. So that traffic running on one can jump over i case of connection failing.
4 gigabit interfaces (RJ45 should work but if i can get better for reasonable price im going with it).
Hoping to get som input on this matter.
    Regards Tommy Svensson

    Tommy,
An ideal solution for what your looking for would be either the rv120, wrvs4400n, or Sa500 series router and possibly an SG300 series switch in layer 2 mode.  This will allow the router to cover the vlan setup and intervlan routing if need be.  The switch will allow you to configure qos and you can trust the qos coming into the router on the lan side.
The other option you could get gigibit router and put the sg300 series switch in layer 3 mode and let it handle the vlans and qos at that point.  The only thing about this setup, any router that is gigibit we have will be able to facilitate vlans and inter-vlan routing.
Hope this gave you some ideas as to designing the network.

  • Looking for a security product

    Hi,
I'm looking for a SINGLE security product in order to do:
    - Network Admission Control
    - Limit the bandwidth for some users or some groups of users
    - Block peer-to-peer traffic
    Can someone suggest?
    Thank you.
    Best regards.
    Massimiliano.

    Massimiliano,
ISR routers can do the job for you. Here is the link for NAC support on ISR:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/security/nac/appliance/support_guide/license.html#wp54131
Zone-Based FW has the capacity to filter peer-to-peer traffic on the ISR.
QoS functionality should provide you the ability for bw limit.
    Thanks,

  • Movie rentals that I downloaded onto iMac with Lion to do not show up on ATV 2 in menu for computers.  Purchased movies show up just fine.  What to do or look for?

I have an imac that is running lion and an Apple TV generation 2.  I have rented a movie from itunes and it shows up on my imac in Itunes under a rental icon, and will play fine on my computer.  However, it does not show up as choice to play on my apple tv.  I have homesharing enabled and everything else works fine including purchased movies that are on my imac, but no where does it show rental movies.
What do I look for?  What do I do to play the rental movie on my apple tv 2?

    Answer to my own question:
Wait until the downloaded rental has completed its download to the imac.  This took a long time for me, since it was part of several things that I was downloading at the same time.
Finally, it showed up on my apple tv.   Interestingly, I was able to watch much of the movie on my iMac before the movie finished its download and was available to the ATV 2.

I have been a fan of Haxial KDX for the longest time, but due to the bugs, etc., I would like to move on.  I'm looking for a secure darknet/bbs styled program that supports chat, filesharing, and of basic user management (who can login, who can't, etc..).  I have been asking this question all over the web, and haven't gotten (or found) a single response.  Waste has never worked right for me, by the way.  I would definitely prefer it to be open source, which is why I thought it best to post here.  Please help out, or at least direct me somewhere where I should ask... Thanks.
As an aside, the guy who wrote KDX and Hotline (Adam?? • Looking for a simple, standalone desktop app for web stats

Well, I see they've changed the forums here again. SIGH.
Anyway, a certain web host has eliminated AWStats from it's shared hosting. So I used Webmaster Tools. And now they've changed, and no longer display the simple visitors and hits. Google Analytics is way too complex for what I need, as are many of the stats programs I've looked into.
I can download the daily Apache log files, that's no problem. Just looking for a small standalone program to import these and show the data like AWStats.  Any suggestions? The only other options would be to go to a different web host. Not a big deal overall, but I would rather not deal with the hassle, especially the migrating the database.

Not sure of standalone 'desktop' apps. But check out http://www.openwebanalytics.com/ and Web Analytics in Real Time | Clicky  - they're both very intuitive and easy to use with a lot more simplified stats than Google Analytics.
