E450 CPU Problem?

Hi,
I got a warning message: fail-Master Disable for UltraSPARC-II.
And the output from prtdiag shows than one of the CPU has gone.
Is this a CPU problem?
Thank you.
Andry

That would be a good guess.
If it's not the cpu, then it's the DC-DC converter that's mated to that cpu module.
Either way, you need to replace hardware parts.
Go to the Sun System Handbook and get the E450's Service Manual.
( actually, you might as well get ALL the documentation for the system while you're there )

  • MS-6309 and CPU problem

    Hi
I have MS-6309 V2.1 (newest bios) and a regular Intel Celeron 933MHz. Recently I tried to upgrade it to Intel Coppermine 1GHz 256kB cache, but it was doing mathematical errors (random freezing, kernel error, different md5sums of the same file) (in any OS). MEMTEST went OK so I thought the CPU was bad so I tested it in my friend's mainboard and it was OK, so I tested my friend's CPU (the same, only little older release) in my mobo and it was doing the same errors.
So my mobo is bad or it doesn't have proper microcode for my CPU (which may be eventually newer than newest BIOS release) what brings me to point-> How can I update microcode in old AMI BIOS? MMTool and AMIMMDOS works only on newer bioses.
    Sorry for my english

So here's specifications of my old creepy computer:
    Mobo: MS-6309 V2.1 with BIOS v3.6
    RAMs: Apacer 128MB UNB PC133 CL3 + PQI PC-133 MS3828UPS
    CPU: Intel pentium III 1000/256/133/1.7V Q111A368-0941 SL4MF
    PSU: regular 300W
    HD: irrelevant
    RM: CD-ROM 54X read
To Frederik about windows: There never had been one (according to former owner) before I got it and there also has never been windows since I got it.
To Stu: I was looking for some old computer to be used as media-centre and webserver when I got this one for free from my friend. And it was beyond my expectations, cos I was looking for some 500MHz, 64MB RAM (which doesn't have problem playing 1400x1050 xvids and DVD's).
OS: Gentoo, Debian, GeeXbox, Xubuntu, TinyME, Sidux, and others..
Either they run from harddisk or CDROM they freeze or do mistakes in calculations (usually it means crashed program or kernel or programs do what they shouldn't). If you f.e. run md5sum with the same file 10x at least two sums will be different.
CPU temperature doesn't go beyond 40-45°C.
The CPU runs well in other mobos (with the same rams or not) and other 1GHz coppermines runs also wrong in my mobo (with my rams or any other rams). So i think it's either CPU problem or BIOS problem (old microcode or something else).
    sorry for my english

  • High CPU Problems With Screensavers and Flash Player - FYI

Upgraded my 1.42 Ghz PPC MacMini (1 GB RAM) to Leopard, fresh install and suffered high CPU problems as outlined in various other threads.
Fixed major 100% cpu and 100% FAN issue by removing The Weather Channel Screensaver - so have a look at your console system info and see if a 3rd Party screensaver is causing a problem, or if no 3rd party screensaver, try using a simply screensaver like Forest.
Safari/Netscape/Firefox also were using high CPU when a webpage was using Flash, I removed Flash Player 9 (latest version) and cpu load decreased dramatically.
    Go here for uninstall DMG
    http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_14157
Hope this helps someone else until there are fixes.

Just wanted to clarify that the Flash and Screensaver problem is still ongoing even after the latest QT updates as of Nov 07.
The Flash problems is with Flash images/code that use moving graphics/user input, such as those adverts you see where you push a button to punch Paris Hilton.
I think the overall problem is with the way QT/Core Image/Core Animation is different in Leopard compared to Tiger. As have now often witnessed iTunes just displaying the Cover Flow image area and nothing else (everything else in the application area is white) when going between applications, clicking on the iTunes icon in the dock refreshes the image okay.

  • 865Pe Neo2-V: Froze- no display- no beep. mb or cpu problem???

    motherboard: 865Pe Neo2-V
    cpu: intel p4 3.2ghz
    memory: kingston 512x2
    vga: ati radeon 850xt
The problem i'm having is this...
Everything was working fine and all of a sudden my computer froze.
So I tried ctrl+alt+del but didn't work so i pressed the reset button.
I was waiting for it to reboot, but i hear the fans running but no display.
So i thought maybe the monitor was the problem but
i tested it with a different computer and it's fine. and the hard drive too.
What i noticed is that after the computer starts, I don't hear the beep (once) that it's running ok and
proceeds with the actual booting with hard drive.
Then i thought it's the vga, and tested, but it's working ok.
I think it's between motherboard and the cpu...
So i decided to test the beeps, and I ran the comp without any memory, it didn't beep.
Tried without the cpu, didn't beep.
Could this be the motherboard problem? or the CPU?
If so (whichever one), why would this happen??
For anyone who knows this, please help me out.
    Thank you for reading..

    any help?
    anyone?
re-seat CPU,(ensure its mounted well, check it for damaged CPU pins, test it into another machine if its possible) apply new thermal paste(but not too much), clear CPU socket from any dust around. check all power cables. try barabone setup.(take board out of case too)
test with one of memory stick only in DIMM slot close to CPU socket, then Clear CMOS (ensure power cord are not connected to the PSU before proceed with Clear CMOS.)
    re-test.
if no go test it with different and better PSU. good PSU suggestion can be found here and above:
    https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=105635.msg783120#msg783120
if still no go, found a way to test CPU somewhere else to ensure its work. if CPU works must be failure board then.

  • Macbook cpu problem extreme frequent slowdown and subs performance problems

    Hello
Since summer 2007 we have been experiencing speed problems with one of our Macs a Macbook bought in 2006. Initially we thought it was just because we were asking too much of the computer. But unfortunately this is not the case. What happens is that while working normally (normal performance) with one or more applications, the computer starts to slow down to a near halt. You notice this because instead of for example opening a new window right away it slowly unrolls the window until it is open. At the same time the fan starts to accelerate and often the little color wheel appears instead of the mouse arrow. The computer is warm but not hot. Usually after a while the speed of the computer comes back to normal and the fan will stop turning at high speed. When checking cpu usage during such an "episode" most of the time cpu usage by Safari or Firefox Activity monitor indicates cpu usage by Safari and Firefox 100-110 % which strikes me as not being right . Quitting these programs seems (seems !) to return the computer to normal faster. The Apple store has replaced the memory, no effect, I did a total clean install of OS, updated it to the latest version of Tiger no effect. What can be the problem ? Is it the logic board as a whole or the graphics portion ? Or is something blocking the vent and it does not cool sufficiently? We are at a loss what to do.
Any advise would be appreciated. Right now all I can think of is to bring the computer in to an Apple Care Center probably resulting in a high bill even though in retrospect this problem started before the expiry of the Apple warranty.
    Many thanks for any help.

    Hello thanks,
We use websites like Wall Street Journal online, viamichelin.fr, yahoo, NCBI. I may have given the wrong impression that it only happens with internet use, it also happens with iMovie or Nikon capture NX but I guess we just notice it more with internet use because this computer is mostly used for that plus e-mail.
    H van Es
I took a look at those sites. I noticed several ad/content displays on online.wsj.com which probably used Flash or Java animation/video. Yahoo! typically has tons of animation features (especially stuff like falling snow on holidays), and viamichelin.fr has a bunch of animated ads. NBCI looks to be the nastiest of the bunch.
If your fan is turning on from having multiple websites like those on, I'm not surprised.

  • Macbook Pro CPU problem - idle % consistently low, please help!

    Hi,
I've had my Macbook for about 8 months and never had any problems with it. Recently it started running very slow - freezing, mouse moving slow, typing response slow. I tried some solutions I found online (installing all updates, resetting NVRAM/PRAM, reindexing Spotlight, verifying disk permissions, entering purge in terminal). None of these worked. I checked Activity Monitor and the problem appears to be with the CPU, since every time the computer is running slow the Idle % is under 10%. Out of an abundance of caution, I uninstalled two Chrome plugins which were the only things I've installed in months (Adblocker and Disconnect.) I don't use any games or any other apps - pretty much all I do on my laptop is browse the internet on Chrome and use MS Word. I also have plenty of disk space, so I know that lack of storage is not causing this problem.
The only thing that has worked, at least temporarily, is shutting down, connecting to power source, and holding ctrl option shift power for 10 seconds, then turning back on (this was suggested in another thread on these forums.) The first time I did this it worked like a charm - my computer worked fine afterward, with the idle% back up to well over 90. However, it started running slow again the next day. I repeated the key process and again it seemed fine. Then again it slowed.
At this point I've tried the same solution several times and it doesn't seem to be helping anymore. Upon startup the idle% use in Activity Monitor is anywhere between 4% and 10%. The kernel_task is showing around 350% in Acitvity Monitor.
I have a very important test coming up at the end of the month and I'm studying 16 hours a day, and can't afford to be away from my computer for long. Is there ANYTHING I can do to fix this from home, or does it need to be taken into Genius under Apple care? If so, will they have to send it out and replace the hard drive, or will it be an easy in-store fix?
Any information would be appreciated! I am about sick to death of Apple products (my old first gen Macbook Air had to have its hard drive replaced twice and its screen replaced once.) If I can't find a solution I may have no choice but to up and buy a PC.

The kernel is using excessive processor cycles. Below is a partial list of causes for this condition.
    Throttling
When it gets high temperature readings from the hardware, the kernel may try to compensate by interrupting the processor(s) to slow them down and reduce heat dissipation. This condition can be due to an accumulation of dust, to high ambient temperature, or to the malfunction of a cooling fan or temperature sensor. You might, or might not, see messages like the following in the Console window:
    SMC::smcHandleInterruptEvent WARNING status=0x0 (0x40 not set) notif=0x0
The timestamps of those messages (if any) indicate the times, since the log was last cleared, when a processor was being throttled due to high temperature.
Note that if the problem is caused by a faulty sensor that reads too high, there may be no actual overheating.
The Apple Hardware Test, though not very reliable, is sometimes able to detect a bad fan or temperature sensor.
    Using Apple Hardware Test
    Encryption
Transferring large amounts of data to or from an encrypted disk image or FileVault volume may put an extra load on the kernel. If both the source and the destination are encrypted, the load may be doubled. If you transfer data from an encrypted disk image on an encrypted partition to another such image on another encrypted partition, the load may be quadrupled.
This issue probably doesn't affect late-model Macs with an Intel i-series, recent Xeon, or later processor. Those processors support hardware-accelerated encryption. You can determine what kind of processor you have by selecting About This Mac from the Apple menu in the menu bar.
    Installed software
User-installed software that includes a device driver or other kernel code may thrash the kernel. Some system-monitoring applications, such as "iStat," can also contribute to the problem. You can test for this possibility by completely disabling or removing the software according to the developer's instructions, or booting in safe mode (with the shift key held down at the startup chime.) Note, however, that disabling a system modification without removing it or booting in safe mode may not be as easy as you think it is.
    Corrupt NVRAM or SMC data
In some cases the condition has reportedly been cleared up by resetting the NVRAM or the SMC. I can't confirm.

  • Conflict between Logic Pro and external device error in Logic Pro X./cpu problems

    hi Logic users,
    using a MacBookPro 15 inch Retina, 2,7 GHz intel Core i7, 16 GB Ram, OSX 10,8,5, Logic X 10.0.4.
i am wondering if you can help me out with the following problem i cant solve:
when starting logic x with a not too big arrangement, lets say using one third to half of cpu, i open u-he plugin Diva and the cpu is going up on full range and the following error appears: "sample-rate 39299 (number always changes) reconized. Check conflict between logic pro x and external device"
as external device im running a VirusTi and as audio-device Apogge Duet. when dis-connecting both devices, i have the same problem.
putting the sample buffer up to the highest rate, doesnt change anything.
same arrangements on friends computers dont show that problem, so it has to be something wrong in my set up.
    anybody has an idea?
would be much appreciated for your help,
    thanx-

Have you used Diva's preset Accuracy system to reduce CPU load?
    accuracy
Click on the Main button at the bottom of the window. To the right of the Master section are two selectors called Accuracy and OfflineAcc. In the current version of Diva these are global parameters i.e. they remain fixed across all presets, per loaded instance:
draft........CPU-friendly, but FM will sound rough and resonance is primitive i.e. NOT zero delay! fast......... Fine for older computers and/or when you need more polyphony in acceptable quality great...... The best compromise between quality and polyphony on high-power computers divine..... Top-quality zero delay feedback filters... but can your computer can handle it?
OfflineAcc only has two options – same or best (i.e. divine in the current version).
Some host applications may have problems rendering to audio at the selected accuracy, but the
better ones include an “inform plug-ins of offline rendering status” or similar.
I typically work in draft mode and then switch to Devine or best when freezing the track or bouncing the entire project...

  • Logic X with rMBP SSD 16gb RAM insane CPU problem.

Hi, just got a brand new MacBookPro retina SSD 2.3 Ghz Intel Core i7, 16 gb RAM. The reason I bought this was because I was told it shall solve efficiency problems when working with LogicPro. Well, it didnt. It acts 10 times worse than my older MacBook. A few instances of native synths and plugs completely freak out my CPU. Just having Logic open eats up 56% of my CPU. On my older MacBook (with 8gigs Ram and a regular HD) I could run huge sessions with no CPU spike ever!!
This is insane, why is it happening? I updated to the latest version of LogicProX, my processing threads in Logic are set to 4. Buffer size set to minimum an I still get annoying latency and unecceptable CPU crackle - like when I was working FL studio on a crappy PC a decade ago... All that, on the latest "bad-***" laptop there is out there.... Is there any hope to work professionaly with this machine, or did I just waste a lot of money?
P.s. I use a Metric Halo 2882 firewire interface connected via Thunderbolt. I tried to listen to the session after swithcing to built-in, same problems occure...
    H e e e l p  ! ! ! !
    Thanks : (

my processing threads in Logic are set to 4. Buffer size set to minimum an I still get annoying latency and unecceptable CPU crackle -
    If you didn't mistype.....
You have set up things completely the opposite to what you need for your setup.... and so, to help prevent the issues...
    Go to LPX's audio prefs... and try the following;
Your i7 has 8 cores not just 4.. (4 real and 4 virtual) so set according...
Having the I/O Buffer size set to minimum increases the loads on the system, not decreases.. so change that setting... If you have it set to 32, increase it to 64 or even 128 or 256 samples... and test with each change to see how you get on....
Also what do the actual latency figures show.. (Just below I/O buffer size...) after each change...
Finally, check what you have set the Process Buffer Range to.... If it's set to small.. set it to medium and test... and then to large and test.... and again see how you get on.

  • Nokia N8 CPU Problem? Bug? Glitch? Please read!!

Hi there, I just discovered a... problem? or a bug? a glitch? whatever. I discovered a problem on my Nokia N8 about it's CPU speed.. I accidentally saw on the application X-plore that my N8's CPU is set to just only 192 MHz! I was schocked when I saw that since the CPU of Nokia N8 is said to be at 680 MHz. I rebooted my N8 to refresh it. After I rebooted my N8, I did not run any app and started X-plore right away and check it again. To my surprise, it's still set at 192 MHz. So I posted about this thing on a forum and asked if it's the same as their N8's. So someone replied and said his N8 was also set at that speed. So I started to worry.
Other Nokia N8 users please also check yours. All you have to do is install X-plore, just find it over Google.

Battery definitely comes first. But it doesn't mean it has to be 2 days standby time when processor speed is not enough to process mail or starting cam. Think how superior Nokia will be if battery life is a bit below this with a better processor speed.
If you asks to anroid lover or iphone lover what will come first in their are processor speed & phone material quality, where Nokia both falls behind. Though all other options are still great than iphone or anroids.
    hmmmm.
My Sister had the HTC Desire when it can out. And though she loved the phone, she couldn't stand the fact that when she went out with it, not only did she have to think about where she could charge it, but also had to carry a micro USB cable to work just for that purpose too.
She's since upgraded to the Galaxy S, and though the phone is much snappier and brighter, her main wow factor was............." at least I don't have to carry the USB lead anymore!!"
So in my estimation, I can live my so called "mediocre" Symbian^3 N8 speed phone, than the worlds fastest dual, triple or quad core phone which will no doubt have only half the life anyway.

  • Oracle 9i Lite and CPU problems

Are there any known problems with 9i Lite clients on Celeron or other CPU models ?
I know there were JVM related problems with one of the Oracle Universal Installers (been there) but this problem occurs when running msql to access the polite db.
    eg.
    msql system/x@polite
    msql system/x@polite:polite
    msql system/x@jdbc:polite:polite
All return a [POL-3013] bad database or invalid password error. Suspect that MSync does not work for the same reason.

I also get the POL-3013 error message when trying to connect to the polite database as well as my own db. I can setup the user-dsn and run CREATEDB with no errors. I can even validate the db and no errors are reported. But I cannot use msql to connect to it. It used to work on my previous Win2k-machine with P4 cpu, but will not work with XP and Celeron.

IMovie 4 is freezing since I started using Tiger. old and new movies, short and long as though the cpu can't keep up. after about 32 seconds every movie. very seldom catches up. When I burn a dvd the movie plays fine on the computer. Any ideas what this is about? The Apple store "genius" tells me it is just the Imovie program. I need to buy $1200 of IStudio to correct. The kernel is using excessive processor cycles. Below are some possible causes for the condition.
    Throttling
When it gets high temperature readings from the hardware, or low voltage readings from the battery of a MacBook, the kernel may try to compensate by interrupting the processor(s) to slow them down and reduce power consumption. This condition can be due to:
☞ a buildup of dust on the logic board
    ☞ high ambient temperature
    ☞ a worn-out or faulty battery in a portable
☞ the malfunction of a cooling fan, a temperature sensor, a voltage sensor, or some other internal component
Note that if the problem is caused by a sensor, there may be no actual overheating or undervoltage.
If the computer is portable, test with and without the AC adapter connected. If kernel_task hogs the processor only on AC power, charging is causing the machine to heat up. That behavior may be normal for some models. CPU usage should drop when charging is complete.
Apple Diagnostics or the Apple Hardware Test, though not very reliable, is sometimes able to detect a fault. For more thorough hardware testing, make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.
If nothing is wrong with the hardware, then whatever you can do to improve cooling may help.
    Installed software
User-installed software that includes a device driver or other kernel code may thrash the kernel. That category includes virtualization software, such as Parallels and VMware, as well as most commercial "anti-virus" products. Some system-monitoring applications, such as "iStat," can also contribute to the problem. You can test for this possibility by completely disabling or removing the software according to the developer's instructions, or starting in safe mode. Note, however, that disabling a system modification without removing it or testing in safe mode may not be as easy as you think.
    Corrupt NVRAM or SMC data
Sometimes the problem is cleared up by resetting the NVRAM or the SMC.
    External display
Connecting an external LCD display to some MacBook Pro models while the lid is open may cause this issue. If applicable, test by closing the lid or disconnecting the display. You might get better results with a newer LED display.

  • Photoshop CPU problem with my wife

    Help! If you can...
I have Windows XP, divided into two accounts, mine and my wife's.
Yesterday morning, I used Photoshop 8.0 CE on "her side" to handle some big big (700MB - big for my PC) images.
Because Photoshop kept being unable to resize etc. due to lack of available "scratch disk" I went to preferences and increase the memory allocation from 50% to something else (which I can't remember and, since Photoshop on her side is no longer opening, I can't check). Worked well after that.
Anyway, off to work, then my wife calls - she can't open her email, and can't read her webmail, and is it because of those big images I put on her desktop?
Last night, I made several discoveries:
    1) Photoshop on her side can't initialize because "preferences file has been deleted"
    2) if I do shift+control+alt, Photoshop on her side says it's building new preferences, then tells me it can't initialize because "preferences file has been deleted"
    3) if I copy my Photoshop preferences file from my profile to hers, same result as 1) and 2)
    4) Outlook Express opens and immediately freezes (takes 99% of the CPU)
    5) So I installed Thunderbird for the email, imported everything from her Outlook express profile... and it immediately froze
    6) Firefox opens and takes more time to freeze (then its plugin-container.exe takes 99% of the CPU)
    7) Internet Explorer almost makes it, but if I click on "add to favourites" (and, I'd suppose anything else menu-related) it freezes (99% etc)
    7) Adobe Reader and ImageReady all behave normally (no memory problems)
    8) on my side of the PC, everything is super-normal
My wife says it's all my fault. I plead innocent, saying two big 700MB jpeg files on her desktop (now deleted...) couldn't possibly cause the problem.
But I did increase the memory allocation for Photoshop, and its preferences file has disappeared, and it won't initialize, so... I'm not sure.
Anybody know what might have happened?
(I googled the symptoms, Photoshop + preferences file + 99% CPU and xp + CPU 99% + only in one account, but got nowhere.)
I would appreciate any advice, even if Photoshop isn't guilty.
    thanks
    TT

Is your wife's account a privileged account?
Do you both have full control over the files in the scratch area?
If both of your accounts have administrative access, then when you do set file permissions, make the Administrators group have Full Control.  That will grant access to both of you.

  • MacBook2,1 CPU problem

Hy! The problem is, that one of my cores is always being used 100% by the system, the other core behaves normally. "kernel_task" is eating up to 105 (think it's %) of the cpu. I got an average 70C temperature, with the fans aorund 6200rpm. Is this normal? Anyobody any ideas? Thanks!

Try resetting your SMC and PRAM.
