E3200 - Internet connection speed problem

We can't believe your E3200 Router didn't last a year and can't handle the Charter 100 MBPS. Epic fail at the price.

Did you do any tweaking on the routers MTU?
Yesterday is history. Tomorrow is mystery. Today is a gift.

  • Slow Internet Connection Speeds caused by Ethernet Controller Driver

Problem:  Internet connection speeds are 1/10 of available connection speed.
    1. Problem statement is based on running speed tests at cnet, speedtest.net, and AT&T.
    2. I am paying for 12 MBps down load speed but I only get about 1.5 MBps.
    3. Other computers in household get 11+ MBps connected to the same ethernet cable and also different ethernet cables.
    4. I traced the problem to the network controller driver.
    5. I updated to the latest driver with no change in performance.
    6. After some experimenting I found that if I re-install the driver after the computer is booted up, the internet connection down load speeds increase to 11+ MBpS (typically around 11.4 with maximum capability of 12)
I have assumed that the driver does not load properly the first time, but why?  Or is there some other cause or setting that I have overlooked?

  • Internet upload speed problems with 10.6.8?, internet upload speed problems with 10.6.8?

Since upgrading to Snow Leopard in November 2013, internet connection speed has been slow.  Using ATT DSL at advertised speeds of 3.0 M download and 0.3 M upload.  Download is acceptable at 2.55 M average using Speedtest.net.  Upload is very slow at 0-0.1.  ATT has checked everthing and says its ok.  They gave me updated Netgear 7550 modem that didn't make a difference but is more modern that my original 2-Wire 1000.  They checked inside and outside lines.  They run a test of my modem and get 0.5 M upload, yet using my iMac and Speedtest.net, I get much less which is consistent with online experience.  Pages are slow to start download, and sending photos with email is very slow.  Could my iMac with 10.6.8 be the problem?

    OK, two things to try:
Do you have Javascript activated (not Java)?
Is your version of Flash Player up to date?
You can check here:  http://www.adobe.com/products/flash/about/  to see which version you should install for your Mac and OS.  Version 11.4.402.265 is for Snow Leopard onwards.
You should first uninstall any previous version of Flash Player, using the uninstaller from here (make sure you use the correct one!):
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/909/cpsid_90906.html
and also that you follow the instructions closely, such as closing ALL applications first before installing. You must also carry out a permission repair after installing anything from Adobe.

  • Very strange internet connection speed issue,

    Good Evening all.
I have a strange issue.   I got hooked up with a new ISP a few weeks ago and since that time I have had very slow PC connection speeds.   I have done speed tests,  and I get between 16 and 17mbps down,  but the PC runs and acts like I am getting 4 to 5mbps.  I have a Compaq Presario running Windows Vista Home Premium.  Service Pack 2.  There is 3 gig of ram and a 3ghz processor, with a 32 bit OS.
Here is how the setup looks.   The netgear modem is plugged into a regular phone jack and then goes through a router and then it is hardwired to the PC.  If I wire the PC direcly to the modem instead of going through the router,  I get the same mbps no matter what.  Between 16 and 17.
The wierd thing is that I can watch a movie on Netflix through my Wii with no issues.    This is strange to me because I would figure there to be more issues with wireless connections rather than wired connections.
I have a netgear modem and a netgear router.
I am almost wondering if my PC is not processing the incoming speed correctly.   I don't know if this is correct,  because I used to have Xfinity internet before this new internet and had absolutely no problems.  BTW my new ISP is called Edge Networks.  The boast speeds up to 30mbps.  I know that 16 to 17 is pretty good,  I just do not know why It seems like I am not getting anywhere near that.
While on the subject,  I also have another PC that I have gotten a USB adapter and am using wireless to access the internet.   This PC gets 5 to 6mbps down.   It is a Compaq running Windows 7 Home Premium Service Pack 1.  It has 3 gig ram and a 64 bit OS  with a 2.3ghz processor.
I do not have a clue why I have such slow inernet page loading speeds,  other than the possibility that my PC's are just severly outdated.
Can anyone help explain this issue?

    Evadfa, welcome to the forum.
I suggest contacting your ISP for help with the problem.  They should be able to help you since they know their product better than anyone.  I don't believe that it is a computer problem, since it is happening on two separate computers.

  • AirPort Express (2nd) Internet Connection Speed

    Dear All
    First of all, I looked everywhere on the internet about this issue I’m having and couldn’t find any solution. To explain my issue let me tell you how and why I use AirPort Express shortly;
    My Purpose
I have a wireless network and all my PCs are connected in one network. I have a Windows server and using it for general purposes and also as a file server. But if someone joins my network, they all are able to see my shared folders. They are able to read/write files (even delete them).
So I decided to create 2 networks with AirPort Express (2nd Generation). I have a wireless network for internal use only (for me and my PCs) and one Guest network.
Everything seems okay and there is nothing wrong.
How I Installed AirPort Express (APE)
I connected APE to my router (standard US Robotics DSL router) and my switch to APE. I used AirPort Utility on a Windows 8 PC and configured APE settings.
Base Station status seems normal (have a green light as well) and works okay. I can use my internal network, my PCs are communication with each other (they are all on the same switch). Guest network also works okay and seems like there is nothing wrong.
My router uses 192.168.2.xx IP range and APE is using its own 10.0.1.xx IP range. This makes APE to add an issue to Issues list as Double NAT.
    What is Wrong?
I have internet connection and I can browse web pages and do that kind of things. But my internet connection is really slow and some times cannot display web pages. I have to refresh some pages a few times to display it. My ping increased 5-6 times over than normal.
I thought the problem is the PC that I’m using but then realized that every PC has the same issue. I made a speed test and it showed 352ms ping to the nearest server to me which is really a high value.
My connection is unstable. It’s not dropping but speed suffers. Here is a test result. In this test my ping was 31 ms but as you see speeds are suffering. My connection is supposed to be 8mbps (Down) and 1mbps (Up).
What should I do to fix it? What is the point I’m missing? Could you please help me? Please let me know if you require further information.
    Thank you very much.
    Best Regards

    Dear All;
I just disabled DHCP Server from my router and now it seems to be better. But I don't know if it's something that I shouldn't do or not. Have any ideas?
This is the new result after disabling DHCP from my US Robotics router. There are still some minor issues (latency, slow downs etc.) but now seems to be better than before.
PS: I still have that "Double NAT" notification under Issues section.

  • Virtual switch internet connection sharing problem

    Greetings,
I am having a problem with sharing internet connection to virtual machine. I tried to create external virtual switch but without success. From time to time I got an error:
Error applying Virtual Switch Properties changes
An internal error occurred while processing the results of creating a new virtual switch. To refresh the results, close and then reopen this window.
but mostly the creation goes fine but after new virtual network device is created I can no longer access internet from Windows 8.1 nor VM as authentication fails (802.1x Secure W2 EAP-TTLS with certificate, username and password). The new device created
by virtual switch manager has authentication changed to Windows Protected EAP(PEAP) instead of original Secure W2 - even if I change it to original Secure W2 nothing happens - authentication still fails.
Sometimes when I try to change authentication settings of new or old NIC I got an error:
The changes to Authentication settings could not be saved
The virtual switch seems to have the same authentication settings as I have had on my NIC but from some reason it doesn't work.
If I am persistent enough I convince to install virtual switch by several attempts but it doesn't work - neither my server (windows 8.1) nor VM can connect to internet.
I hope it is not this:
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windows/en-US/341cbe70-3fa7-4991-a7e4-4f1af63df4d0/windows-8-hyperv-8021x-eapol-request-missing?forum=w8itpronetworking
unsolved problem. If it is I am screwed :-/
Any advice how to fix this mess much appreciated...

1.Go to network connection, and find the Wireless network, right click at it.
I am connected by wire (RJ-45) not by WIFI. The cerificate is valid (trusted root certificate used by Secure W2 authentization - not the authentication type you have described).
The problem is in creation of external virtual switch - removed it also with the driver from device manager I installed (and removed) subsequently both motherboard manufacturer latest drivers for my integrated network card and also let windows detect it.
Finally I removed Hyper-V and did a clean installation of network adapter drivers. Then I enabled again Hyper-V role.
After several restarts I tried to create external switch and I was again in the same problems. Then I redid everything and tried to install virtual switch again but
I installed INTERNAL virtual switch instead of external.
External simply doesn't work for me and also destroys functional connections...
To be able to access internet from virtual machine a tried to create a bridge between the connections but then it simply didn't work again (neither could I access internet from host on which was Hyper-V running).
So what has after several trial and errors worked for me eventually - if you would like to have internet connection functional in Hyper-V VM you have to
create INTERNAL VIRTUAL SWITCH and share the original connection and it should then somehow work...

  • WRT350N Connection/Speed Problem

    All,
Just picked up one of these but I think it needs some tweaking.  Occasionally B devices will lose connectivity.  Within a few seconds, link is reestablished.  This happens for all B devices ... although not at the same time.  Today when down downloading a large file, the download speed starts out good but then over time drops to 1-2 kbps.  This happens on both wireless and wired connections.
I've tried different combinations of channels but no improvement.
    Thoughts?
    Brian

If the connection speed drops on both the wired and wireless connection then check the internet setup on this router. Make sure you have a Public IP and DNS under status. Reduce the MTU (up to 1365) on this router. About the wireless connection dropping, Make sure you have selected Wide (40 MHz) Radio Band and wide channel is set to 9 and standard to 11. In this way your router will work in all the three modes (b, g and n). Reduce the beacon interval to 50 and RTS and Fragmentation Thresholds by 40 each if required.

  • Internet connection password problem

I've just installed OSX 10.3. Everytime I click internet connect it refuses. When I open the item, I see it has changed my password (I can tell this because there are more letters and numbers than there should be). When I type in my correct password it works OK. I save my correct password every time but it still changes it each time I re-use it. Anyone know what is going on? I've checked all the passwords in keychain and they are all OK.

The password field in Internet connect (and other places) shows a default number of '*' regardless of the length of your password. Therefore the number of '*' displayed will probably not match the number of characters in the password that you have defined.

  • Reader Preferences-Internet-Connection Speed: What does this do?

Can someone explain what exactly this setting controls or manages? When I search I see different mentions of what this setting controls, from only controlling multimedia to controlling how fast the .pdf actually opens.
The latter makes no sense; why would you throttle how fast a .pdf opens via this setting? At least managing multimedia makes sense, as that could control the quality of the media being downloaded. Faster speed = bigger better video file, etc.
Regardless, I have a request to make a Group Policy change for thousands of users to set this from the default of 56K to LAN, and I want to understand what this setting actually manages, and what the ramifications of making this change are for all users.
What happens if I set it to LAN for all users then someone is in a remote region of the world and only working on dial-up? It does still happen!
    Using Reader 11 on IE8 and IE9 on Windows 7 64 bit.
    Thanks!

It controls the enabling or disabling of certain "caching" for large PDFs or those that contain multimedia, which load slower on dial up connections. It has NO BEARING WHATSOEVER on opening local PDFs.
Regardless, I have a request to make a Group Policy change for thousands of users to set this from the default of 56K to LAN, and I want to understand what this setting actually manages, and what the ramifications of making this change are for all users.
That would all depend on what the ACTUAL connection is for those users. IF they're all on a LAN, then it would be OK to set LAN as the default in deployment.
What happens if I set it to LAN for all users then someone is in a remote region of the world and only working on dial-up? It does still happen!
Then the end user would need to go in and reset it to "Dial up".
FWIW - The reason it's set to Dial up by default is that ANY connection speed faster than 56k will still work with this setting. The reverse isn't so. If someone has their connection set to LAN and they're on dialup, a large ddocument will take forever to load in a browser window, because things like preloading images and media are enabled and not cached under the LAN setting, and with dialup, the PDF will need to load all that content AS IT DOWNLOADS, likely leading to a browser "lockup".

  • Connection speed problem with airport extreme

Hi, I´m using airport extreme and two airport express elements for best possible WLAN. It worked for a while, but from one day to another the connection speed from my apple device I wanted to connect became unrealisticcally slow. I have a 100 mb connection and the device, which are very close to the airports get below1 mb connection which make my work nearly impossible.
What is your idea, can you please help me ?
    regards, jky

    Hi-
    On the slow machine...
Go into SystemPreferences>Network...look in on the settings.
If there are IP addresses listed under "DNS Server", remove them.
    Apply, Save...
    Test again.
    Things better? Good.
    No better?
Put the IP address of your ExtremeAirport (usually 10.1.0.1, but check it).
If in doubt? Restart (power cycle) all your network devices, including the computers.

  • Internet Connection Speed SLOW!

    My Set-up...
2012 MacPro 3.33 GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon running Mavericks 10.9.5
    Airport Extreme Base Station -  Card Type: AirPort Extreme  (0x14E4, 0x8E) - Supported PHY Modes: 802.11 a/b/g/n - Firmware Version: Broadcom BCM43xx 1.0 (5.106.98.100.22)
    Modem - NEW Arris DOCSIS 3 CM820
Suddenlink High-Spped Cable (up to 50Mbps advertised in my area)
MackBook Pro 17" 2011 Model running Yosemite 10.10.2
Here is my problem. Last week Suddenlink increased the minimum bandwidth in my area to 50Mbps from 15Mmbps. They said I would need to upgrade to a DOCSIS 3 Modem to be able to take advantage of that speed increase however, so they sold me a new modem (Arris CM820) which I hooked up today.
I ran a Speed-Test at http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ both with my old Motorola Modem just before I disconnected it, then ran the test again after I upgraded the modem. I am connected to BOTH my PowerMac 2012 and my MacBook Pro 2011 via the SAME WiFi Network Base Station (Airport Extreme). My older MacBook Pro immediately showed a HUGH Speed Gain when running the speed-test, but the MacPro "download speed" actually went DOWN??? What could cause this?
    Mac Pro:
Before: 17.48 Mbps Download | 1.59 Mbps Upload
After: 3.32 Mbps Download | 5.37 Mpbs Upload
    MacBook Pro:
Before: 17.32 Mbps Download | 1.52 Mbps Upload
After: 49.36 Mbps Download | 5.58 Mbps Upload

As far as your configuration goes, I do not see anything strongly out of whack. You may want to set IPv6 to link-local only (both here and on your Macs) since it is not yet used for most Home Networks (but may be used by Bonjour Service Discovery). It seems unusual that your Airport Admin port (50.27.113.156) is set to a "real" Internet address, and not just a 10.0.xxx.yyy "strictly-local" Address, such as Manually  10.0.1.201 (just beyond the range you are using for your Macs). Do not set anything to 10.0.1.254 -- that is reserved for Broadcast your local network.
The way it is set now, I can ping that Admin address from across the Internet. It is showing about a 75 msec answer time at this writing, and no lost packets.
In the 2.4GHz band, there are at most three clear channels at higher speeds (where the channels were originally created for older 11Mbits/sec.) You are showing at least six other Routers in range. Using the 2.4GHz range means you are trying to shout over those other Networks. This will work for a while, but when they are active, you will slow way down.
Slowing down appears to be what is showing with your updated Option-WiFi screenshot. Your signal strength is still very good, but your Transmit rate had to be reduced from 130 to 104 due to inability to send without errors at highest speeds. You may still be getting errors, which would cause re-transmissions and slow your speed test results, but may not be so slow that the Transmit speed would downshift again (yet).
As an experiment, try running your Router at 5GHz n-mode only. Use it for a while that way. Maybe even run the speed Test. Then capture that Option-Wi-Fi data again and post it here. I would expect it to show a consistent higher speed (like 300), and not give you other problems. But if it cannot attain a higher speed, that may indicate a Hardware Problem.
I do not understand why your Mac does not move to the 5GHz band automatically.

  • Both firefox and seamonkey download at 1/10 internet connection speed on Vista 64 bit

Both Seamonkey and Firefox connect at 1/10 the available download speed on 64 bit Vista. Scanned computer for malware. Reset firefox. Both internet explorer and chrome show 32 Mbps on speedtest.net. Dowload speed only 3 Mbps on seamonkey and firefox, so configuration or code problem

That is an excellent suggestion. I will try it out when I can get access to the computer again. It would show whether it is a computer problem or a Firefox problem. One thing I have noticed between the XP computer and the Vista computer is that the Vista computer jumps way high in throughput to 100 Mbps then drops way low then way up again. The average is 35 Mpps when using Chrome or Internet Explorer, but it is very uneven. The XP computer goes up to 48 Mbps and stays steady. It seems like there is something in Firefox where it can't keep up so it drops way off. The Vista computer is a 6 gig RAM quad core, so you would think it would always be faster.

  • WRT160N Slow Internet Connect Speed, while connected wired.

Ive tried two of these routers both from best buy, I took the other one back thinking it was a problem with the router which it still maybe.  But, I have 20meg internet and when I run a speed test im only getting 6-7megs.  When I directly connect the modem to the computer I get the full speed with no problems.  I used to use the old BEFSR41 router and that always had max speed(Now the power light flashes on it, it goes steady then it starts blinking if anyone could help me with this one to would be great).  But I don't know what to do.
    Thanks.
    Justin.

Open the setup page of the router and reduce the MTU to 1350 and click on save settings..Power cycle the router and check...On the BEFSR41 as the power light keeps flashing..it seems that it gone bad...However you may try by resetting the router for 1 minute and if the power light stops blinking then, you can configure the router.
