E3000 severe drop in speed from ethernet connection to wireless

I have an E3000 connected to COMCAST. My download speed with an Ethernet connection to my computer (Windows 7) is just over 60Mbbs. When I connect to the internet using wireless only (computer adjacent to the router), my download speed drops 50% or more. Is this normal or is there some setting adjustment I need to make? I just loaded the most recent firmware for the E3000,

Its best to check speeds on wired LAN cables as there are many factors that contribute to bad results on WiFi. Different WiFi device may exhibit slower than expected results.
Wireless Configurations
What wireless modes are you using?
Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N on 2.4Ghz and single mode N or Mixed on 5Ghz?
Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz.
Try setting a manual Channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear. 13 for EU regions. Try channel 48 or 149 on 5Ghz. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_WLAN_channels

Router Placement
Forum User - "Well I feel really dumb. After moving the router away from other electronic devices my speeds are back to normal. Just a heads up for anyone experiencing slow speeds, you might want to move it away from other electronics and see if that helps."
3-6' feet minimum safe distance between devices.
Placement on main level floor and central in the building and WELL ventilated is preferred. Not in basements or closets as building materials, or near by electronics devices could interfere or hinder good signal propagation.

  • Automatic switch over from wired ethernet connection to wireless (different internet networks)

I have an Imac connect to 2 different internet service providers 1) a wired connection via ethernet giving a 10mbps download speed but unfortunatley the signal can randomly drop for a period of seconds, minutes or even hours, which I then have to manually disable the ethernet connection and switch to the wireless provider, a tedious task..
I was wondering if there is a way whereby i can set the ethernet conection to automically switch to the wireless connection during the periods explained above?
    Thanks for your assictance.
    David

    OK, thanks for the update.
Let's try to figure out which device is actually providing the PPPoE service. It will be either your modem or the AirPort Extreme router.
Normally, the PPPoE connection service is established on the modem by using a web page for configuration. If you have setup the PPPoE service this way, then the AirPort Extreme must be set to Connect Using -- Ethernet.
Please use your computer to check some settings as follows:
Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click Manual Setup > Click the Internet icon
Look for the Connect Using setting near the top of the page
It will be set to either "Ethernet" or "PPPoE"
    Which setting do you see?
Note...if you are still using OS 10.4.x as you indicate, this may not be the path to find the setup information. It may be in an older application on your computer called AirPort Admin Utility.
Sorry, I can't remember much about 10.4.x, so you may need to look around a bit on your computer.

  • Browser cannot display E3200 router web page from ethernet connection but can from wireless

I have installed my E3200 downstream from the Verizon FiOS Actiontec (going the other way disables FiOS functions).
    1.  My browser can get to the E3200 (192.168.1.2) when connected via wireless, but not when connected via ethernet cable.
         How do I fix that?
    2. When going to connect wirelessly, the 2GHz connection is visible but the 5 GHz connection is not
         (I have them named differently).
How do I see both wireless connections?

My browser cannot get to my E3200 setup web page from a wired Ethernet connection (wireless works fine).
The Linksys E3200 (1Gb ethernet, “n” wireless) is installed downstream from a Verizon FiOS Actiontec router (10/100 ethernet, “g” wireless).
I cannot put the E3200 upstream from the Verizon router because I would lose FiOS TV capabilities.
The E3200’s fixed IP address is 192.168.1.2 (the Verizon router is 192.168.1.1)
I cannot change the subnet (e.g. to 192.168.2.x)
Clearing the browser cache and rebooting both routers doesn’t help.
Both computers tested have dual band “n” network adapters.
So... wireless connection works fine, but I cannot get to the setup page via wired ethernet.
    Help?

  • How do I move my Time Capsule from Ethernet back to Wireless?

Problem: i need to back to wireless use of TC from temporary use of TC via Ethernet.
    Background:
I have had my Time Capsule set up for years as my Airport / wireless hub and backup. No problem.
Until I went to restore iPhone from Time Machine and, separate problem, need to connect my MacBook Pro to my Time Machine by Ethernet cable in order to get a direct connection (iPhoto was not restoring from Time Machine wireless, kept hitting I/O errors. Worked fine when I did it with direct Ethernet connection, another story).
NOW, I can not see to figure out how to revert back to regular, wireless, Airport hub connection (vs. Eternet direct)
    Other information:
    1. When I open Airport Utility it does not "see" my Time Capsule at all.
    2. Also, it does not let me "see" manual setup, or anything else, except for "rescan" which turns up without any results.
    3. The amber light keeps flashing.
    4. Previously I turned TC off, then on by unplugging and plugging. Flashing amber light. Same problem.
    5. All cables are plugged in tight, from ISP/FIOS cable, to TC via Ethernet, and, hopefully temporarily!, from TC to my MacBook Pro via Ethernet cable (which is what I want to undo, and go back to wireless)
    6. I am able to access Internet staying with cable running in configuration in previous point.
    Thanks in adv

You could have the TC join your existing wireless network as a client, or you can can connect the Time Capsule's WAN port to the modem/router.
In both cases the TC's "connection sharing" should be set to "Off (Bridge Mode)".
If the TC "joins" the wireless network you can only back up over your wireless connection, so the second option is preferable.

As I cannot run another Speedtester for a few hours I have "binned" the HH2 after reading all about many issues and gone over to my BB Business Router as used by GD. I will now monitor the readings from that to see if there is anything untoward happening, and post later if required.
In the meantime, can anyone suggest why there should be such a huge drop from yesterday, as all the profiles have remained the same? I had not changed anything prior to the test and there are no issues from my end.
    Steve
The older I get, the faster I was!

    hi steve,
    um one word would explaing hte change in achieved download speed and that is ;
    congestion
your stats havend changed only the availability of bandwidth for data throughput, its quite common on exchanges with lots of connections for htis to happen during peek times (all day at weekends and roughly 5pm>midnight weekdays)
that you should see such a dramatic change would suggest that a lot of people are online at the same time in your area and all sharing the same ammount of bandwitch capacity.
it could be casued by an equipment failure or just the sheer number of connections stretching available capacity beyond normal parameters, changing routers would do little to change that, the other option is you tried to run the test when you had something using internet bandwidth at your property
the fact your sync speed is virtually the same and your ip profile has remaind the same would also indicate this as opposed to any real problems with hardware
and omfg you actually achieved a download of near ip profile numbers i want your connection rates /

You should be so lucky! I tested my system today and it was the best it has been for weeks. Between the BT exchange and home it was 1.95MB, with a download speed of 1.68MB and an upload of 0.37MB.
Dropped from 17 to 6.4!!! I ask you..... And its costing me £25 a month.

  • Drop in speed from 17Mbps to 5Mbps ...

Since last Wednesday my download speed has gone from 17Mbps to 5Mbps.
The service status for my area is all green lights and nothing has changed on my end (I have been working in IT for 20+ years).
I last checked it today (Monday) at 10:30 AM.
I have been with BT for nearly a month now so it shouldn't be to do with any 'settling down' issues, i know that your speed can vary for the first two weeks.
    Any help/info greatly appreciiated.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

can you run btspeedtester and when first test completes then run diagnostic test and post results please.  if you don't have a HH4 can you post the adsl stats from your hub.  if you do have a HH4 can you go to hub manager then troubleshooting then logs and you are looking for 2 entries where the router conencted to the internet which should give connection speed and noise margin - can you post please
have you checked quiet line test to see if any noise  dial 17070 option 2  should be quiet no hiss/crackle and best with corded phone  if cordless then dull hum normal

  • Re: Drop in speed from 17Mbps to 5Mbps ...

I'm responsible for 3 separate BT broadband accounts at three different addresses in 3 parts of the country. I've recently "upgraded" all 3 routers to BT HomeHub4. Subsquently, there has been a dramatic FALL in download speeds at all 3 locations.  Can't be a coincidence!
The falls have been from 14 to 7; from 11 to 7; and from 6 to 4.
Are the new HomeHubs faulty, or is BT throttling them - perhaps to push us into ordering Infinity?
Unless things improve, I shall have to consider switching supplier, after a lifetime with BT.
    All suggestions welcome.

the probability of all 3 hubs being faulty is extrememly remote and BT do not throttle the conenctions apart from p2p and then only on contracts prior to feb 2013
the bt customers would need to post stats for assistance from forum members  only bt employees on forum are the mods and your posts do not go to bt

It depends on the connection Keith. When I was switched over to 21CN, my connection initially synced at 19759Kbps with the 6dB profile. However when the DLM tryed my connection on the 3dB Profile, it jumped up to 22111Kbps. That's over a 2 meg jump in speed which to some would make the difference. That would be a fifth more sync speed for mshaw43488 if it increased by 2 Meg.
Looking at mshaw43488's connection, I think I'd have to agree with you on the errors bit.
The number of errors (FEC) which his connection has suffered in 17 minutes is about the maximum of what I'd tolerate on my connection if it had interleaving enabled.
Mshaw43488, What I would suggest is to leave your connection synced for about 10 days and post back your stats after that so we can see how many errors have occured in a 10 day period.
Obviously the 3dB profile is your choice but depending on the errors in that 10 day period would depend on whether it is recommended or not as a 3dB profile can really cause your connection to suffer in reliability and performance if it can't handle it.
Only reason I recommend this is because sometimes a bulk load of errors can occur when the modem initially syncs which *may* be what has been recorded.
Also the DLM has you on Interleaving judging by the FEC errors which may be another reason not to lower the SNR.

  • HP 8630 print from USB connection and wirelessly

I have my HP 8630 set up with a USB connection to my PC.  How do I also set it up to print wirelessly from my laptop or IPAD while still retaining my USB connection?  Is that even possible to have two different methods for printing?

    Hi,
You may keep both USB and network conenction with no issues.
From the printer front panel click the Setup icon and then click on network and follow the Wireless Setup Wizard to connect the printer to your router.
Once you are done the printer should now be accessible on the network and can be used on the iPad.
On your PC open teh HP Officejet Pro 8630 software and open the Utilities tab.
Click one Printer Setup & Software and select Connect a new printer.
Follow the steps by selecting Wireless connection, at the end you should find two print queues of the pritner, one include Network in its name and then other one doesn't.
Please let me know if you may experience any problem,

  • How do I block a computer from accessing connection via wireless router?

This is my first linksys router.  My previous one had an option that i could choose to block a specific computer from accessing my wireless connection.  I cannot find an option like that with my linksys router.  I have to leave the connection open becuase of issues with other computers in the household not being able to connect with security being used.  Thanks!

what is the model number of your router?
if the wireless security wont work try to use the mac filter.you have to get the mac address of your computers in the house and you have to input it in the mac filter window on the set up page of your router.

  • Dropped commands via ethernet connection

    Hello,
I seem to have commands dropped whenever I use ethernet connections as opposed to GPIB or RS232. I do not know if it is due to timing but depending on the instrument the more frequent the dropped commands occur. If I highlight the execution, I see the data flow as expected and commands. I have tried placing timeouts before and after/delays in between commands, even *OPC, to make sure the operation is complete before moving on to the next command.
This question is very general for very specific pieces of instruments but I am convinced it is due to the ethernet connection and my understanding of the timing of commands.
    Thanks,
    Christian

Some instruments just need time to process commands before they can accept any more.  The Ethernet tends to send data faster, but also has a higher latency.  You could be running into this latency issue.  In general, you should have waits between commands just for allowing the instrument to process it, regardless of the communication bus.
