E4200 - Horrible Router

This is the worst router I've ever owned. I thought it was bad when my gaming dlink went bad after a year. I bought this router when it came out a few months ago and it has already went bad. I called up the technical service. The first two times I called I was hung up on after giving all my personal information. The third time I finally got somebody on the line. The only problem was he was extremely hard to understand. After listening to his technical expertise which included is your network cable plugged in and taking control of my computer to check all the basic functions that I had already checked before; he came up with a solution. The solution was to set my security to WEP. This disabled all wireless n usage which is what I bought this router for. Although I can connect to the internet now it doesn't serve it's advertised purpose of dual band wireless n. Something is obviously messed up inside the router and linksys is unwilling to help me. A band-aid on a fatal wound doesn't make it any less fatal.

As far as the wireless issue is concern for that I would like to inform that it broad cast the dual band network but it also depends upon the receiver i.e. the adapter has that capability or not .... If it has then it will surely let you connect to both 5GHz frequency network as well as 2.4 GHz frequency network but if  the adapter does not have that capability then it will only to 2.4GHz network....

  • Problems with Linux OpenVPN connection through E4200 v2 router

When I try to connect OpenVPN through an E4200 v2 router from my Linux Fedora 16 client, the connection hangs. The connection log show that OpenVPN has connected to the VPN server. Internet also freezes until I disconnect OpenVPN.
OpenVPN on Windows works fine through the E4200 router.
If I connect the Linux client directly to my Inteno fiber router, OpenVPN works fine.
Passthrough is enabled in the router, and I have configured QoS and port forwarding for port 1194. The router has firmware version 2.0.37.
Can anyone help me with this problem?

  • USB External Hard Drive Question for the E4200 v1 router

I know this is going to be a really dumb question, especially coming from a computer tech of 25 years, but I'm going to ask it just to be safe.
First off, my router is the E4200 v1.  It's a substitute for my older WRT54GS router.  One of the features I am quite fascinated with is the USB external drive usage.  Here's my question.  I have a Western Digital My Passport Essentials 500 GB external drive (Model #WDBAAA5000ABB-02) that I want to use on it.  I know it's not on the Official List of tested USB storage devices for the Linksys E4200 but I really want to use it, especially for storage on my three computer systems.  My question is do I need to unplug the router power supply BEFORE I plug in the external drive to the USB port on the back, or does it matter?
Any help is appreciated.  Again, I know it's a dumb question, but the guides and "How-To" on the Linksys website isn't exactly clear.  Thanks in advance!

Errr... Nevermind.  I think I found a better way to use the external drive without the use of the router.  Thanks anyway.

  • E4200 - Okay router, setup issues

I chose this router over the Netgear N750 because of previous bad experience with their customer support and over the Asus RT-N56U b/c of a compatibility issue with a specific application.
The Cisco Connect Software is very poor software. No OSX Lion support so I could not use my Mac for setup and it could not even detect the router on a wired connection on a Windows 7 PC through a simple Dell unmanaged switch. Even the router setup software built into Windows had no problem with that. I had to rely on manual setup which was straightforward.
Range was mostly adequate for me with both 2.4 and 5 Ghz over 5,000 sq. ft. of indoor space with no direct line of sight, through many walls, multiple floors, and the outside patio also, although with a few connected devices I found the 5 Ghz band somewhat unreliable at times. Wired gigabit performance was good enough for my purposes.
Overall a decent router, not bad, not great.

It seems like you are using an outdated version of Cisco Connect Software… There is a new release of the Cisco Connect Software that supports Mac OS X (10.7 "Lion")… So you need to download the latest Cisco Connect from the Cisco Website (homesupport.cisco.com) or you can use this link: http://homesupport.cisco.com/en-us/support/routers/E4200 ... After downloading you need  to set the router to factory defaults, power cycle the whole network and then run the Cisco Connect that you downloaded…

  • Why doesn't my E4200 wireless router show all attached devices when viewing the DHCP Client table?

I recently installed some wireless IP cameras and when attempting to re-install a camera I went into the DHCP Client table to verify which IP a camera was using to set it up, but I could not...and still cannot see any of my cameras in the table even though I can access three of them directly through the IE web browser. I initially power cycled both the E4200 router and Motorola cable modem, and then later just the wireless router...but I still do not see the devices connected. I currently have 2.0.37 firmware even though I was told by Cisco support that there was a later version available, just before being informed that I do not have support available and could purchase it. I attempted to locate a newer version, but the online upgrade portion of the Cisco Connect software searched the net and then states that I have the latest version available. I also opened a Firefox browser to see if maybe my browser was causing issues, but the same limited table appears without all entries available. I even opened the Cisco Connect software on another laptop with the same limited results.
Other than a factory reset, any suggestions to get me E4200 dual band wireless router to show all attached devices through the DHCP Client table as it previously did approximately two weeks ago? Thanks!

It is strongly recommended that you upgrade the firmware to a smart wifi, which may resolve lot of bugs. You can also download the firmware here:

  • How to user E4200 as router with WAG120N as a modem ONLY

I've both WAG120N and E4200, I want to use WAG120N as ONLY ADSL modem (no DHCP server or any other setting) and let the E4200 to the rest.
What option should I select in E4200 Internet connection type to make this?

The setup that you want may be possible but please add more info like who is your ISP and from what region. The reason for that is to identify as well if you can set the ADSL gateway to just a plain modem. It totally depends also on your ISP settings. In the meantime you can check this article from the Linksys KB site:

  • E4200 Wireless Router Rebooting

I experienced my router rebooting for 2 days in a row and my USB drive was installed. I flashed the firmware from 1.0.0.5 to the latest 1.0.0.6. Now all my data was lost and there were only a few original folders that came with the drive. I don't suspect it was hacked because the original folders were there but the ones I created were all gone. When I did a Hard Disk recovery, I noticed a lot of data was in an unkown format. Does anyone one know if the E42000 formats the drive using FAT table? I suspect my drive got corrupted thus losing all data. Now I keep my USB drive disconnected for fear that my router will be hacked. In terms of the rebooting, I was able to resolve the issue by upgrading the firmware to 1.0.0.6 (latest release for this router). Has anyone experience sudden reboots ?

At some point you may want to get into additonal backup. If your data is critical and you need to be safe and be assured, getting into NAS would be recommended. Even thought the USB drives will be good in short term, haveing a NAS would help in long term. You never know if something might happend to the USB drive. Don't keep you data all in one place. Also burn to DVD or CD as well.
    Good Luck.

  • External Harddrive to e4200 wireless router

I would like to connect my lacie 1tb external hard drive to the router and be able to access the hard drive from macbook wirelessly without the router being connected to anything else but the external hard drive, is this possible?

Just plug in the hard drive to the router via usb. Make sure your hard drive has power too. Then go to the router's config page and click create a share under the storage tab. The user manual has a more detailed description of this process.

  • Router cannot get a WAN IP address form ISP (e4200 v2)

    Hello,
I just bought the Cisco e4200 v2 router, I did all the installations as the Cisco connect software instructed me and everything went fine.
After the installation I configured the router on  the WAN settings as (Automatic Configuration - DHCP), like my old router (Linksys WRT54GL) and I saw that my router doesn't get the WAN address from cable modem from my ISP(it stays on 0.0.0.0), it doesn't renew the IP address.
So please how can I fix this issue? This is a bug in the e4200 v2 firmware?

EVERY time you change what is connected to a cable modem you MUST power cycle the modem.  If it's a telephony modem it has an internal battery so you have to push the reset button, usually with a paper clip, to reset it.
Cable modems memorize the MAC address of the first connection and block all subsequent MAC addresses.

Cisco Connect has been replaced now with a name Linksys Connect. I would suggest that you uninstall and reinstall the software. During the reinstallation of the software, it will normally let you enter the wireless name and password of the router to continue the setup.
By the way, where is the printer connected? Is it connected to the USB port of the router? What version of Linksys E4200 do you own? As far as I remember, if you have the E4200 v2 router, you can update its firmware to Linksys Smart Wifi. In that way, you no longer need the Linksys Connect software.

  • E4200/E3200 in bridge mode...Guest access works, but does not roam between routers...any ideas?

I have installed wireless in my church...main router is E4200 in the office set up as follows:
    IP: 192.168.0.1
    Subnet: 255.255.255.0
    DHCP enabled (Range = 192.168.0.4-192.168.0.103)
    Guest network enabled
    Static DNS (for content filtering)
    NAT: Enabled
Second router E3200 (in bridge mode) - connected LAN to WAN
    IP: 192.168.0.2
    Subnet: 255.255.255.0
    Guest Network enabled
    DHCP (obviously disabled)
    Static DNS (for content filtering)
    NAT: Enabled
Third router E3200 (in bridge mode) - Connected LAN to WAN
    IP 192.168.0.3
    Subnet: 255.255.255.0
    Guest network enabled
    DHCP (obviously disabled)
    Static DNS (for content filtering)
    NAT: Enabled
The 2 routers in Bridge mode are connected to a 16-port unmanaged switch (with other PCs, etc.), which is then plugged into the main router in Port 1.
SSIDs on all 3 routers are exactly the same for both main and Guest networks.
The main network works flawlessly.  The router in the office hands out IPs in the 192.168.0.XX range and you can wander throughout the church and maintain a persistent Internet connection.  File and print access works fine too from anywhere in the building.
For the Guest network, you can set up a laptop next to each router, obtain an IP address, reach the logon page and surf the Internet without issue.  So, the Guest Network works fine from each router.
However, if you wander around the church while on the Guest network (such as with a smart phone), the following happens:
-On either of the E3200 routers (in bridge mode) you get the login page as you wander into the range of each router.  I would have thought that if you logged in once, you would be good to go.
-You get a different IP from each router.  On the E3200's in Bridge mode, you get a 192.168.33.XX address.  Additionally, the gateway is 192.168.33.1.  On the E4200 (main router) you get a 192.168.3.XX IP and a gateway of 192.168.3.1.
-As a result of getting different IPs, the smart phone becomes confused and generally won't connect to the Internet.
So, it looks like each router maintains a separate list of who has entered the correct password to get onto the Guest network.  Additionally, it appears as if each of the 2 routers, supposedly in Bridge mode, is still handing out IP addresses on the Guest Network, rather than deferring to the router in the office like they do for the main network.
I have seen a lot of postings about how to put routers into Bridge mode and problems with the Guest Network, but posts that I've seen point to the Guest network not working at all, as opposed to this issue where it works; the bridged routers, though, continue to like to hand out IP addresses on it, making wandering around the church while connected to the Internet not possible while connected to the Guest network.
Anyone else experience as similar situation?  Any possible solutions out there?
    Thanks!
    -Gil
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I do understand what you were trying to do here since you would like to have only 2 SSIDs (main & guest) for perhaps easy connectivity. The reason why you were not having problems getting online wirelessly when you were connected to the main network it’s because the computer was connected to only one DHCP server since the 2 bridge routers were just acting as a switch or a passthrough device. Now with guest network access it is a different scenario, a guest network is a virtual network meaning to say it’s like your having another router embedded on your router. Since it is a virtual network, then it does not follow the parameters of the main network, hence even if the router was set to bridge mode those routers will still have their own ip address of either 192.168.33.1 or 192.168.3.1.

  • Streaming HDTV media through E4200 to TV

    Hi all.
Basically the problem is that the HD media steamed through the E4200 router has a significant lag on the TV. So details..
I have the Linksys E4200 wifi router and want to stream the HD video from my computer to TV.
The connection schema is pretty straightforward:
Computer with 10/100 mbit network adapter-----(network cable)-->E4200----(WIFI)----->TV with 802.11n WIFI adapter.
Also 10(ten) mbit Internet connection cable is plugged into WIFI router. The questions are:
    1) Can the 10 mbit internet connection affect the speed of the media content being streamed through the E4200 router?
    2) Does it make sense to buy the WIFI 802.11 n adapter and use it instead of the network adapter / cable in the connection schema mentioned above?
    3) What can be other possible reasons of the lag?
    Any information is highly appreciated.

If there is an increased speed for internet there will be hassel free media streaming in both wired connection and wireless connection.
If you have an 802.11n card in your computer. New generation routers speaks an entirely different language than 802.11g cards, so while those adapters can work with the E4200v2 for example, they are not optimized to work with it. It is like having to translate from one language to another in real time when going from N to G... So in those cases the old router will show a stronger signal than the new one.
You can try the following settings:
A] With the help of Cisco Connect Software (if at all you have installed the router with the help of this software)
1] Open the software and go to the option which says "Router Settings"
2] Then click on the option which says "Advanced Settings" which will take you to the router's configuration page.
3] Then go to the Wireless tab, keep network mode as mixed,
For Channel Settings of 2.4 GHz you can make Channel Width to 20 MHz only and Channel to 6, 9, 11..
For Channel Settings of 5 GHz you can make Channel Width to 20 MHz only and Channel to 40 or 161...
B] If you haven't installed Cisco Connect then you can log on to the router's user interface using it's default IP address in the browser which is 192.168.1.1 and type in 'admin' as the password leaving the username field blank. This will take you to the router's web interface and then follow steps as mentioned above to make the changes.

  • E4200 - Great Disappointment

    Cisco E4200 Wireless Router
when i purchased this i assumed (incorrectly) that the previous high quality of Linksys and to some extent Cisco would mean that simple things, like connecting to a USB hard drive to the router would actually work. but it didn't. i have tried many different types of usb drives with no luck. then i thought the Cisco-Linksys web site would be useful- but it wasn't, not even in the slightest way. they just keep throwing you the same "how to" instructions with no discussion on setting up more complex connections. finally i called the technical support, assuming again that Cisco knew what they were doing. after being on hold for 30 minutes and being forced to listen to ads and loud country music i got through to a strongly accented women who could barely hear me because she was sitting in a room with hundreds of voices in the background. she never could hear me nor understand me and i repeated my question many times until i gave up. i find it sad to say but i think, because of pressures on their stock price, Cisco is giving up on the retail end of the business and is just trying to scare the remaining retail customers away. as a result i would never buy a Cisco product again and this is a bad business practice on their part since i do have some influence over my own companies commercial purchases. time to short the Cisco stock. you will be better off trying a different company more interested in remaining in this business.

This seems interesting as with your Linksys E4200, connecting a USB HDD is fairly easy and even on their official website, much is given as far as support to that part is concerned, http://homesupport.cisco.com

  • E4200 - IPv6 Neighbor Discovery

    Hi,
I am currently developping an embedded IPv6 stack and I needed to get an IPv6 compatible router to perform different tests. I purchased an E4200 router, knowing that the latest firmware includes Native IPv6 support. On Cisco blog, I read that the router should now support RFC6204:
"While many of the base IPv6 specifications have been available for years, the IETF published RFC 6204 which defines the basic requirements for an IPv6 home router as recently as April 2011. IP is one of the most important protocols to the Internet, and IPv6 is the biggest change in IP in over 30 years. We want to be careful that the implementations we ship work well and adhere to the latest standards so that we do not hinder the adoption of IPv6 by content providers and ISPs."
    Source: http://blogs.cisco.com/consumer/linksys-e4200-wireless-router-supports-ipv6/
My first test step involved the Neighbor Discovery Protocol and RFC6204 clearly states the following:
"The IPv6 CE router MUST support router behavior according Neighbor Discovery for IPv6 [RFC4861]"
My first question is the following: Is it normal that I  don't see any 'Router Advertisement' messages send by the router? According to RFC4861, it is not.
It must day that my ISP doesn't support IPv6 so it doesn't assign a global IPv6 address to my router. However, I only require to have a link-local IPv6 link (at least for now). Can it explain why the router doesn't send periodic "Router Advertisement" messages?
Second, the router correcty responds to my "Neighbor Solicitation" messages when I try to ping the link-local address. But
it is not responding to my "Router Solicitation" messages. It's also conflicting with RFC4861.
Does someone know what is going on with Neighbor Discovery on that router? I will appreciate any comments & replies.
    Many thanks!

Many thanks for you input. We decided to return the consumer router and we purchased a CISCO 881. The IOS software is much more flexible and it actually do what we want.
IPv6 experts are not easy to find so if you don't mind, I would have another question on a behavior I observed recently with our CISCO 881 router.
I implemented the ICMPv6 echo request functionnality and it works fine when I try to reach different hosts on my network.
However,  I also tested it by using the link-local IP address of my router as the target. First, my stack sends a Neighbor Solicitation message (using IPv6-MCAST dest MAC address) to resolve the router IP address (assuming it is not yet on the router list) . The router reply back with a Neighbor Advertisement message, but does not includes the 'Target link-layer address' option into its message.
However, according the the RFC4861 (page 25),  in Neighbor Advertisement messages, the Target link-layer address "option MUST be included on link layers that have addresses when responding to multicast solicitations."
It looks like a bad implementation; I was expecting the Neighbor Advertisement message, even if sent by a router, to include the Target link-layer option when responding to my multicast Neighbor Solicitation. Do you agree with that?
    Simon
