E66: Data "roaming" between WiFi & GPRS/3G

Greetings,
Can the E66 can do automatic roaming between the WiFi network in my home and the GPRS/EDGE/3G?
Most of the competitive devices can do this and I'm unable to configure my E66 to do the same...
Regards,
Alex

Hi ...
Reset the device:
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
If that doesn't help, tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings
No data is lost due to a reset.
And make sure the iOS software is up to date. Tap Settings > General > Software Update

  • Skype Abroad - No Wifi and No Data Roaming

I will be going on a trip to Turkey in a few weeks, and I am trying to understand if I can make calls with the Skype app on my Droid without a wifi connection and with data roaming turned off.  I thought I read somewhere that Skype has it's own 3G network or some other method that I can use to make calls with the Skype app.  I would be buying Skype credit in advance.  Is what I am saying possible?
My goal is to be able to use Skype to make phone calls without wifi and without getting charged for data roaming by cell phone carrier.  Thank you for your help.

    Sure, I know about SGO.
The poster was asking how he can use Skype app abroad, without roaming charges, without any internet connection. This is not possible, unfortunately.
If we are talking about SGO usage in Turkey, this won't work either, as there are no local SGO numbers there.

  • Use of Push Notifications between Wifi and Cell Data

Is there a way to set the phone to automatically have push notifications turn ON when you're on WiFi and OFF when you're on cell data?  I dont mind recieving them, but it would be nice if there was a preference to recieve them only when on WiFi.  Anyone know how to do that?

The iPhone priority for a data connection is: WIfI>3G>Edge>GPRS. Note: While in sleep mode, unless connected to a power source, iPhone will disconnect from available WiFi & use cellular data for all data needs.
But my iPhone 4 definitely is using 3G when wifi is available, even switching to it when having been on wifi. For me this has only been happening since we started receiving 3G and 4G in our area. Used my full 200 meg data plan in one day when I normally hadn't come close to that all month. My settings were definitely set for using wifi and wifi was definitely available (was using it with my laptop). My internet is only 1 mb so I wonder if it chooses 3G or 4G because of speed. If so, this is a problem for me. If not, there is another problem.

  • Face time with wifi only.  I have a 4Gs iPhone traveling to Japan.  Can I use face time with another 4Gs or IMacback in the States using just wifi and with I have my Celluar Data and Data Roaming off?

Thanks,  After changing my settings in face time per your suggestion, (it needed to be done),  I turned off cellular data and data roaming and made a call using face time.  It worked!  Great way to stay in touch while overseas without the need for those egregious phone data plans.

  • With two iPhones 4, turning on Facetime on both iPhones, turning on Data Roaming, Enable 3G, cellular data.  Wifi has been enabled on, Wi-Fi is on, 'ask to join networks' is on.  I cannot get the two iPhones 4 to do 'FaceTime' with each other.  Changes?

May 16, 2011:  The two iPhone 4 phones, being next to each other, cannot do FaceTime.  with Data Roaming = On, Wi-Fi = On, 'Ask to join Networks' = On, Enable 3G = On, Cellular Data = On,
Why is Facetime on one iPhone 4 not connecting to ther other iPhone 4 when both have the 'FaceTime' icon showing on both?

I will through that note and have applied the items in that note on both iPhones.  Both iPhones are in the same physical location.  Both appear to be connected to a wi-fi network.  Still no FaceTime connection.  Is it such that both iPhones must be connected to a Wi-Fi and that wifi must be a network without a password needed to join it?  I thought 'Data Roaming = On' was such that iPhone 4 would then find a wifi network without a password needed and one could use FaceTime.
Is that the incorrect assumption?   If yes or no, what specific items are needed to be checked before I do this again or be checked while attempting FaceTime.

  • HT1695 I am connected to my wifi and have turned my data roaming off but my phone is still not connecting to the internet. Why is this?

Am struggling to get online through my i-phone at home. It is fine at work where I have signal (but I go through the work wifi anyway), whereas at home I cannot get online at all, despite having strong wifi signal and disabling my data roaming on the phone. I am not very good with technology! Can anyone work out what I'm doing wrong please?

If the modem is also a router, either use the modem in bridge and run pppoe client on the TC.. that is assuming ADSL or similar eg vdsl. If it is cable service.. and the modem is a router, then bridge the TC.. go to internet page and select connect by ethernet and below that set connection sharing to bridge.
Please tell us more about the modem if the above gives you issues.

  • Global data charges with data roaming OFF

I have an issue with both my iPhone 4 and 4S getting incoming global data "leakage" I will call it.
Both are running iOS 6.1.3, which is the latest software update. Both phones are used fairly regulary along the San Diego border with Mexico, and often times on the Mexican side within 2-3 miles of the border. My phones are always set as follows: "Cellular Data -> On" Roaming = "Voice Roaming -> On" and "Data Roaming -> Off" with the iPhone 4S also having "International CDMA -> On"
However, both phones consistently receive incoming global data hits in very minor amounts (0.1 KB to 5.5. KB) when they are in an area where the signal is switching between my USA carrier (Verizon) and the Mexican cellphone towers. I know this because almost every time it happens it is when we are crossing the border or close to the border where the towers are competing for the signal to my phones. In one case I watched as my iPhone 4 switched from Verizon 3G to Extended network and shortly thereafter I received a push notification (message) from my WhatsApp application. The next day it showed the hit on my daily usage as a 6.9 KB hit even though data roaming was set to OFF.
Please don't respond to tell me that the solution is to switch Cellular Data -> Off when I am near the border. I already know this will solve the problem, but the issue is that we want to use the full functionality of our phones in this area as our employment and our residence is right along the border and we don't want to have to suspend data completely every single time we cross the border, which is nearly every day.
The data hits have thus far been in the range of less than 500 KB per month total (almost no impact at $5 per MB) so my concern is not so much with the minimal expenses incurred, it is more the principal of the issue and the problem.
I want to know if there are other users experiencing the same issue so I can have some more evidence to get Verizon to push Apple for a fix. Apple iPhones have consistently had "Data/WiFi/Roaming" issues on its phones since 2008 (or more as far as I can tell) and I believe this is a related issue that has never fully been fixed.
Thanks in advance for your replies of similar situations, regardless of what country this happened in.

Thanks for clarifying. I do hope you had a wonderful trip! You mentioned you were turning the cellular data on occasionally to use a little data. When your data is turned on, even for just a few minutes, your phone sees that connection as a window to look through your applications for any notifications that you've missed and download email and other messages, occasionally resulting in a significant amount of data usage. What were the countries that you visited? When you log in to view your statement on http://bit.ly/xB4iTc, does it show you had a $25 Global Data or $29.99 Global Value plan for any part of your trip?
    Thank you

  • Shut off 3G data roaming on N97?

Ill be travelling soon, and i dont want to use any 3g Data roaming to reduce the costs.
Anyone know how to completly switch off this on the N97?

I don't think there is a way to differentiate between 3G data and EDGE or GPRS data but try this:
Go to Settings > Connectivity > Destinations > Internet
Select your provider's connection setting, then Option > Edit
Scroll down to the last item "Use access point" and toggle to "After confirmation" rather an "Automatically."
That way, every time your phone tries to connect, it will ask you first and you can say "No" or "Yes" if you feel it is worth the expense.
You might want to do the same for the "WAP" and "Multimedia" destinations as well.
Some applications have a setting that prevents access when roaming but unfortunately, not all apps, so the above way is one method to "catch all" connections.
Then when you come home, you can just go back and change it back to "Automatically" and you're back to seamless use.

  • IPhone, VPN and 'data roaming'  (UK)

I had great difficulty setting up a VPN link to my university server. Even with identical settings to those on my laptop(s) the iPhone persistently produced the immediate message 'the server does not exist' (Oh! yes it does!). This applied on the EDGE, and more than one WiFi network. (And of course I checked the name very carefully!)
Anyone else with similar problems might like to know that I have solved this, for reasons I am unclear about, by:-
1 - substituting the (hopefully static) numeric IP address for the VPN server name
2 - turning 'on' Data Roaming (default being off)
Neither of these two measures works on their own but the combination works fine. Whilst the first might be easily explained by some DNS issue I do not see why the second measure is necessary, and there are dark warnings about charges in the handbook. What is 'data roaming' and why should it make a difference even when logged into the phone's home network?
    Comments appreciated!

When you are outside the normal O2-UK coverage zone (i.e., in another country), then the phone is "Roaming". The Data Roaming switch can be used to control whether the iPhone tried to make a GPRS/EDGE data connection when the phone is roaming. I.e., when your phone is connected to a non-02 network.
If you are in the UK and connected to 02 while trying to connect to your VPN server, then you should not need to turn Data Roaming on. However, if you are trying to connect to your VPN server whilst outside the UK, then I would expect you to need to turn on Data Roaming (unless you are using WiFi)
    Hope that clear things up.

  • Disable data roaming

How can I prevent data roaming when I go to a foreign country when I still want to keep the call roaming active?
When I search a new network in a foreign country, I find the nokia messaging look activate that cause me some data roaming charge. Any way I can disable all data connection except thru the wifi device I want.

I'm using 5800 under roaming for about five months now, I have never encountered a data roaming charge, when ever my phone tries to connect to a data network I get a warning about data roaming and I can simply prevent the connection by appropriate selection of the prompt message.
Anyways preventing the data roaming is not very hard in any symbian device, it's not very straight forward as other platforms though. You can always alter the destination setting (APN, by astound a junk piece at the end) so that your phone will not connect to data network (either on roaming our not).
Also new symbian has the one touch setting needed. My N8 allows me to select between data connection in home network, always and wifi only.

  • Data roaming setting does not show up on iPhone 4S

My wife got a new iPhone 4S from Verizon a few weeks and and she's been using it with no probolems since then. Yesterday we crossed the board into Canada and I tried to turn "Data Roaming" off on her phone but the "Data Roaming" setting does not exist in Settings->General->Network. On my Verizon iPhoen 4S it has the optios "Voice Roaming" and  "Data Roaming" but on hers only "Voice Roaming".
I was able to turn off all cellular data but that's actually inconvenient because we're right on the border and often go in an out of US cell converage areas, so with data roaming off it lets me use data whenever there's a US cell signal and otherwise prevents me from using data on a Canadian signal, but with all cellular data off, you have to constantly be toggling the setting when you think you go from a cell tower in the Canada to one in the US.
Does anybody have any idea why the "Data Roaming" setting does not exist on her phone yet it does on mine? Both phones are running iOS 5.0.1.

On your wife's phone: Dial *228. When prompted, select 2 to update her roaming capabilities. When complete, you will hear a confirmation message. In about a minute, you will also see an alert that your service update is complete. See if doing that fixes things.

  • HT1807 I have an iPhone 3s.  How do I turn OFF data roaming?

I am traveling in Mexico.  I have an iPhone 3s.  How do I turn OFF data roaming?  Under SETTINGS I don't see Network. I don'r see it under SETTINGS/General either.

What you should do, if you don't want any nasty surprises, is put your phone in Airplane mode. That turns off all iPhone radios, but you can go back into settings & turn WiFi back on.
Do not rely on the data roaming setting to protect you.

  • Leaving data roaming ON while abroad: what apps use data in the background?

As a quick preface, I've had an iPhone since Week 1 in the summer of 2007. I've been working outside the U.S. for well over a year now, so I've been roaming with my iPhone for almost the entire time I've owned it. I had kept data roaming turned OFF since the fall of '07, when a software update brought it as an option, but visual voicemail continued to work as always even when data roaming was OFF (under software versions 1.x).
After hearing about the early bugs with iPhone software v2.0, I stuck with the last version of 1.x until about a month ago. While I like almost everything about 2.2, I was dismayed to notice that visual voicemail no longer worked if data roaming was turned OFF. (Apparently, the visual voicemail "loophole," for lack of a better phrase, was closed with 2.0 or a subsequent version of the software.)
This has left me facing a conundrum: Turning data roaming ON might leave me susceptible to a big data roaming bill, while leaving it OFF leaves me in the dark as far as the existence and Caller ID of new voicemail(s).
QUESTION: Does anyone know of the DEFINITIVE list of which iPhone apps use data roaming in the background? That is, if I leave data roaming ON but NEVER use the email app or Safari or YouTube or any other app that accesses the internet and would incur data charges (or, at least, never use any of those apps unless connected to a WiFi network), which apps will use data in the background anyway, WITHOUT me actually launching the app?
Back in the 1.x versions, I'm not aware of any apps that used data unless the user actually launched an app, but I've noticed that, under 2.2, Apple's App Store app routinely connects to the internet on its own to check for updates if I have data roaming enabled. (I'd like to turn this OFF, but doing so doesn't appear to be an option.)
I'm hoping App Store is the only app that has this (bad) behavior, and that I'd be safe leaving data roaming ON while consciously avoiding using data over the EDGE network, but I have no idea if apps like Stocks, YouTube, Weather, etc., have been updated, in 2.x or even 2.2, to check for updates in the background, and thus run up data roaming charges.
If anyone can shed any light on this, it would be much appreciated. Thanks very much.

The iPhone is officially unlocked and can be used with whatever provider/SIM card.
But imagine, we are a team of around 20 people, travelling to all kind of different countries all over the world (changing, not the same person is always travelling to the same countries), and of course (I didn't mention this in my first post), we also have to stay in contact by phone. In addition, also whatsapp is based on the phone number as far as I know, which is our main "quick" communication tool. It would never work out that all of us inform the others all the time about the changing phone numbers, depending on which country each individual is at the moment.
Your answer unfortunately just confirmed what my researches so far resulted in... there really seems to be no apple-like easy solution to manage data roaming for apps individually. In the beginning I was sure to quickly find something in the appstore, since I assume my situation is not such an exception. I guess I have to start learning how to program apps! :-)
Anyway, thanks for your answer! As I mentioned before, every idea is appreciated.
