E63: Use chat/facebook etc with wifi only?

Hello again,
I get the feeling I'll be on this forum a lot while I work out how to use my phone
Earlier in the day I was web browsing on my E63 phone. I had gone to the browser by selecting my WLAN network, connecting it and from there going to 'start browsing'. Afterwards I checked my credit and it was still the same (around the $8 mark).
Later on, however, I went to the web by using the shortcuts on the home screen (Web and Facebook). I also used the built in chat program (the one under Installations) for a short time. When I checked my credit next it was pretty much at $0.
I am assuming (but I'm not sure) that when I used either the web/Facebook shortcuts and/or the chat application, they connected via my service provider (Optus) instead of through my WiFi.
Is there any way to a) work out which of these things was responsible for eating all my credit and b) make it so that the web and chat shortcuts automatically connect through wifi and not through my service provider? There may be an obvious answer somewhere but I couldn't find it in the manual, so any help would be greatly appreciated.
Sorry that was so long, I'm just hoping I can figure this out. I bought this phone so I could chat and use the web through wifi so I wouldn't have to pay for it, and if I can't do that it will almost have been a waste

Hi,
Thanks for your reply. I have managed to fix the problem by deleting the other access points and only having my WLAN, so it always asks before connecting (if I need the other ones I can always reenable them by saving the settings again from the original message).
If anyone else is interested, I found this discussion to be helpful as well:

Yyou will need a SIM card to activate it.
It does not have to be an active SIM card.
Once you have activated it, it should work just fine.

Thanks,  After changing my settings in face time per your suggestion, (it needed to be done),  I turned off cellular data and data roaming and made a call using face time.  It worked!  Great way to stay in touch while overseas without the need for those egregious phone data plans.

  • I HAVE AN IPAD 2 WITH WIFI ONLY, CAN I GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM ANY SMARTPHONE, OR DO I NEED A SPECIFIC PHONE FOR THIS?

i ave an ipad 2 with wifi only, can i get internet access from any cell phone, or do i need a specific phone or type of phone

I received an iPad 2 for Christmas (the 1st Apple item I've ever owned!) and own a Nokia N95 8GB mobile (that's pretty much on its last legs/ready to die any day).
On the Nokia I've got 2 apps (downloaded from/via Nokia's 'Ovi' app store): JoikuSpot & HandyWi. Both are the free versions.
I've not used HandyWi much - if at all - but JoikuSpot has been great. Basically, it creates a wifi hotspot (as pjl123 mentioned) in a couple of straightforward steps, and allows a few devices to be connected. It displays who/what is connected at a given time - so you can check if the guy having coffee behind you is piggybacking your hotspot or not! - data packets sent received etc.
The paid version has the benefit of allowing you to secure the hotspot and other security features.  Their website is www.joiku.com, FYI.
Given how slow behind the 8 ball Nokia has been, their phones are getting cheaper and cheaper - given Joiku's meant to work with Nokia S60, Symbian ^3, Maemo, Meego & Sony Ericsson S60, this might be a cost effective option.
Ps. Ah! One more thing - Joiku's website specifies that 3G must be used; that WAP will not work. Good luck, enjoy!

  • My iPhone 4 froze when I was using the Facebook app. The only thing moving is the indicator at the top spinning to show its "thinking." Its been like this for about an hour, I can't even turn it off. Any ideas (other than letting the battery go dead)?

Thank you, I've tried that but it won't work either, the logo never comes up. It just stays on the FB app screen. I tried connecting to iTunes to see if I can fix something from there and it freezes iTunes. Also tried disconnecting the wifi (I don't know how I thought that would help but worth a try) and plugging it into the charger but still nothing. I think I'll have to visit the store tomorrow. I appreciate it, though!

It will only show if the device is turned on. And if someone else has it, they can turn that feature off. Your best options are to return to the location where you think you lost it, and see if anyone returned it. Also contact your local law enforcement.

You have to locate acessible WiFi networks. Most major hotels now have WiFi.

  • Can you use facetime with wifi only? No SIM card in iphone4

Party A: No SIM Card, in US, calling using WIFI
Party B: SIM Card, in another country, receiving calls, with WIFI
Can Party A and B connect through Facetime?
    Thanks for your time.

    sasan007 wrote:
You can make video calls through skype.I think without sim you cannot use facetime because facetime needs your sim number.
Slight correction: FaceTime on the *iPhone* needs your SIM number.  FaceTime on the iPod Touch, iPad and MacOS have no such need.
This is one of the things I hate about Apple.  Why not just allow everything to behave the same?  Why should FaceTime, a non-cellular application, have to behave differently on the iPhone than on all other platforms?
(I also don't like that Videos lives in the iPod app on the iPhone, but has it's own app on the iPod Touch and iPad)

  • Using my Blackberry Abroad by WIFI only... HELP!

I've been researching this topic and speaking to people from Vodafone customer services and I seem to be getting different answers!
I'm going abroad for 6 month and want to use my Blackberry for WIFI only to avoid any overseas charges. I was planning on turning the mobile network off - this means I won't be able to send/recieve calls, SMS etc. right? Then I was going to leave data services on but off whilst roaming and turn on the WIFI. I did this and tested it out at home and it connected fine. However, I've been told that I need to turn data services off otherwise I will incur charges from GPRS, do they mean data services off and off whilst roaming? Because I did this and tried to connect via WIFI and it didn't work, or do they just mean turn data services off whilst roaming?!

  • How can I use my iPad mini 2 wifi only as gps in my car?

can I blue tooth my iPhone 5C with iPad mini 2 wifi only and use my iPad as a gps in my car?

Take a look at iOS: Understanding Personal Hotspot  Your cellular carrier needs to support this feature and may charge extra, on top of your normal data plan.

  • PLAYBOOK WITH WIFI ONLY

MY BLACKBERRY HAS WIFI ONLY, SO WHAT DO I NEED TO GET CONNECTED TO IT? NOT READY COMPUTER OR TABLET SMART. CAN SOMEONE HELP ME?

You don't say if you have a new PlayBook or got a used one from somewhere else. Presuming you are starting out with a new PlayBook, you can click on the link below that takes you to a blog on setting up the PlayBook for the first time:
    Setting up WiFi PlayBook
If you have picked up a used PlayBook and it has already been set up, then you make a WiFi connection by clicking on the third menu symbol in from the top right (after swiping in from the top right) which looks like a series of concentric arcs.  Make sure the slider on the right is set to "on".  Click on the concentric arcs which brigs up the WiFi menu.
Once in that menu, if a WiFi signal is available, it will show up on the list on the right.  Click on one of the available networks.  The easiest is to pick an open one.  Encrypted ones will prompt you for a password  and possibly more information.  If you are connecting to your home's WiFi, just enter the information from your home connection.
    Good luck,
    PlayBook 64GB and 32 GB

  • Is gps possible on iPad mini with wifi only?

The specs for the new retina ipad mini show gps capability for only the wifi+cellular model, and not the wifi only version.
I've only ever needed wifi enabled iPads, hotspotting them with my iphone, so I'm wondering, is there any way to get the ipad to use the iPhone's cellular capability and show gps mapping?  Of course I could just use the iphone, but the iPad mini screen is much better.

mende1, where did you get "Personal Hotspot is designed to make GPS work in Wi-Fi-only devices"? Since for location the iPod use the location of wifi router that are in Apple's database. Since the iPhone does not have a permanent location, it is not in Apple's database. This is confirmed by other posts and ggfromcp statement that "In the past I've tried this with my ipad2 and it hasn't worked".
