E4200 - Slow bandwidth

Don't be fooled by all the PC component review websites out there that have only taken a cursory look at the E4200. After seeing all of those I was convinced it was great, but once I got here to Amazon and saw the less-than-stellar product rating and the number of negative reviews others were leaving, I suddenly became hesitant (Amazon reviews with more than a couple of people reviewing it tend to be pretty reliable), but desperate for a router that would finally stop my problems with range issues and dropping connections I took the plunge anyway.
And now I sincerely regret it. All the negative Amazon reviews were completely valid - while it does have great range and I don't have connection drops, my speeds are noticeably slower, sometimes pages inexplicably fail to load (Even though the network is still connected) and forget about streaming anything whatsoever if you're on a device that only supports the 2.4GHz band (These same devices with which I had *no problem whatsoever* streaming anything previously except for the fact that my connection would drop every 4 hours or so and require a power cycling of the router). And for the excessive price of this thing, it is absolutely not worth it. This thing is supposed to be top-of-the-line, best-of-the-best perfect and it is anything but. I spent days trying different configurations, upgrading firmware, everything, but the problems persisted.
I'd probably give it a solid three star review if it were priced at least $50 lower than what it's at because the range it gives is definitely more than any other router I've used, but with this premium price, I expect it to be amazing. It isn't.

First of all please verify that you have got a 802.11n card in your computer. New generation routers (i.e. E4200) speaks an entirely different language than 802.11g cards, so while those adapters can work with the E4200 for example, they are not optimized to work with it. It is like having to translate from one language to another in real time when going from N to G... So in those cases the old router will show a stronger signal than the new one.
SECOND, make sure the adapter driver is up to date.
Try to do the following steps:
A] With the help of Cisco Connect Software (if at all you have installed the router with the help of this software)
1] Open the software and go to the option which says "Router Settings"
2] Then click on the option which says "Advanced Settings" which will take you to the router's configuration page.
3] Then go to the Wireless tab, keep network mode as mixed,
For Channel Settings of 2.4 GHz you can make Channel Width to 20 MHz only and Channel to 6, 9, 11..
For Channel Settings of 5 GHz you can make Channel Width to 20 MHz only and Channel to 40 or 161...
B] If you haven't installed Cisco Connect then you can log on to the router's user interface using it's default IP address in the browser which is 192.168.1.1 and type in 'admin' as the password leaving the username field blank. This will take you to the router's web interface and then follow steps as mentioned above to make the changes.

  • Apple Trailer Slow Bandwidth?

Hello, I have been trying to watch HD content from apple's site but I have to wait an ample amount of time for it to buffer before playing. I have a 10mb connection but I only show apple using 3mb-5mb of it. hmmm, is this the case for anyone else?

all i really want to know is if other people notice the HD trailers downloading slower than the their ability to get them. 10MB isn't so special anymore, only 1 mile from me people can get 30MB fios, but I still cant get it eventhough verizon has been working on my street for like 4 months messing with the fiber lines.
anyways, i took the trouble to get the ip addresses of each HD trailer I watch. this is my notes below and it appears to me they come from the same domain, apple. and it seems some movies are permissioned to use more bandwidth than others seeming one move gets 10MB and another gets 4MB on the same exact IP server. so you are very wrong then

  • Time Capsule and SLOW bandwidth with Verizon FIOS?????

Ok I have had verizon FIOS and my time capsule for almost 3 years. All running latest firmware updates (which might be the problem with the TC). For the last couple years it has been a blazing fast setup and I have a ps3, imac, macbook pro, apple tv, iphone, ipad, etc all hooked up to my network.
Then 5 days ago I buy a new Imac and the firmware update for the TC. Now the bandwidth in my house has dropped to crap. I have directly connected to the FIOS router with ethernet and its like 20 megs per second down and10 up, but when I connect my time capsule back up and go from there it is like 4 down and 3 up? It was NEVER like this before....any ideas or suggestions?

    Welcome to the discussion area!
Things were fine before two changes occurred on your network. So, it might be logical to try to isolate one thing or the other to arrive at a possible cause for your network slowdown.
You need to completely power cycle the entire network after you make any change on a network, whether that be adding a new device (the iMac) or making another change (the firmware update).
Power everything off...modem, routers, computers, consoles, printers, etc., the order is not important. Wait 5 minutes. Then power up your modem first and let it run for 5 minutes by itself. Power up the next device connected to the modem (probably your Time Capsule) the same way. Power up the next device the same way, etc. until everything is powered back up.
    What are your results?
If things are still slow, remove one of the things that you changed on your network...the iMac...by powering it off, restarting your network again (the extended power off above is not necessary) and then checking the network again.
    Any change?
If no change on the iMac test, then the other variable on your network is the firmware update. It's unlikely...+but possible+...that the firmware update changed something in the interaction between your Time Capsule and FIOS router, so something is not functioning quite correctly. Things like this can happen with firmware updates because while Apple knows what works among their own products; they cannot know what works in every instance when another product interfaces with one of of theirs.
It should be possible to rollback the firmware on your Time Capsule to the previous version if you want to try that approach. There's no guarantee of course, that this will help either. Post back if you want to try this.

  • E4200 Slow Wireless download and Network File Sharing

When I first got the E4200 up and running I was able to transfer files from my wireless laptop to a wired laptop at speeds of over 2 MBps(distance was over 40 ft).  Now I have both laptops running wireless and a desktop that is wired via ethernet to the 4200 router and network file sharing runs much slower.  Right now network transfer speeds are around 500-550 kBps.
Wireless network speeds are being affected also.  Wi-fi d/l speeds via Cisco speed test is usually 5-6x slower than my wired speed tests, with upload speeds being faster than the d/l speed(Laptop is only 2 feet away from router for testing).  And sometimes the wireless d/l speeds will slow down all the way to .15 mbps.
Has anyone come across this problem and found a fix for it, or have some suggestions?  The router settings are mostly default and I have reset it to factory defaults via web interface and tried power cycling.  But nothing so far has worked.  I would hate to have to return this router and go back to the wrt54g.

Ok, well I tried all these and changing the MTU down to 1365 made it run real slow, so I found out the optimal mtu and switched between auto and manual 1500, and auto gave me more consistent speeds.  It does seem to be running a bit faster with the name change of the 5 ghz band, and changing the channel of the 2.4 ghz band(Name changing 2.4 band did not make any noticable differences).
Right now I am getting download speeds around 10 mbps on the vista laptop(wireless), while the windows 7 desktop(wired) and laptop(wireless) are usually around 5.3-6 mbps.  File sharing between the windows 7 machines are 4.3 MBps and 2.9 MBps between vista laptop and W7 desktop.  Upload speeds on all machines are around 7mbps.
I am happier with the more consistent speeds between all machines instead of really fast between just 2, but am confused to why the vista laptop is running faster and my upload speed is faster than the download speeds on 2 of my machines.

  • WRT600N slowing Bandwidth.

    Hi Everyone,
I have a WRT600N connected to my Motorola Surfboard modem with Cox Cable Internet.  We have the premier internet package so our speeds are 25mb down and 7.5mb up.  For a while we had these speeds and it was working fine.  Now, slowly throughout the day or every couple of days, i run a speed test and our internet is at like 2mb down and 3mb up.  If i reboot the router, everything goes back to normal.  All of the computers connected to it are hard wired into the router, so this is not wireless.  I cannot figure out what the issue is or how to even troubleshoot it.  Before anyone asks, it does have the latest firmware.
Thank you very much in advance,
    Sean

Oops, I originally listed the wrong Linksys model number, but same problem.
I have a similar problem with my WRT160N v2 router also.  I use Cablevision/Optimum Online and I have noticed the same degradation in Internet speed.  I used to get 10mbps down and 2mbps up.  My download speeds have gone down to 1Mbps but my upload speed remains the same at 1.9 to 2Mbps up.  If I plug into the cable modem directly with my computer, my speeds are normal.  When using the router it degrades.
Is there anyone else with similar problems?

  • DFSR performance question - high latency and high bandwidth - windows 2012r2

    Hello,
       first question here...
We have a pair of backup servers, connected with a 1G WAN link (290 ms latency).
I am replicating backup files (mainly SQL files) between them (one-way), for DR/BCP purposes.
a Get-DfsrState regularly shows hundreds of files in waiting state, and only 16 or so being downloaded at the same time. The system is using very little bandwidth, much less than what I have set in the replication properties (256mbps)
Is there any parameter I can tweak to increase the number of files being transferred in parallel copies?
Before you ask, the WAN circuits are fine and currently ~80% free. I can easily saturate them using other technologies (rsync, gluster, HTTP). The servers are doing very little as well (2x6C, 32G ram, lots of disks, CPU usually under 10%).
Any idea on how to speed this up? I saw some registry settings in old articles for windows 2008r2, but nothing for 2012r2.
    Thanks

    Hi,
It seems that the number of downloading files is not related to bandwidth.
By default, a maximum of 16 (four in Windows Server 2003 R2) concurrent downloads are shared among all connections and replication groups. Because connections and replication group updates are not serialized, there is no specific order in which updates are
received. If two schedules are opened, updates are generally received and installed from both connections at the same time.

  • Airport performance slow after 10.5.8 upgrade

After the 10.5.8 OS upgrade I noticed that my MBPro's wifi internet was really slow, less than 2Mbps when it should be 10 - 15Mbps! I thought it was Comcast but tested the speed with the LAN Ethernet connected and the speed was normal. I tested it on my wife's black MacBook 13 inch and got slow speed on WiFi too.
I tested the speed on my hackintosh Dell Mini 9's WiFi and the speed was nice at 15Mbps. So I figured it was a firmware issue. I couldn't find anything similar to my problem here in the discussion so I was going to post the issue but then, as if Apple magically saw my issue, I received an Software Update notice about an update for the Airport Client that fixes performance issues when running on battery. So I ran the update and it fixed the problem. So for those of you out there who are wondering why their MacBook Pro and MacBook 13 has slow bandwidth, try the update.
    DLP

I have the same with my NAS. In the beginning of Leopard the same thing happened, with the connect to the server a Finder window of the disk would open. But in the last 4-5 version everything went as it was supposed to. And now I end up with all these open windows ;-(. Annoying.
Detail, I connect using a SMB server.
Would appreciate it very much if this is solved in the near future.

  • WHY IS 3G SLOW EVENINGS???

WHY IS MY VERIZON 3G (VIA EVDO MODEM) SLOW SLOW SLOW... SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY EVENINGS... 8PM TO 11PM... AND NORMALLY FAST (OVER 1Mbs DOWNLOADS, 700Kbs UPLOADS) all the rest of the week???  i NEVER have slow bandwidth speeds on SATURDAYS, SUNDAYS until late... and WEEKDAYS SEEM TO BE NORMALLY FAST, until the evenings???
I AM CONVINCED THAT VERIZON 3G BROADBAND CANNOT HANDLE THE HEAVIEST TRAFFIC TIMES... WEEKDAYS 8PM-11PM !!!
WHY IS IT THAT SPRINT IS ROLLING OUT 4G AND VERIZON CANNOT KEEP 3G UP ALL THE TIME???
IF YOU "GOOGLE" 3G BROADBAND TESTS COMPARISON BETWEEN SPRINT, ATT, AND VERIZON... YOU WILL FIND SEVERAL TEST COMPARISONS...
AND VERIZON RESULTS ARE ALWAYS WORSE THAN SPRINT AND ATT!!!
AS I AM TYPING THIS... MY SPEED IS DOWN FROM 3G TO 1XRTT, WHICH IS LESS THAN 10% OF 3G... MUCH SLOWER THAN AN OLD MODEM DIALUP!!!
    VERIZON 3G BROADBAND TOTALLY SUCKS!!!

Sprint and AT&T are the same if I had to choose I would go with SPRINT, why?
AT&T - you have to deal with all the iphone users hogging up the data on the tower.  All the complaints you hear in the news is not for nothing.
Verizon - well lets see they are the biggest so lots of people on in the evening.  That says it all
Sprint - They run at a higher MHZ most of their towers are fiber and not T-1.   While they do experience slowdowns its not as bad as the other carriers.  They are not the fastest but you can maintain a constant speed with them throughout the day and evening.
Tmobile -  They dont have the slow down issues I use them with my android and cradlepoint router in an emergency.
You can find out more about speeds by going to www.evdoinfo.com

  • Time-Capsule Network Speed slows down

The TC will work fine for about a week and then inexplicably begins to communicate at a very slow rate over the wireless network. If I cycle power on the TC,, it will resume normal performance for about a week, and then slow down again.
I've taken to monitoring the TC wireless speed using the airport utility. My airport devices will operate normally at about 54 Mbps and my PC clients at about 113 Mbps (I have Netgear N cards in the PCs that operate at about 108 Mbps). When the performance drops, my Mac devices will drop to around 5Mbps and the PCs will drop to 54 Mbps. Performance will continue to degrade until everything is running at 1 to 5 Mbps. I reboot the TC and everything returns to normal for another week.
Any thoughts as to what could be causing this?

Hi and welcome to the forums.
I'm not a wireless expert, but after having wireless networks at home for more than 5 years with Apple stuffI made some observations.
First, there might be issues with other networks in your neighbourhood. Many posts suggest that there should be at least 5 channels between wireless networks, e.g. 1 - 6 - 11. Set it with AirPort Utility.
Second, something called "noise" from other electronic equipment as microwave ovens and machinery.
Thirdly, having different types of equipment's and networks and speeds mixed together might not make the best network. We have the Time Machine set as working in the 5Ghz area with only the "n" protocol, while another device from the Internet Service Provider broadcasts in the slower bandwidth. In this way the slower wireless computers are running on their own net.
Fourthly, reception of the wireless network can be an issue. One older PC has been provided with an extra antenna, and that helped a lot with an nearly 100% increase in speed for that machine.

  • Office 2013 Deployment in a Multisite Environment

We want to upgrade our 200+ clients to Office 2013 but I have encountered 2 major issues.
The first is that we have multiple sites with slow network links (less than 512k) so I need to be able to install and update from the local file server. All our file servers have an install share mapped to I: that replicates from a central location every
day which is where the install files are located.
Problem is I seem to have to specify the server name for the configuration XML file to work. I have tried using the %LOGONSERVER% environment variable but this hasn't worked. I could create an xml file for each sit but I'd rather avoid it as sometimes we
move computers around and I don't want them trying to update from another site and flooding the WAN link.
The second is that as we have slow links and large inboxes I need to find a way to move the email from the users 2010 inbox into their 2013 inbox. When I update to 2013 it downloads them all again. I can export from 2010 then import into 2013 but this just
adds it as an additional inbox.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    1. That's ok we have already got a File server which seems to run DFS Replication in those slow bandwidth network connections sites.
But have you already move the Office installation source onto the file server which located in site 2? Why you need to configuration XML file currently? To avoid network flooding during the upgrading, please configure the DFS sync time  in the off-working
    times.
    2. In general, Outlook would pick up the existing OST file and reload it after upgrading. Please detail what's your upgrading steps and we could further help you.

  • More disk space from 128 GB Yoga 13 (I just found 3.8 GB for my use!)

If you have seen my previous post about only getting 101 GB instead of 128 GB and how I tried to combine my C: and D: and now have a total of just 97GB, I have an update and more questions:
        http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/IdeaPad-IdeaTab-Slate-Tablets/Yoga-13-Where-is-my-128GB-drive-I-just-see...
So, I saw a post about using diskpart to fix 2012 vintage Yoga 13 drive allocation issues and played around a bit last night.
After I messed up my computer by backing up all the crud in the d: drive to my main computer and deleting the partition and attempting to merge it to my c: partion, my machine looked like this:
    1000 MB Recovery Partition
      260 MB EFI System Partition
    1000 MB OEM Partition
96.91 GB NTFS (Boot, Page File, Crash Dump, Primary Partition
    8 GB Primary Partition
    12 GB Recovery Partition
My guess is that the last two partitions are the Intel rapid start and the onekey backup respectively.  I think when I lost my 4 GB that it grew the original 4GB Intel rapid start to 8GB.  Since I only have 4 GB of DRAM, I think 8 GB is a waste unless I swap out the memory card.
Anyway, The 12 GB recovery partition does not have a drive letter assigned so I played around with the diskpart tool (help actually listed the commands).  Below are the commands I executed.  Note that the sel part 7 would be sel part 8 for those who have not successfully or blew the merging of C: and D:.  The bottom line is to select the number of the last partition with 12 GB of space.  Then assign a drive letter to it so that you can access it through windows.
get command prompt (search for prompt) and enter the first three commands below
    diskpart
    sel disk 0
    list part
sel part 7  (Note: most folks would use 8 to get the last partition listed)
    assign
Now there is a D: with 3.8 GB free!  I should mention that as soon as I typed assign, the my Comuter explorer screen added a D: that said it has a 12GB drive with 3.8 GB free.  Very cool.  I added and removed some files in a new directory I created to confirm that it worked.  I believe that you should not do any OneKey backups to the local disk if you want to keep this space for your own files.  But I can't say for sure.
It would be part 8 if you did not already delete the D: drive.
I did the same thing for part 1 and now have a drive E: with 529 MB free.
remove to get rid of letter (to hide it again)
I should mention that there seem to be some hidden files in the last partition as all the individual pieces did not add up to the total used.
I tried adding a drive letter to the 2nd last partion (which I think is the Intel Rapid Start partition) but it would not allow that.  Same goes for the 3rd (OEM) partition.
The question that I have is that I am quite happy with the boot time and don't believe I will ever use the Intel Rapid Start feature.  Is it possible to uninstall that lovely software, delete the partition, format it and reclaim the space?  Or, will this cause me to just fowl up my machine?
I have performed the OneKey recovery using the little button next to the power switch trying to get my original d: back but the OneKey recovery, just restores the C: drive contents and does not mess with the partitions.
Off, hand it seems that since I backed up the drivers that were originally on c: that if I created a Window 8 recovery USB thumb drive that it would be possible to wipe the entire disk and do a "fresh" install with a single partition.  I think one person has done this but at this point, I'm afraid to break my one week old machine until I really need the space.  I have found that the read perfomance of the SD card is fast enough for storing working files, video and without a doubt MP3 files (very slow bandwidth needs).  So, it will be very cheap ($25) to add 32 GB of "disk" space and even cheaper in the future.
It would be great if someone who knew what they were doing could comment on my random thoughts as far as this is nuts or this is on the right track but you should do something different instead.
    Thanks.

I Installed another Msata 256gig drive and used Acronis true image and backed up my primary OS to an external drive. I immediately restored it to the 256gig drive and changed the BIOS to boot off of the 256gig drive.  Everything is working great but I am trying to figure out how to get rid of all those partition on the 128gig drive.  Window computer manager won’t delete the partitions and Acronis Disk Director won’t either.  Any ideas how I can dump those partitions?

  • After upgrading to ICS my Xperia mini (ST15i) hangs and reboot itself?

Ah I was very happy after getting official ROM of ICS but my happiness goes down very soon because now I'm facing many problems with my phone.
It is hanging most of the time at least once or twicw in a day, sometime hangs and reboot itself but sometime I have to estart it by remove the battery. When it hangs if my battery is at 90% and I remove the battery and put it back and restart it then it goes down to near about 70% or less.
Phone dial pad is very slow to open than 3rd party softwares. Back and Option key response very slow. I know this could be performance issue but this is too much.
However many apps goes to hang, mostley my browsers I wa using Boat and Dolphin HD browser and after upgrading I tries Chrome which also hangs. My phones battery drain so fast now also my phone heat too.
I tried to contact the support thorugh E-mail but still yet no reply so I'm here to ask this please help me guys. I have very slow bandwidth so please suggest me the good way to solve this problem. I don't want to downgrade but if its neccessary then I'll.

regarding the phone/dialer download Dialer One
regarding your battery life, you should check which apps are causing this
charge your phone 100% use it as you normally would then once it reaches 10%
settings > battery > take screenshots of this list an the graph, also tap on each item and take screenshots post them here
delete taskillers, antivirus, battery apps, ram apps as they slow down your phone, drain your battery and cause a lot of issues.

  • FLV videos not playing correctly in Captivate 6

I am running into an issue where my FLV video is not playing correctly when my Captivate project is exported out and saved to the web. The FLV video is about 20 mins long (~100 MB) and it is being streamed from Kaltura. The FLV video is inputted into the Captivate project as a multi-slide synchronized video across 27 slides. The slides themselves are imported from Powerpoint. The problem that we are running into is that the Captivate project and the FLV video play correctly when viewed with decent bandwidth, but they do not appear to play correctly for users with slower bandwidth. However, if a user views the videos independently of Captivate, they can view the videos correctly, even at slower bandwidth. I have tried hosting the Captivate files on several different webservers, including an LMS. But the issue continues and I'm searching for any type of answers that might help.
Thanks for reading and any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

    Nathan,
Your welcome, if that is the case, then can you try and insert the MultiSlide Video, you can insert the streaming video URL.
You can add the server to you computer as network Drive and then browser to that location, once you do that, the options to add the Video as Streaming can be chose and your Vidoe would remain insync with main playbar, users can play and pause content that way.
See if this can be implemented at your end.
    Thanks,
