E520 Screen Failure

I have an E520 - very rarely used. When using it today, the screen went fuzzy and then appeared to lock. TRied re-booting etc but the same thing continues to happen. Connected an external screen and all is well!
So I can use it as long as it's connected to an external screen  - not really portable any more!!!
Is this likely to be a screen problem or will it be a video card problem? If so does this machine have a separete video card or is the whole thing for the bin?

This is good to hear. I am now on my third Zen, First I had a Zen Creative M, the screen died in about a years and one month. Then I got a Zen Stone, (figuring I'd get a new screened Zen later) but didn't miss the video feature that much..screen died in (again) one year..this time almost to the day. Looking through a jeweler's loop I could see a small micro-crack in about the middle of the screen..just like you, player worked fine but I had no clue where I was or ect. So then I got a Zen Creative..the screen was dead out of the box, luckily I was able to return it. I am also finding that almost no stores in my area carry the Creative line anymore. Since I'd spent the money at the store, I tried a mosaic, the only other product they had..it works, but has far less capacity than i wanted and I am less than happy I'll need to get accessories like a carry-case seperately.
This is the lsat time I purchase a Zen.. I regret that, because the reason I love the Creti've line is for the Zencasts.
This screen issue seems to be "Creative-wide" according to several big-box retailers I spoke to and they all recommended I get a different brand. I am very sad about the whole thing and disappointed in creative for cheapening the screens.

  • IMac Screen Failure

    Hey,
I was just wondering if any of you are experiencing screen failures as noted in the link below? If so, is it the aluminum iMacs, or is it the white ones?
    http://www.macnn.com/articles/07/11/30/imac.screen.failure/
    Thanks!!

    Hi autiger
Which iMac do you have and are you having any display issues?
I don't believe it can be jinxed, so I'll do a little bragging here. My 17" Early Core Duo w/Apple Care purchased Jan. 21 2006 is great and has no gradient light/dark, no dead pixels and only a very very small backlight bleed. The sRGB and Adobe RGB (1998) profiles were OK, but the display seamed a little washed out. After more than a few tries, and some good advice from Barbara B and others here I was able to set a new profile that is much richer than any of the factory supplied profiles.
All display manufactures and computer system will have there share of issues, some more that others. I have had more than a few Apple's over the last 20+ years without a single hardware problem. I do have to admit though, that with the all-in-one Intel I bought Apple Care for the first time ever???

  • Ipad screen failure

My bought my Ipad 15 months ago (Ipad New) and has recently started a tendency for the screen to suddenly flicker, a bit like an old TV which loses vertical hold only much more rapid. I can turn the device off by holding down the usual power down buttons and things start off again normally but the problem is appearing with increasing frequency. This problem has appeared since I upgraded to the new IOS 7 about 10 days ago. Does anyone have a solution to this other than replacement?

My iPad does this sometimes, have you dropped it before?
Anyway, to get rid of this screen failure you take your iPad case off if you have one on and smack the back of your iPad.
It may seen that you're doing harm but you're actually fixing the glitch!

  • Kernel Panic & Screen Failures

I've just had two identical failures in one day on two separate Powerbook G4's running Tiger. There was a kernel panic while playing World of Warcraft, and now the computers' screens cannot be activated. I hear the hard drives spinning, but the screen never comes on. The Apple light on the back of the lid does not light up, the sleep light does not work - in fact, the sleep function does not seem to kick in when the lid is closed.
My wife's G4 failed yesterday. She was playing WoW, and she reported several kernel panics. Finally her machine failed to boot correctly at all.
Today, I tried to get it working, employing all the usual methods. I suspected some type of hardware failure. We gave up, she pulled out her old iBook and I played a little WoW on my G4. While simply checking my in-game mail, I got a freeze/kernel panic. I rebooted and the screen stayed blank - precisely the same symptoms as hers.
These are identical 12" Powerbook G4 1.3 GHz models with 867 RAM (factory-installed) in each. We're on an Airport network and in separate rooms, and not plugged into the same power source.
I reset PRAM, reset the Power Manager - no luck.
I get startup chimes (even the second chime for the PRAM reset) and I can hear the drive working. The system is coming up, but the screens and lights are not working for some reason.
I can boot the machines into Target Disk mode and access the hard drives via this iBook, so the system seems intact. On the affected machines, I can press the Volume up/down keys and hear the audio sound cues. Brightness keys have no effect.
It would really seem to be a Power Manager issue, as if no power is reaching the screen or anything in the lid. I reset the Power manager to no avail....
Two screen failures on identical machines under the same circumstances less than 12 hours apart? That's one heck of a coincidence... is anyone aware of a known issue similar to this?
    Powerbook G4 12"   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    No, this is not it.
I too today expienced a Kernel Panic while playing WoW. This only happened before about 4 or 5 freezes within the game which ended up having to be reset with the powerbutton pressed for 10secs.
This happened, as I said, about 4 or 5 times, while connected to external monitor and without. This has only ever happened to me today. I reinstalled WoW. Nothing. I thought it was a temperature overheat so monitored the temperature with iPulse, it heated to 55.3 degrees celcius, one fan kicked in and it crashed.
    I then used GioFX's HD 3d screensaver.
The computer crashed within minutes. What causes these crashes?! It is something to do with the GPU's 3d rendering, but I can't see why it happened today... the only thing I can think of is heat damage, it has been hot the past few days (30 degrees and more ambient temperature) and the laptop's fans have been working full tilt for 2, 3 hours and more while I play.
I am lucky, as my PB is able to be used (as long as no graphics are intense) but it is, in effect broken.
I need a response quickly, my guarantee with the seller is running out soon, do I need a GPU replacement or don't I?
This happened while playing World Of Warcraft 1.11.2(5464) and attached to an external monitor, keyboard and mouse.

  • Macbook Air 11" 2012 screen failure?

Wondering how many others have had problems with screen failure on this particular model?  I purchased march of 2012.  I read elswhere that they were having issues with displays that were not Samsung brand.  I just had to pay to replace at 16 months; 6 months of of which no use.  I am not a high user of machine.  I was really disappointed with the attitude of "oh well you did not buy the extended warranty?"

  • 2010 27in imac screen failure

my 2010 27 in imac screen has failed, right half of screen grey shadow, dark, i note that this has been a problem in the past, seems that apple ireland are not concerned? any opinions or suggestions? seems that there are major reliability issues with imac
extremely disappointed with product and apple support.

Your are missing the point. Yes, there will be the occasional Mac that has a display failure.. Yes, there will be a number of LCD displays that fail out of the millions of Macs that are assembled with LCD displays. And yes, techs will be seeing those occasional display failures over the wide array of Mac models upon which they work. But there are a number of companies that make LCD displays for Apple with the various Mac models that exist. And sometimes there are different companies making the displays for the same Mac model. These are the random, occasional display failures that can be expected with every computer manufacturer who assembles massive numbers of computers; Apple, Toshiba, Dell, Sony and on and on.
But the point is that the link that I gave you points to a consistent mass failure of displays on the same iMac model, assembled in the same factory, over the same time period with displays from the same manufacturer. That doesn't exist for your iMac. If it did we would see folks posting about it here in large numbers, just as we did back in 2006 and 2007, which we are not.

  • Touch screen failure

I bought my Xperia z3 in December in Orlando but I live in Brazil.  And when I came back I detected a failure on a lane of my touch screen. I already contacted the Brazilian technical support but they can do nothing because the warranty is not international. And if I send to the American technical support they can not send it back to Brazil. So did I lose my money? I can not believe it. Does anyone have an idea?

Sorry to hear that, but the warranty only apply in the country the phone was purchased, also you could ask if you could pre-pay the shipping cost to send it back to Brazil.

  • Screen failure, need some technical information

I have the lenovo y510p sli version. Last night while browsing the internet, the screen suddenly went black (the pc did not shut down, just the screen), and I got a burnt metallic smell. I turned off the laptop and removed the battery. I went to test it after the fact, the pc boots, however the led screen seems to not be backlit now. I can see the lenovo logo slightly if I angle it right, but it as if there is no "backlighting" on the screen. I know for a fact it is not a software issue. I ordered a replacement led screen. My question is whether the entire led controller board is built into the led assembly, or if there is a separate control for the screen that is built into the motherboard that may have caused the failure.

  • X220t bizarre screen failure question

Just yesterday after a reboot my screen on my x220t tablet (with windows 8 installed) stopped dispaying anything.  Right now I have it hooked to my HDTV through the display port.  But here is where it gets weird:
The laptop panel backlight stil functions and I can use the blue function keys to raise or lower the backlight brightness.
The wireless and HDD access icons on the bottom of the panels bezel still function.
    the touchscreen itself still functions.
Like I mentioned above the display port still functions.
I'm guessing the panel itself has died or the connection between the panel and the MB/laptop itself has failed.
Right now I'm trying to figure out where to start and what the most likely failure is before I crack it open.  I've got experience fixing IBM, Dell, HP, and a few other brands of laptops so I'm not worried about not being able to fix it myself, the main thing I need to do first is try and iron out what has failed so I don't have to take shots in the dark with which components to replace.
If anyone has any suggestions I would very much appreciate them!!

Do you have a warranty? Usually, unplugged cable yields a white screen. Yours sounds like a failed panel

  • Touch Screen Failures

Apparently, the touchscreens on the iPhones are starting to fail for a lot of people. Mine failed yesterday (the bottom 1/4 stopped responding) so I took it into an Apple store and they said they'd replace it in 1 to 5 days. At my store, they said they're starting to get a bunch in that are failing and when I searched on the 'net I see a lot of reports but couldn't find any official acknowledgement by Apple as to the issue.
Does anybody hear have anything definitive about touchscreen failures and how Apple plans to address them moving forward?

Max is the NI interface for all the drivers. It may be a specific driver that is causing problems, perhaps NI-VISA. I would try installing things one piece at a time. Might want to start by uninstalling everything so that you start with a clean system. First install LabVIEW with no drivers at all. See if the Micro touch screen still works. Then try installing NI-DAQ. Install each of the drivers you need one at a time. If you don't need something, leave it out.

  • Wifi/sound/screen failure

    Hi,
when i booted my comp today (hp dv6 1338ca), after i chose the user to log into, the screen became darker (process occurs after each restart/shutdown/unplug ac and battery and press on the power for 30 sec) before i logged in (in the stage of writing the pass), sound doesnt work (red on the computer panel), wifi doesnt work (even though it is blue on the panel), and win7's start looks different (like the old win versions).
Any idea why / how to fix it?

I saw your post regarding the myriad problem you are having with the dv6. From what you have described it sounds like it might be a hardware issue with the wifi, screen and sound all going. Here is an HP document Testing for Hardware Failures there is a section on using the HP UEFI Diagnostic Tools. Run the System Test – Extensive Test to check practically everything.
I would also advise using the System File Checker tool because these issues could also be connected by a problem in the operating system. This tool will scan your operating system for corruptions.

  • 24" iMac screen failure

In the past few weeks the screen has gone black while using. You can still see a bit of a light behind it so the machine isn't turning itself off, just the video going to black. A few times we even got a red screen with vertical black lines, but now it just goes black. Rebooting with the power button gets us back up and it goes fine for a day or so before it does it again.
Apple store "Genius" says it might be $185 video chip, but much more likely $600+ video display. Any ideas out there?
BTW, bought machine and 6/08, hard drive failed 7/09 which cost $300 to replace, mouse and keyboard have both also been replaced. I love my MAC, but finding a hard time buying into the argument that they are better built than the average PC. This thing is a money pit.

The Genius is right, it could be either, they will not know until they physically check it out. Have you run the Apple Hardware Test on the iMac's original install disk?
There are millions of Macs out there that never have an issue and run for years, because generally they are made well. Occasionally there is one that has a problem. And of course you know that Apple Care would have covered all of this for about half what you paid for the HDD, until the 3rd purchase anniversary in 6/11.

  • Screen Failure - Macbook Pro 17 inch (2.16 ghz)

    Hi!
About 7 months ago the LCD screen on my 17 inch MacBook Pro (2.16ghz) started to do odd things, such as: display odd shapes in the lower 3/4 with lines and colors that changed according to whatever image was currently trying to be displayed. Initially, the screen would correct itself, however this is no longer the case. (I will admit, I lightly tapped the corner of the display, which did help for a time)
The screen, still the same lower 3/4 of the entire screen, malfunctions after any jostling for an extended amount of time. When stationary for a day or so, the screen will correct itself, and is in fact working at this time, and is also connected to an external monitor.
Unforunately, this completely defeats the purpose of having a laptop as it cannot be used on the go...
In my opinion, this does not sound as though the screen is broken, as it is displaying a flawless image right now, but is more than likely a problem with one of the cables running from the logic board to the LCD.
Last week I replaced the Display Cable and the problem persists exactly as it did before. Are there any other parts I should try replacing that are cheap? I do not have $300+ to replace the entire LCD.
Here is a picture I took of the problem:

  • Hard drive and screen failures

Hello all, thank you for any help! I have to do this on my phone, apologies for any errors!
I have an early 2011 macbook pro, purchased in the fall of 2011.
    Last repair:
I had 3 year apple care, and had last taken it for repairs september 2014, for first not ejecting discs from optical drive, then losing touchpad sensory control, then starting to sometimes not booting and/or black screen. When I got it back they had replaced the logic board, hard drive, and screen and connections there were a few screws not flush on the base, and they said that was fine, and it needed to be like that for the touchpad to work.
Today, this morning, it was fine.  I left it at 9 am, came back at noon and the screen was black,  and only the least of fan sounds
    I have
MBPro early 2011 OSX 10.7.4 Lion
Use surge protector 95% of the time (except rarely when out at a cafe)
    'Symptoms':
    Black screen
No boot sound on start up
No sounds of hard drive or disc/DVD drive
No indicator light bar at the front right corner
Sound of fans running on low
Light from charger indicator is green (full)
    I tried:
    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295
A)Shift-control-option-power a handful of times, no change
    B)Disconnected power cord, waited, reconnected
Combinations of these (power off, then A, B, power on; on, A, B, on; B, A, on; etc)
    D) I tried command-R, no boot, no change
Results: only when I use method A, then the optical drive clicks/buzzes. Otherwise no change for any other attempts I listed ^. If I shut down and restart with the power button then as before, no sounds except low level fan sound.
I am quite disappointed, one reason I've enjoyed Apple products is in being able to use them for 5-10 years :/

Whenever you remove system modifications, they must be removed completely, and the only way to do that is to use the uninstallation tool, if any, provided by the third-party developers, or to follow their instructions. If the software has been incompletely removed, you may have to re-download or even reinstall it in order to finish the job.
Here are some general guidelines. Suppose you want to remove something called “BrickYourMac.” First, consult the product's Help menu, if there is one, for instructions. Finding none there, look on the developer's website, say www.brickyourmac.com. (That may not be the actual name of the site; if necessary, search the Web for the product name.) If you don’t find anything on the website or in your search, email the developer. While you're waiting for a response, download BrickYourMac.dmg and open it. There may be an application in there such as “Uninstall BrickYourMac.” If not, open “BrickYourMac.pkg” and look for an Uninstall button.
If you can’t remove software in any other way, you’ll have to erase your boot volume and perform a clean reinstallation of OS X. Never install any third-party software unless you're sure you know how to uninstall it; otherwise you may create problems that are very hard to solve.
Trying to remove complex system modifications by hunting for files by name often will not work and may make the problem worse. The same goes for "utilities" that purport to remove software.
