E2500 WAN question

I don't have any problems with my e2500, however I do have a question in regards to the IP address that my wireless router distributes.  Our network consists of a Cisco SA520w security appliance which gives our LAN a 10.15.1.x subnet.  I have a Linksys e2500 acting as an access point within the subnet (it is at 10.15.1.x).  Of course the IP address is 192.168.1.1 of the access point and anyone connecting to it receives an IP of 192.168.1.x.
If someone is hardwired into the network , they receive an IP of 10.15.1.x and can access any of the servers within the LAN; my question is why can  users (who are on the WAP) access the LAN subnets?  WAP users receive 192.168.1.x address's while LAN users receive 10.15.1.x address's.

The E2500 is a wireless router not a simple access point. You have configured it as router. The LAN side is 192.168.1.* and everything connected on the internet port is "internet". That's why clients on the E2500 can connect to everything.
If you want to use it as access point only you should set it up as access point: configure the internet connection mode to "bridge mode". Assign a free IP address in your 10.15.1.* network to the E2500. Now everything is in the same LAN IP subnet.

  • RV320 DHCP and WAN questions

    Hello all,
So far I love the RV320 its super fast and works really good (with 2 WAN connections).
I though have a few questions hoping someone could tell me:
    1) Under DHCP Server it gives the option of to use DNS from ISP or DNS Proxy, what is the main difference between those two options?
Right now I have this set to DNS from ISP.
    2) What are the pros and cons of enabling IPV6 DHCP and what is the best setting for that (Yes both ISPs I have suppor IPV6)?
    3) What is the best option to set as client lease time for DHCP? (its set to 1440 default).
    4) On the System Summary page I see both WAN1 and WAN2 connected (i set it to
Load Balance (Auto Mode) but for WAN2 i always see: Connected (Inactive)
    Why does it say inactive?
    Thank you!

Found answers to most things now except for:

A customer has several offices. Each office has a separate Exchange Server. The partner was considering a single Unity deployment connected to all of the exchange servers over the WAN, but has decided against that because the latency of the WAN is too high to do this. They are looking for a best practice way of deploying Unity for these multiple Exchange servers at multiple sites. This might mean a separate Unity server for each exchange server at each site .
However, we’re wondering if there is a better way to do this. With multiple unity servers we’ll likely have different prefixes for each unity server at each location . This is something that the customer would like to avoid. We’re wondering if there any best practices for a deployment like this that we can offer as options for the customer.

I have found some related information but really customer is altogether looking for an option away from Exchange networking over WAN.
    I found:
    “Multi-Site WAN with Distributed Messaging”
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/voice_ip_comm/unity/5x/design/guide/5xcudg040.html#wp1077309
“Networking Options Requirements for Cisco Unity”
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/sw/voicesw/ps2237/prod_installation_guides_list.html
Design Guide for Cisco Unity also talk as much is there in the first URL.
    Please Help!

This may be counter to your customer's desire or requirements but I must ask the question.  Has the customer considered Unity Connection vs. Unity?  Granted, Unity Connection provides integrated messaging whereas Unity is the unified messaging application; however, CUC has become Cisco's flagship messaging product over the last couple of years and I only see this expanding to be honest.  So, for new installs - I push hard on Unity Connection.  Sometimes, it's a sell but sometimes the customer has a hard requirement for UM and thus you have to go with UM.  In your scenario, your customer could potentially save a LARGE amount of money as CUC is not dependent upon Exchange at all; however, you still have the option to tie into Exchange 2003/2007 as an external service where users can access messages in a 3rd-party message store and also access calendar data and so forth.  The platform is very feature rich.  Many of my current Unity customers are migrating off of the platform to the more "agnostic" CUC platform to avoid issues caused by such dependence on AD/Exchange.  In addition, as Microsoft continues to develop and push it's own UM solution - integration for Unity is being forced to change (ex: changes to MAPI in 2010 caused problems for Cisco and required them to rework a bit of the underpinning integration points between Unity and Exchange).  With CUC, you also have the flexibility to implment a dial plan within voicemail system itself...not to mention it is extremely scalable.

  • Wireless Router WAN Question

I currently have a WRT600N wireless router. This router allows me to release the WAN IP and get a new IP. It may rotate through what ever my service provider is offering but it is always different at least 4 times in a row. I have another cable connection upstairs and a different type of router. This router does not get a new IP when I do a ipconfig /release, instead, it will get the same ip back all day long.
I put the WRT600N on the upstairs cable modem and got the results I expected based on what I saw downstairs. So my question is, If I am looking for a new router for the upstairs connection, what spefically would I be looking for that allows the router to get a new IP everytime I disconnect and reconnect. I am looking for an alternative to the WRT600N or a location to purchase the WRT600N.
Again, I am talking about the WAN port, not the LAN port. I know that some service providers lock the IP down by MAC, but that is not the case in my situation.
    Thanks in Advance,
    Brandon

OK, one more time, in better english. I have a computer and a WRT600N on on cable modem. And I have a computer and a WRT54G on another cable modem. When I access the http server of the WRT600N via a web browser and release the WAN interface IP, and then renew it, I get a new IP address. I can do this over and over and I get a new IP everytime.
From the other computer, I access the http server of the WRT54G via a web browser and release the WAN interface IP, and then renew it, I get the same IP address. I can do this over and over and I get the same IP everytime.
When I move the WRT600N to the upstairs cable modem, I get a different IP everytime I  release and renew the IP address (Via the web interface of the router).
So I know that it is some capability of this particular router. The cable modem accounts are from the same company. So my question was, "What is it in this particular router that allows the WAN interface to get a new IP everytime it release and renews?".
I know how DHCP works, and how ISP can sometimes lock an IP to a MAC address for a period of hours, or indefinetly. However, that is not the case in my situation. If you do not know what allows this particular router to get a new and different IP each time it connects that is ok.
I can not make this any clearer.
    Thanks,
    Brandon

  • T500 W WAN questions

It's time to regale you all again with my overly-annoying basic questions!
according to Lenovo, my T500 is 'Mobile broadband ready'. Does this mean I can shove in any WWAN card and expect it to work? Or will only the Lenovo-supplied cards (like the ones for sale in the online store) work? Does the antenna come pre-installed?
    Thanks.
    CJ

The WWAN antennas are pre-installed in a 'Mobile broadband ready' ThinkPad, and you will definitely need to use a Lenovo supplied WWAN card.
I can personally confirm that the Ericsson WWAN card available through the Lenovo Australia web site does work well in a T400 2764CTO with the Telstra Mobile Broadband Next G service (note this is NOT the Bigpond Next G service).

  • 1921 15Mbps high speed WAN question and suitability

    Hi All,
I'm looking for some advice on router suitability for the following scenario:
I require an inter vlan router to route approx 200 devices consisting of 150x PC's (Physical & Virtual) and 50x IP Phones.  There will only be a maximum of 5x VLANs.  The router will be primarily used for inter VLAN routing as well as routing to the outside world.  Potentially we may add some ACL's for protecting inter VLAN traffic, but that's basically it.
The router will be connected to the outside via ethernet and a Cisco ASA 5505.  The ASA will provide NAT/Firewall/QoS and packet shaping functionality.  The ASA 5505 is connecting to the outside via cable modem providing 80Mbps down/20Mbps up.
I'd like to understand if the 1921 is suitable for this task specification wise, in addition to confirming the following statement which appears on the datasheet:
'The Cisco 1900 Series enables deployment in high-speed WAN environments with concurrent services enabled up to 15 Mbps.'
    http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/products/collateral/routers/1900-series-integrated-services-routers-isr/data_sheet_c78-598389.html
I assume the above statement is is only effective when used in conjunction with a HWIC and not relevant in my scenario where connection will be via Ethernet and the ASA5505/Cable modem?
The other reason for querying this is a supplier is trying to push me towards a 2911, due to in their opinion that the 1921 is under spec'd for our requirements?
I'd really like to hear some honest answers on this.  I've seeked some advice elsewhere and had some mixed opinions.  I'm more than happy to  go with a 2911 if it's going to be better suited for our needs, but I really don't see how a 1921 won't be suited for our needs?
    TIA
    Kevin

  • RV 320 / 325 Dual WAN question

I have a switch that I have configured with a voice vlan. I would like to use WAN 1 as the primary for voice and have other network traffic use WAN 2 for its primary and have both sets of traffic failover if either connection goes down. It this even possible with these two routers. It seems from the documentation that I can do one or the other but not both...
    Any help would be appreciated.

when load balancing and a wan fails its traffic will go across the only available wan left. so you can set up policy based routing to wan 1 for a specific protocol, and when that wan fails its traffic will flow through wan 2.

  • RV320 / 325 Dual WAN Question

I am trying to setup these routers to basically take voice traffic and have it use one of the two WAN connections as it's primary and all other traffic use the other connection. I would like it so that if either connection fails they also failover between each other.  I can figure out how to split the traffic but can't seem to find a way to do the fail over as well... Is this possible with either of these routers?
    Thanks,
    Rod

    Hello Rod,
Your assumption is correct.  When you go in to setup the protocol binding simply select all traffic, with the source from VLAN 1, and specify the WAN you would like it to use, and do the same thing for the other VLAN to the other WAN.
Your rule would look something like this:
Service should be all traffic, source IP would be a range covering one VLAN, destination would be 0.0.0.0 to 0.0.0.0 and then select the WAN you want to use.
Then just setup another rule doing the same thing for the second VLAN and pointing out the other WAN port.
That way VLAN 1 would always use WAN1, unless it failed, and VLAN 2 would always use WAN2, unless that failed.  This allows you to utilize your links how you would like and still have failover.
Another thing to keep in mind with protocol binding is that most secure traffic (HTTPS, SSH, etc) usually needs to be bound to one WAN, however since you are setting up a binding for all traffic on the entire VLAN, that shouldn't be necessary for you.

  • Wan port question

Could someone explain to me the Ethernet wan port menu. I'm having a lot of connection problems with Airplay. It keeps dropping and coming back on.
I checked with my ISP and the signal (cable) is 100% stable so the problem has to be my AE.
If I change the settings to 10Mbps/half Duplex, it seems to work ok for a while. But Automatic is a definite no-no.
Why all those choices, especially half and full duplex and what do they mean in terms of overall performance ?
    Thx

My question to you is did this always happen or just started happening with this modem & AirPort base station. What is the exact model of your AirPort? How about the modem?
This has always happened since installation 3 months ago
    AE 1143 - Modem is : Motorola SB5101
Is 8 Mbps the maximum rated download speed that your ISP is providing you for Internet service?
    Yes
Is 8 Mbps the maximum rated download speed that your ISP is providing you for Internet service?
    Speed test (http://www.speedtest.net/)
    up: 8.17 - down: 1.02
Changing the WAN Ethernet port speed will do nothing to improve AirPlay's performance.
But it does ! With lower speed = less drop in feed. Or maybe it's just the fact that I change from one to another.

  • Quick questions (bulk operations, WAN, provisioning, split brain)

Thank you for your assistance with the following questions..
    1. Can I use the "disk overflow" feature when using the "partitioned cache" topology? I need to just do puts and gets.
    2. Are bulk operations (i.e. bulk put, bulk get, bulk erase) available in all cache topologies? I am interested in bulk put/get when using a "partitioned cache" and when using your "WAN capability" to connect geographical dispersed clusters (Coherence*Extend). Do you guarantee data and event delivery over the WAN?
    3. Does the WAN capability (Coherence*Extend) allow multiple clusters to talk with each other (N:N) or does it only support a "star topology" (1 main cluster connected to N other "peripheral" clusters)?
    4. As a result of a load bottleneck (i.e. a cache server(s) running too hot) in a "partitioned region" topology, can I "on-the-fly" add new cache servers/boxes to load balancing my "client load"? What client load balancing policies are typically recommended (i.e. sticky, random)? How does dynamic provisioning of new servers (e.g., adding more RAM to my distributed cache) affect the hashing of my map regions and my network bandwidth? What kind of performance would I expect if I add one or more new cache members when I was close to have an OOM on one or more of my already running cache servers? Even if I was not close to an OOM, what kind of network spike would I expect and what kind of client operation latency should I expect?
    5. Could I have more information to understand your "data location transparency"?
    6. How do you solve "split brain" problems (i.e. sets of members get separated and later try to rejoin cluster)? Do you have or is it possible to implement a "quorum-based policy" to decide who should live and who should die? We have seen "split brain" problems with messaging retransmission storms in the past and are looking for options.

    Hi user614602,
    1 - 3. Yes to all.
4 - 6. Those are quite advanced and open-ended questions (and by no means "quick"). Please contact your sales rep to schedule a conference call to discuss your requirements and how Coherence addresses the issues you rise.

As long as the Macintosh HD 2 partition is just the same size as Macintosh HD to avoid problems in the future, then you can clone one to the other using Carbon Copy Cloner, then use Disk Utility to Repair Permissions on both and if you need too you can hold the option key down while booting and select the #2 partition to boot from.
However you need to set CCC to maintain a pure clone, or else by default it will save the changes between clone updates and overfill your #2 partition.
Also the #2 is merely a bootable backup alternative and for retrieving the rarely occuring deleted files, don't use #2 for storage or anything you want to save pernamently.
In addition you also need external clones and backups, as the machine may fail or get lost etc.,

  • SRP541W Multiple WAN configuration question

    Hi all,
I have an SRP541W with two ADSL modems attached to it. Both are running bridged mode with PPPoE connections to two different ISPs, (TPG and Telstra Business Direct). The TPG connection is far cheaper, and has a much higher download limit. Sadly, if I leave the router in "load Balance" mode for the WAN, it "prefers" the Tesltra connection because it's faster. I want downloads for movies/music, Youtube, Internet Radio, etc, to go through the TPG connection. Is it possible to do this in the router, or would I need to set up a proxy server, (or some other external device/application)?

    Thanks Christopher.
I had found that and tried a value of 2, then 3. When it didn't seem to make a huge difference I decided to post the question here. I've reached the download limit for this month so I will try again after the 17th.
What I was hoping for, was the ability to somehow select traffic types to go through specific connections. I used to be able to do that on the Snapgear router I had, but it died, and MacAfee in thier infinite wisdom, decided to kill that product line when they purchased the company.
Not being a router guru, and never having done the course on how to program the Cisco IOS, I chose the SRP router in the hopes it would do what I need without having to sit a course that costs 3 times as much as the router. Sadly it appears my hopes we in vain.

  • Linksys E2500. No WAN light or connection

Just bought the linksys E2500 as an upgrade for a my Trendnet 150 wireless N router. I have a motorolla surfboard modem with time warner roadrunner cable internet. After connecting the router I have no internet connection. I do not get a light on the WAN connection after the ethernet cable is attached. I know the light works because when I power it on all the lights come on. I cloned the MAC address but this did not work. I have searched the forums for hours and tried different ideas to no avail. My PC recognized the router and I'm able to get to all the settings but cannot establish a connection from the router to the modem. I also tried different ethernet cables to eliminate that possiblilty. Any ideas?
I'm about to just return it.

You can perform a loop back test. Connect one Ethernet connection to one of the Ethernet port of the router and connect the other end to the WAN port of the router. Connect another Ethernet to another Ethernet port on the router and connect the other end to your computer. Access the setup page of the router and go to the “Status” tab. Check the IP address. If it is getting a 127.0.0.1 address (loop back address), it means the internet port is working but the light is not. If it is getting 0.0.0.0 then that means the internet port is not detecting any connections and it is defective.

  • Question about VPN connections on a E2500 router

    Hello,
I am working with vpn setups for the first time, so I have some questions I would really appriciate some help with. I would like to be able to connect to a computer on a home network through a linksys E2500 router. I have found alot of documentation on connecting to an external vpn from a computer on the lan side of the router, but nothing on connecting from the outside in. The router does have a static ip address with my internet provider, so I can contact the router from the outside. But makeing the connection to the computer on the other side of the router is where I am missing something or I dont realize that it is not possible. On the lan side I am using DHCP to assign the address to the computer I want to connect to. Perhaps I need to make it have a static address also? I realize that when I configure the connection from the outside that I need to direct the connection to the remote computer in some way, unless vpn connections are fully passed through the router and the connection issue I am haveing is with the "inside" computer.
    Other info:
I am using windows 7 for the vpn access
Thank you in advance for your help.

  • WRT16N V3 Questions (also E2500)

    Hello,
My father-n-law wanted to dump his internet subscription so he purchase the WRT16N v3 and connected it to my computer modem several years ago.  Since then, my computer harddrive died and I purcahsed a new computer.  I never reinstalled the software back to my computer and the we were able to connect new devices up to router until recently.
Currently there are 2 PCs, 1 laptop, 1 iPod Touch, 1 Kindle Fire, and my Android phone connected to the router.  However, I was unable to connect my mothers Kindle Fire to the router.  So my questions are:
Is it true that only 5 devices can connect to this router?
If I install the software, and update the firmware do I have to reset the modem? Does this change the password?
If I do all the upgrades will I be able to connect more devices?
Also, when I called Cisco they said the E2500 can connect up to 31 devices... is this true?
Thank  you for your help with my questions.  Its been difficult to find answers any where else.

    Hi there,
Let's answer your quiries one at a time.
Is it true that only 5 devices can connect to this router?
If I install the software, and update the firmware do I have to reset the modem? Does this change the password?
If I do all the upgrades will I be able to connect more devices?
    1. NO. Your router can hold up to 50 devices connected to it via wired or wireless connection.
    2. NO. Basically you are trying to reconfigure the router here. You can run the cd or you could also manually set it up. If you upgrade the firmware of the router, yes you have to reset the router not the modem to make sure the new software is loaded correctly though I do not recommend upgrading the firmware if everything seems to be ok with it. Yes the Password will change once you reset the router, basically it's just like your setting up the router for the first time. Back to its original set up. Please note that before you configure the router, make sure the internet is working on the computer connected straight to the modem (ISP).
    3. Yes definitely .
