E3000 and Westell DSL Modem for AT&T

I am setting up new DSL service through AT&T using a Westell modem and a Cisco E3000 router.  Does anyone have any suggestions on the best way to configure these two together?  I am not sure what services should best be handled by the router or handled by the modem.

As the E3000 can do PPPoE the best way to set it up would be to use the Westall only as modem and the E3000 for PPPoE and everything internet related. For this, you have to configure the Westell into "bridge" mode. You didn't write the exact model of your modem. In a manual for a 6100 it should be configurable on "VC Configuration" where you can change the protocol from PPPoE to "Bridge" and "Bridge" mode (not Routed Bridge or other). In bridge mode it works like a normal modem would do. You can then connect the internet port of the E3000 to the modem and configure the E3000 for PPPoE. It should then be able to connect directly to the internet. Please check the manual for the Westell for more information. It should be the same for the Siemens.

  • Airport Extreme and Westell DSL modem

    Hi all,
I am a MCSE Certified Professional in Windows 2000.
I got a new Apple Airport Extreme router to replace my Sister's Netgear router. I kept having to reset it all the time. In setting up the Airport I found out that the Westell modem actually has a router built in. I did not know that before.
My question is whether to set this up as a router or a base station. I am know that setting up the Airport as a base station is the recommended way to go. But, I am thinking that it is also not as secure. Also I don't have as much control over port forwarding and VPN access, etc. Also how does the DHCP IP addressing work going only through the Westell modem? Right now I have the Airport setup as a router with NAT unchecked. And an IP address set to something other than 192.168.1.1. Which is what the Westell is set for.
The only think I dislike about the new Aiport Extreme is the fact that I can not change the gateway ip address. I can't understand why Apple decided to do it this way. In the Router configuration as described above the network is working very well so far.
    What are your thoughts.
    Thanks,
    John Gerard

    John,
The 6100 is an older product (~2006?). Depending on how long your unit has been in service, there may have been firmware updates released by Verizon which will greatly affect the appearance and contents of pages presented by its embedded server. I advise you to update the 6100 firmware if needed, before changing the configuration. Verizon will often ship out a current DSL router to Mac subscribers on request, since Westell routers can't be flashed from a Mac. (You'd probably get a 7500). If you do choose to continue configuring the 6100, look for an "Advanced" tab where you can turn-off IP address distribution for a private LAN. That should effectively put the 6100 into bridge mode. However, Verizon employs dynamically-assigned DNS servers; without locally-stored DNS entries, I'm uncertain about how well the 6100 will continue to negotiate DNS lookups in bridge mode.
I can't offer any more-specific advice about configuring the 6100 since I've never used the product. However, based on what I do know about Verizon's suport for their hardware, I still believe that you'll be creating extra challenges down the road by chosing to configure any DSL router as a bridge, since Verizon won't provide troubleshooting support for that configuration.
Now that this discussion has substantially drifted away from anything relating to an Apple AirPort, I believe you'll get better configuring advice from Verizon DSL tech support (800 567-6789)  and/or Verizon's DSL "High-Speed Internet" Help pages. So that other forum visitors may benefit from reading this discussion, please come back and post a descrption of the solution that worked for you.
    Thanks and good luck!

  • Connecting a WRT54G Wireless Broadband Router to a Westell DSL Modem

For some reason I can't get my wireless router to finalize the last step on installation on my desktop. I followed all the tutorials from the linksys help center and I still can't get the router to install correctly. I did ipconfig/release and ipconfig/renew. I made sure the IP address was in the 169.xxxxx range. Changed the default IP on the web based utility from 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.2.1  . When I changed all of the info mentioned before I could get internet service to my base computer, but I could not get passed the last step of installing the router and no wireless to any laptops. I have done everything by the book and it still doesn't work. If there is anyone that could help me, I would really appreciate it. I have DSL Internet service throught AT&T. My router is a WRT54G and my DSL Modem is a Westell Modem, Its black square shaped with five lights on the front.

  • Flaky Connectivity WRT600N and Westell DSL

I want to connect the Westell DSL modem using bridge connection to WRT600N for routing and access restrictions on my network. However, in this configuration, certain pages or certain parts of pages disconnect my WRT600N. I know it is a problem with the linksys because if I take it out of the network (plug desktop directly to DSL modem), then I can access everything. This is not a problem with 99% of the internet, but the 1% it gives me a problem on is the stuff that I need from time to time.
EXAMPLE: my favorite electronics vendor Mouser.com
    go to http://www.mouser.com/Passive-Components/Resistors/Carbon-Composition-Resistors/_/N-5g9p/
Ok, no problem, now click one of the filters like power rating = 1 watt and click on apply filter
Now my page disappears and and I get
    The webpage cannot be found
HOWEVER, if I disconnect the WRT600N completly and plug my computer directly into the DSL modem, I get no error and can display my page full of resistors with no problem.
I have looked at everything I can think of including MTU ping test settings, etc....

I set the Westell to bridge connect and then set up the PPPoE connnection in the Linksys modem.
I have used it like this for quite some time, and every now and then, I get to a place on the internet that I just cannot go, like my example.
If I setup the PPPoe in the Westell and dont use the linksys to manage my connection, then the problem goes away. Of course, to switch back and forth, I have to reconfigure the router and the modem and switch my DHCP from one to the other, etc.
Using the DSL modem to manage the connection is not really a solution -  this is why I bought this particular router. I wanted access control and to be able to set schedules for devices. I have a 15 year old who will stay up all night on his laptop, etc.
I have  the latest firmware, ( 1.01.36 build 4) I checked again a couple of days ago. I have configured and reconfigured that router so many times I cannot count.
Are there any particular settings you are thinking about I should check?

  • DSL Modem for Time Capsule (UK)

    Hello,
I will move soon and have a BT Broadband Internet Access available.
I know that BT is sending a BT Home Hub and I would like to combine this with my Time Capsule.
I looked a little bit in the internet and found that there are sometime some problems with this combination.
Because I don't need the phone which comes with the BT Home Hub I was thinking about buying a quiet cheep DSL Modem and use it with the Time Capsule. But I don't know what is good and what not.
So I would be really glad if somebody would share his knowledge about some experience with the combination of DSL Modem and Timecapsule and which DSL Modem he or she is using.
    Thank you in advance

I use ATT, I actually don't know which kind of modem to look at, thats why i set up this thread, but i actually tried hooking up my time capsule to the previous 2WIRE seeing if the time capsule could just bypass the router and use the modem which it did. I am just looking for a modem thats not to expensive and will work good with the time capsule. Today i also tried configuring the time capsule to work with my older PC. So far, the only problem i have is when the PC tries to connect with the actual 1TB backup, i input the password, but it says to make sure netBIOS is enabled. Do you have any idea what that is?

  • Connecting a powerbook G3 to the internet via ethernet and a DSL modem. Does the G3 have the ability to do this?

I am trying to connect an older powerbook G3 (M4753) to the internet via ethernet and a DSL modem. Does the G3 have the ability to do this? I'm having alot of trouble. G3 Dialog box states the DHCP server will populate IP address, etc. It does not. The G3 also insists I enter the DHCP client ID.

  • Best Router with DSL Modem for use with AT&T DSL and Airport Express?

I recently had my old 2WIRE from AT&T DSL service die, so purchased a new 2WIRE 2701HG-B. My old 2WIRE worked with my Airport Express, which is hooked up to my DVR for DirecTV use. The new 2WIRE apparently is not compatible with the Airport Express, so I returned it and purchased a NetGear Wireless-N 300 Router with DSL modem. While this one does work with the Airport Express setup, it runs very slow. This router has mediocre reviews, so I'd like to find a better one.
I'd appreciate any suggestions for a Router w Modem that would work best with my AT&T DSL and Airport Express (802.11n) within the $100 - $150 price range. Thanks!

Configure the Express as a bridge: Connect via "Ethernet", and set Connection Sharing to "off (bridge mode)".
The switches ought not to be a problem, and I don't know why your router froze. The Express is simply another wired client, just like a computer might be.
do I turn off DHCP on the router,
No. Something has to provide routing functions so leave the Linksys alone.

  • WRT54G & Westell DSL Modem/Router

I want to use the WRT54G as a WAP or signal repeater to extend the range of my Westell 327W DSL modem/wireless router. Is there a way to do that? I'd like to put it halfway between my wireless router and another wireless computer in my house.
Message Edited by rweintra on 08-08-2007 05:13 AM

That router can not be used as a repeater.  You can turn it into a wireless access point but it will not repeat the signal from another wireless router with the linksys firmware.  You can try to look for a third party firmware that may give you that option but if you do install a third party firmware it will void any warrenty you have on that router.
Check this LINK for other firmware.

  • Westell DSL modem connects to WRT54GX2 SRX 200 with wire

I follow the instructions found on this site..  The first couple of times the procedure did not work.  On the MODEM ( Westell) needed a manual  reset.  At that time  the network starting working.
A note needs to added to this instruction as stated above.   The title of the instruction  is:
Setting up DSL on a Linksys Router using a wired connection
    Thanks for the good info

    Mahalo nui,
Hawaiian Telcom, my internet provider did, a while back, go into the bridge setup for the WRT54G, and yes, you are absolutely correct that it need be hardwired into the DSL modem.
Since going wireless is the goal, I see no extra benefit to the additional WRT54G hardware.
From the Airport Extreme Setup Manual, under "Using the Airport Extreme with a Broadband Internet Service", again, still need to hardwire to the DSL modem.
No mention of the "Wireless Bridge" function so I am unsure, though will try to use the USB port on the Dell to make her wireless. If not there, then maybe the USB Iomega Drive. As the Iomega reads both PC and Mac files which is important, wireless access would be a benefit.
So my thoughts are that as long as the DSL modem wireless network coverage is acceptable, there is no benefit to hardwiring in additional APs with wireless capability.
Maybe though, the additional hardware would diminish the click-clicking. On the other hand, a square waveform is easy to enhance and modulate with analog voice, think!....
    Thanks, aloha

  • Upgrading from Westell DSL modem to ActionTec

    Hello all,
I have a situation where I'd like to migrate from an older Westell modem (A90 series) over to a newer ActionTec modem.
The problem I have is this: I don't remember the IP address of the ActionTec modem. I'm under the impression that I need the MAC of the older modem in order to have Verizon DSL vadilate my login (where I live, Verizon DSL uses DHCP instead of PPPoE).
What do I need to do in order to migrate from the older DSL modem to the newer modem?
Should I contact Verizon support to have them change my MAC authentication using the new ActionTec modem?
Or... am I missing something here?
    Thanks much.

    Ok.
#1 Check your IP Address, Subnet Mask, Default Gateway, and DNS Servers on your computer.
This means for example, if on Windows XP...
    a) Go to Start -> Run.
    b) Type in cmd and press enter.
    c) In the new window, called the command prompt, type in ipconfig /all and press enter.
#2 Go to a site that displays the public IP.
    Such as http://whatismyip.com/
#3 Check to see if any of the IP Addresses on your computer is the same as the one on a site that displays the public IP.
#4 Only if  an IP Address are the same as, then the MAC Address that you need to use is the MAC of your computer.
Clue/Hint: The MAC Address on a Windows computer, is dislayed at  ipconfig /all and is called the physical address.
#5 If you are sure that none of the IP Addresses on your computer is the same as the one on a site that displays the public IP, then with your web browser go to the default gateway and log-in to the Westell as need be.
#6 If you have no idea of what the user name and password to your Westell modem is, then go find the manual for it...
#7 Also if you are sure that none of the IP Addresses on your computer is the same as the one on a site that displays the public IP, what is the exact model of that Westell modem?
    ^^

  • Can't find driver update for Webshuttle DSL modem - for Mac OS 10.4

    Hi!
I recently updated to Mac OS 10.4.8 and discovered my DSL modem no longer functioned. I use the Webshuttle DSL from Hermstedt. I went online to hermstedt.com to download the driver for Mac OS 10.4 - I was using Mac OS 10.3 prior to the upgrade, and found that there are no longer drivers to download as the company has gone bust. Can anyone advise me on how to get the driver for Webshuttle so I can use the modem on my Mac OS 10.4.8 system?
    Hope you can help.
    Regards,
    Veronica

    I assume that's a USB Modem?
If so, I have many differen't brands where the drivers from 10.2.x and 10.3.x still work in 10.4.10, but the original installs had to be uninstalled, or hand remove all files, then reinstall, reboot seems to work.
No idea if that'll work for you.

  • Which Ethernet DSL Modem for Airport Extreme?

I was lucky enough to receive an Airport Extreme Base Station for Christmas and would like to know opinions and experiences with DSL Ethernet Modems and which are compatible. Most seem to have a download bandwidth limit of 8Mbps which is what I currently receive but eventually I would hope to get a higher speed without having to replace the modem again.
I currently have a Netgear DG834PN wireless router/modem which has a WAN port. Until I get a new modem would it be possible to connect the Airport Extreme to this after turning off the router side on the Netgear? If this is possible is this a better solution to buying a modem or will I benefit from just having a dedicated modem.
Thanks in advance for any replies and Happy Christmas.

As a disclaimer, I reside in New Zealand, but the findings should still bear relevance.
I have used Alcatel (also marketed under the 'Thomson' name) ADSL modems for the last 7-8 years, and haven't had an issue. One of the reasons I choose Alcatel is they are the leading manufacturer of the DSLAMs which sit on the ISPs side of the connection.
We've just upgraded from an Alcatel One Touch Pro to a Thomson SpeedTouch 546(i) v6, and I'm very impressed. Testing shows the modem syncs at a higher speed than other brands such as D-Link, Netgear, etc and is more tolerant of line noise. I've never experienced the drop outs which certain brands featuring the Texas Instruments AR7 chip do - for more on this, take a look here.
I recommend talking to your more tech savvy neighbours and friends (preferably using the same ISP) and see what their experiences are.

  • RV110w wont connect with dsl modem for VPN

    Hello,
I have bought a RV110w router and I also have a D-Link 320B DSL modem (which is replacing my standard Sky broadband router/modem) and I am having problems getting them set up correctly, firstly for the internet to work and secondly to use the VPN function on the router.
The D-Link 320B DSL modem works when connected directly into my laptop via an ethernet connection, however when I connect the modem into the RV110w the internet will not work.  The dashboard on the RV110w says that the internet is "up" and gives an IP address but the internet does not work on any computer on the network.  Any help here would be hugely appreciated!
After I have overcome the problem above I then want to be able to get the VPN working which I have also had no luck with.
The RV110w is set to 192.168.1.250 and the D-Link is set to 192.168.1.1.  If I turn off DHCP on the D-Link I cannot then get access to the modem at all, the only way I can then get access is to hold down reset and go back to factory settings.
I have been trying to do this for about two weeks now with no luck, no matter what settings I try it just does not seem to work!!
    Matt.

    Dear Matthew,
Thank you for reaching Small Business Support Community.
In order to accomplish both needs, you would first need to configure the PPPoE and DHCP settings on the RV110 and set the D-Link for bridge mode only so that the xDSL negotiation is performed by the Cisco router and be the DHCP server for the LAN at the same time.
    You need to first configure the PPPoE parameters on the RV110; please refer to page 23, chapter 2 of the admin guide;
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/routers/csbr/rv110w/administration/guide/rv110w_admin.pdf
The required PPPoE settings are provided by your ISP and you may also copy those current settings from the D-Link modem (unfortunately I cannot tell you where they are since I am not familiar with the 320B model).  You also need to set the D-Link for bridge mode since the PPPoE settings are now going to be entered on the RV110.
To set the RV110 as a DHCP server please refer to page 31, chapter 2 on the same admin guide.
You can have either a remote access VPN or a site to site VPN configured on this RV110, please check chapter 5 on admin guide. Notice for either one you would need to have static public IP addresses or a domain name provided by your ISP intended for a VPN tunnel, and in case they do provide you with neither one, then you would have to get a third party dynamic DNS service to accomplish this task.  I have personally used DynDNS and it works just fine.
I hope you find this information useful and please do not hesitate to reach me back if there is any further assistance I may help you with.
    Kind regards,

  • TC and Netopia DSL Modem

I set up my TC today as a replacement wireless connection for my D-Link wireless router. Everything configured as I expected. The only glitch is that I am only able to access the internet on one computer on the network at a time, if I try to access the internet on another computer, I have to release the connection. (This was never an issue when the D-Link was active as my wireless hub).
Upon looking at my DSL modem configuration page, I see the following statement:
"This modem will allow only one active Internet connection at a time. When the connection is in use and another attempt is made to access the Internet from another computer, the modem will ask for a logon password to switch the connection to the computer making the request."
Is there a TC setting that I am overlooking that will allow me to access the internet from multiple computers on my network simultaneously?
    Thanks.

It sound like maybe you have the TC in bridge mode - which is a least one way you would see the symptoms you report.
In the Airport Utility -> Manual Setup -> Internet at the bottom is "Connection Sharing" If that is set to "Off (Bridge Mode)" I think that's your problem.
    A good resource is:
