E4200 Storage Disk vs.. Media vs.. FTP

I am new to USB storage on a router.  Is there anything that gives summary of a Disk vs.. Media vs. FTP setup on the E4200.  When would I use either or all of these.  I want a central point to storage music, photos & videos  for the household.  Also occasionally I may want to park files on the USB drive as well.  So how do I configure the drive and make it work to my advantage.
I have already set it up experimenting so I know the drive works, I know I can park files there, but what do the different services provide?
Thanks

The "disk storage" option which you are talking about lets you download and upload any file type to the drive from any or specific computers on your LAN.
The media server option let's you stream supported music, videos, and pictures to a "UPnP-compatible media adapter" (e.g windows media player, a PS3, etc).
The FTP option allows you to access any type of file from the internet or LAN (if you want). So this adds "portability" to the disk storage feature.
I don't work for Cisco. I'm just here to help.

New to Mac... I have Partitioned my MacBookPro with Dual Boot Partitions running M.Lion and S. Leopard and a seperate media partition.
How do I assign my storage to the MEDIA Partition once I am booted in either OS?
Can I place a folder on my desktop so I can read/write ALL my media to?

Why not? Make a folder in your media partition and put an alias folder (shortcut) on the desktop of each partition/ OS. You can right click on the folder in the media partition and click on "make alias".
If you want to direct your iTunes media to point to the media partition, google "move iTunes library to external disk" and follow the steps; the instructions should be the same for a seperate partition as it is for an external drive.

  • Satellite Z830 - recovery backup on USB storage disk

I need to do the recovery system backup of this Z830.
But unfortunately, the system did not recognize the usb storage disk for doing this recovery.
Obviously, the usb storage disk have plenty of space and work OK on this Z830.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance

I dont know what do you mean under usb storage disk but I can just confirm what PauPau wrote. You cannot copy recovery image on HDD and use it for recovery image installation.
Please open Users manuals and page 90. There you can find detailed description about creating recovery media. It can be used DVD or USB flash memory.

The main error in this position is thinking ANY sized SSD can be "storage"
Any Macbook SSD should be idealized as a working platform computer system, containing all your applications, documents, and weekly-use necessary files; and all media files such as ‘big-data’ (music/PDF collections/video/pictures), unless directly needed in the near future, should be kept off the computer and on external storage USB or likewise bare hard drives.
You cant do what you want without removing the internal SSD
Officially, it is not possible for an end user to upgrade the storage in any Retina Display MacBook Pro model after purchase

I have upgraded my OS into Mountain Lion and now I cannot see any net storage disks. may someone help me? thanks

    Hi kiwirudy,
I've had the same problem more than once since I started trying to download my 14 April purchase of OS X Mountain Lion.
I found a property list called manifest.plist in my ~/Library/Application Support/AppStore folder which had a Boolean property called failed checked. I unchecked it and afterwards I was able to resume my download.
Here are some steps I've found useful:
    Close the Mac App Store.
make a copy of the  ~/Library/Application Support/AppStore folder. For some strange reason the Mac App Store likes to just delete it in some circumstances, which will mean that one has to start one's download again from the very beginning.
Double click on the manifest.plist in one's ~/Library/Application Support/AppStore folder.
This should open it in Property List Editor.
Expand all the nodes (holding down the alt key and clicking on the highest collapsed node should do it.
Find a key called failed of type Boolean and uncheck it.
Save the manifest.plist and close it.
    Open the Mac App Store.
The red message "an error has occured" should now be gone and one should be able to resume one's download.
In the event that the ~/Library/Application Support/AppStore folder gets deleted:
start the download again (it will start from the beginning), pause it and close the Mac App Store.
copy your backup copy of the pkg file back to its sub-folder (it's a numbered folder in the ~/Library/Application Support/AppStore folder).
Open the Mac App Store and resume your download.
It should continue from where it left off.
This has worked for me so far. I'm holding my breath. Don't know if I'll still be alive when it's finished.

  • Use the Power Mac as a storage disk

    Hi
I am setting up a iMac to be my main computer and was wondering if I could use my old Power Mac 4,1 as a storage disk? If so what would I need to do to have this happen?

I successfully File Share OSXes from 10.4.11 to 10.10.3 or any combination thereof in either direction.

A MacBook will use Time Machine to make local backups so that when connected to an external drive it will backup a lot faster.
to disable this, you must use a command under terminal.
to locate terminal, do a search for it under spotlight (the magnifying glass on the top right corner), should be the first hit.
once under terminal, type the following text exactly:
    sudo tmutil disablelocal
    hit enter.
you will be asked to input your password, if you do not have a password, you will have to create one before performing this command. after entering your password, hit enter again and close terminal.
in a few minutes the space taken up by time machine should be cleared.

  • Access permissions to external hard disks and media players

I've recently purchased an iMac. I have a number of external disks and media players that when connected are not allowed write access. When I use the disk utility I cannot change the permission from read only. Whats the solution to changing them to read and write access?
    Thanks

    Hi Kieran
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
You can not write to them because they a formatted windows NTFS.
    See > http://www.macworld.com/article/51972/2006/07/ww_drives.html
If you want to use an external disk with both PC's and Mac's, you will need to re-format it MS-DOS/FAT-32.
If you wish to use them with only the Mac's, you will need to Format then GUID partition/Mac OS X.
    See > http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/partitioningtiger.html
    *+Proceed with caution when re-formatting disks+:*
    1. Before re-formatting any drive you will need to backup the current data on it to a computer or another drive, because re-formatting will erase all the data on the drive.
    2. Fat-32 has a file size limit of 4GB and will not allow single file transfers greater than 3.7 or 3.8GB.
    3. You may not be able to change the format or write to many media players without special software.

  • IPod only working as a storage disk

For some reason, my iPod no longer opens iTunes automatically when I plug it in, but opens up as a storage disk. How do I revert it back to opening iTunes when it is plugged in?

Connect the iPod to the computer. Open iTunes. When the iPod appears in iTunes go to edit-->preferences. Click the iPod tab. Make sure automatically open iTunes when iPod is connected is checked. If it is, uncheck it, click OK, and then go back and recheck it and click OK.
Also, make sure enable disk use is not checked.

  • New Storage disks added to san

    Hey all,
I have added a set of new storage disks to our san that is connected to our Netware boxes. The existing storage appears fine in remote manager. I have run scan all and scan for new hardware, but i can't get the new storage to appear under either of the qlogic cards.
Any suggestions as to what I need to do to get them to appear?

    More of my setup..
I'm running NW 6.5 Sp5 with 2 qlogic ql2300 cards. I have a 1 TB drive presented to the server, I think it's done right? The SAN is a IBM DS4300. It's set to LUN1.
Between the SAN and the NW server is a fibre switch, an IBM Total Storage 16M2. No changes were made to the switch.
There is an existing array set to LUN0 and that is working fine to the NW server.
I have run SCAN ALL on the NW server to scan all LUNs. I then go into NSSMU and do a scan for new devices. The new array is not shown, just the original array on LUN0 and the internal drive.
Any ideas as to what I can do to get the new storage array to be shown in NSSMU? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • Is there an ability to adjust the IOPS level/range that a storage disk can provide?

    O/S - CentOS 6.5
    VM type: Extra-small, 768MB RAM
I have an extra 20GB storage disk that was provisioned for a VM to function as a DBDATA disk. Spot testing I can tell this additional storage disk performs much better than the boot disk/drive (~2000 IOPS versus 120 IOPS) where my O/S is installed.
I searched around the portal and dashboard site, but I could not find a dial or slider switch where I could set set/tweak the IOPS settings for the attached storage drive.
    Questions
    1) Does anyone know if a configurable IOPS setting is available in the portal/dashboard area somewhere?
    2) As mentioned, this "additional" storage drive can perform much better than the boot disk (~2000 IOPS compared to ~120 IOPS), is there a reference for what the maximum IOPS are that these storage drives can deliver?

You could set IOPS on your VM. About this issue, I recommend you watch this video form channel 9 (http://channel9.msdn.com/Events/TechEd/NorthAmerica/2013/MDC-B345#fbid=).

Cannot update my phone as message comes through "updating to iOS 7.0.4 requires at least 610 MB of free space on your iPhone.  Please change your media sync options to make more storage available"
What media sync options?  Where are they ? How do I change them?

Afraid, this doesnt help.  I've already unselected about 100 iTunes, resynced, and I still get the same message about 610 MB needing to be deleted.
What is so magic about 610 MB as a number?
Is this anything to do with iCloud? I was on the free 20 MB offeruntil last month and then got downgraded to 5 because I could n't see the need for paying for extra Cloud space.   Is this the reason why?

If the user has R&W permission then you should be able to create a new folder.
Try to create a new folder using the web interface of the router and see if that works.
Open the setup page of the router and go to Storage tab. Click Edit on shared folder. There you will find option to create a new folder.
If that doesn't work then I think you can try to reset the router and reconfigure it.
Yes this works great.  I just thought it was possable to make folders outside the without having to use the routers storage config utility.   No big deal.
