E4200v2 - DHCP client list NEVER displays

As the most expensive and hyped "consumer router" at the local big-box stores, and after already returning a Netgear N600 that appeared to be defective, I had high hopes that this router would work properly and I could stop fooling with router settings and move on to real work. And I'll acknowledge that for a lot of folks this router will probably be fine. I didn't do any speed measurements or methodical testing, but it seems pretty fast and using it for more than three weeks it seemed reliable. However, it had several issues that were maddening and ultimately for me, unacceptable. Summarized as follows:
> The DHCP client list NEVER displays all the clients connected on my network, no matter how many times I look. These clients are actively transferring data, and I can download free programs from the web that report all clients reliably. Why is this so difficult??
> The logging feature is ridiculous - it often didn't log events that I knew had occurred, and even when they were shown, you would only see an entry if you checked the log very quickly after the event (some sort of "auto-flush" function that makes the whole feature pretty useless).

With reference to your post I would like to know that does all the client devices on your network runs on DHCP or some of them have static IP address as well? The devices which are running on static IP address will not be displayed in the DHCP client table.
Regarding the logs that are not being created on the router for any event that takes place could be because of the reason that you might be using another router or a gateway before your linksys router.
As far as your VPN issue is concerned please try to disable the firewall of the router and then try to connect to the open VPN device because this router acts like a VPN passthrough.     Dear forum
    I would like to keep an eye on my wireless network. I know this is possible from the airport util. by looking at the dhcp client list. however i would like to do this remote as well - while i'm at work or similar.
    So far the only way i can think of is to have a computer online at home with remote desktop activated - and then accessing the remote computer from work and through it look at the router.
    BUT is there any way to get access to the router direcly from my work?

    If you look at the AirPort Utility Advanced panel, Logging & Statistics tab, you'll see a setting for "Allow SNMP over WAN". SNMP is "Simple Network Management Protocol". That's supposed to enable the type of thing you want to do. Beyond that I can't help you, as I've never worked with SNMP software.

    If your devices are connected to your router then they should not have fixed ip addresses assigned by your ISP or by you. They should be set to get their addresses via dhcp from your router. If they have fixed ip addresses this is why they don't show up in the router's dhcp list, the router did not assign them dhcp addresses.

  • DHCP client list missing devices.

    I just bought a TC and is setup as my router. I have a pc connected to one of the ethernet ports in the TC, and it works fine. My problem is that the other peripherals connected to the other two ports on the TC are not working. One of he is a printer and the other is an X-Box console. In the DHCP client list I only see the pc listed.
    Does anyone knows why I can only see the pc and not the other two devices on the DHCP list?

    That is true, every other router I have used shows all of the DHCP clients. But reading the Apple documentation it is not clear that this is true for the AEBS. See "Designing AirPort Networks Using AirPort Utility (Mac + PC)" (direct PDF link).
    Page 57 has the following somewhat ambiguous statement "If you click “Logs and Statistics” you can view and export base station logs, and view wireless client and DHCP client information."

  • DHCP Client List on Extremes

    Can someone verify that the new square Extreme router does provide a DHCP Client List whereas the old dome Extreme does not? This seems so basic, really surprised if true.
    Tried IPScanner, appears to provide a list of devices that respond to Bonjour, helpful, but not a real list of all devices getting addresses from DHCP, didn't even show my Windows computers.

    I suggest updating to the newer AirPort Utility as it will still administer the older 802.11g base stations. You can get a copy for Tiger here: AirPort Utility 5.3.2 Tiger

    Hello,
    I recently set up my Mac Pro to act as a gateway and the setup has a AEBS acting as a bridge to all the other clients (dont want to buy a extra switch). I just wanted to check to see if the AEBS is the reason why my DHCP client list on the server only shows the AEBS and not other clients, wireless or wired. Is there a way to fix this issue without going to a switch? All connections on the AEBS is on the LAN side and the WAN side not plugged into anything.

    I made a cheat sheet with a list of my computers and wifi gear using the last 2 digits only.
    1. My Mac = 09
    2. Wifes Mac = D3
    3. Printer = 37
    etc., etc.....

  • WRT 160 N Router, DHCP client list has no clients

        In the DHCP client list under status there are no computers listed. And under the DHCP reservation list it only lists one when I refresh? I've update firmware and refreshed and even rebooted router several times.

    Do you have static IP addresses assigned on all workstations? In that case the DHCP client table might be empty.

  • DHCP Client List doesn't list VPN Users - 10.5.4

    When I had Tiger 10.4.11 running, it would usually list every DHCP client on the system. Including those outside the subnet in the VPN range. Now that we are running Leopard Server 10.5.4, client no longer appear in the DHCP client list under server manager.
    Thus;
    DHCP range; 192.168.2.1 - 192.168.2.147 - subnet- 255.255.255.0
    VPN range; 192.168.2.148 - 192.168.2.255
    I noticed I had to change DHCP clientIDs and change the printer machine names to get them to show up in the DHCP client list.
    Even if I modify the DHCP client ID on the VPN users machines and change the machine name, I still can't get anything to show up.
    Does the DHCP client list no longer list the VPN users?

    An additional note. When I VPN into the server, I no longer can access the clients via ARD like I used to under Tiger.
    Seems to gel that if the DHCP server and can see local clients over the gigabit network, but can't see the VPN clients that I also can't see the internal clients via VPN.
    AGGGH.

  • About my Dynamic DHCP Client List

    In my eH100 Network settings under Dynamic DHCP Client List it shows two hosts. My MAC address with no name and another MAC address with a name. Does that mean someone is using access through my router. Now it's only showing one host.

    What is a EH100? A DSL or cable modem or router with wireless capability? IF so, it is likely that somebody is "fare-jumping" wirelessly onto your network, if you have no security set up on your wireless.
    IF you currently are an open network, I would recommend a combination of configuring your wireless access point with WPA-PSK security plus MAC authentication. (I hear there is a better one than WPA, which is itself better than WEP, but neither my computers nor modem support any better than WPA). On my ActionTec DSL modem/router/WAP, this is set in Advanced Settings under wireless settings (to specify WPA) and a clearly labeled MAC authentication link for the MAC address list. For MAC authentication, manually add hardware ethernet addresses as found in each authorized computer's system preferences > network > Airport or Built-in Ethernet as Airport ID or Ethernet ID given in the form of xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx), depending on how they will be accessing your WAP/router/modem.
    FWIW, this actually would have probably been more fitting to post over in the networking forum.

    Hi All,
    I Configured WEC7 Device as DHCP Allocator and is working fine. 
    I am able to see the connected DHCP clients information in Registry under ConnectionSharing/Addresses.
    But for my application development I don't want to read the registry all the time to get updates of connected clients.
    Are there any other options (API) available to read connected clients info (IP, MAC, Client Name etc).
    And if i can register to some services for client connection status change notifications would be better.
    Do you suggest any better ways to get clients info other than reading registry?

  • DHCP client list empty on WRT310N

    This has happened all 3 times I reset my router to default settings.  I see the list of clients, no problem.  However, when I adjust the QoS for my desktop's MAC address, the client list empties, and from that point on, it stays empty, although 3+ clients are connected.  Removing any QoS settings won't alleviate my problem, either.  I have to reset to factory defaults again. 

    Have you tried to upgrade the firmware of your Linksys Router. If not then Go to website linksysbycisco.com/downloads.. .......insert model no of your router in serach tab......select proper version of your router........download the firmware file......save that file on desktop...
    Follow these steps to upgrade the firmware on the device : -
    Open an Internet Explorer browser page on a computer hard wired to the router...
    In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1...Leave the Username blank & in Password use admin in lower case...
    Click on the 'Administration' tab- Then click on the 'Firmware Upgrade' sub tab- Here click on 'Browse' and browse the .bin firmware file and click on "Upgrade"...
    Wait for few seconds until it shows that "Upgrade is successful"  After the firmware upgrade, click on "Reboot" and you will be returned back to the same page OR it will say "Page cannot be displayed".
    Now reset your router :
    Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds...Release the reset button...Unplug the power cable from your router, wait for 30 seconds and re-connect the power cable...Now re-configure your router...

    how many wireless clients/pcs can the router manage without any problem? ...
    I noticed that when we are in 3 or 4 wireless clients the connection is very unstable, slow response, connection drops.
    Is there anything i can do to improve this matter?

  • Macbook Pro showing old name in DHCP Client List

    When I originally set up my macbook pro, I gave it a name, we will say 'X'.  Since then, I've changed the name to 'Y', however whenever I connect to a wireless access point, if I login to the access point and list the clients, it shows 'X' as my host name.  What I have tried:
    System Preferences->Sharing and entered the new computers name
    Sysem Preferences->Network->Wi-Fi, clicked Advanced and set a Client ID under TCP/IP as well as changed my Netbios name under WINS
    I'm at a loss as to why 'X' keeps showing up as the client ID on wireless access points after I've changed it on the system.  There must be another location where that is stored.
    Short of doing a full file scan for 'X', does anyone have any idea where else I can look and change this on the macbook pro?

    Power cycle your dhcp server (router). The dhcp protocol retains ip address and computer information for reassignment to the same device whenever possible. Force the router dhcp router to reconnect and reissue a dhcp address by power cycling the router.

  • AirPort Extreme (n model) doesn't show all DHCP clients in client list.

    Hi all,
    Wondering if anybody can confirm or deny this occurrence. I noticed that when plugging DHCP clients into the ethernet ports, those hosts do not show up in the DHCP client list. They do appear to get a valid address and work fine, however. I still intend to test whether or not I can assign a static IP to the ethernet client MAC addresses, but I assume that will work fine as well.
    In my opinion, if this is confirmed it should be addressed as a bug (albeit minor). Otherwise I'm very pleased with the new Extreme, by the way. Other issues that I don't like are more a matter of convenience than necessity.

    Ditto to all of the above, but I've got another, maybe related, question.
    I have my HP printer hardwired to the router. It is set for a dynamic IP address, so the question of a static IP not showing up isn't the issue.
    My problem is that I can't get the client ID to show up in the list. The MAC address is there, the IP address is there, the lease time is there. But no matter what I reset, either on the printer or on the router, I can't get the printer name to show up on the list.
    If I pull up the printer in a browser window, it shows the name. I've even tried changing the name a couple of times. Nothing.
    No, it doesn't really matter, it still works fine. But it's annoying to me.

  • WRT400N - issues with brief disconnects and DHCP client table

    Hello,
    I recently bought a WRT400N to replace my (seemingly) dead WRT54GS. It worked great out of the box, and setup was quick and intuitive, just like my previous router. It came with firmware version 1.0.10 B19.
    I'm having two problems. First, while playing some online games, I'm getting brief disconnects every 2-3 minutes. It's usually just enough to make the screen studder (I'll get a "Connection Interrupted" message for a split second), and then it goes away. It's happening often enough where it's causing issues, though. My computer is connected directly to the router via CAT 6, and the only component that has changed since the issue started is  the router itself. To add confusion to the problem, when I do a tracert to something like Google, most of the hops come back fine, but I'm noticing it takes 4-5 seconds before it lists an IP address for any given hop, UNLESS a domain name is specified. The actual columns with the latency numbers are filled in quickly, but the IP address itself at the end of the line hangs for a minute. For example, the  final hop, "12    22 ms    24 ms    23 ms  od-in-f104.google.com [64.233.161.104]" is displayed instantly, but any hops along the way that just show an IP address, such as "11    27 ms    26 ms    25 ms  216.239.48.190" have a long pause before the IP address (bold) is displayed. Normally I would think it's a problem with the routers along the way, but the delay even happens before it displays the hop to my router's IP - 192.168.1.1. Very weird. I wasn't sure if these issues were related.
    The second problem is the DHCP client table in the router's web administration utility. On my old router, the DHCP client table always displayed all computers that were connected to the router (DHCP set to auto). With the WRT400N, I'm noticing only a few of the machines are actually showing up. They're all being assigned IPs without any issues, and they're all able to connect; they're just not showing up in the table. I often check the client table to see who's connected or grab a MAC address when I need to mess with QoS or access restriction, so the fact that some clients are missing is a bit annoying. The old router didn't have this issue.

    As you are facing this problem with the Wired Computer, then i think you need to change some settings on your Router. Once you login to the Router GUI, below the Setup tab you will find MTU, which will be set to AUTO,So change it to Manual and change the Size from 1500 to 1365 and click on Save Settings. Once you are done, now try to play the Games and check if you are facing the same problem or not.
    If still you face the same problem, then i think you need to Re-Flash the firmware on you Router.. Go to website linksysbycisco.com/downloads .........insert model no of your router in serach tab......select proper version of your router........download the firmware file......save that file on desktop..
