E3200 - Intermittent wireless connection

Keeps on dropping my signal. So I call Linksys. They tell me this is an older model and to buy the newer, more expensive E4200 model. I ordered the E4200, so we'll see if it works better.

Well, if you still have the E3200, did you try changing the channels on the device? One of the common reasons for connection dropping on any wireless device is interference. And one way to allay interference is to change the channels. If you don’t know how to do that, you can check it out here.

Pros: Gig Eth switch, no front-facing indicator lights, familiar web interface...
Cons: WiFi Protected Setup doesn't belong. Continually drops wireless connections to my Mac Book Pro (but none of my other devices), which worked just fine on the E3000 this unit replaced and works perfectly on other WiFi networks. REALLY SLOW web interface - average time to move from one page to the next is something north of 9 seconds. Again, never a problem with the E3000 that this unit replaced. Price? I wouldn't complain about price if this thing actually worked as expected.
Other Thoughts: I'm hoping it's just a flaky/defective unit and not indicative of the overall quality of newer Linksys products. Firmware isn't the issue - it's running the latest one from Linksys' site.

First of all please verify that you have got a 802.11n card in your computer. New generation routers (i.e. E3200) speaks an entirely different language with 802.11g cards, so while those adapters can work with the E3200, but they are not optimized to provide good performance. It is like having to translate from one language to another in real time when going from N to G.
Well, there are few things you should keep in mind with regards to N routers:
    1) For the best possible speeds, you need to be using WPA2-AES as your security mode. Any other security mode will see your speed/range capped.
Any G devices in your wireless network will tend to hamper the performance of your overall network.
Ensure that your router is running the latest firmware from homesupport.cisco.com The new firmware includes performance enhancements and fixes.
The router by default uses a channel setting of auto, which means that it would keep switching channels depending on the interference. I’d recommend you set it to a fixed channel. Usually, 1, 3, 6 and 9 give you the best performance depending on your environment of course. I’d suggest you try different channels, observing each for a while, to see which gives you the best performance. You can follow the link here on how to change channels.

  • Intermittent Wireless Connection, Dropping Wireless Connection

I am asking this in hopes of finding at least some way to diagnose my problem and hopefully eventually solving it. My wireless connection currently drops at varying amounts of time. Sometimes I can go 20mins others merely 5mins. The Airport reads that I am still connected and have a strong connection but when I try to navigate to a page with the browser (either firefox or safari) it merely times out after trying to load the page for up to a few minutes. I have changed the channel and frequency of my router (first router I tried was a Trendnet TEW-432BRP) and I have no cordless phones or other possible wireless obstructions. (I do have a very very infrequently used microwave but being that it's on the other side of the house and I can be sitting next to the router I doubt this is the culprit)
Then I tried changing routers to a Belkin N1 Vision router. Same issues. Additionaly worth noting all other PC's and linux machines on my network (about 4-5 other computers) all work just fine with out dropping their connections (with both routers).
Then I brought my original machine (a white macbook less than a year old) into the apple store, thinking at this point it was a hardware problem with my machine. They the replaced the airport card twice and the logicboard once. Eventually decideing that they should just replace the whole machine. Now with my new unibody I thought I had finally illeviated the problem but now I am having the same issues with an intermittent connection again.
If I turn off the Airport card and turn it back on again usually it will reconnect and allow me to browse again. But not always. The odd part is that generally when using another program that accesses the net the connection does not seem to be interrupted (such as with bit torrent). Very odd.
Anyway I tried using my computer at a friends house with the same trendnet router (his router but same model) and still the connection issues persist. Any ideas on what I can do or try to at least even begin to understand why this is happening would be helpful. I want very much to get to the bottom of this. Thanks for your help.

You didn't get the Apple Store to replace a white MacBook with a unibody?!
Anyhow - the connection problems could easily relate to an incompatibility between OS X and the router in question. Or it could simply be a setting on the router that isn't working well. To assist in the diagnosis... can you please supply:
    1) The security mode of the router? (WEP or WPA/WPA2 and AES or TKIP).
    2) The network mode (G/N)?
    3) The signal strength as reported by Airport (RSSI)
You can get most of this information (all except the security mode) by holding the option key down whilst clicking on the Airport icon in Finder. For the security setting you can go to your routers configuration screen (or you can get it from the command line).
    Cheers,
    Rodney

  • Wrt120n Intermittent Wireless Connection For Specific Apple Devices

    Hello,
I recently upgraded my Linksys wrt120n router firmware & had to reconfigure settings.  Subsequently, some (but not all) of my apple devices are having intermittent wirelesss connection problems.  Specifically, my ipad1 & ipad2 never lose thier connection but a macbook pro (~ 2 years old), iphone 3g, iphone 4, older ipod touch & very old ibook g4 all work for a period of time (usually 1/2 day) & then lose thier connection.  When I attempt to reconnect these devices I receive the following error..."unable to join the network xxxxxx....".  I also have a Dell laptop (1 1/2 yrs old) that generally does not have the connection problem.  Finally, when the devices do lose thier network connection all I have to do to reconnect is go to the Linkys router setup webpage & click on save & the wireless connection works again (almost like this is just refreshing the connection for these specific apple devices).  I was not having any problem prior to the firmware upgrade & from what I have read the older firmware version is no longer available so going back to the old firmware does not appear to be an option.  Any help is appreciated?

Let me know the name of the ISP? Let me know the ip address that you are getting from the router. To check the IP address that you are getting from the Router...
You can check the IP address in the following manner:
    # Click on Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Command Prompt.
    # A black pop up box should come up, type: "ipconfig /all" …
There check the IP address and Default Gateway under LAN….
    # Open up the browser on the desktop and on the address bar type “Address of the Default Gateway” that will open up the Router setup page…
    # On the same set up page reduce the MTU size to 1400 from Auto.
    # Then Click on wireless Tab select Channel Width to 20 MHz only and Channel to 6, 9, and 11. Click Save Settings.
Secondly avoid using any other wireless devices like cordless phones, microwave oven etc nearer to the router. Then check the wireless connectivity.

  • IPad 2 Intermittent Wireless Connection

I have a new iPad 2, 64 GB, Wireless and 3G.  I had a previous iPad that was the same model but had to be replaced.  I did not have this problem with the "old" iPad.
I lose my wireless connectivity.  It shows full strength, but the wheel turns constantly and the iPad will frequently fail to complete any form of speed test.  It might start the test, but then the speed will drop dramatically and the upload test might not run at all.
This happens at work (Comcast) and at three different home networks (all Verizon).  Unfortunately, I could not get the issue to repeat itself while in the Apple Store.
The problem is not the router.  At each location (but particularly at my house, work, and my fiancee's house), I could test my iPad against another iPad 2's performance.  In each case, only my iPad was suffering the intermittent connectivity issue.
I do not believe that the iPad is defective.  In fact, I am on my third iPad 2 since the Apple Store simply gave me a second replacement when I took the iPad in to ask about this issue.
Does anyone have any tips?  The IT guys at work are on this issue, but they couldn't figure it out.  The Apple Store geniuses were skeptical I was even having the problem, even though I could show them speed test results and emails from my work talking about how my iPad was performing differently than an identical model on the same wireless network.

This was with the iPad 2. There was not really a happy medium we could reach with the router location, because it would have meant sacrificing coverage downstairs if we were to move the router upstairs. Besides, who really wants a router in their bedroom. The WNR2000 is a relatively cheap router and not dual band, so not sure how much of a factor that is in the improved performance. My estimation was not necessarily that the reassuringly expensive Airport Extreme is the best router on the market. Rather my justification is thinking of the number of hours Apple spends testing wi-fi interoperability on the iPad 2, I would hazard a guess that the majority of this testing would focus on the Apple Airport products.
As an insurance policy, I also purchased an Airport Express which I would have used if the need arose to extend the network upstairs. Thanfully this was not the case and I will be taking the Airport Express back to the Apple Store this evening.

  • Intermittent Wireless Connection - Satellite A200-1VO

I can get wireless broadband connection, but then the connection is lost & then comes back on again sometimes several times a minute.
The broadband connection is OK using an Ethernet cable direct, but the wireless connection is intermittent even though the signal from the hub is strong.
    Can anyone suggest what's wrong?

As far as I know such issues were solved in the past with latest BIOS update and newest WLAN driver installation.
Have you already tried to do this?
By the way, this Satellite A200 is pretty old and I am wondering you have noticed this issue now.
Have you noticed similar issues in the past?

  • Slow/intermittent wireless connection

first of all i want to say that my ethernet connection is great, speed is fine and have not had a drop off in months, but recently my wireless connection has been strange, even if the signal speed is "excellent" i cant do anything, the connection has not dropped the speed is just not there
sometimes the speed comes back briefly for about 1 minute but then returns to a unseable state, again, this only effects my wireless connection
    can anyone help please?

  • Mac mini intermittent wireless connection to a DI-524 wireless router

My friend just got his first Mac, it is a 2.0 Core 2 Duo with Nvidia graphics and 1 GB ram. We have ahd lots of problems but the most troubling is the wireless connection, it connects to a DLink DI-524 router, it connects with full bars, some times it self assigns IP address, other times it connects gets and IP, connects to the internet and then stops working a few minutes latter. The bars for signal are all ways full regardless of problems, any help would be appreciated .
For information both of our iPhones and his laptop have no problems connecting, and staying connected.

problem seems to be with the WPA2 implementation, switch off WPA2 to nothing works no problem, moved it to WPA seems to be ok.

  • Pureview 808 Intermittent wireless connection and ...

I noticed when I connect to my home network or office wireless for downloading of map, the wireless connection will disconnect itself after sometimes. I don't think it is normal. Anyone has got this experience ?
In addition, while I am able to start the joikuspot services for internet sharing or tethering, the wireless network is not searchable by my other devices such as tablet and lumia 900. I thought the network might be hidden but it is not.
    Anyone got any advice ?
    Thanks

    Hi all,
I know a lot of people have got JoikuSpot working, and a few haven't. For those that cannot get it working, I would say it's just a matter of the settings, so let's see if we can work together to fix that
The following steps might not complete, I will let the community help me with that. But at least it's a start..
So, I have a Nokia 808 PureView (with firmware 112.020.0309).
    Steps:
    1) I have a mobile subscription that allows me to use a flatrate data subscription.
    2) I checked my phone knows how to connect to the data subscription by checking: Settings > Connectivity > Settings > Network destinations > Internet. On my device I can see I have "Elisa Internet" as my operator is Elisa Finland.
    3) I ensure "Mobile data" is enabled by swiping down the status panel on any homescreen, and ensure the "Mobile data" icon is lit.
    4) I ensure Wi-Fi is enabled by swiping down the status panel on any homescreen, and ensure the "Wi-Fi" icon is lit.
    5) I ensure my device is not already using any Wi-Fi network by swiping down the status panel on any homescreen, and ensuring the text under "Wi-Fi" says "Not connected".
    6) I launch the JoikuSpot application from the menu.
    7) I am asked "Allow sharing your internet connection with external devices?" .. I select "Yes".
    8) I am asked to select the Access Point. As I am having an Elisa Finland subscription, I am asked to select one of the following:
        Elisa Internet
        Elisa WAP GPRS
        Elisa MMS
    9) I see "Starting JoikuSpot access point".... with an option to press the cancel button (don't press it).
    10) About 15 seconds later I see is the application running, with options to "Stop", "Buy Full Version", and I see the SSID network name that JoikuSpot has created as an Ad-Hoc network, in my case "Nokia_808_PureVi_JoikuSpot_F06B". I can also see the same network with my laptop.
**What I have discovered doesn't work**
I have discovered that IF I am associated to a Wi-Fi network, i.e. at step (5) it says something else than "Not connected", then between steps 7-8 I am asked "WLAN already active. Allow application to replace the existing connection?" where I would select "Yes". This for me doesn't work though. I would suggest you check at step (5) that you are not already connected to a Wi-Fi network before launching JoikuSpot.
Let me know if this helps. If you are still having problems I believe there are many that have got joikuSpot working, and I would say please say at which stage it doesn't work for you.
    thanks, Craig

  • Encountering Intermittent Wireless Connections Using a Router

NOTE: Before following the steps in this article, check if your wireless computers have stable connection when connected to other wireless networks (hotspots).

  • WRT160n v3 intermittent wireless connections

My router is about 3 weeks old and from the beginning I have been having intermittent connection problems with my also 3 week old MacBook Pro.
I will turn the computer on and it will not automatically connect to my network, when it is in the list.  I will click on my network, enter my password and it will tell me that the connection has timed out.  Sometimes my network will not even show up in the list.  Other times I have no problem what so ever.
i have read on here a few times about updated the firmware of the router, then resetting and reconfiguring the router.  I would like to try this but I don't understand what it means to reset and reconfigure the router.   I don't understand a lot of tech jargon, so please use small words for me!
    Thank you!

Re-configuration means you need to setup your router from the scratch. When you press the reset button on your Router, your Router is back to factory defaults, So you need to input all the settings on your router again.
The settings which sabertooth has mentioned its only for Windows Operating System, Not for MAC.
As you have already resetted your Router, and you need to configure all the settings on your router back again... If you are running the Router setup disk on your Computer, you can exit from the setup and do all the settings on your Router Manually.

  • E1200 - Intermittent wireless connection

Bought when old Linksys 'g' unit died. Thought would be great opportunity to move up to "N" router for gamer user upstairs. Everyone speaks so well of Linksys it must just be me. Gamer complained this new connection was terribly slow and subject to constant dropouts. Spent HOURS with tech support (they are quite helpful, at least they sincerely try) but in the end was told "it's likely something bad with the firmware". WHAT? It's brand new. "Perhaps a complete re-install would help?". How about I take this back and try someone else !

When you say the connection for the gamer was slow, was it the internet speed or gaming speed that he was complaining about? If it was just the gaming speed, it could just be a matter of ports that may need to be opened.

  • E4200 v2 - Dropping wireless connection

I purchased this router as an upgrade from my Cisco/Linksys E3000 that I have had for over a year. I use wireless almost exclusively in my household and when the E4200 V2 is working it is great but then it seems to slow down. Actually it is not slowing down but dropping packets on the wireless segments after varying periods of time. The wireless connection does not drop ( i used vistumbler to view the connection in real time ) but all connections exhibit dropped packets. I had Amazon send me a replacement and it did the exact same thing. I even restored the router to default and setup just the wireless connection both using the Cisco connect and the web interface and the problem still happens. To test this I set a constant ping of the router's gateway address on my WLAN and observed 25% to 40% dropped packets. After a reboot it is more stable, but it becomes more unstable over time. The wired connections are solid and did not drop any packets but wireless is a joke!

There are many reasons why you experience poor signal or connection. Your intermittent wireless connection has a relation to the kind of setup that you have in your home or office. Is the connection dropping on all wireless computers or just one?
You have mentioned, you set the router to factory defaults and re-configured it. Did you try changing the channel on the router to either 1, 6, 9 or 11? There could be an interference with other wireless devices in the network (cordless phone, microwave etc.) since they work on the same frequency.
Try this and see if that helps.

  • IBook losing wireless connection intermittently

System is an iBook Dual USB that was purchased new a few years ago along with the original Airport card.
Just yesterday, the machine started intermittently losing connection to my access point (a belkin model) which had caused no problems for over a year.
Symptom is that all the "bars" go grey within a couple of minutes of boot, then sometimes come back to all black. But then again, sometimes it never comes back. In the Networks panel in System prefs, it shows airport as on, but not connected to a network.
The only other notable event, was that I loaded the two security updates for 2007 yesterday before the trouble started.
Removed and reseated the airport card a couple of times. Apple Hardware diagnostics show no problems even when run looping for over an hour. Ran disk utility to fix all permissions.
Per some webpostings, it was suggested that some system updates can mess up some .plist files related to networking -- Have deleted those, and still suffering from the same problem.
Other computers in the household have no problems connecting to the wireless access point, so the problem is localized to the iBook.
How do I know if I have a hardware problem (bad card), or some software corruption that is mimicing a hardware problem ?
    Thanks,
