E4500 Disk Board question

I have an E4500 with an external A5100 attached. I have a question about the disk board. prtdiag shows following:
Detached Boards
===============prtdiag output =========
Slot State Type Info
3 disabled disk Disk 0: Target: 10 Disk 1: Target: 11
Can someone help me diagnose diagnose the problem? I have 2.10 running on the box. Thanks.

Talat,
I am having a bit of difficulty understanding your question.
Is it because PRTDIAG uses the work "disabled" ????
If that is the question, then there is no problem.
That component status was discussed in these forums, a long time ago.

Use the forum search function with keyword <i><u>diskboard</i></u> (all one word).
One of the links in that earlier discussion thread attempts to point to a reference in the SSH.
That link is now available ONLY if you have a Sunsolve login account (with service contract).
<u>This link to another site</u> will provide most of the same SSH info for the diskboard.

  • Older disk utility question

    I can't find my installation disks for 10.4. The most recent one I can find is 10.2
    I ran verify disk on Onyx and it told me the disk needed repair and that I needed to run disk utility from the cd.
    1. is there any difference between the 10.2 disk utility and the newer 10.4 version that might corrupt the system?
    2. I ran multiple tests with Tech tool pro and passed everything. Is there something Disk Utility does that tech tool pro isn't doing?

    Wow, you do your research in addition to answering everyone's questions! Apple should be paying you. I'll offer some personal comments, which I'm sure you're familiar with. I'm not a Mac specialist; but as one very experienced system programmer once said to me, 'All operating systems are basically the same'.
    I discover things by using theory, then discover them wrong in an 'Ars Technica' article, because Mac changed something. The Wikipedia is essential for puzzling terms and even basics.

    Printing
    My preference has always been HP inkjet printers, if only for their level of support in CUPS for MacOSX and GNU/Linux. Using their inks & papers, I can spend my time on research rather than fiddling with ICC profiles. (I think I had four drivers, three CUPS PDD's and the standard one.) Rather than change my 'presets', I created a different virtual printer for duplex B&W, 4x6 glossy color, &c. Nice for OOUI users.
    Debian GNU/Linux has an HP control panel for fine adjustments, ink levels, etc. There are better printers, I'm told; but HP is Mac & Linux friendly:

  • Some specific Disk Setup Questions

    Alright, I've read several articles, but I'm still slightly confused.  It's not too much, but just a simple matter of what difference an HDD and an SDD would make without any form of RAID.
    So, let's take the following:
    C: Samsung 256GB 850 PRO Series SATA III 6Gb/s Solid State Drive
    for OS and Programs
    D: 3TB Barracuda SATA 6Gb/s 7200RPM 64MB Cache Desktop Drive  OR   Samsung 1TB 850 PRO Series SATA III 6Gb/s Solid State Drive
    for Source Media and Projects
    E: Samsung 128GB 850 PRO Series SATA III 6Gb/s Solid State Drive
    for Pagefile and Media Cache
    F: Samsung 128GB 850 PRO Series SATA III 6Gb/s Solid State Drive  OR   Samsung 256GB 850 PRO Series SATA III 6Gb/s Solid State Drive
    for Preview and Exports.*
    So, this is what I may be considering as a disk setup.  I don't have too much more money to spend than possibly what I have listed above, and I'm trying to determine what would be the best for After Effects and Premiere Pro, the two programs I'd main.
    *One thing to note is that I would NOT keep the exports on that disk.  I would move them over to something else I already have for storage.  So, it's basically a matter of how much space should I have on that drive for preview files.
    So, here're my questions:
    For the D: drive, what difference will the HDD I have listed make (remember, Ae and Pr would be READING from that drive) compared to the SDD?  See, I would prefer more space with the HDD, and like to spend less money, but if the other drives are all SSDs, will that HDD slow it all down?
    How big are preview files supposed to be?  I've had bad experiences with them, due to my lack of knowledge at the moment, but I don't know; just for 1080x1920 HD video, what's a general size the preview files should be per minute?  (I also use several layers, so that could affect the size as well.)
    If the preview files are generally fairly small when set up correctly (as in not a 40GB file per 3 minutes of 1080by1920 HD), could the E: and F: drives be run together in a RAID0?  Would that offer advantages over running them separately?  Or would the difference be negligible?
    If it's better to run the E: and F: drives separately, should I use the 128GB drive for Previews/Exports or the 256GB drive?  I know that if I did RAID0 I'd have to use the 128GB.

    Yes, it's true; I have no experience building systems at all.  However, I'm still unclear, entirely, on the whole HDD vs SSD thing.  Thank you for your information, but I'd still like to clarify some things.
    I'm mainly trying to understand more about the performance aspect of all this.
    Let's take the previously revised version and compare it to your suggested one.  I'll say what I think based upon what I believe to be correct, but I'm obviously missing some information here; that's where I want somebody to correct me.
    Version 1:
    C: Samsung 256GB 850 PRO Series SATA III 6Gb/s Solid State Drive
    for OS and Programs and possibly Pagefile
    D: Samsung 1TB 850 PRO Series SATA III 6Gb/s Solid State Drive
    for Source Media and Projects
    E: Samsung 128GB 850 PRO Series SATA III 6Gb/s Solid State Drive
    for possibly Pagefile and Media Cache
    F: Samsung 256GB 850 PRO Series SATA III 6Gb/s Solid State Drive
    for Preview and Exports.*
    *Take note, I'm putting the exports on a separate drive I already own and deleting them from the drive I originally wrote them to.
    VS:
    Version 2:
    C: Samsung 256GB 850 PRO Series SATA III 6Gb/s Solid State Drive
    for OS and Programs and pagefile.
    D: HD RAID 0 array: 6x 1TB Barracuda 64MB cache RAID 0 array (x99 boards have LOTS of SATA ports)
    So, let me get this straight here.  Correct me if any of the following statements are wrong.  I'll also have some questions associated with them.
    Version 2 will be SIGNIFICANTLY slower than Version 1.  I'm assuming this because Version 2 is both an HDD and SATA instead of SSDs with SATA III.  However, I'm unsure of this since RAID 0 is being used in Version 2, unlike Version 1.
    Version 2 will be MUCH riskier than Version 1.  I'm assuming this because it's RAID 0, and if one of those six drives fails, all the data is lost.  (However, since the programs are on C:, they will stay safe, along with the operating system.)
    Version 2 is ALSO riskier due to the fact that I'm using HDDs instead of SSDs.  Or am I wrong, are SSDs riskier than HDDs?
    Under Version 2, I'll have 1TB total to put source media, projects media cache, preview files, and exports on, while keeping the pagefile, OS, and programs on C:. (even though it's six disks)
    This is what I'm understanding right now.  Please correct me if I'm wrong, or point out other suggestions.  One final thing, as well, that I'm also unsure of.
    Now, I used to use Premiere Elements 11.  When I would create preview files for, say, a 13 minute HD video, the preview files (in total) would be under 1GB or just a little more.  What about Premiere Pro CC makes the file sizes so different?

  • Repair Disk Permissions question...

    I keep getting this after I repair disk permissions :
    "Permissions differ on "System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.usbmuxd.plist", should be -rw-r--r-- , they are -rwxr-xr-x .
    Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app/Contents/Resources/OwnerGroupTool" has been modified and will not be repaired.
    Group differs on "private/etc/cups", should be 0, group is 26.
    Permissions differ on "private/var/spool/cups/cache/rss", should be drwxr-xr-x , they are drwxrwxr-x ."
    Can someone please tell me what this means?...and especially the Warning: SUID...something modified and will not be repaired?...is this something I should be concerned about?...
    Wasn't sure where to put this question...if it's in the wrong place please tell me and i'll post it elsewhere...
    Thanks for help in advance...

    Hello Todd Kopriva
    Your video on Disk Drive Optimization is excellent. I went out to purchase (2) Raid-5 (8 TB) units. I had a question regarding Read Files going to one Disk and Output Files going to another. Can you give some examples of what type of Output Files you are talking about. Iam fairly new to Adobe CS5.5 Production Premium. I am presently usiung Premiere and Encore as well as After Effects. I just want to make sure as to what files will be going tomy Output Raid Drive.  I am thinking that one of them may the file created when you export out of Premiere wo Media Encoder.
    Thanks for the help and keep up the Tutorials.

  • Replacing T510 hard disk - 2 questions...

    Hello All,
    I have a T510 with 320Gb hard disk. I want to replace the hard disk with something with more capacity. I have 2 questions:
    Will this void my warranty - I have 500+ days left
    Can I take a complete copy of the hard disk and have all my applications and settings work exactly as they did on the old disk?
    Thanks in advance,
    James
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Just as The Dude says.  I swap my drives weekely in my T510.  I use Acronis True Image and create Rescue Media on a Thumb drive.  I boot to it and clone my internal HDD to an external eSATA drive.  That takes 8+ minutes.  I then swap drives and clone from the external eSATA to the new internal drive.  When done, I remove the thumb drive and boot to the new drive - now exactly a duplicate of what is on the eSATA external.
    This was, I have two complete backups of everything - and when I travel, I carry the "reserve" HDD in a small neoprene bag.
    If you use the Ultrabay adapter, you can clone drive to drive internally.

  • Quadra 650 Flashing disk with question mark?

    When i boot the Quadra 650 about 90% of the time it boots straight into a flashing image of a floppy disk with a question mark on it. Have tried putting the last used disk into the drive in case it didnt eject properly but that does not work.
    The rest of the time it goes straight through to the OS no probz, is the hard disk about to fail?
    Any ideas how i can fix this ancient beige box? Its running a middling version of System 7.
    Thanx

    I suspect the hard drive is failing. If it's the original HD it's about 15 years old. Most HDs fail before that age. Have you heard any clicking or other strange noises?

  • RAID with Disk Utility question

    I've setup a RAID array in disk utility for an external SATA NAS that I have. The Silicon Image Si3132 drivers are not working for Snow Leopard (the SATARAID 5 drivers) so I've installed the base non-raid drivers for 10.6.
    I'm using Disk Utility to setup the RAID for now until I get updated drivers from SI. Here's my question:
    Let's just say that my Mac Pro one day decides to die and I have to rebuild a new OS on the machine. I will then have this external drive where I've configured a software RAID with Mac OS X. Will I be able to rebuild this RAID and recover the data, or will I lose all of the data if the Mac needs to be rebuilt?
    The external enclosure has its own controller, but these silicon image drivers do not seem to want to work as they are kernel panicking.
    Will I be able to recover the RAID config with disk utility if I rebuild the machine? My thinking is NO

    You have four internal hard drives; ability to boot from FW or USB, and I would include TimeMachine and clone (Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper). Some WHS NAS servers also support TimeMachine and SuperDuper, but I would have local backups. Two minimum.
    I would not rely on SI or RAID.
    And all you need to boot from, and I'd have at least two, is a basic 30GB partition for Mac OS: a working copy of your system as is, a copy of last version installed also, AND, one "emergency" boot partition for disk maintenance and repairs.
    Then use NAS as second line of backup for your data, disk images, etc.

  • Mirroring Disk Drive Question.  Using SVM for Disk Mirroring.

    Hello,
    I am trying to do mirror in solaris 9 using Solaris Volume Manager. I have total 0-7 disks
    4 5 6 7
    0 1 2 3
    Drive 0 and Drive 4 = Boot Drives
    Need to Mirror following drives.
    Drive 1 and Drive 5 = Need to mirror
    Drive 1 was mounted on: /prod1, /prod2, /prod3, /prod4, /prod5.
    Drive 5 was mounted on:/prod16-----/prod20
    Then i have umounted both drives and then using format command to equalize the parititions.
    Then
    I have done following steps.
    metadb -a -f /dev/dsk/c1t1d0s7
    metadb -a -f /dev/dsk/c1t5d0s7
    2)
    metainit -f d100 1 1 c1t1d0s0
    metainit -f d101 1 1 c1t5d0s0
    metainit d0 -m d100
    metattach d0 d101
    3)
    # newfs /dev/md/rdsk/d0
    newfs: /dev/md/rdsk/d0 last mounted as /prod16
    newfs: construct a new file system /dev/md/rdsk/d0: (y/n)? y
    4)
    # mount -F ufs /dev/md/dsk/d0 /prod16
    Now, target 5 is submirror with target 1 mirror. I was wanted to do /prod1 but some reason it showing /prod16. How can i change this to /prod1?
    OR
    2nd question: do i need to mirror each drive vice verse?
    for example:
    metainit -f d102 1 1 c1t5d0s0
    metainit -f d103 1 1 c1t1d0s0
    metainit d1 -m d102
    metattach d1 d103
    Let me know.
    Thanks
    Adeel

    I do it a little differently, as follows, which I gleaned from http://slacksite.com/solaris/disksuite/disksuite.html
    Create state replicas on slices 6 & 7 (any could be used but we usually use 6/7)
    metadb -a -f /dev/dsk/c1t0d0s6
    metadb -a /dev/dsk/c1t0d0s7
    metadb -a -f /dev/dsk/c1t1d0s6
    metadb -a /dev/dsk/c1t1d0s7
    Initialize submirrors for root slice 0 on both drives, and create one-way mirror between metadevice d0 & first sub-mirror
    metainit -f d10 1 1 c1t1d0s0
    metainit -f d20 1 1 c1t1d0s0
    metainit d0 -m d10
    update root entry in /etc/vfstab
    metaroot d0
    Initialize submirrors for swap slice on both drives, and create one-way mirror between metadevice d1 & first sub-mirror
    metainit -f d11 1 1 c1t0d0s1
    metainit -f d21 1 1 c1t1d0s1
    metainit d1 -m d11
    Initialize submirrors for /var slice5 on both drives, and create one-way mirror between metadevice d5 & first sub-mirror.
    metainit -f d15 1 1 c1t0d0s5
    metainit -f d20 1 1 c1t1d0s5
    metainit d5 -m d15
    Edit /etc/vfstab
    add these lines to /etc/vfstab
    /dev/md/dsk/d1 - - swap - no -
    /dev/md/dsk/d5 /dev/md/rdsk/d5 /var ufs 1 no logging
    REBOOT server
    Attach second half of mirrors to allow two drives to synchronize
    metattach d0 d20
    metattach d1 d21
    metattach d2 d25
    I hope this helps.

  • GUI Bulletin Board Question

    Hello,
    I want to produce a simple GUI application that mimics a bulletin board. Where there would be a GUI that people could insert a message, and I could allow others to view the past messages and possibly allow some filtering as to what they see.
    I want to go from the GUI window to a text file to hold the past messages. After the text file I will probably move up to a DB, but for now, I think it is a good starter application.
    I am having trouble with the IO class, because of the so many ways to read and write data, and was hoping someone may give me some guidance as to the best way to handle the IO, (which classes) or point me to a tutorial where they are reading a line at a time, and possibly putting them into a collection and then showing it in a GUI.
    I know that is kind of a large question, but any assistance to get me started would be helpful, and then I can refine my questions as I begin building my project.
    Thanks for your time,
    Scott

    http://www.javacoffeebreak.com/java103/java103.html
    and
    http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/essential/io/index.html
    I used the above links to come up with the above code to write to a file:
    try {
    FileOutputStream out = new FileOutputStream("SearchTableFile.Dat"); // Output file name
    PrintStream p = new PrintStream(out); //Create a stream to write to the file.
    for (int i=0; i<SearchTableFileData.length; i++) {
    p.print(SearchTableFileData); //write data stored in SearchTableFileData Array
    p.print("\n"); // write end of line character.
    // try and catch are error handling
    } catch(IOException ioe) {
    System.out.println("Error: " + ioe);
    To read the file back into the Array I have:
    try {
    DataInputStream in2 = new DataInputStream(
    new FileInputStream("SearchTableFile.Dat")); // Input File Name and Stream
    SearchTableFileData = new String[SearchTableFileLines];
    line = in2.readLine(); //reads first line
    SearchTableFileLines = 0;
    while (line != null) {
    SearchTableFileData[SearchTableFileLines] = line;
    SearchTableFileLines += 1;
    line = in2.readLine(); //reads next line
    in2.close();
    } catch (EOFException e) {
    } catch(IOException ioe) {
    System.out.println("Error: " + ioe);
    Hope this helps. The file reading routine has some variable that are declared elsewhere in the code and I didn't think it was necessary to explain all of them.

    First Question - When I ran PPBM5, I only had the OS SSD Drive C: and one WD Velociraptor 10k Drive D:, so I put the project on D: and followed the instructions and submitted the result. Now that I have the RAID 0 Drive E:, I don't see how, per the benchmark instructions, to take advantage of the multiple drives that I have by splitting up media, scratch, export, etc. It looks like everything must reside on one drive, or the VB script that collects the stats can't find what it needs.
    Secondly, when I ran the benchmark again, I moved everything over to the RAID 0 Drive E: and it didn't seem to improve the results at all. Per CrystalDiskMark, I'm getting about 190MB/s Read & Write on the Single WD Veloc 10K (Drive D:). CrystalDiskMark shows 357MB/s Read but only 175 MB/s Write on the RAID0 Drive E:. Is this asymetrical Read/Write speed normal, or am I missing something obvious in my setup?
    Any suggestions or tips to get this PPr noob on the right track would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks again for everyone who contributes to this body of knowledge. And a special thanks to Harm and Bill for putting together the benchmarks.
    John
    Edited to add: I am aware of the inherit risks of RAID0. This system is not in "production" yet, and if the entire box went up in smoke, I have everything backed up in multiple other places. If the collective wisdom indicates that I don't have enough disks to make RAID worthwhile at this point, I'm perfectly happy to ditch the RAID and use the disks individually. In either case, I'm quite particular about backing up critical data and have procedures in place to make sure everything is protected.

    John,
    To be accurate, in the overall ranking your system is at rank # 154, but in the CS6 ranking, your system is at rank # 36.
    It is a nicely balanced system. See below:
    All the scores are around the upper quartile, Q3 and - not surprisingly - the Disk test is the relative weakest link, but of course that can be attributed to the single disk when testing. The cheapest and quickest way to further improve your results is by overclocking. Maybe you can reduce some overhead by diligent tuning, setting unneeded services to manual according to the Blackviper list and reducing processes at startup, but nothing more comes to mind with your hardware, unless you are willing to spend a lot more on disks and a dedicated raid controller.
    You have a well performing and balanced system that ranks #3 among non-overclocked systems.
    I can only guess that this is caused by the rapid depletion of the cache memory on the disks, causing the write speed to reflect more of its real physical speed. It could also be influenced by fragmentation of the disks. When I use Crystal Disk Mark on my array, I get results like:
    In my case I have, next to the 64 MB cache on each disk (21 of them), 4  GB of dedicated cache on the controller. That makes a difference.
    BTW, how do you like the Magnum M8? I have the TH10 and consider it the best chassis I have ever seen. Like to hear your opinion about it. You may have already seen this, but if not, look at Intro Part 1

  • Disk suite question

    Hi,
    I'm a newbiee regarding disk suite, and I am trying to mirror a 36GB drive using this application. This drive was already loaded with data and partitioned in different ways. My question is this: can I still use disk suite to mirror this disk without loosing any of the data already loaded on the disk, or should I better set up a manual mirror.
    Any comments and suggestions will be greatly welcomed.
    Regards,
    C.

    Hi
    The short answer is yes to the first part of your question. Not quite sure what you mean by setting up a manual mirror ( something to do with command line or GUI perhaps ? )
    To be on the safe side, create a set of one way mirrors on the 36Gb disc partitions ie
    metainit d30 -m d31
    where d30 is your metadevice and d31 is a metamirror consisting of a partition of your disc containing the data.
    Then on a new disc, create a second mirror and attach this to d30. This way you can be sure you
    you don't wipe out your data with a mirror of a blank disc.
    If in any doubt back everything up before you carry out disksuire operations.
    regards

  • Macintosh IIci - disk with question mark

    I recently acquired a Macintosh IIci.
    Upon boot, it displays a folder with a question mark in it.
    My other computers are all PC's, but I managed to create an image of Disk Tools 7.5 on floppy.
    This gets the computer to boot.
    When I get to the desktop, it shows the hard disk drive and I can browse it, which means the HDD must be working.
    I ran the Disk Rescue utility on the HDD.
    I ran both the Verify and Repair options, and they complete successfully.
    After rebooting without the Disk Tools floppy inserted I still get the question mark.
    Is it possible to fix this without reinstalling?

    Hi,
    Is there anyway to download the OS from Apple's site to a PC and copy the files to floppies that way?
    Normally, it is possible to copy each of the nineteen downloaded System 7.5.3 .bin files to a PC-formatted 1.44 MB diskette, but only providing that the Mac has the ability to read PC disks (the PC Exchange control panel installed and active, or a separate Apple File Exchange program). One does not alter the .bin files in any way until on the Mac (where StuffIt Expander is used for the decoding).
    In your case, since the Macintosh IIci does not start up from its hard disk, another method has to be used. Via a Mac disk utility (such as TransMac), a Windows PC would be able to write directly to Mac-formatted 1.44 MB floppies (which can be read in the IIci). Some Mac disk utilities can decode MacBinary (.bin) and/or BinHex (.hqx) internally in connection with the file copying.
    I have tried downloading several of those files on my PC, but cannot successfully create disk images that my Mac will read...
    Please note that the System 7.5.3 files are not "normal" disk images. The files are to be transferred to the Mac's hard disk (plain copy). Once the .bin has been decoded, each file is part of one large disk image. All decoded files (one .smi and eighteen .part) have to be present in a common folder. Upon double-clicking on the first file (.smi), the image will mount. The installer will be found inside. Disk Copy is not used with these files (nor is any other disk image utility).
    It is a good thing to have a sector-copied and bootable Network Access floppy (here), which (if absolutely necessary) can be created via a PC disk image program.
    In order to free the floppy drive for transfers, you could try to drag-copy the system folder of the Disk Tools floppy to the hard disk (for a temporary operating system).
    Before doing anything of the above, it might be worth checking (while having started the Mac from the Disk Tools) whether a complete system folder is on the hard disk already (it must contain at least a System suitcase and a Finder file). Also, do try to reset the PRAM.

  • Basic System Restore disk(s) question

    Hi
    I'm working on a client's 1GHz eMac, which originally came with 10.2, but which I recently wiped to install TIger. It now has 10.4.11. I'm trying to restore the original "extra applications" (principally World Book) but am having problems, both through the restore process and through Pacifist.
    I have the "eMac Software Install and Restore" DVD, a grey disk with a disk image and one blob under it. I don't have any other disks - should I? When I run the "Install Applications & Classic Support" package, it installs the System Restore utility, which launches, but then asks me to insert the disk with a picture of a disk image and a single blob under it ... which, I thought, was the disk currently in the drive...?
    OK, that didn't work, so ... I try Pacifist v.2.5.1, choose Open Apple Restore Discs, then "Software Restore - Classic and Third-Party Software". Pacifist attempts to load the disk images, but on almost every one gives a warning "The disk image you are opening may be damaged and could damage your system." If I click Yes on all, I get a list of packages to install ... but on attempting to install any of them, get an error talking about a missing directory in /tmp.
    Does anyone know what the issue might be? Is there more than one "Software Restore" DVD for the eMac?
    thanks!
    Matt

    To (sort of) answer my own question, I navigated in Terminal to the .images directory on the DVD, copied the WorldBook.dmg file to the desktop, opened it and manually copied the files and folders to their respective locations. It seems to work OK. Not sure why the installers were having such a hard time.

  • DC Input Board Question

    I have a 500 mHz iBook G3 that needs a new DC input board, so says Apple. No biggie, I know where to get the parts. My question would be is it difficult to replace? I have taken apart Mac desktops before, but never a laptop. Has anyone replaced it themselves before?
    Thanks so much in advanced!!!!:-)
    Rachyl
    PS...I was reading a post from Ronda I believe about shimmying something in the notebook to keep the video card from seperating from the logic board. Can you post that again?

    It's not very easy, but not as hard as replacing the hard drive. Find instructions here:
    http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/50.16.0.html
    and here:
    http://www.powerbooktech.com/knowledge,name-Power-Input-Board,type-6.htm
    You don't need to worry about the shim fix. It's only necessary if the graphics chip is coming loose from the logic board and causing display issues and/or system freezes as noted on the iBook Logic Board Repair Extension Program FAQ page. Otherwise, don't worry about it.
