Where did the phone come from as most of the UK carriers unlock phones, but the fact that you are now abroad may be a problem.

You can use the phone with your australian number provided international roaming is enabled. You will be charged more ( for messaging & talking )than that in Australia since you will be using someone's else's network.

I have been through more than a dozen phones in the last year. Problem after problem with the 8220. This last time, they (T-Mobile) decided to help and sent me a new phone.
I was actually quite pleased, and told every one who would listen that FINALLY, the phone works.
Today, I tried to call my cousin who is in a convalescent home. I said, 'Hi' and even more, and then he hung up. Hmmm.. He couldn't hear me.
I called back, and he still didn't hear me. I just assumed he couldn't hear through the phone... or maybe I had accidentally hit the mute button.
I got another call from some one I speak to regularly. Nothing.
I called T-mobile (611) and answered the voice prompts. NOTHING.
The phone was working this morning. I can't do ANYTHING with it now. HELP! And please help me quickly. We have an election tomorrow, and I work the polls. I need to be able to call City Hall

Hi, Im travelling to Japan and would like to know if it is possible to use my E72-1 there my local provider is TELENOR AS I understnad it all netowkr in Japan are 3G but seems according to guide books that most european phones will not work in Japan - Also power is quite different so wonder if my charger will work I have plugs to change the socket .

First, the iPhone would need to be unlocked. That would depend on where you bought it. Next, the North American phone would not work with all of the networks outside of the US. Also, the warranty for the device is only good in the US, so if you have a problem with the phone, you would need to bring it back to the US to an Apple Store. Where did you purchase the phone?

If you can find an iPhone running iOS5 and those are the specs for iOS5, there is no reason it should not work.
If you want a more current version of iOS or a more current device, a Windows computer is always an option at significantly less cost.
Granted, there is no requirement to have a computer to use an iPhone.

Put it into DFU mode - hold the sleep/wake button and home button until the screen goes black (ignoring the slide to turn off slider). When the screen goes black release the sleep/wake button but hold the home button. Continue holding the home button for 10 seconds, then release it. The screen should stay black. Plug it into iTunes and it should come up with this message "iTunes has detected an iPhone in recovery mode. It must be restored before use", that's when it is successfully in DFU mode. Now press the restore button in iTunes and it should run smoothly :)
