E4200 - L2TP Connections

Linksys E4200, Y U NO WORK normally with L2TP ?

Before I suggest you for any troubleshooting steps, I would like to ask few questions. Like what is the exact problem that you are facing with the router E4200 via L2TP connection? Is it the speed causing the problem?
Your question is not self explanatory, try and put in some details about what exactly you are looking for. If you can elaborate you r problems that you have with the router E4200 so that I can help you in giving better resolution.

  • Limited number of 5 concurrent VPN (ipsec/l2tp) connections to OSX Server

We've configured OS X 10.6 Server on XServe to accept VPN connections either via PPTP or via IPSEC/L2TP using a PreSharedKey.
When multiple clients try to connect using IPSec/L2TP, we experience problems as soon as 5 users are connected. No additional ipsec/l2tp connections can be created until one of the 5 existing connections is terminated, but then a new connection can start immediately.
Sniffing with tcpdump, the following can be seen on the server side:
    09:24:45.349541 IP clientIP.isakmp > serverIP.isakmp: isakmp: phase 1 I ident
    09:24:45.354978 IP serverIP.isakmp > clientIP.isakmp: isakmp: phase 1 R ident

    09:24:50.365799 IP clientIP.isakmp > serverIP.isakmp: isakmp: phase 2/others I oakley-quick[E]
The last lines are repeated several times, until the connection attempt times out.
When using PPTP connections, we don't experience these problems, and in addition PPTP connections can even be created when 5 ipsec/l2tp connections are already established.
Does anyone know if there is some kind of limitation for the number of concurrent ipsec/l2tp connections built into OS X server? So far, we have not seen anything like this in the docs.

Ok, IMAP server almost universally allow multiple connections. Thunderbird as you would have observed uses 5 if they are available. As Airmail suggested, iphones just use more and more until they exhaust the available connections. There is no set maximum option.
However there are other things that can consume connections and some may surprise you.

  • How can I configure Lion server to accept inbound VPN (L2TP) connections while connected as client to another vpn service?

    I have what I believe to be a unique need;
I have a MacPro (1,1) running Lion with Server app.
I require that this particular machine be connected as a client to a VPN server, while at the same time acting as a VPN server for my network.
The PPTP connection configuration is such that "Send all traffic over VPN connection" is checked.
If PPTP client is NOT connected, I can connect to Lion as VPN server. As soon as I make the connection from Lion as a client, I can no longer
    connect to Lion VPN server.
I understand this is because I am forcing all traffic out the virtual interface (tun0) and eth0 is no longer listening on the local network.
    1. Is it possible to bind the VPN client (on Lion Server) to a particular interface? If I could tell the PPTP client to only use eth1 as the interface of choice, my assumption would be that eth0 would then be free to accept incoming connections.
    2. Is it possible to bind the VPN service  (on Lion Server) to a particular interface? if I could tell the vpn serviec to only listen on eth1, and in turn tell the PPTP client to NOT communicate on eth1 but only eth0 then perhaps I could separate the communications?
In my head, it seems as though both of the above options would be required in order to use Lion as both a VPN server and VPN client
    Any and all help appreciated.

This is a standard facet of most VPNs - the problem lies in your NAT router since both clients appear to come from the same IP address as far as the VPN server is concerned, and the router can't separate out the traffic.
There are a couple of solutions.
First, the built-in VPN server supports L2TP and PPTP protocols. You should be able to connect one system under each protocol, so that gets your two machines connected.
Second, you can replace your NAT router with one that supports multiple VPN clients (often termed 'VPN passthrough').
Third, setup a site-to-site tunnel so that your entire LAN is connected to the VPN (this saves you from having to run a separate VPN client on each machine, but is typically only worth it when you have more machines).

  • E4200 Drops connection

Hey guys I'm having a bit of trouble with my e4200,
It keeps on "dropping" connection, and by dropping I mean it constantly around 3-5 minutes the internet stops working with all my computers, it's connected by wifi with 2 PC's, and 1 PC is wired with an ethernet cable, and I also have 2 mobile devices connected at it. The internet would start working again within 30s, to 1m, but that it drops soon.
Methods I've done to fix it:
-Updated firmware to the latest one
    -Set the MTU to 1400
    -Reset it, (30 second press)
-Rebooted, (Cooled down, doesn't really run hot just a little warm)
    -Restored to factore defaults
    Please help, thanks!

Hi , have you tried observing the modem's internet connection?

  • E4200 bad connection + slow

    hey,
i just bought an e4200 and i have problems with the connections,
if i am sitting directly next to the router the connection works fine,
i can download with my laptop with wireless lan with about 3.5 to 5 mb/s, and 7 mb/s when i am connected with a lan cable,
the problems begin when i am in the other, the connection is extremly bad (2 or 3 bars on the laptop)
and i can only download with about 400-500 kb/s, with my desktop pc it is even worse, i have one bar and
the connection drops constantly and i download with about 20-80 kb/s per second, i use as a wireless lan card -  a
    linksys wmp600n,
the distance between the rooms is maybe 10 meters
the settings for both 5ghz and 2.4 ghz are mixed and everything set to auto (i tried with different setups, eg only 5ghz, but nothing helped, in fact with only 5ghz the connection was even worse)
i even tried it with another wireless lan card, but the tp link card i have could barely find the e4200,
both wireless cards should work fine when i tested them with the hotspot functionality of my android (funny thing is even my android phone could produce a better connection from the other room than the router)
i also tried different drivers for the linksys wireless lan card (didn't help)
firmware of the e4200 is up to date
i have no idea what to do anymore

hey, first of all, thanks for the quick replies
i changed the settings in the advanced wireless settings
my laptop seems to work fine now, i pull down 2.5 to 4 mb/s (depending on network mode, n+mixed is up to 4mb/s, g is only up 2 mb/s, bars are 3-4)
but the desktop pc is still a problem
no matter which network mode i use the connection drops constantly,
i have only 1 or 2 bars and the speed is still ~20-50 kb/s
and often the router doesn't even show up on the pc
maybe it's an issue with the linksys wirelss card? though it works with the old router
the settings for the wireless card:

  • E4200 not connecting with Cradlepoint CBR450 set to bridge mode

I am trying to replace my Cradlepoint MBR1200 with a CBR450 in bridge mode, to let the E4200 take over all the WAP and DHCP handling, but having a hard time.
I set the CBR450 in bridge mode and when I connect it to my laptop it properly passes the IP info to my Mac and allows me to connect.  I then connect it to the E4200 WAN port with it set to get IP address automatically but nothing ever happens and I am never allowed traffic in/out over the WAN.
I *can* get internet access by leaving the CBR450 in normal mode (handling DHCP, etc) and then plugging it into the E4200 LAN port and having the E4200 set to bridge.
Any ideas why the E4200 WAN port is not getting the bridge info and allowing connection?  FWIW, works fine connecting to a DSL modem with the DSL model set to bridge mode at my other house.
CBR450 and E4200 both on latest firmwares.

When you configure/edit the Primary Lan on the CBR450 to IP pass through mode, change the lease time under DHCP Server tab to something very low, like 2 minutes. When in pass-through mode, the CBR450 still assigns the IP address from the aircard directly to the ethernet interface, but uses DHCP to do this. Sometimes when connecting to Cisco devices, it helps when the lease time is set this low.

  • Can not establish L2TP connection to Mac Server via VPN

    Hi,
I am asking for some help on this VPN Problem:
since yesterday I have a new Mac mini Server running OS X 10.9.3 and Server Software 3.1.2 - my goal is to reach some deivces in my home network from outside, mainly with the iPhone or iPad.
    Dyn.org
I registered with Dyn.com a hostname using my outside IP Address. Server Type: Host with IP Address and used the IP Address presented to me in the stup wizard. This one is shown as active and when I ping or Lookup the Host Name it is responding - so I think I am fine here.
    Mac Mini Server
Next I have setup a user on the server who can use VPN. Next I have setup the VPN service with L2TP, using the Host name von dyn.org, a nice shared secret, IP range 10.0.1.190 to 10.0.1.199, DNS 10.0.1.1, no routs.
I exported this as config file to my iPhone.
The VPN Protocol in the Server says, it is listening for connections.
When I turn on VPN on the iPhone it replies always L2TP-VPN-Server has not answered.
    AirPort Extreme
The AirPort Extreme is configured by the Server with Ports 500, 1701, 4500 and the Mac Server 10.0.1.26 as Privat IP Address.
The Internet Tab shows Router and DNS as 192.168.211.1 and IPv4 Address as 192.168.211.109
I actually do not understand why I have a 192.168.xxx.xxx DNS and router entry while I have the Privat Network on 10.0.1.xxx
The Protocol for VPN just says nothing at all, besides that it is listening. I guess something is blocking the connection to the server.
By looking at my above configutation - what am I doing wrong? Why do I get this L2TP-VPN-Server error message? I changed the password for the user to be sure I am not miss spelling it. Did not help.
    Any idea?
    Thank you for your support!
    Regards
    Klaus-Martin

According to your IP addresses you listed, you might have two devices that are trying to create a NATed network (one in the 10.0.0.0/8 and 192.168.0.0/16 networks). Can you list what devices you have between your server and the Internet?
I'm going to take a guess that you have a router/modem prodived by your ISP, and this is going to give you a 192.168.211.0/24 network (since it set up as a router to provide its own network). You then plugged an Airport into this router and configured it to set up its own wireless network on its own subnet (10.0.1.0/24). The server is on this network, sees the Airport (and lets you configure it). So while your hostname points to your external address (which is good), it's just that external address is the WAN side of the modem/router and not the Airport. I think your network is set up like this: Internet  --> ISP modem  -->  Airport --> Server. If this is the case, you need to set up the ISP modem/router to port forward L2TP ports to your Airport (which in turn, port forward to your server). Or you could set your ISP modem/router into bridge mode and have the Airport dial the connection to the ISP (more complicated).
Have you tried VPN from the local network, say put the phone on wifi and make sure that works? This would be a quick test to make sure the phone and server are set up properly.
Also, have you tried port scanning your host from a computer outside your network, like from an iPhone on celluar? That would help you determine if you have routing configured properly for the L2TP VPN ports.

  • E4200 dropping connections

my e4200 updated with latest 1.00.1 firmware is constantly dropping connections from the outside to existant lan servers running low traffic services when my machine is using torrent or internet gaming.( call of duty modern warfare )
anyone else with that behavior ?
when will cisco fix this ?
    cheers

    lordgrinz,
I believe you. I just wanted to point out there are many users not experiencing issues (given their needs and the features they use). Given this, there are perhaps specific scenarios / setups  under which the issues occur, some of which may not be Cisco's fault (software or hardware conflicts with equipment from other manufacturers).
For example, when I used my Rosewill wireless utlity (came with my 802.11n USB adapter), it conflicted with something that caused the E4200 to stop broadcasting wireless / lock up on the wireless side.
I stopped using the Rosewill utlity and the issue has not happened again in over a week (I reproduced the issue by reenabling  the utlity at one point and within two days I experienced the same problem again).
It also did not happen the first few weeks when I was not using the Rosewill utlity and had occurred another time when I used it right after getting the router (i.e. during the 2 periods of time during which the utility was disabled I had zero issues and the two times I turned the utility back on, the problem occurred again.
(I only liked the Rosewill utility for it's advanced view of wireless networks in my area, including their exact signal strength, channel etc. I think SSIDer, as an alternative, provides this anyway).
    That is just one example.
I am not saying the E4200 does not have flaws (I believe there are some documented DHCP issues that some have experienced etc.).
I am only saying that with my setup and the features I use, my E4200 has been rock solid.

  • Linksys e4200 - Best Connection for Streaming on Sony S580 wifi Blu ray Player

I have a new e4200 and I am trying to improve the signal for my blu ray player.  The player is down one floor frm the router and I am able to get some reception on the blu ray.  But there are times when I get spooling interuptions and drops of the network when I am doing something like Netflix.  I have attended to all the potential physical contraints on the router that I can (ie, things in the way, barriers, etc), and have done basic setup changes like change the channel to remove interference.
I am not a techie but I learn stuff from internet and can fix a lot of problems.  This one is a bit tougher.  I think that I should be able to get a stronger signal with this router and want to know how I can optimize my setting to achieve this.  With a signal meter I read a signal strength of approx -70dBm and speed of up to 12mbps on the onscreen meter...but this fluctuates from a low in the 3s, 4s and 5s.  As I said the player is down a level and about 20ft east from the router with a few unmovable walls and the obvious staircase.
Any help of setting to solidify the signal would be appreciated.  Thnx in advance for the help.

i just thought of another issue that may be helpful.  the wireless receiver on the bd player is 802.11 b/g/n and is on 2.4 ghz band.  sorry for all the adds, but i figure more info is better than less.
    thanks

  • L2TP connection troubleshooting

Hi, I'm trying to set up VPN on my work network so that I can get on the network from home. Everything seems to be set up correctly, ports are forwarded, the VPN server is definitely on and working, yet I cannot connect from home; Internet Connect just sits there saying "Contacting VPN Server..." then times out with a "server did not respond" message after awhile. Yet I can connect to the website and server admin service on that same server without a problem.
    Here's my set up:
    Work:
    Linksys router
    - no DMZ, all ports have to be forwarded
    - ports 500, 1701, 4500, 311 and 80 are forwarded to the XServe
    XServe G5
    - OSX Server unlimited client, 10.4.3
    - VPN: L2TP w/Shared Secret
    - Firewall disabled
    Home:
Mac Mini (behind its own router) w/Server Admin tools installed (and able to connect to the server, so I know that much is working)
I've verified that VPN is working, as I've been able to log into it over the LAN via Internet Connect running on another Mac in the office.
I've also verified that the three UDP ports needed for L2TP are open; I installed nmap on my Mac Mini at home, and the following scan:
    nmap -sU -p u:500,1701,4500 my.work.domain
shows all 3 ports as "open/filtered."
I'm really stumped as to what else I'm supposed to do at this point. Anybody have any ideas?
    XServe G5 Dual 2.3GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   also: two PowerMac G4s (Sawtooth & Quicksilver); 1.42GHz SuperDrive Mac Mini; 500MHz iMac G3

I obviously didn't read you post correctly, but if you can connect while on the LAN it should work from across Internet too, if the UDP port forwarding works and the router doesn't "steal" any traffic.
If you enable OpenDirectory and put your VPN users in there you need to have/add a MPPE/vpn_xxxxx... user to LDAP also for VPN to work.
You don't need to have OD running.
In Panther server the VPN users needed an advanced/OD password, not so in Tiger server.
If either server or client is behind NAT, IKE UDP port 500 is transferred to UDP port 4500 after initial NAT traversal negotiation - NAT-T, and UDP port 500 is used for transfering the data (encapsulating ESP in UDP). I belive UDP port 1701 is used for taking down the connection (used for NAT-T only) when you disconnect - it seems you can do whithout it, Microsoft doesn't mention it when they do NAT-T for L2TP (Windows 2003 server behind NAT - not compatible with OS X built-in L2TP client).
If both server and client use/have public IPs, the ESP protocol (protocol 50 not TCP/UDP port which are protocol 6 and 17 resp.) and UDP port 500 is used "as is", even works with XP built-in VPN client.
(Apple changed the VPN server/client behaviour to use NAT-T even if only one side is behind NAT somwhere in early Panther 10.3 revisons. Before if only the client was behind NAT, ESP and UDP port 500 was used "as is" which made the Windows compatibility greater. I guess it was done to better support the use of cheap NAT routers which may not support "inbound" ESP or GRE, used for PPTP, forwarding and/or VPN passthrough correctly.)
Make sure you type the VPN short or longname username as it is entered in WGM (doesn't matter for AFP but seems to matter for VPN).
Also make sure your home LAN and works LAN doesn't have overlapping IP ranges (shouldn't matter for connectivity but does for "routability").
Routing definitions private/public? IP-forwarding in server (in Tiger server in NAT config)?
DNS in VPN settings (or manually added to VPN client L2TP setting when tunnel is up)?
Last but not least, when the tunnel is up you might try:
    sudo tcpdump -i ppp0

  • E4200 - Dropping connection

Save your money...get a cheaper router...because this is NOT worth the extra money...I will most likely have to get an extender...and my router and computer are no more than 50 feet apart, all on one floor, with two very wide archways between the two devices, and I experience drops every day...When I called tech support they tried to tell me that they would exchange it for the 3200!!! That is the cheaper model!!! I told them to send me half of what I paid so that I could buy an extender! Obviously they wouldn't do that!!!

There is no such issue with the router E4200 which creates such kind of problem. Just it requires proper settings on the router’s web interface. So if I relate your issue then the above mentioned solution justifies the troubleshooting steps to be taken, however, in addition to that I would also like to suggest you to try and install your Linksys E4200 router using the Cisco Connect Software just in case, if you are not using it....
Installation disc that came along with your router would help you in installing this router using the Cisco Connect Software, using which you can expect this router to offer you best throughput with wireless connectivity in terms of downloading and uploading of data.....
To set up your router using the Cisco Connect Software, you can use:
    http://www6.nohold.net/Cisco2/ukp.aspx?pid=80&app=vw&vw=1&login=1&json=1&docid=e30f926604334d5386685...
Also, try re-installing your router using the Cisco Connect Software, and it should help your cause....Just in case required, you can use the above mentioned troubleshooting steps.....

  • WRT1900AC does not support L2TP connection by L2TP server name

Basically - reiterating on my issue again and the question to Linksys personnel: I’m having WRT1900AC and have the issue connecting to my ISP. My ISP uses internet access authorization by ISP L2PT server name (not IP address). Linksys router configuration allows me to enter only IP address of the L2TP server, not L2TP domain server name. This is huge issue for me as I can figure out of course the IP address of the currently active L2TP ISP server but my ISP can not guarantee that in 10-15 min the server IP will be the same. I badly need the capability to use the L2TP server NAME (not IP address) in the config field of the router setup. Please let me know when this feature will be added to the new firmware for WRT1900AC and when this new firmware is going to ben released ? Thanks!

Hmm. What I know is that, Linksys WRT1900AC allows VPN tunnels using IPSec, L2TP or PPTP protocols to pass-through the router. But you can also set your router's Internet Connection Type to L2TP. Simply click on "Edit" (next to "Type of Internet Connection"). Then choose "L2TP" as your Connection Type from the drop-down menu. Make sure your settings (Server IPv4 address, Username, Password, Connection Mode, MTU) match.

I installed the E4200. Internet works fine, and the internet connection is maximum performance. But if I copy a file between laptops, or to my mediaplayer (AC Ryan HD2), the connection is 3MB/s tops. I changed to the 5gHz and N settings, still no change.
    The connection is very good.
I ran out of options, anyone an idea???
    Regards,

So first of all I would like to inform you that if you can upgrade the latest firmware on the Router which can be downloaded from the CISCO website ( homesupport.cisco.com ) ....
Once you done with the upgrading of the Router then reset the Router and Reconfigure it.....
As far as wireless is concern do the following settings:
For Channel Settings of 2.4 GHz you can make Channel Width to 20 MHz only and Channel to 6, 9, 11..
For Channel Settings of 5 GHz you can make Channel Width to 20 MHz only and Channel to 40 or 161..
Upgrade the drivers of the WLAN card of both the Laptops...
Disable all the anti-virus and security centers...
After doing all these settings then check the condition...
