E4200 - Losing Internet Signal

Trying to figure out our internet problem. Not sure if it's the ISP or router! Keep losing net signal. Thought it was the modem but last time I checked it & modem looked fine. Router light wasnt steady. It dropped twice after I rebooted both, and the router's light was flashing each time. ISP shows no drops from modem. We had a storm roll through Tuesday but there were no outages in my area & the router is plugged into a surge protector. It's an E4200.

If modem's internet connection is working fine then probably it's with the router. Are you experiencing the problem wired or wirelessly thru the router? If both then what I would suggest is that you change some settings on the router. For the wired connection, you try lowering down the mtu set on the router. For the wireless connection issue, you can change the wireless settings like changing the network name for the 5Ghz network and 2.4Ghz network, changing the channel and changing the wireless security. For the steps, you may refer to this link:

  • Keep losing internet signal

I have a modem through Comcast and a regular, bought-at-Best-Buy router and up till a month or so ago, they've been working well. Not perfectly, granted, 'cause eventually even the best routers need to be rebooted (at least, in my experience), but lately it's been a lot worse.
Sometimes I'll be watching something on hulu (constantly streaming is the best way to diagnose this problem) and the show will suddenly stop and the buffer will show that they've only got 1 out of 5 going. When this happens, I have to click on Airport, turn it off and wait at least 30 seconds to get it going again. Then, it's fine. Usually. Sometimes I have to hit the power switch on the power strip that the modem and router are plugged into, but not that often. And this happens on both computers, and occasionally on my iPhone as well.
I think it's clear that it's a communication issue between the router/modem and the computers. What isn't clear to me is how to fix it. I don't want to buy a new router if I absolutely don't have to.
    Any advice?

What is your regular router? What speeds have you contracted from Comcast? Are they delivering? Realize that when many people are on the same channel as you that things slow down so you might want to try changing the channel as a first step. Then run some speed test from: http://www.speedtest.net/
just to see if Comcast is delivering what they promise.

  • How can I get my Mountain Lion more stable on the internet? It keeps losing the signal. Lion is solid as a rock on my other Macbook using the same router.

I downloaded Mountain Lion on my Macbook Air, and it works without a hitch except for internet connectivity. It keeps losing the signal. My Macbook using the same connection is solid as a rock and never loses the connection. Is there something I can do? Since my Macbook works weell under exactly the same conditions and if memory serves so did my Macbook Air with Lion before I downloaded Mountain Lion, none of the usual fixes seem to apply.

I have the same problem, I think.  I dont lose wifi signal, the mba stays connected to the router the whole time.   Pings also seem unaffected by this problem.  The problem is that web pages seem to load intermittently, in other words, it loads a page in 2 minutes.  It loads:
the first 25% in the first 5 seconds
the next 25% in the next 50 seconds
the next 25% in the next 5 seconds
the last 25% in the last 50 seconds
Its quite annoying considering this can be as simple a page as goolge search results or even google.com.
I thought it was my ISP and i even made a big racket about it, switched ISPs and I have the same problem.
With the previous ISP I had a cisco router.  This new ISP supplied their own modem/wifi.  That doesnt seem to be the problem.
Im thinking its a config issue on my mba.  I have the latest updates to ML.
    Any ideas?

  • Losing Internet Connection/Signal

    Hello,
I have the Airport Extreme 802.11 base station and it's worked well for two years. About two weeks ago, I started losing the signal and having network timeout connections. I talked with the ISP (Virgin Media) and the signal is coming into the house fine. Is it possible that the base station is failing? The Airport Utility is 5.4.1 (not sure what the firmware is as I can't find it). If it is likely to be the firmware problem, how do I revert back to 7.3?
    Thanks.
    lsb

Same here. I have an AEBS (802.11n GigE) running in 5ghz n-only which worked beautifully until I installed that latest 7.4.1 firmware. I've also got an Airport Express on "extend network" but without "allow wireless clients" enabled. Mainly to extend the network to some ethernet devices in another room. I had very bad throughput with the 7.4.1 firmware in this setup. -- In this situation, the remote ethernet devices (connected to the airport express's ethernet) would get <1ms pings for 3-4 seconds, then a >1000ms ping, via mtr. Over and over again. Reverting both devices to 7.3.2 resolved these issues instantly. Go figure.
On the other hand, at work I have the same 802.11n GigE airport extreme on n-only and pretty easily get 10-15MB/sec out of it regularly on the 7.4.1 firmware. Go figure. Hope someone knows the answer to this.

  • How can I get my iphone to stop losing the signal?

How can I get my iphone to stop losing the signal?

Thanks for the tip.  If only I could find somewhere where I did not lose the signal.
I am based in the United Kingdom. The carrier is Orange.
I lose the signal inside buildings and outside of buildings.  It happens at work and at home.  It happens in Centarl London in the open air and inside.  It happens in small towns.. It happens in the countryside.  It happens in motor cars.  It happens in airports.  It happens when the battery is fully charged, when it is half charged and when it's low on charge.  It happens using the phone, when reading messages and when using the internet.
    Hope this helps.

  • Losing internet

I keep losing internet and have to diagnose with network diagnostics repeatedly, but there is no problem with my internet connection, please help!

    Hi seneht,
I am connected via a wireless router to 1 mac and 2 pc's. I have not had any connectivity problems with the PC's going into and out of sleep mode. While, I have never had to restart my Mac to reconnect after sleep mode, it will OFTEN drop the signal and need to search again. This can be a simple as reloading page or shutting down browser or email apps and then reopening again and this works 100% of the time.
I have since changed some of my Energy Saver Preferences to get around this. I now set my computer to 'NEVER' sleep but of course allow my display to sleep. This is quite harmless to your Mac and many users prefer this rather than letting computer sleep. In using this option, I have not had any dropped connections, and when I wake the display all is still connected and can pick up where I left off...

  • Losing Internet, Despite Wi-Fi and Router Connection

A month after moving into a new apartment and setting up our internet, we began to have debilitating internet connection issues. We have a MacBook Pro 10.9.4, an iMac 10.6.8, two iPhone 5's and a PS3 that are wirelessly connect to our router, a Verizon Actiontec Model GT784WNV, on Verizon DSL Internet.
For no apparent reason after a month of use, all of our devices began regularly losing internet connection at once, multiple times a day---sometimes at two minute intervals. According to our computers, our Wi-Fi Network remained "Connected" and displaying a full signal when our browsers were unable to connect at all, and the wireless router showed a steady "Internet" connection light. Despite this, the only way to get the internet back has been by restarting the router.
It seems worth mentioning that during our repeated restarts of the router, both computers would occasionally (maybe every other day) alert us that "Another device on the network is using your computer's IP address" as we re-established our Wi-Fi conncection. Since our Wi-Fi is password protected, it only seems logical that it's the MacBook Pro and iMac causing problems for each other. Over the past two years, with similar DSL router setups and restarts, this never was a problem when re-establishing Wi-Fi connections on our computers. After doing some research to see if this might be our main issue, under Network>Advanced>Preferred Networks I removed and re-added the network on both computers, and confirmed they were set to Configure IPv4: "Using DHCP." This had no effect on our internet issue, although we've received less alerts now. For the most part, both computers seem to establish unique IP addresses whenever re-connecting to the Wi-Fi. Is this issue core to our problem, or just a coincidence?
I recently tried connecting our PS3 to the router via Ethernet cable while streaming Netflix to see if it'd stop dropping the Internet connection, but it turned out to be just as unreliable as wireless---to me this suggests that the router/ISP is the issue. We've also tried turning off Wi-Fi on all but one device, but it eventually loses connectivity as well.
I'm wondering if this suggests a issue with our computer settings, or if I need to be in touch with our ISP in regards to a faulty router or intermittent internet? Any insight or suggestions would be a huge help, thanks so much!

You're going to be troubleshooting this and probably eventually discussing this with Verizon.
In the typical small dynamic-IP network setup, the WiFi router gets its address from Verizon via DHCP, and the WiFi router then issues "private" addresses to your clients via its own DHCP server.
Restarting the WiFi router can cause address collisions, as the cheaper WiFi routers don't probe for existing clients and just start handing out addresses and this quite possibly leads to address collisions.   The smarter WiFi routers will probe the network and determine if an IP address is already in use, and will then avoid passing it out again.
if your WiFi router supports it, I'd look to move to 5 GHz — from what I can tell from what few specs available, it doesn't appear to support 5 GHz — as the 2.4 GHz band tends to be heavily used in apartment buildings and built-up areas, and with excessive interference resulting.  (Though your attempts to use a hard-wired connection imply a problem with the WiFi router or with the DSL.)

  • How can I use an Airport Express to join my wireless network and provide an internet signal to my Power Mac g5 via an ethernet cable?

I have a power mac g5 that does not have a wireless card, and connects to the internet via ethernet cable.
I want to know how to set up an airport express so that it joins my wireless home network and provides the G5 with an internet signal.
This via an ethernet cable that is plugged  into the airport express and then into the ethernet port on the g5.
Please advise as I have configured the airport express in every way possible, the green light is on and when I plug the ethernet cable into the G5 my network cofigurations shows nothing and says that the ethernet cable is not plugged in (It is).
I get an internet signal if the ethernet cable is plugged directly into my wireless router, so the ethernet port works.
    Please assist. Thanks.

Two requirements that must be met to do what you want.......
    1) An AirPort Express 802.11n must be used. Check the Model No on the label on the side of the Express. It needs to be A1264. Any other model number will not do what you want.
    2) The Express must be configured to "Join a wireless network" and the option to enable Ethernet Clients must be checked.
Open AirPort Utility and click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below the row of icons
The box to "Allow Ethernet Clients" must be checked
Please check to verify that your AirPort Express meets both requirements

  • No Internet signal with 2 Airport express' & Ipod Hifi

My Airport express connects with a router and gives a wireless signal all over the house. The 2nd airport express (less than 50'ft. away connects to an Ipod Hifi. The 2nd airport blinks yellow and won't allow me to go onto the internet (ie radio streaming) while I am playing my Itunes thru the Ipod hifi successfully. Also, the 1st Airport is a soid green coIor.Why do I lose the internet signal when the Hifi is playing my Itunes library? I thought the 2nd airport just becomes a part of a network which is how it's setup under the Airport Admin. Utility? What am I doing wrong? Thanks for the help...Henry

my question is if they are set up to extend my network will my devices like iPhone, iPad, iPod all switch to the strongest available wifi? my set up as follows.
A newer Mac computer will automatically switch to the strongest wireless access point as it roams about the house, but unfortuntely the iOS operating system used in the iPhone, iPad, iPod etc. is not as sophisticated and will usually not switch automatically to another access point.
You will likely find that you need to power off the iOS device when you move to another area and power it back up to get it to pick up the strongest access point. Or, you would switch off the Wireless on the iOS device and then switch it back on when the device moves to another area.

  • IMac will not load internnet sites despite it having all green lights on the Network Diagnostics screen.  In other words there is a valid internet signal going into the iMac, but the machine will not load sites. Help? iOS 10.9.5

iMac will not load internet sites, despite having all green lights (strong WiFi signal etc) on the Network Diagnostics screen. in other words there is a strong
internet wifi signal going into the iMac but the machine does not connect to the internet.  I OS 10.9.5.  Other devices work fine with the same internet signal.

    iOS 10.9.5 does not exist.
iOS refers to the operating system on iPhones, iPads, and iPod Touch.
10.9.5 was never a version of a Classic operating system.
10.9.5 was a version of Mac OS X, and is 13 years newer than Classic.
Here are reasons for WiFi signal to fail even when they appear to be strong:
    Most common Wifi issues
Your Mac may be too close to your WiFi router, in which case, it might be better to connect to it via an ethernet cable if it can't be moved.

best you can do is to change the channel(s) your wireless router is broadcasting on.

  • Internet signal booster?  Is there one available?

    Hi,
I had to relocate my router to a different location to ensure a strong wireless Internet signal for the desktop computers. However, when I go outside, my signal is too weak for my macbook to connect. Can anyone recommend a signal booster I can get to help strengthen my wireless connection for my macbook?
    Thank you!

What base station do you have right now?
Some base stations support external antennas, which can be an inexpensive way of increasing range.
If yours doesn't, then you may be able to get a second base station and setup WDS (Wireless Distribution System) where the second base station acts as a relay back to the main base station (that's connected to the internet). Again, this depends somewhat on the make/model of base station you already have since not all of them support WDS (Apple's do).

  • Can I set up a wifi router to receive an internet signal by connecting it to a computer?

Can I set up a wifi router to recieve an internet signal by connecting it to a computer?
It seems to me that routers are designed to connect directly to the internet by programming their firmware with connection info.
I'd like to connect a computer to the internet, then connect a router to that computer.
Essentially, I want a internet signal that comes through a computer before being made wireless. Is that possible?

To connect the computer to the Internet you still need some physical component, for example a wireless USB dongle. So if you want to have the Mac connecting to the Internet and then share this connection to other devices using wireless, then you can enable Internet Sharing on the Mac and select to share its Airport (wireless) connection to the other devices (which turns the Mac into a form of access point). Then the other wireless devices can connect to the Mac and use the Mac's Internet connection, which could be a wireless USB dongle or an Ethernet connection to a cable modem.

  • My 3gs (11 months old) has been losing all signal

my 3gs (11 months old) has been losing all signal for calls and both 3g/wifi, goes to "searching" then "no signal", and back to some signal but not for long at all. i upgraded to ios5 couple of wks ago but this was all happening before that, was hoping the upgrade would help, but noooooooooo! battery power has gone so bad in last few days too, charging up to 3 times a day!! cant afford a new phone so any help would be really appreciated.

A reset may help. Tap and hold the Home button and the On/Off buttons for approximately 10-15 seconds, until the Apple logo reappears. When the logo appears, release both buttons.
No content is affected by this procedure.

    Hi Professor66,
I have a couple of suggestions for you regarding this issue. Here are two links to users who have posted similar questions to yours and have found their answers in the responses to their posts:

I would suggest that you first follow the troubleshooting that the OP did in the second link, which is to test in a new user account to see if the behavior is consistent. If it is, you may need to address the issue at a software level by re-installing Safari. More information on this process can be found in the following article:
