E450 SPARC 64-bit

Hi All,
This maybe a stupid question but i still would like to know the answer.
We have a E450 with dual SPARC 302mhz CPUs, can this server run 64-bit software? We are trying to upgrade to Oracle 10g but it only supports 64-bit.
Thanks for any input.

Yes. 64-bit.
The UltraSPARC-II cpu modules are native 64-bit architecture.
Solaris 7 and newer would install a 64-bit kernel on that platform by default.
Solaris 8 and newer do not have 32-bit-only kernels,
but have a 32-bit compatibility innate to them, that they can run
well behaved 32-bit applications in their 64-bit environments.
Match your version of your database software to the
appropriate version of Solaris.
E450 in the Sun System Handbook:

Edit:
You can find many items of information on this topic
with a quick Google search, keyword ultrasparc-ii.
For example, there's this Sun press release from November 1998:

  • Oracle 10g installation in an SPARC 64 bit Solaris 10 server

    Good morning,
I'm trying to install Oracle 10g Enterprise Edition in a server with Solaris 10 as operating system. When I run the oui, the prerequisites part is passed but the installation gives me an error telling that the installer can't write in the /tmp directory. Nevertheless, I have writing grants and space enough in that directory, in fact the installer writes the installAction.log in this directory. So I don't understand which can be the problem?
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance.
    Regards,
    Mabel

It could be you don't have enough free space on the tmp dir.
    Check this point from the
Oracle® Database Installation Guide. 10g Release 2 (10.2) for Solaris Operating System (SPARC 64-Bit). Part Number B15690-02
If you determined that the /tmp directory has less than 400 MB of free disk space, then identify a file system with at least 400 MB of free space and set the TMP and TMPDIR environment variables to specify a temporary directory on this file system:
    1. Use the df -k command to identify a suitable file system with sufficient free space.
    2. If necessary, enter commands similar to the following to create a temporary directory on the file system that you identified, and set the appropriate permissions on the directory:
    $ su - root
    # mkdir /mount_point/tmp
    # chmod a+wr /mount_point/tmp
    # exit
    3. Enter commands similar to the following to set the TMP and TMPDIR environment variables:
    Bourne, Bash, or Korn shell:
    $ TMP=/mount_point/tmp
    $ TMPDIR=/mount_point/tmp
    $ export TMP TMPDIR
    C shell:
    % setenv TMP /mount_point/tmp
    % setenv TMPDIR /mount_point/tmp

    Hello All,
I have a SunSolaris SPARC 64 bit OS on which i have the 32 bit Cognos 8.4.1 installed.
I now wanted to install a 32 bit Essbase client on this server.
can anyone please let me know if there exists a 32 bit essbae client which can be installed on the SunSolaris SPARC 64 bit OS ?
    Thanks you in advance.
    MS

I will asume the latest version of the essbase client
"EPM System Installer installs both 32-bit and 64-bit Essbase Client on a machine with a 64-bit operating system."
Once it is installed you may need to update the environment variables to point to the 32bit client.

    2. Does this message get stops on applying of patch # 8477122 ?
    Thank you,

There are a number of known issues with the 10g agent on Solaris and patches are available. I assume you are running the 10.2.0.5 agent since you reference patch 8477122. If this is a brand new agent installation i would start with applying the latest PSU update which contains many related fixes. If you are still getting the error after this, open an SR with Oracle Support with your specific error message.

  • When will 11.1.0.7 will be available for Solaris (SPARC) (32-bit)?

    Hi
Does any of you know when 11.1.0.7 for "Solaris Operating System (SPARC) (32-bit)" will be available for download on http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/tech/oci/instantclient/index.html ?
The reason for my question is that 11.1.0.6 contains a bug (at least on Solaris) causing it to reserve approx 180M swap for each client started!

    Just became available on http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/tech/oci/instantclient/htdocs/solsoft.html

  • 10.2.0.3 on solaris 9(Sparc 64 bit), patch 5257399 needed or not?

We are going to install oracle 10.2.0.3 on a Solaris 9 (Sparc 64 bit) box. According to Note 406472.1, Mandatory Patch 5752399 is needed for 10.2.0.3 on Solaris 64-bit and Filesystems Managed By Veritas or Solstice Disk Suite software. Our system is not on SAN, only local disks, so I'm sure we don't use veritas file system. But I'm not sure if we still use Solstice Disk Suite software. Sun said that in Solaris 9, Solstice Disk Suite is renamed to Solaris volume manager and it is bundled in Solaris 9. Does this mean Solaris 9 is using Solstice Disk Suite by default and we have to apply patch 5752399?
How can I verify which file manager we are using? (Our sys adm is not quite sure).
If we apply the patch no matter we really need it or not, what impact to the system?
    Please advise. Thanks!

I found by issue "mount -v" that our disk slices are
UFS type. So we don't need apply patch 5257399,

  • [Answered] List of patches for Solaris 10 SPARC 64 bit!

    Hi All,
Installation document for 10g Release 2 (10.2) for Solaris Operating System (SPARC 64-Bit) does not mention anything about patches required on Solaris 10 (there is a list for Solaris 8 and 9).
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/install.102/b15690/pre_install.htm#sthref110
Can I safely assume that the installation of Solaris 10 contains all the required patches in this case?
    Thanks,
Edited by: Satish Kandi on Nov 19, 2008 10:21 AM

    Hi Satish,
I did not have access to ORACLE metalink so could not able check the doc which you reffered. But Checked the ORACLE installation doc, I suppose that is the required patches for 8 and 9 which you have to make sure of on Solaris 10.
Other wise wait and see for other inputs too.
Hemanth might reply back some thing.

  • RFC SDK for Solaris 8 on SPARC 32 bit

I see that there is no support for Solaris 8 on SPARC 32 Bit. Is this true or has support been discontinued.
Any suggestions or pointers are appreciated.

    Hi Aju,
With SAP NetWeaver 7.1, the SAP NetWeaver RFC Library only supports 64bit for SUN. You can find more information you can see the SAP note 1025361 and at http://service.sap.com/connectors --> SAP NetWeaver RFC Library.

  • Difference in core application of "SPARC 32-bit" vs "generic" WebLogic10.3?

    Hi guys,
I really need your urgent advice on the topic above. My question is that is there a difference in the WEBLOGIC 10.3 CORE itself between these two version mentioned? My opinion think the only determining factor is the VM used that would determine if it would be a 32-bit WAS and 64-bit WAS.
From my understanding both are same with some minor differences as follows :-
    1) The SPARC 32-bit version is bundled with JDK1.6.0_05 but the "generic" version requires you to specify the JAVA_HOME
    2) The SPARC 32-bit version is a .bin installer which is a UI installation for SPARC environments but the "generic" version is a .jar file which is a general archive-based installation (not UI based) which can work on all platforms
    3) The SPARC 32-bit version has the BEA_HOME path already set based on the installation but the "generic" version require the user to set it manually
Currently, I am using the SPARC 32-bit version but pointing to a 64-bit JDK and executing it with the -d64 parameter. So far there were no problems except that the I ran to PermGen - OOM issues since the MAX_PERM_SIZE was set to 128M. After increasing this to 256M, there are issues so far.
With this could I confirm that it's safe to use a "SPARC 32-bit" version which is configured to use a 64-bit JDK, -d64 parameter, and increased MAX_PERM_SIZE asa opposed to the "generic" version?
Thank you very much my friends.

How do the keys compare?  If the hashcodes come from the object, does the calculated hash differ between environments?
Why code the app so that it cares about the order of the hashtable?  If you care about order, then a hashtable is the wrong thing to be using.

  • CF9 w/ Solaris 10 (Sparc, 64-bit): Problems with mod_jrun22.so

    Hi
We're running a Solaris (Sparc) box and installed Apache 2.2.16 and ColdFusion9 on our system. When starting ColdFusion the first time, the shell script "apache_connector.sh" installs the mod_jrun22.so (must be the successor of mod_coldfusion.so) and adds the required section in the httpd.conf file just fine. (well, after fixing the script... ^^)
The problem arises when starting Apache next time:
httpd: Syntax error on line 414 of /usr/local/httpd-2.2.16/conf/httpd.conf:
    Cannot load /opt/coldfusion9/runtime/lib/wsconfig/1/mod_jrun22.so into server:
ld.so.1: httpd: fatal: libgcc_s.so.1: open failed: No such file or directory
Apparently, this module was compiled with gcc, which we didn't install on our Sun system.
Does anyone know whether there's a module available which doesn't depend on gcc libraries under Solaris?
So far we've compiled everything with Suns compiler Sun Studio 12.0. The reason behind this is that we're using CFX-tags and our shared library uses  C/C++ and embedded SQL for Oracle 11g (yes, we're old school ^^). And since Oracle 11g officially only supports Sun Studio 12.0 when using embedded SQL, we're trying to compile everything with this compiler.
Sure we could install gcc (or at least a runtime-component containing libgcc_s.so.1), but I'm wondering now whether we'll run into problems later when using our C++ library which was compiled with Sun Studio 12.0.
Could anyone shed some light on this?
    Thanks!
    Daniel

We have our EBS 12.0.6 on Sun Solaris SPARC 64 bit. There are few hp printer (hp laserjet p2015dn) configured with our application and they are working fine.
Now we have to add one more printer but ( hp laserjet p2015dn) is not available now.
So please suggest the hp laserjet printer available for Solaris 10 Sparc 64 bit.You already have the same type of printer configured and it is working properly, so I would say it is supported.
What is the difference between the two printers configuration?
Can you print from the OS to the new printer?
What do you mean by "not available now"?
    Thanks,
    Hussein
