E4200 media server

Is the E4200 DLNA certified?   The spec indicates a "UPnP AV media server" but mentions nothing about DLNA.   Cisco is a member of DLNA, so what gives?   Will DLNA devices like blu-ray players work with the E4200 and be able to stream media from a USB drive attached to the router?

Thanks for your quick response!
The E4200 router admin page does not show this NAS drive perhaps since it is not directly connected to its USB port. This NAS drive is an external 1TB drive connected to Seagate FreeAgent NAS device, aned is pogoplug-enabled and is shared by the network PCs. The gigabit port of this NAS device is connected to the router via a gigabit switch. My use-case is to see this NAS drive on the TV thru' the built-inDLNA server of E4200 router.
Can that work? Worst case, I will have to buy Twonky server for installation on the PC so that DLNA certified media/BD player can show it on TV.

  • E4200 - media server remote library

i've not seen anything that sugests this (also my E4200 is on order, pending delivery, so unable to look into it more), but is it possible to have a remote library with the E4200 media server?
i currently have a server with alot of content on it, but it does not support uPnP/DLNA. would i be able to use the E4200 to connect to the server and access it via the E4200's media server?

Once you get the Router E4200 you can create a remote library with the E4200 media server..But Media server controls are very simple with only server naming and scan controls. E4200 will distribute your media files with the built-in UPnP or DLNA server so Yes you be able to use the E4200 to connect to the server and access it via the E4200's media server...

  • E4200 Media Server failure

I have a WD USB with approx 70,000 songs on it. When I try and scan the Music, it gets approx halfway though the songs, then the Media Servers stops all communications.
The only way I can get the Media Server to recover is to power cycle the E4200
    Any ideas anyone

    Hi there.
Cisco recently released a beta firmware to be tested for the E4200 to fix media server issues.
    See the announcement here.

  • Can't copy large files to E4200 Media Server

I've rolled back my E4200 router to the old firmware 1.0.0.1, then set up a media server.
It generally works (e.g. it streams pre-existing media files to other devices). I can copy to this external drive small (say, < 1 MB) files.
The drive has enough free space.
However, I cannot copy to this external drive large (e.g. 700 MB) files.

Just chatted with a Cisco rep who offered a solution (which did not work):
On the "Setup -> Basic Setup" tab,
under "Internet Setup -> Optional Settings(required by some Internet Service Providers)" in the left column,
change "MTU" from "Auto" to "Manual", and then
change "Size" from 1500 to 1365.
Click "Save Settings" on the bottom.
(Mod Note: Agents Tech ID removed.)
(Original poster's note: not a solution.)

  • E4200 - Media Server Claim

This unit works well for a router, but so does the E3200. The E4200 is claimed, by Cisco, to be capable of being a UPnP/DLNA Media Server when a hard drive is connected to it's USB port on the back. What they don't tell you is that only a handful of Flash and Hard Drives are actually supported. I tried two USB 2.0 devices. A WD Passport (WD1600XMS-00) at 160GB and a Memorex Flash Drive at 2GB and neither were recognized by the device. And this is after upgrading the firmware. Most of the advantage of this product over the E3200 is the Media Server, but if you don't have one of the handful of storage devices supported, then forget it.
Also, there is no range advantage over any Wifi device I have ever used since before my Linksys WRT54G I bought about 7 years ago.
What's great about it: Nothing over the E3200
What's not so great: Media Server, Range

As per the scenario that you explained that even after upgrading the firmware WD Passport (WD1600XMS-00) at 160GB and a Memorex Flash Drive at 2GB neither were recognized by the Router... But after upgrading the firmware did you reset the Router and configured it back...
Secondly you need to download Cisco Connect 1.4 from the Cisco website (homesupport.cisco.com ) which contains the Virtual USB setup for the E4200 and the E3200 routers... Then only Your USB hard drive or memory stick can be installed and shared on multiple computers using the same Cisco Connect setup....
As far as wireless is concern both the Routers are dual-band Wireless-N Router... So that it means it has 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz frequencies...
For Channel Settings of 2.4 GHz you can make Channel Width to 20 MHz only and Channel to 6, 9, 11..
For Channel Settings of 5 GHz you can make Channel Width to 20 MHz only and Channel to 40 or 161..

  • Update: E4200 Media Server Issues

    Dear All,
Late last week engineering released beta firmware for the E4200 that should resolve the media server issues many have experienced.  This firmware release will go through a cycle of testing internally as well as with members of the community that we have been working with. Once the firmware has gone through the required testing and approvals it will be released publicly.  There is no ETA at the moment but we will update the community once a release window has been identified.

    Dear All,
Here is an update on the media server issue.
"The media server issue is definitely a software issue as confirmed by the engineers. A fix has been built, tested and is close to release. The firmware is currently going through the Engineering release process. This process is time consuming as this firmware is open-source and requires that Cisco follows strict guidelines to ensure that they are in compliance with the GNU General Public License. Estimated release date is around 3rd or 4th week of September if there are no other issues."
As promised, we will keep track of this issue until a fix has been released. Again, we sincerely apologize for the inconvenience.

  • E4200 Media Server ignores my folder hierarchy

I have a 1TB drive attached to my E4200 that contains several videos sorted in a folder hierarchy, like this (these are just examples):
    TV Shows
        Supernatural
            01. Episode 1.mp4
            02. Episode 2.mp4
        Burn Notice
            01. Episode 1.mp4
            02. Episode 2.mp4
        Doctor Who
            01. Episode 1.mp4
            02. Episode 2.mp4
    Movies
        Star Wars IV.mp4
        Star Trek 2.mp4
    Kids
        Sesame Street
            01. Episode 1.mp4
            02. Episode 2.mp4
        Movies
            Bolt.mp4
            Cars 2.mp4
As you can see, all of my videos are in a carefully constructed heirarchy.  This works with my old media server (Rivet for Mac).  On the E4200, however, all of these MP4 files are merged together.  My Xbox shows folders like "Albums" and "By Date", but these don't really mean anything -- all of my videos are jumbled into these folders and there's no way I can find anything.
Here's how the media server is configured:
Can someone tell me how to fix this?  If I can't find a solution, than the media server feature of this router is absolutely useless to me.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Well in this case what you can do is that once delete the shared folder from the list and add them once again one by one instead of doing it togather.
To configure your router as a media server:
    Storage > Media Server
    1. Log into the browser-based utility (see “How to open the browser-based utility” on page 23)
    2. Click the Storage tab, then click the Media Server page
    3. Click Enabled to enable the media server
    4. Enter a name for your media server in the Media Server name box The name must use only alphanumeric characters (letters A to Z and numbers 0 to 9) and can be up to 15 characters long
    5. Click Specify Folder to Scan A new window opens
    6. In the Display name field, enter a unique name for the media folder The name must use only alphanumeric characters (letters A to Z and numbers 0 to 9) and can be up to 15 characters long
    7. To share the entire drive, click Share Entire Partition
    – OR -
    To share only specific folders:
    • Click Select next to each folder you want to share
    • To navigate to a previous folder, click Return to Upper Folder
    • To view and select folders within a folder, click Enter into Folder next
    to the folder name
    8. To create a folder, enter a unique folder name into the new Folder box, then click Create
    9. To save your selections and create the media folder, click Save Settings A summary of shared folders is displayed
    10. To manually scan all shared folders, click Scan All
    – OR -
To scan an individual folder, click Scan next to the folder
    11. To schedule a scan of the media folder for new media content, select
Auto-scan every, then select a time interval from the drop-down list

  • E4200 - Media server capability

If your intention is to use the media server capabilities of this device look elsewhere. It hasn't worked since day one months ago when I was an early adopter, and Cisco has released two firmware updates to try and resolve the media server issues both of which have been a bust and required then to withdraw the update and roll their own advertised firmware back. Don't take my word for it, read it on their forums here: [...]

Hi. Cisco recently acknowledged the firmware flaw and is currently doing some beta tests to resolve the media server issue.
    Read the announcement here.

  • E4200 media server update

Has anybody tested the beta firmware? does it resolve the issue? Is there a pending release date?

I would strongly urge you to check this site for any new releases:
    http://homesupport.cisco.com/en-us/wireless/linksys/E4200
To my knowledge, the input of an individual tester is of little value, IMHO.  I am sure Linksys will do a more thorough rigorous test, taking into account the input of many testers, before releasing anything.  Moreover, I am sure Linksys would have required an agreement with the testers for confidentiality and non-disclosure.

  • E4200 Media Server Support M3U Playlist

    Dear all
I want to know it support or not?

As per the scenario that you explained for that first of all the data you want to  view is audio or vedio... Secondly you are saving the playlist directly to the HDD or you are saving the source file as well to the HDD.... And if you are saving the source file as well to HDD does that show up in any other computer if you connect that HDD.. It that does show up does that function with that computer...

  • Linksys E4200 and Media server

    Hello all,
I have configured my router as a media server with an usb hdd samsung. There is no problem until 10 minutes but after this time the server disappear in the network and I need to save again the configuration each time to see it, what is it wrong?

no my main problem is I use linksys webcams and  when I accumuliate over 6000-8000 or so small .jpg's on the drive you can access the drive with any utilitys that I have used.  They all freeze up.   I also have troubles with the router freezing up if you use the web utility to browse the folder holding the .jps's
please fix the E4200 media server in .02 firmware

  • Media server gone after v1.0.02 E4200

I have been at this for hours now   I refomatted the drive 2x and had it back once or twice until I transfer some videos and pictures to the drive then its gone.   I have rebooted the router several times and the media server is GONE.   FTP uploads and downloads work fine.
I noticed a new Twonkey interface in my webrowser in the short while the media server was working.   This is driving me crazy.
please fix the E4200 media server in .02 firmware

I was also able to reproduce this problem and I also saw that it displayed random letters in the media server webpage when using a San Disk USB. I'll let the engineers know
I don't work for Cisco. I'm just here to help.

  • E4200 - USB Storage with Media server

    Pros: Decent basic router
Cons: Advanced features don't work, not worth the price, poor support, critical forum posts deleted
Other Thoughts: The Linksys e4200 is supposed to be a high-end router, with media server capabilities. It is NOT. The media server feature does not work and has not worked correctly since product release. Linksys keeps promising a fix, but customers are still waiting. Support forum members have been pressing the company for a solution, but Linksys merely deletes critical post from the forums. This is apparently their idea of how to "fix" the problem.
There are certain features that make a router a high-end purchase. If usb storage with media server capability is one of the features you are looking for, you should avoid this product.

    Hi,
USB HDD uto 1 TB with file system NTFS ot FAT32 works just fine, if any issues try taking up the back up for the data already present on the HDD and then try to format the HDD using the router''s formatting tool available under set up page - Storage...
Please share your issues faced with the same....

  • E4200 built in Twonky media server disconnecting from PS3

I am having problems with Twonky disconnecting from my PS3 while watching movies from the attached USB drive...anyone else having this issue?
Any ideas on how to manually restart the media server other than turning off the drive or resetting the router?  Or perhaps a solution to this in settings...

Same problem here with an XBOX 360. Seems to be a common theme in several threads. The only solutions I've seen posed by admins is to change the MTU to 1365 which doesn't make sense since these problems are reported for hardwired devices and ethernet already does 1500, or to upgrade the firmware and/or reboot... none of which work. I also get the same issue when streaming to a laptop from the router, but have zero issues when the same drive is plugged directly into the laptop. I've also had issues where the Storage tab only reports as connected to the drive at USB 1.1 until a reboot of the router. It will also say "No disks available" even though I can connect to the drive through UPnP. My drive is a Seagate 2TB on the "supported" list of external drives. I would just like someone to acknowledge this is a real problem with a solution forthcoming or I'm going to have to assume it's a hardware fail that no future fix/firmware update will solve or this thing is going to have to be returned.

  • Media server / router access loss internet OK

    Hi all,
If there is already a post covering this a quick redirection is fine an my apologies.
I have a problem with the e4200 router and a mybook 1 TB connected to it. The media server works fine but after a while i loose contact with the router and the server this means that the Cisco connect doesn't work, the 192.168.1.1 doesn't work and I can't find the disk via \\. I do have internet connection via wifi as im using it now....
Any guesses as to why I loose connection to the router? The lease time is 24h and it can happen more than once in a day.
I have a telenet internet connection.
    Thanks

What hardware version of E4200 do you have? Version 1 or 2? Let me know the current firmware version on the router? You can try the following steps:
A] With the help of Cisco Connect Software (if at all you have installed the router with the help of this software)
1] Open the software and go to the option which says "Router Settings"
2] Then click on the option which says "Advanced Settings" which will take you to the router's configuration page.
3] Lower the MTU (Maximum Transmission Unit) from 1500 to 1400 or less (usually found on your routers main/ basic setup page)
B] If you haven't installed Cisco Connect then you can log on to the router's user interface using it's default IP address in the browser which is 192.168.1.1 and type in 'admin' as the password leaving the username field blank. This will take you to the router's web interface and then follow steps as mentioned above to make the changes.
