E4200 - a "fail" in my book

Alright, in a nutshell, it sets up easily and as a router, it works pretty much as described. There were a couple of "ups and downs" the first day, but many fewer than I've had with previous Linksys routers. The interface will be very familiar to anyone who has owned a Linksys product in the last 10 years (that includes the good and the bad in that interface.)
It is certainly faster than the router built that AT&T foisted on me as part of their U-verse residential gateway, and it is also certainly faster than the WRT54G that the residential gateway replaced. However, I'm not sure that it's "blindingly faster"; that said, I have only those two G-band routers to compare it to. As an aside, it was really very easy to transfer "routing responsibilities" from the U-verse residential gateway to the E4200. There are good instructions available on the www, and following them closely, they worked the first time.
I get good reception anywhere in the house with this thing (5 bars anywhere I go on my property), though that was never an issue with any router I've every owned. Also, the furthest I can get from router and stay on my property is about 75 feet. I have not taken a device down the block to see how far the coverage goes.
I was not pleased with the fact that Linksys really seems to think that you should be broadcasting your SSID, and without even asking defaults that setting to broadcast the network name. This is a "Network Security 101" no-no. If you want to broadcast SSID on your guest network, knock yourselves out, but on your private network, no way; Linksys should really know better.
That however does not account for the three star rating I gave the E4200. That rating comes from a combination of bad customer service the part of Linksys and bad engineering/design in the "value added" features that they attempted to build into the E4200. Specifically:
* The Twonky media server. It's an emasculated version, don't even think about tweaking the configuration, you can't. I have experience with server based Twonky and thought this was really cool think to have on a router. It's not, it's just a gimmick that probably works well if you have media devices that don't require configuration tweaking (I've never met such a beast.)
* Linksys customer service was really useless on this issue. Eventually they did take my phone number and tell me that senior service engineer would call me back. That was a month ago and I haven't had call, an e-mail, or anything. They did however very successfully point fingers at Twonky, who in turn pointed fingers back at Linksys; you can probably tell where that's going...
* The USB port for network attached storage, again a nice idea, but something is really wrong with it. Having an external USB hard drive plugged into this port is great if all you plan on doing is reading files from the drive. If you plan on adding files to the drive while attached to the router or moving files around on the drive while it's attached to the router, forget it. Twice now these types of operations have resulted in "lost" files (data that the OS can no longer see, and therefore access.) In both cases I've been able to recover most of the lost files using a data recovery utility (which is a pain in the rear), though I did actually permanently loose two files the last time that even the recovery utility couldn't get back. For the record, my experiences have been with two different 1.5 TB drives that I've had for a while and used without issues simply plugged into the back of my computer. Neither drive had any history of misbehaving until it was plugged into the back of the E4200. So, if you want to use the USB port on the back of the E4200 as a simply file server that you unplug and hook up directly to a computer to add files to, it's probably worth it, but don't try and add files over the network or move things around on the drive while it's plugged into the E4200. I'd also make sure that you have backups of anything you put on such a drive somewhere else.
Those three issues are what made the E4200 just "OK". They don't detract from its usefulness or capability as a router, but they are at least part of what commands the premium price asked for the E4200, and they don't really work. Yes, they function in superficial ways, but "superficial" is still a "fail" in my book.

As far as SSID Broadcast option for your Main network is concerned, you can turn it OFF by logging onto http://192.168.1.1 - Wireless  - Manual - SSID Broadcast - Disabled - -Save Settings....
Coming onto the other end of your issues, i.e., connecting a USB HD to E4200's USB port, works well upto 2 TB if configured correctly, try and follow:

  • Error: "failed to load book because the requested resource is missing"

I book a book via the iPad. The book appeared in my library no problem with the "new" tag and stuff, but when I tap it to read I get an error "failed to load book because the requested resource is missing." Any ideas? I'm on the road, so I haven't synced or backed up or anything..
I've also verified that I have a good connection, etc. I'm able to hit the "store" button and browse the store no prob, as well as web, etc.
    Any thoughts?

I believe I may have the answer to these many concerns.
When a book is over 20 or so megs, iBook will sometimes make an attempt to download on the iPad (when it should not). This causes problems. Perhaps the one you are experiencing. Therefore you have to wait until you are on a wifi connection before purchasing dictionary-like books. But if you've already made the mistake of downloading, theres no guarantee wifi will correct this.
What worked for me (like others have already mentioned) is that if you have an iphone or touch you can download it from there, sync with your computer and sync your iPad later. The book(s) will transfer just fine as long as you have this enabled on your devices.
Initially this didn't work for me because in my frustration with a prior issue I took the liberty to create another iTunes account. Therefore iPad purchases were not visible on my phone. So be sure to have the same accounts activated on your devices and iTunes.
Yet even further diagnostics may need to be explored as I'm still prompted to provide my password every time i open iBooks (as if the download is still pending). Kinda afraid to revert to factory settings over a small issue. In the coming update Apple should fix these problems altogether. Hope this helps!

Swipe to the right from your home screen and do a search. See if the app shows up. If it does - tap on it just to make sure that it works.
You can swipe from screen to screen to look for it in order to find the icon. It may have ended up on a far off screen or in a folder somewhere on the iPad.

If you can't open a particular ibook then try deleting it from the bookshelf via the Edit button at the top right of the bookshelf, and (assuming that it's still in your country's store) redownload it via the Purchased tab in the ibookstore in the app (or if you have a copy of it on your computer's iTunes library sync it back from there).

  • TS1702 Previously purchased book on iBooks, previously read. Still visible on iBooks on the iPad. When I attempt to open the book now, I get the message: "Failed to load book because the requested resource is missing." Help.   Larry

On iBooks app on iPad: When trying to open a previously purchased and read book, I get the message "Failed to load book because the requested resource is missing."    How can I open the book again?      Larry107

Quit the iBooks app completely and restart the iPad. Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Double tap the home button and the task bar will appear with all of your recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner of the app that you want to close. Tap the home button or anywhere above the task bar. Restart the iPad.
Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logou appears and let go of the button.
Or try deleting the book and download it again. You can download it again for free as long as you use the same Apple ID.
If that doesn't work either, sometimes deleting the iBooks app and reinstalling it may work. But art with the first two suggestions.

  • HT3951 "Failed to load book because the requested resource is missing"

I get "Failed to load book because the requested resource is missing" after I purchased an ibook, downloaded it, and tried to open it, all done on my iphone.
Has anyone experienced this problem? How was it resolved?

In fact, iBooks is so slow and unresponsive on a 3G that I don't understand why Apple released it for that device. Books take up to 15 seconds to open. I did find a way to stop the "resource is missing" warning (written in Microsoft-ese, worryingly): I simply tried to open every other book until successful, then went back and opened the one that did not open in the first place. The warning seems related to bookmark sync, but I am only guessing about that.
iOS 4 clearly needs a bug fix in many areas: iBooks, Mail retrieval (which on some devices cycles forever), iTunes backup / restore (where many apps and preferences don't make it back into the phone), general speed and usability on the 3G, whose processor / RAM just can't handle the new software.

  • Ipad failed to load book because the requested resource is missing

ipad failed to load book because the requested resource is missing ? any ideas what to do ?

This happened to me also when I was away from home. To fix it you have to delete the iBooks app, turn off your iPad. When you are back home are at your original source where you downloaded iTunes (mine was my home computer) redownload iBooks on your iPad.  It will come back up with all your purchases, go to the book you want to read, tap it, and it will download on your iPad.  The key is you have to be back where you originally downloaded your iTunes.  Hope this works for you.

  • IBook "Fail to load book" HELP!

My iPhone 4S iBook app will not allow me to open any of my purchased books recently. It gives the error "Failed to load book because requested resource is missing." I noticed other users having that issue with their IPad and tried some of the solutions listed. I tried Deleting the app, deleting books (I can't get back now) signing out and resigning in, restarting my device, buying a new book and trying that, etc. Nothing has worked. I even switched to "Purchased books" both in the store (won't load) and in my library (blank). What do I do? I have soo many books on this device. Side note: This iPhone is my only Apple device, and I do not connect it to a computer or anything.

I have the same issue. I tried deleting and redownloading. That didn't work. I had to restart my iPad as well.
    delete book from iBook library
    close all apps
    restart iPad
    redownload
