E4200 Guest Network issues

Hey, I recently set up this router, and enabled the guest network, but it almost never takes me to the login page, and when it loads it takes an abnormally long time. Everything else works. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Did this ever get resolved? We have the e4200 1.0.03 &  two wireless devices (one laptop & one desktop) and the cisco page pops up asking for the password = connected. BUT, the other device (desktop) connects to the e4200 but the cisco login page never pops up? BTW The wirekess icon indicates that there is a good connection & signal strength... but not able to access internet :^(
BTWW Already done all the software up grades , turned the computer on and off, rebooted the router and all that. Oddly, this device had a wireless connection a few days ago & now the cisco window doesn't pop up asking for the password. What gives?
Thanks, Ben

  • Guest Network Issue

I want to thank all of you for your help. I finally have installed my AE software and all of our computers are up and running, two macs and one pc upstairs. I'm delighted. I did put in a password, but what I'm not sure of is the Guest Network Settings. Should I have checked the Guest Network which I did and it says WPA 2 Personal. I entered a guest network password. Does this mean that no one can use this but those who are on the network which would be my husband and myself? I don't want anyone else to access the wifi. I did enter a regular password at the beginning for the settings and of course a name for the AE.
I'd appreciate an answer to this because I'm concerned about privacy.
Also, I wanted to mention that with AE the connection seems faster than just with the modem. I'm just so delighted!

Bob, I just turned it off. Will my husband still be able to access AE? he was able to. I am able to on this computer. I have the software set up on my Intel machine this one is older. I've just plugged this one into the AE with an ethernet cable. All seems to work well, but I still don't understand the Guest Network issue. All I care about is that we can get on. I don't want anyone else to be able to access the connection. So, I turned off "enable guest network." Did I do the right thing? Thanks again!

  • Timecapsule Guest Network Issues

I just recently had my timecapsule (1TB) replaced at the apple store. I assume I got a reconditioned one. Went to set up new network as I had the initial one and when I enable the guest network I get a connection timeout error for the main network.
    I tried:
    Resetting the TC
    Changing radio channel
    checking the network robustness option
Nothing seems to work except for disabling the guest network, as i read older posts it seems i may have a bad unit? Any other thoughts?

That would be the most recent firmware version for your generation of the Time Capsule. I have the same, but can't duplicate the issue that you are seeing.
I do seem to recall that when I saw this issue before, that I restored the Time Capsule back to factory default settings and cleared out all the password information about the Time Capsule in KeyChain Access. I suspect that it might have been a password corruption issue in KeyChain Access.
If you want to try this, be sure to use a different password for the Guest network than the main network. That can cause issues if you are using the same password.

  • E4200 Guest Network Not Working

I cannot get the Guest Network feature to work.
Even though Guest SSID is enabled, it does not show up on any devices attempting to connect. Manually connecting by entering the Guest SSID fails (not recognized). On devices with the primary 5 and 2.4 GHz configured they do see the third network but without SSID (unknown) and are also unable to connect to it manually using the SSID.
    Here are my settings:
    Firmware: 1.0.02
E4200 is configured in Bridge mode (WAP).
    5 GHz Network
    Mode Mixed
    SSID Astro2-an
    Width Auto
    Channel Auto (DFS)
    SSID Broadcast Disabled
    2.4 GHz Network
    Mode Mixed
    SSID Astro2-bgn
    Width Auto
    Channel Auto
    SSID Broadcast Disabled
    Guest Access
    Allow yes
    Name Astro2-bgn-guest (cannot be changed)
    Guest Password testpassword
    Total Guests Allowed 5
    SSID Broadcast enabled
I did not try this before 1.0.02. Have rebooted modem and verified all configs (multiple times). The network is live in an office and can't keep screwing with it or drastically changing its settings.

I have now tried 3 of these routers and the problem as I see it is when you set the E4200 to bridege mode with a static IP then the client receives a .33.x address receive the E4200's default gateway and a .33.1 as the dns servers. I don't see how the clients could resolve dns with these 2 entries.
Alas, I have think I have now figured out why some people can connect using the E4200 in bridge mode as a guest and some cannot. It is my belief that Cisco needs to update the firmware to allow you to enter dns values on the staic page because if you set the E4200 to obtain an IP address automatically then it receives good DNS info. You can verify my results by looking at the staus page in staic and dynamic mode.
I hope this helps people that are having problems.......
(Mod Note: Edited due to non-compliance of forum guidelines.)
Your findings are correct. However I don't see where adding a static DNS would work. What Cisco needs to do is provide the DNS of the connected gateway for internet access when in bridge mode for guest connections. Then restrict routing to just the gateway for internet access and no local routing.

  • Guest networking issues

On my old Airport Extreme I could not connect it down stream from my main router AND use guest networking, it had to be one or the other.
Has this been addresses in the 5th gen AE?

Im not wanting to extend my guest network.
My main router (a $1200 Cisco business VoIP VPN router) is 50 meters away from my house in a different building. I have a network cable run from this main router into my house and it's there, in my house, that I want wifi and guest access.
Ive had several other brand routers in my house, currently the E4200, and they all work fine down stream of the Cisco and with guest access, but I'd like to keep it all apple and use time control limits for my kids iPads etc but E4200 limits this to 5 devices.
It seems strange that apple is the only brand that can't do this?

  • Time Capsule Guest Network Issue!! Help

    Hi and tnxs for reading.
I have a TC in bridge mode to my router.
I have activated a main WiFi network and a Guest Network. Today I had a friend at home so I tried for the the first time the Guest Network. However, after 1 minute of trying attemps, he got a time out. I tried with my iphone, ipad and mac, but no results.
I tried to disable and enable again the Guest Network without pwd, but got the same issue.
I read around that Guest Network is not working in bridge mode but don't know if this is the same issue I have, since the network is working but the problem happens when trying to connect. I guess I should get a caution or warning if this is the case....... no worning or messages, but sadly discovered by chance...
    Any help?
    Cheers

I have a TC in bridge mode to my router.
The Guest Network will not function correctly unless the TC is configured to operate as a router, providing DHCP and NAT information for the network.
It is unfortunate that AirPort Utility 6.x versions display the Guest Network option when it is configured in Bridge Mode.....(previous versions of AirPort Utility 5.x would not even display a Guest Network option when the TC or AirPorts were configured in Bridge Mode.)

  • E4200: guest networking and MAC filter

    Hi there,
I have my e4200 setup with guest networking enabled and also MAC filtering. Somehow i was epxecting MAC filtering not to be applied to guest wireless network but it appears to be so.
Can anybody please confirm if this is the case and if there's a workaround?

You are correct.  MAC filtering is universal in the router. There is no workaround besides not using it.

  • E4200 Guest Network advanced settings?

    Hey guys.
i am interested to know if there is anywhere (even in the code) where i can play with the guest network settings?
    Stuff i really miss:

*. Ability to set a lease time for guest network
*. Ability to use special characters in the password (@!$%)
is it even possible or an open source firmware is the way to go?

    - AFAIK, no 3rd party firmware has been successful in enabling the guest network.

  • E4200 guest network access restrictions

I have the E4200 router with fw v1.0.01.
I need to provide guest access and limit the hours it is available.
I am not able to use access restrictions because when I attempt to enter the range of IP addresses it forces me to use 192.168.1 and the guest subnet is 192.168.33, therefore it never gets a match when the cutoff time comes. I do not know the MAC addresses of the guests and  cannot force them to use predefined static IP addresses, so the range of addresses seems to be my only option. It's just that it won't let me input the "33" where it is needed.
Perhaps I am misunderstanding something or perhaps there is some other way to accomplish this.
    Please advise.
    Thank you,
    -Marty

Thanks for the reply. I'm pretty sure you're right, at least it looks that way. That's a little too open for me. I suppose I could change the config when I want to cut off access, it would just be nice to have it automated.

  • E4200 Guest Network

Hello!  I just bought an E4200 and it's working well.  However, I notice that when I disable the SSID broadcast, I can still see it in the available routers menu.  Thank you for the help!

I've learned from forum seniors that turning off SSID broadcast is not recommended.
    Read this post.
    http://homecommunity.cisco.com/t5/Wireless-Routers/Router-WRT54G-does-not-connect-automatecally-to-m...
And as recommended by gv, The only way to secure a wireless network is to use WPA2 or WPA with a strong preshared-key.

  • Airport Guest Network - Connects but no internet

I'm using and Airport Extreme Base Station (A1354), software version 7.6.4. The secure networks are fine and work perfectly to serve up an internet connection.
However, the guest network (which is currently set to no password) connects just fine but no internet is provided. I've tried everything I can click on to get it to work but nada. I've rebooted, naturally, as well as removed the guest network and created new ones with new names and passwords as well as no password versions.
    Can anyone help?

The most common cause of Guest Network issues is trying to connect the AirPort Extreme to a modem/router or gateway type of device, when it needs to connect to a simple modem. A simple modem will always have only one Ethernet port.
Click on the Network tab and check the setting for Router Mode.  If it is set to "Off (Bridge Mode)" you have the AirPort connected to a modem/router or gateway type of device that is both a modem and router in the same package.
The Guest Network cannot operate correctly in the "Off (Bridge Mode)" setting......but at the same time this is the correct setting for your AirPort Extreme to work with your modem/router or gateway device.  Kind of a Catch 22.
If the Guest Network feature is important to you. ask your ISP if they can provide you with a simple modem.....not a modem/router or gateway.  Or, ask your ISP if it is possible to reconfigure the modem/router to act as a only a modem. If it is, the Guest Network feature will work correctly once the device has been setup to operate only as a modem.

  • I was able to create a guest network, However Devices will not log into it. Does this have anything to do with my uverse wireless modem

Help, I have created the guest network. However, no devices can log into it. Can someone help me with my Guest network issues?

Unfortunately, Apple assumes that you will be using a simple modem with their routers.  Something like this, for example, which will allow the Guest Network feature to work correctly, since the AirPort will be the main router on the network.
The Uverse is a modem/router, also known as a gateway......a device that combines the functions of a separate modem and separate router in one package. An example of a modem/router would look like this:
Because the Uverse is already operating as the main router for the network, the AirPort cannot take that role. So,  the Guest Network will not function correctly with the type of device that you have.....even if you try to enable it in AirPort Utility.
Suggest that you use the AirPort router as your main network, and use the Uverse wireless for "guests".
Sometimes, it is possible to reconfigure a modem/router to act as if it were a simple modem. I do not think that this is possible with a Uverse product, but you could check with ATT on that possibility if you wanted to do so.

  • Very Strange Network Issue With Two Guests on 2012 R2 Hyper-V Failover Cluster

Hi all.  We're having a odd issue with two guests on our 2012 R2 failover cluster.
In a nutshell, if we shutdown a particular server (I'll call it Server A) another totally different server (Server B) on the same node loses it's network connectivity to the domain. If we start server A back up, network connectivity returns on server B.
At first I thought server A might be running a service that was somehow linked to server B, so I decided to disable server A's NIC.  Interestingly, that had no affect on server B's connectivity.
The next step I tried was pausing server A and again, no adverse affect on server B's connectivity.
Next step was to live migrate server A to another node.  This action did
cause server B to lose its network connection.
One other clue is that if I ping server B from either of the Hyper-V hosts in the cluster, I never lose network connection to server B.
So I would suspect this is some network issue on the cluster, but I'm kind of at a loss where to go from here.
Has anyone seen this behavior before or does anyone have any troubleshooting suggestions I can try?
    Thanks!
    George Moore

    Hi Sir,
I'v never seen this before .
    >>Next step was to live migrate server A to another node.  This action did
cause server B to lose its network connection.
They are connecting to same virtual switch ?
First please run cluster validation to check if there is any error .
If it is ok , please try the following items for troubleshooting :
    1. shutdown  serverA   serverB
    2. then add another virtual NIC for serverB
    3. start server B  check if the issue happens to both "old" and "new" virtual NIC .
In addition , you can live migrate both A and B to another node , then try to live migrate A to the original node .
If the issue persists , I would suggest you to remove that virtual switch on both nodes then re-create them .
    Best Regards,
    Elton Ji

  • E4200 Change Guest Network Name

Is it possible to change the Guest Network Name on the E4200? And if so, is it possible to do so without having to do a complete reset of the router and without using the Cisco Connect software?

Yes you need to download and install the Cisco connect Software.  That is the only way to manage the Guest account for the router (unless things have changed).   Be aware the new SSID will still have the -guest tagged to it.
Linksys is the only vendor that does this.  Also the Guest account in NOT encrypted for security.  I would not use it in a public place at all.  This is for home use only.  All other manufacturers except Linksys, can use full WA2-AES for encrypted information on their Guest Networks.  You can also name your Guest SSID to anything you want.  Something to think about.

  • E4200 Wireless Guest Access issue

Hello, I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction. I have the wireless guest access set up in my E4200 flash to the latest firmware.
When I connect to the wireless guest network it comes up under the 192.168.33.xx IP address. I can connect fine but it never pops up the browser so that you can type in the guest password. I'm running Windows 7 but I've also noticed the exact same problem under XP.
The only thing I can guess is the problem is that I have this acting like an access point and all DHCP requests go to my router. I've basically turned off DHCP on this and plugged the network connection into the switch on the back.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks
    Josh

If I go to 192.168.33.1 it does pop up the browser but when I enter the password It just hangs. Not sure if it was connected or not. Is there no way to pop up the browser automatically?
