E530 shuts down when sleeping - fan error?

I have an E530 that seems to shut down after I ignore it for 15 or 20 minutes.  When I restart it, I get a brief "fan error" message.  It tells me that it was shut down unexpectedly, etc.  It always starts up just fine.  the computer is not running hot.  Somehow, I think this is not a real problem with the fan but something about the sleep process that is causing the fan to stop and then the computer shuts down.

Follow up - I set the timer and specifically watched the computer.  It is set to go to sleep after 45 minutes.  At 45 minutes the power light went out.  When I restarted, I got the fan error.

  • IMac (3.4gHz Intel Core i7) shuts down when sleeps, then won't restart

Just bought a brand new 27" iMac (3.4gHz Intel Core i7) which shuts down when sleeps, then won't restart (ie completely dead).
In order to restart, I have to unplug the power cord from the computer, hold power key down for 10secs, replug in and it then starts up. I returned to the store and they spent a couple days letting it go to sleep etc and overnight and for them it was fine. Woke up no problems. They returned it to me yesterday.
So I set it all up again, left it overnight and this morning it was dead again. So now it leaves me to wonder if it's something I have plugged into it.
I have a new Seagate 3TB external hard drive hooked up using USB3.0. This is plugged directly into the back of the computer.
I also have a powered USB hub plugged into the computer which has regular USB stuff such as printer, graphics tablet and another external hard drive (this one is older LaCie 500gb, and have put it into a new USB 3.0 case as well for the arrival of the new iMac (this had an old firewire hard drive case). However this hard drive is switched off at the case and is not being used.
I believe it could possibly be the Seagate 3TB disk causing this problem, but it works fine during the day while I am using the computer, it's just when I either leave it at lunch time to go to a meeting or walk etc or overnight that I come back and it has shut down....leaving me to believe that it's due to the computer going to sleep.
Has anyone else had a similar problem with a Seagate drive? Today I'm conducting an experiment and heading off for lunch with both hard drives unhooked. If I come back and the computer wakes up from a click of the mouse or keyboard as it should, I will plug in one hard drive at a time and re-test. I will leave the Seagate for last, as I don't think it is the old LaCie disk (which is off).
For reference sake, I also have a NAS running off my network through Airport Extreme etc and have my old iMac hooked up to the network too, but don't believe this is the problem.
Initially I did put in some after market RAM (another 8GB) and though that might be the problem, but I removed and it still reacted the same way (plus store I bought it from again booted up fine and woke up fine at their shop after I had taken RAM out too).
Will keep this post updated with my next test (letting computer sleep without either hard drive in), but keen to hear if anyone has had any similar experiences with Seagate disks/cases and the new iMacs.
    Cheers,
    Kristin

    Hey kristinandmike,
I had a similar problem shortly after I bought my 27" iMac. Here is an excerpt from my discussion:
"As BDAqua suggested, I started the process of elimination by shutting down the externals and just leaving up one of the USB drives and using the computer until time to shut it off. After eliminating 2 of the 3 drives I figured it had to be the last one. That drive is a Seagate GoFlex Desk version that allows different bases with differing connectivity. I had previously used FW800 to connect but had switched to USB3 on the new computer. I went ahead and got a Thunderbolt to FW adaptor cable and switched this drive back to Firewire rather than USB3. So far so good."
For some reason the Seagate I was using didn't agree with the USB3 on the Mac.

  • MacBook shuts down when sleep, asks to shut down, screensaver changes

Hello. My MacBook is having all sorts of problems and they just started occuring recently.
    1. It shuts down when it's 'sleeping'. When I open it, I have to press the button to turn it back on. Sometimes it wouldn't reboot and the log in page would pop up, but rarely.
    2. While I'm using my macbook, a window would ask me if I want to 'shut down, restart, sleep, cancel'. Or something like that. It would do this every few minutes.
    3. I noticed that my screensaver would go back to Flurry/default.
Could this be a battery issue? I noticed that it says 'replace soon'. I will definitely go to a genius bar, but I'm too busy right now with school I don't know when I can make a trip to the nearest Apple store.

You can get a new battery fairly cheap on eBay if you have the Early 2008 MacBook with the easily removable battery.

  • Mac Pro Shuts down when sleep selected

My Mac Pro (Quad 2.8 - Early 2008) Locks up or powers off when I try to sleep the machine. This also happens during an automatic sleep, which I have since disabled. I got assistance from online tech support. We tried just about every routine procedure, but nothing helps.
The strange part is once the machine is powered off I have to wait about 20 minutes before I can turn it back on. Every attempt using the power button fails. So I have to let it sit for a while. I thought it was over heating, but the fans are working fine and very quiet.
    Help needed.

I think it gets a little bit mental when we start talking about nano volts in power supplies. If these machines need a pristine supply to operate, then how have Apple managed all these years? This is a problem with the machines themselves (and even if it IS caused by domestic power supply, then the fault is still with the machines, as most folk don't live in these hermetically sealed biospheres that seem to be recommended). Mine just started doing the same thing. Other machines (Mac Pros, iMac and MacBook) are fine. Also odd that so many domestic power supplies across the world cause different people with the same machine to have the same fault.
I suspect it's a dodgy card. Perhaps corrupted system preferences, but given the number of folk with the problem (why does that always get ignored in favour of assuming all incidents are separate?), I suspect a hardware issue.
I've tried the 'unplugging everything' routine, but the fault returns. I'll try the 'unplugging everything for a day' routine - as mooted - and see what's what. But I suspect a trip to Apple is on the cards. I'm running Disk Warrior at present, to what avail I'm unsure, but I'll update my progress here.

  • IdeaPad U400 shuts down when in sleep mode

My IdeaPad U400 shuts down when sleeping. All programs terminate.
I reviewed another poster's complaint about a similar problem several months. The response instructed the user to update the computer's drivers.
I have updated my drivers. My computer still shuts down regularly while sleeping. Please help!

    Hi RuthAnne,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
I’m sorry to hear that the issue still persists even after re-installing the drivers as suggested in the previous posts, I also assume that you have updated the Video Driver(Win 7 or Win 8) & Chipset Driver (Win 7 or Win 8)specifically and checked if this resolves the issue.
If the issue is same even after installing the above mentioned drivers, please backup the Data in the computer to any external hard drive and perform OSRI (Operating System Re-Install) to check and confirm the issue is with the
    OS (Operating System).
NOTE: If the computer is shipped with pre-installed operating System OSRI can be performed using the instructions in U400 User Guide click here, check the steps to perform OKR(One Key Recovery) on page 23.
    Hope this helps!!!
    Best Regards

  • MacPro shuts  down in sleep mode

MACPRO 3.1 2x 2.8 Quad core Intel Xeon  8GB Ram ATI Radeon HD 5770 Mac Cinema HD 23 inch OSX 10.6.8.
If I allow or select sleep mode through either keyboard shortcuts or apple menu it immediately shuts down I can keep it running but half asleep (screen at rest ) if I have an app using the internet for example Safari using radio stations ; if however there is no app using the internet then the computer will shut down when sleep mode kicks in.
This seems to be a resent phenomena I have changed the graphics card from a Nvidia since the Nvidia was dying ( occasional freezes and wavy faint blue horizontal lines) although the sleep problem surfaced before swapping cards; I am not sure whether this is a hardware issue or a combined software hardware issue.
Anyone else having similar sleep problems ?
The computer is working fine apart from this one issue.
We are in the midst of summer here so the room temperature is an average of 30˚C at the moment can this have anything to do with the sleep issues?

Power or other problems related to unexpected system sleep, shutdown, lights or fans justify an SMC reset. Read all the steps.
    Before Resetting the SMC
Try each of the following steps in this order before you reset the SMC. Test the issue after completing each troubleshooting step to determine if the issue still occurs.
Press Command + Option + Escape to force quit any application that is not responding.
Put your Mac to sleep by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Sleep. Wake the computer after it has gone to sleep.
Restart your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Restart.
Shut down your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Shut Down.
Resetting the SMC for Mac Pro, Intel-based iMac, Intel-based Mac mini, or Intel-based Xserve
    Shut down the computer.
    Unplug the computer's power cord.
    Wait fifteen seconds.
    Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.
After completing the above please determine if the problems also occur in "Safe Mode":
Safe Mode or "Safe Boot" is a troubleshooting mode that bypasses all third party system extensions and loads only required system components. Read about it: Starting up in Safe Mode
You must disable FileVault before you can start your Mac in Safe Mode.
Starting your Mac in Safe Mode will take longer than usual, graphics will not render smoothly, audio is disabled on some Macs, and some programs (iTunes for example) may not work at all.
Merely starting your Mac in Safe Mode is not intended to resolve the problem, it's to observe its performance without certain additional components.
To end Safe Mode restart your Mac normally. Shutdown will take longer as well.

  • IMac is shutting down when it attempts to sleep with 'hibernate image' error

Our iMac is shutting down when it attempts to sleep.  This started following a Yosemite security update, though of course it is difficult to determine for sure that that was the cause.
In the console, the following message occurs before every shut down:
kernel[0]: Failed to get hibernate image filename
Suggestions?  Does someone perhaps know what exactly the hibernate image is (we have a tiled screensaver that shows an iPhoto album -- could it be that one of those files is corrupt?) so that I can attempt to change it to see if that fixes the problem?
    Thanks!
    System:  iMac  (21.5-inch, Mid 2011), OS X 10.10.2

I reset the SMC by following Apple's instructions for this computer (turn off, unplug, wait, replug, wait, turn on)

    More information:
    1. It looks like the crash/shut down is happening when the display tries to sleep (timing is 15 min after the beginning of automatic sleep).

  • My computer shuts down when I put it to sleep

Ever since I used some of those auto-download upgrades my Mac shuts down when I put it to sleep. What's wrong?

Hi gazebo, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates.
May even need to do an Archive and Install if you have room on the HD, but saves all your files and gives a new OS...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
I only use Software Update to see what is needed, then get them for real via...
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/
That way I can wait a week or so, check the forums for potential problems, and get Permissions & such in order before installing.

    Hi,
How do you wake up your computer, pressing FN? How long it takes to wake up from sleep?
I suspect that your computer unexpected shut down when you put it into Sleep.
Please run SFC /scan command to check if there is any error or corrupted files which may cause the issue.
Would you please also check if there is any minidump created after sleep?
To ensure minidumps are enabled, refer to the step “Configure the dump type” in following article:
How to read the small memory dump file that is created by Windows if a crash occurs

  • MBP shuts down after sleep when 2% battery left

Sorry guys if u find it irritating to see the similar question again n again but i couldnt stop myself from asking this...
i have my mbp just 3 weeks old and i tried to callibrate the battery just few hrs ago...i continuously used my mbp until the battery level reached to 2% (the warning message showed when it was 6%)...just then i had to received a phone call. When i was busy talking, i noticed that the mbp has gone to sleep mode...but when i returned (2-3 mins later), i found it shut down...
well, i think it should have remained to sleep mode but it didnt...then after an hour i connected the power cord and switched on and noticed a progress bar which i saw for the first time....i have been charging it for 40-50 mins, now...
also the health of my battery keeps fluctuating between 95-100 %...istat shows this...is this normal???
So what i want to know is, Is this normal for mbp to shut down when the battery reach that low?? OR there is some problem in my MBP???
if there is should i be going to my mbp reseller shop for service or it is something i can handle myself????
    thanks in advance..

then how am i supposed to callibrate if it shuts down before completely draining the battery???
and what about the battery health % being fluctuating? my battery have completed only 9 cycles and the health shown at the moment is 97%

  • Should G5 shut down when it goes to sleep?

I bought this G5 on eBay for a song (and I've been singing ever since) .  It came without a disk, no accesss to the password and they had taken the Airport Card out.  (Specks say it comes with the APCard)  Serves me right I guess.  Anyhow,  It has always shut down right after it goes to sleep.  Is there anything I can do to stop this?  I work between two computers and sometimes I don't get right back to it.  Restarting all the time is a real annoyance.

OK, the answer to the main question is "no" it shouldn't shut down when it goes to sleep.  I would first open the Energy Saver panel in System Preferences and make sure that you have the machine set to never go to sleep.  Here is a Tiger screen shot of that panel:
That should solve your immediate problem.  The particular settings work very well for me, allowing me to put the computer to sleep from the Apple menu when I am not going to be using it for a while.  You might also want to take a look at the "Schedule,,," area in the energy saver panel, as in this picture, to see that nothing is selected there.
Now, if the machine actually shuts down when you command it to sleep, then there are other issues we can work on.

How do you prevent the computer from shutting down when in sleep mode and plugged in?

    Thanks tjk.
Those are great suggestions and got me looking in places I had not considered before. Unfortunately, the problem remains. The System Preferences did not have the shut down option activated and there are no parental controls active on the computer.
