E530 Fan not speeding up.

Hello,
For the past nine months I've been plagued with an issue where my laptop stutters a lot of if I stress it  -- playing any modern video games, having word processing over and a browser window, etc. -- then every couple of seconds the system seems to freeze/stutter, with sounds looping.
I originally thought it was the sound driver as the e530 would only freeze when sounds were introduced (ie. when playing video games), but after doing almost everything I can imagine, I haven't been able to root out the issue.
After having installed and updated as many drivers as I can imagine, playing around with device manager disables, I realised recently that the fan has stopped spinning up above a low baseline level regardless of the situation. In the past it would spin up when, for example, playing video games. This would suggest to me that the system is overheating and the fan isn't cooling it down, so it mometarily freezes to deal with the heat.
So, my question is as such: Assuming I'm correct that it's the fan that's causing my frustrating freezing issue, how can I get the fan to spin up when it gets hot? I've updated the BIOS to the latest, I've checked power manager and I'm set to high performance (and I checked the cooling system to 'active'). I can't work it out.
Any thoughts? Thanks in advance!

If you feel better I'm sure you can. However MacBooks are well tested at this stage, and you can be pretty sure that it knows what it's doing   Unlike original MacBook Air from 2008 - 2009 that is
80*C is perfectly ok for your mac interiors, and for die of CPU to get to 90*C is quite normal as well. You have to remember standard temperatures inside will be very different than Pro, where CPU has much more room to "breath".
I'm personaly not a big fan of any sort of software that plays with physical elements of a computer (like taking control of fans etc.). I believe they can (but obviously don't need to) cause more harm than good. The way I see it - I trust $460 billion company who manufactures computers for a living more than developer who tries to "change" something that went through thosands of hours of testing
You will notice your fan will go like mad once you're start playing games

  • Macbook Pro 13" Late 2013 Fan Not Speeding Up

I just got my MBPr i5 late 2013 a few days ago and I noticed that the fan never speeds up. I have downloaded macs fan control, as I do on all my macs and the fan never speeds up unless I set it to a constant rpm. I've purposly stressed my computer and saw the temperature shoot right up to 95 degrees celcius, and the fan speed always stays at the minimun of ~1295 rpm. No matter what I do I cant get the fan to speed up under automatic control. Is there something I can do, or should I just contact Apple Care?
Another note is that ever since updating to 10.9.2 I cant access any network drives or use airplay(which I can do from my other mac). Is this a normal issue with 10.9.2?

Yes, i bought the same $2599 Version.
I even tried two of them.
They all run super hot. Especially with chrome. Something is not optimized here.
I tried to watch some videos online using battery. It lasted 4 hours.
It was running hot all time.
I wish it could run like my bro's 2013 macbook air 13".
It runs cold regardless of using chrome or whatever.
The only time it gets warm was when i was rendering.
And it lasts like 10 hours.
I am still can't decide on keeping it.
I bought it for portability and power, but poor battery seems like giving me not much portability like the air.

  • Quad Core overheating - fans not speeding up

Came back from holiday to find my PMac Quad Core making a strange clicking, otherwise dead. Investigation leads me to conclude the automatic fan control is not working -- after startup, fans slow down as usual, but don't speed up when they are needed. Hence overheating followed by abrupt shutdown. I have to unplug the machine and let it cool for 15 minutes or so before I can start it up again. So, (a) anyone have this problem, (b) know a fix short of lengthy trip to the repair depot and (c) for the short term, anyone know of a way to manually control the fans' speed?
    Thanks!

Search the forum first for issues with Quad overheating. You probably want to do an SMU reset as well as run Apple Hardware Test, to see what is up.
You can help protect your system and PSU by installing an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) if you don't already.
There is a "fan control" utility for MacBook's that has been tweaked to work on Mac Pro, but maybe someone has. Or set it to run on low performance rather than automatic.
Do you have Hardware Monitor 4.1 installed? can show temps and fan speeds.

  • MacBook Pro Fans Not Speeding Up

Today, i began to notice that my MBP was running a bit slower than usual. After a couple hours of use, I also noticed it was running a lot hotter than usual. My laptop was running at 170F with only 30% CPU usage. I didn't make too much of it, and considered it an anomaly. Later on in the day, I noticed began to realize that my fan was running a lot slower than usual at higher temperatures. It was only running at 2000-3000RPM regardless of the temperature of the laptop or how much intensive activity I was doing.
My first thought was "Oh great, the fans must be broken and I'll have to bring it into a shop and go through all that again...". I just had my fans die on my old MacBook, and I didn't want to deal with this again. To test the fans, I downloaded smcFanControl and manually set the fans to run at 6200RPM. Sure enough, manually setting it to 6200RPM sped up the fan. Now I knew that the fans themselves were working and could reach the higher speeds.
What next? I tried a restart. Nothing changed.
What now? Well, I obviously knew that smc involved the fan/temperature control, and I could reset it. So I did that. I reset my smc. Still no change.
I started playing around with the fans using smcFanControl and noticed that no matter what minimum speed I would set it to at what temperature, it would always go with the minimum. If it was 5000, it would use 5000. If it was 6200, it would use 6200. If it was 2000 at 190F, it would use 2000.
What should I do from here? Where should I go? If it was easy for me to get to an Apple Store I would just go there, but transportation is an issue and the store is a ways away, so I'd rather fix it on my own. Obviously, the fans can go up to the normal 6200RPM, but they won't for some rason.
    Other info:
    - All temperature sensors are working and seem to be reporting accurately
    - There has been no physical damage to it lately. No spills, drops, or other impacts.
    - It's a 13-inch, Late 2011 model

If they failed, would they be reporting accurate temperatures? Using iStat, I can still see that they're about right. I've been monitoring temperatures for awhile on my MBP, way before this issue started so I have a feel what they should report.
    Currently they're reporting:
    Enclosures: Body temp to 105F
    HD: 100F-110F
    CPU: 150F-200F
    Heatsinks: 130F-160F
Those seem a bit right. I imagine the equation to calculate fan speed takes the input of the temperature sensors and CPU usage stats and varies accordingly. Well, the temperature sensors are reporting valid data, so if my theory is correct I don't think it's an issue.

  • Laptop Fan not increasing speed

I was having very bad heating problems with my pc it would tend to go off all the tkme when it overheated, i decided to blow into the fan and dust came out. It continued to work perfectly untill last night when it continued to overheat, I checked on the Internet and I found I just had to clean the fan so I opened up my laptop this morning and cleaned the fan. But now the fan will not speed up if the temperature is high before it would and make horrible noises, now the fan is on but does not changes its speed when the cpu is heating!I have tried alot of freeware that increases the fan speed but the fan cannot be detected, but the fan is still on and idle. I opened up the laptop 3 times to check if everything was connected and they are but what could be the issue?? Please help my laptop is my life at the moment.

It should be constantly turning not idling...and only speed up when the Laptop tells it to speed up to dissipate the heat from the heat sink as heat rises. If it isn't doing this then the fan is failing.

  • Fan not spinning up/no module for ACPI PM

    I'm a little confused here.
First off, this is a laptop (an old Toshiba) with a Celeron-M (420?).  It can't run too long before shutting down because it gets too hot because the fan will not spin up.  The actual fan is fine, as it runs properly on windows.
I looked around when I was trying to get ACPI up and running for power management(it couldn't find a proper module to use) and found this:
    http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=33104
    Do I need this?
I did try installing it yesterday (with the working pkgbuild in the most recent comment) and while building the kernel, it "spammed" warnings all over and I didn't bother using it.  I didn't change anything in the kernel config menu.

Toshibas for whatever reason are not friendly to Linux. I'm running one with "acpi=ht" in the grub boot line (results in "select() to /dev/rtc to wait for clock tick timed out" error for both cores, but does not with acpi=off). There are no ACPI functions (nothing in /sys whatsoever) but the fan does speed up and down at times (unlike with acpi=off, where it always runs at default speed) (temperature from the only hardware monitor found hangs around 64 degrees celsius, usually),
    [skyalmian@alcyone ~]$ sensors
    k10temp-pci-00c3
    Adapter: PCI adapter
    temp1: +63.0°C (high = +70.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
and no power management to speak of, including battery -- it's all unrecognized by the system, even with installed packages. Meh, I'm fine with it, though. It just means that without knowing the status of the battery I keep mental track of how long the system is on when not plugged in. This Toshiba L505D-S5983 had a poor battery rating on Windows @ only 2 hours max doing generic things, so I round down to just one hour. I was using it one day without it plugged in and it just shut off when the battery went empty.
Threads you should see about Toshibas

  • How to manually speed up fan's speed in order to cool down hot G5's CPUs?

    Hi everybody,
I recently was given an old 2x1.8Ghz PPC G5 in order to build a personnal server but I have troubleshooting with CPU's temps that are really too hot (75°C with no app open, only Finder).
I know these temps are not that "hot" but I can't imagine what it would be when I'll open Safari, iGetter, iTunes, CyberDuck, Adium and Photoshop CS4...).
I first unmount everything, blown inside some bottled air to make sure there were no dust creating overheating inside and remount everything.
Installed Leopard (last OS installable on PPC machines), made the last updates possible and restart.
Everything is working well althought this CPU's temp is so **** high and fans's speed are still at 300rpm. I was looking for some app that would do the same as SmcFanControl for Intel based Macs but for PPC's ones.
After many internet searches on many forums I finally admitted there were no software able to set fans's speed, the only way was manually editing the AppleFan.kext integer's values.
What I did, reducing the integer values to lower rates (256x multiples), then restarted the Mac but nothing happens. As I check the changed values, they indeed are the ones I edited but the fans still are at 300 rpm and the CPU's temp 75°C...
Does somebody have any solution for that issue, I feel I checked everything that was possible but nothing seems to work.
    Any help is welcome...
    Ygddrasill

I thought too that only Apple had these disks and I was told that it was quite hard to find them on the web...
Yes, normally only Apple or AASPs would have them, but they can be found.
I noticed that CPU A was 10°C hotter than the B, is that normal too as the computer is idling?
Sort of normal, with my Quad G5 not doing much I have 51.8°C, 50.3°C,46.2°C, 46.6°C, & as I recall die diffs were greater in 10.4 than 10.5.
Still, your temps are too high for idle, I would only expect those under full load for awhile.
I'd try Power Fractal on a long run & see if the temps increase or just stay where they are...
    http://daugerresearch.com/fractals/powerfractal.shtml
is that a good sign of health for the fans?
I think so, but could you tell if the CPU fans were going full blast?

  • MSI GTX 680 fan automatic speed problem

Hi guys..first sorry for my bad english..
I buy today MSI GTX 680 and I have problem with automatic fan speed...i had GTX 570 TF and that was working perfect but with GTX 680 I have weird problem, when GPU temperature goes up, fan RPM speed goes down
    Screenshot:
Now I disable auto speed and set speed manually, but that's not best solution becouse I must manually set higher speed when i want play BF3, Call of duty MW3 etc...
    Anyone know what is problem?
I update GPU drivers, MSI afterburner ( 2.2.0 ), chipset drivers...
    Thanks!

Fans or other spare parts aren't sold separately. If your vga is still covered by warranty contact MSI if seller refuses rma: >>How to contact MSI.<<
That of course means the vga needs to be rma'ed. Alternatively you can use an aftermarket cooler like Alpenfoehn Peter, Prolimatech MK26 or Accelero Xtreme III

  • Toshiba Qosmio fans not spinning up until high temperatures

I'm using a Qosmio X75 Laptop. My problem is that when playing games (which is a primary use for the laptop) the fans do not speed up to the high setting until the GPU is seemingly already overheating. My FPS wildly varies from second to second. Things will be fine, then FPS will drop drastically and the fans will kick in. That's fine, except that after a second or three the fans slow back down. Of course, seconds later, the GPU will begin overheating again and the fans will kick back in.
This is absolutely crippling the laptop's performance. I have tried speed fan and poking through the BIOS to find a setting where I can say "100% Fans all of the Time." I don't care that my fan's life span is decreased, because as far as I'm concerned, I'd rather have to pay to replace the fans than have a partly functioning laptop. Does anyone else have this problem, and has anyone found a way around it? Is there an official tool that Toshiba puts out that will allow me to do this?
    Thanks

I have the exact same problem! The fan stops as soon as the CPU is cooled down. This

  • Fans not responding

I have one of the new 15" MacBook Pros. I've had it for about a week and have noticed that even though I push the machine, the fans don't seem to ramp up with the usage.
I'm using iStat Menus to view the RPMs and Temps. The CPU can be anywhere between 100-165 degrees for a long period of time... and the fans only hover around 2000 rmp. Is this normal? At what temperature do the fans kick-in at?
I've even tried to get the fans to run faster by running more intensive applications... machine certainly cooks CPU: 176 for a short period of time... no change in rpm on fans.
Any ideas? All sensors seem to be reading... My last computer was a 1Ghz TI, so I'm used to the "hair dryer" noise coming from the fans. I certainly like the quitter fan better, but I would rather have my machine cooled.
Yes... I've tried smcFanControl, which I can get to work, but I'm more worried that there is an issue with my machine. I would think that the computer would be "smart" enough to make the fans spin faster as needed.

    Welcome to the Forums!
Yes, it's normal. I have a 1st gen MBP, which has the fan idle speed at 1000 rpm (newer ones idle at 2000 rpm). They spin at that speed almost all the time. When I am doing processor-intensive tasks (e.g. video rendering) the temps are in the low 70s (Celsius, which is in the 160s Fahrenheit) and my fans will run at 2000-2200 rpm.
The thermal tolerances of the MBP chips are high. Only reason to use smcFanControl is if you want to use the MBP on your lap. As long as you're on a hard surface (to allow some airflow under the computer), the MBP will control it's internal components just fine. Aluminum is a good thermal conductor (as my Calphalon pans confirm), so a fair amount of the internal heat is transferred out directly through the case, not via air movement.
    Hope this helps...

  • Fan not spining

Hello guys today I noticed that my video card (gtx 670 msi power edition) has  very high temp ~90c when im playing video games,  I looked at the fans on the GPU and I saw that one of them was not sniping , then I decided to restart the PC, right after restart i saw both fans start spining for aprox 1.5 sec and 1 fan (the left one) stops after that.  There are x2 PCI-E power cables that connects gpu, The strange thing when i swap them i see both fans stops spining after 1.5 sec after restart. So im not sure what to do. Any suggestion would be very appreciated
btw my gpu is about 2 years old, so it's not recently purchased I cant return it

What psu are you using and did you try another? Also try to set a manual speed for the fans using MSI Afterburner (>>How to use MSI Afterburner<<) and see if fans will run then.
Thanks for the answer, im using corsair tx650, well it seems like it's not PSU i plugged different gpu with dual fans and everything worked just fine. I noticed sometimes my gtx 670 at startup both fans stops spining but when i start loading it 1 fan starts spinning. I also made custom manual profile for fans but my 1 fan still staying at rest no matter what fan % speed i make.  What do u think can i still play at 90c or there high risk to burn it ? Im also thinking about replacing fans not sure if it's even possible

  • Mac Pro PSU fan not spinning...

    System: Mac Pro (early 2009)
After a while the system shuts itself down, and then repeatedly does so while trying to boot back up. After letting it sit a couple of hours, it boots back up, but again starts shutting itself down.
I opened it up and noticed the PSU fan was not spinning - which eventually caused the PSU to overheat and power off.
I ran a hardware test, and got the following error...
    4MOT/1/40000002: PS-0
I searched on the Internet for this error, and it seems (I assume) that this error means the PSU fan is bad, but I plugged it into another fan port on the motherboard and it worked fine. I then, plugged one of the other fans into the PSU Fan port and it did not work.
    I reset the SMC.
I reinstalled the OS (Snow Leopard)
I loaded "Fan Control" software (PSU Fan stays at 0 RPM and cannot be manually adjusted.)
At this point I'm guessing it's either the power supply itself (which I find hard to believe), or the PWM controller for the PSU Fan is not working. To get around the issue, I'm ordering a "simple" (2 wire for power only) fan to replace the built-in fan and a manual (knob) speed controller. (Total of $10, until the real issue can be determined.)
If anyone could help any further, I'd appreciate it.

Wanted to add reason I didn't think it is the PSU...
Red LED flashes when power cord is plugged in and again when it's unplugged.

Most of the fans in the cabinet are under control of the SMC software. They do indeed run full speed with no software intervention, as a fail-safe mechanism. (Software crashes, fans roar at top speed.)
A program like "SMC fan control" can provide visibility to the temperatures, and SOME control of the base fan speeds. My recollection is that the PSU fans 'do their own thing' (unlike the main cabinet fans) and are not software controllable. Components inside the power supply determine the temperatures and adjust its own fan speeds.
If that is the case, when used in combination with your analysis above, you should be able to trace back to an output amplifier (intended to modulate fan speed) that is DEAD and stuck at an output that is telling the fan not to spin. I would hope a 29 cent component was responsible.
A short in the backplane seems exceedingly unlikely. Most of what the power supply does is directly onto its discrete wiring harness. The main DC harness to the motherboard uses high-current connectors. Using more than one of those for signaling or fan speed seems more wasteful than power supply designers could tolerate.

  • Display wont turn on, fans full speed...

so I'm having a problem which i thought I fixed 6 months ago by replacing the pram battery.
    I have a Power PC G5 quad running 10.5
I have the old apple cinema display with the adc to dvi adapter.
When I power up the G5, the display does nothing, and i hear the copmuter power up, but after about 30 seconds, the fans start running full speed and don't stop.
When I push the power button on the display, the power light (within the actual button) lights up, but goes dim when I release the power button. And the display never turns on.
And so without any monitor, i have to force shut down the computer.
I fixed this issue once by re-setting the PRAM.
That was temporary because the issue came back.
But then i replaced the pram battery and its been fine for 6 months.
    Until now.
Oddly enough, i can't seem to reset the pram anymore. I hold down the apple-option-P-R, and then boot the computer up, but i don't hear the chime. And then the fans go full speed after 30 secs. (I can't do a re-start because i have no display. I have to reboot after a hard shut-down. PRAM should still reset this way, shouldn't it?)
Can the pram battery have gone dead after 6 months, when it took years to go dead previously?
    Any thoughts?
    Thank you all!!!

hey Aqua. Thanks for always offering to help.
So here is where I am with this.
It seems that the keyboard isn't communicating with the G5 either.
When I boot up the computer, I push the eject button, but the door to the super drive won't open.
I was going to try and boot up from the startup disk, but I can't open the drive door. The same thing always happens. Fans full speed after 30 secs, and no monitor.
I also can't zap the PRAM. I hold down the apple+option+P+R, but i don't hear the "chime"(is that what we call it?). And then again the fans go full speed after 30 seconds, and with no monitor.
Same thing when I try your suggestion of trying to boot into open firmware.
The computer was not without AC power for any length of time.
So no monitor, and keyboard is unresponsive. Even to open the dvd drive door doesn't work.(is there a way to get that drive door open manually?)
    I appreciate any further suggestions.
I do believe that the PRAM battery can go dead that quick, but it seems odd.
Maybe I'll jsut order one and try it. It is certainly cheap enough!

  • Macbook Pro Fans Not Adjusting

I have a 17' Macbook Pro 2.4Ghz with 4GB SDRAM. Right now it is running at 61 degrees Celsius and the fans remain at 2000rpm. They always remain at 2000rpm regardless of CPU load. The only time they increase is when I charge the MBP. I just completely reinstalled OS X 10.4, everything is essentially brand new. What do I do about this? I took it into the Genius Bar and they said they couldn't replicate the problem so I have no idea what needs to be done.

    This article may prove useful:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1473
If some process is running out of control in the background, temps can rise as well as using up more battery capacity.
Another option is to download and install SMCfancontrol v2.1.2 (freeware). It lets you configure a higher fan idle speed. I have it on my MBP and set to idle the fans at 2250 rpm. This gives the cooling system a headstart on moving air, and there is an easily accessible icon in the menu bar that lets you temporarily bump the speed higher. I find that function useful after I've been watching podcasts (video seems to run up the temps) and want to close the lid but not on a hot keyboard. I pop up the speed to about 4000 rpm and the the temps come down pretty fast.
The MBP is said to tolerate temps up to 100°C (212°F) before shutting down; you have quite a ways to go.
