E70 - imperfect?

Hi everyone,
I've been using my E70-1 for 4 weeks now and have experienced a number of problems with it. I was hoping to share my experiences with other users and see if anyone has had the same troubles...
I am using firmware 2.0618.07.10
My issues are as follows
1) Phone reset itself twice to date - once after sending a text and once while writing an email
2) Phone has refused to switch on once. Removed the battery and reinserted. Phone then turned on.
3) No auto-keylock! Very frustrating! Found a 3rd party app called AutoLock ver1.1 which adds this functionality but is not perfect either (phone still locks during a call)
4) Alarm 'on' icon on standby screen disappears after turning the phone off and on again
5) Unable to switch off loud welcome video and tone
6) Certain items in to-do list are 'stuck'. Cannot delete them from phone or by synchronising with PC
7) Calendar entries cannot be viewed in full on the phone. e.g. long calendar entry from Outlook including time and place for a meeting has venue cut off. Cannot see extra info even if 'open' entry
8) Not enough room in active standby for shortcuts. 6233 allows many more shortcuts than the 5 allowed in E70
9) Slow S60 OS - noticable delays, especially while scrolling through programs and opening messages.
This list of frustrations grows by the day. What is in fact a phone with enourmous potential is spoilt by these relatively minor bugs and omissions which collectively make me want to return to my old 6230!
Nokia support has yet to return to respond to an email detailing my problems. Has anyone found solutions/workarounds to these issues? Or are they confined to my particular handset? Are we all just waiting for FW ver 3?
Happily I HAVE managed to set up Truphone (a voip program with free calls to US/Canada) via a SIP connection to work with my home WiFi. The setup process is difficult but with some effort and liberal use of Truphone's troubleshooting guides is IS possible and very enjoyable!

Only reset itself twice! Sounds like you got a lucky phone. Try Cooga Mlock, not sure if it is available for this model but google it and see. Alarm icon, yep I get simmilar with a headphone icon on the N80. To-do list is set to the 3 items and until a FW update changes this you will be unable to add to the list or remove. As for the slow responsiveness, that is the same on all th N series I think, but could be the size of memory card slowing it down or maybe some 3rd party apps making it run slow. Could also be that you have a few apps running in the background. Hold the squiggle key down and press C on all but the Phone icon. It will shut the apps down. Failing that you might do best to back up the data on the phone and do a hard reset.

E70 PDF Reader : Unable to open. File type not sup...

This morning I have bought an E70, among others due to its highscreen resolution and the possibility to run a PDF reader on it.
I have now tried ...
  - the pre-installed Adobe PDF Reader
  - the Adobe PDF Reader supplied with the PC Suite CD-ROM
  - the Adobe PDF Reader available on europe.nokia.com
I am fascinated by a software which presents itself in the About box as '1.5', prompts during installation for '1.0.5' and has filenames '1_5_0'.
Apart from minor variations in the SIS filenames they all share the same annoying feature: They refuse to display any of my PDF files but display a message 'Unable to open. File type not supported. 5. !' instead.
It doesn't seem to be a problem of the PDF files, since a collegue of mine was able to open them on his E61 or E70 (forgot to ask).
Any idea what this problem could be caused by?

I am speechless -- but happy.
The complaint about the file type only appears if you try to open a PDF stored in the phone memory but not if you try to open a PDF stored on the memory card.

E70 no longer found with Software Updater (works w...

I've updated my E70-2 before using the software updater. Even before the update was available, it would tell me at least that no update was available.
A few days ago I ran it again to see if anything new had come out . The Software Updater updated itself and rstarted. Now, it cannot find my phone at all. Nokia PC Suite still finds it just fine, but the Software Updater claims it isn't found.
I've already tried doing a hard reset on my phone for another reason but that didn't fix it. I noticed if I had the nokia connection manager open it would see the E70 just fine.
Any ideas?

The download worked better with Firefox not sure why. At the bottom of the page after the captcha>> slow down load is the Free link, it took about 4 minutes to download on my test.

After PC Suite upgrade Nokia E70 is not recognized

Nokia E70 phone and out-of-the-box PC Suite, works fine.
The PC Suite informs me that I should upgrade the software, and I did with one boot. But now, after software upgrade the E70 phone is no longer recognized and my Windows XP states; unrecognized USB device.
Any help?

Try to go to device manager and highlight the unknown device, right click and select uninstall. Then boot PC, connect the phone again and see if it installs the drivers now properly. Also choosing another USB port might help. Make sure you select PC Suite USB mode in phone when you connect the cable

Great Firmware for E70 from the E61i?

Hello!
After wining an E61i recently and comparing the performance to my E70 I noted that the E61i software handles the memory far-far better than my E70 with the 3.x firmware. (The E61i had more than 20 MB free system memory after 2 days, while my E70 can get down to 11-12 MB in one day.)
As I noticed previously that the Firmware numbers of the E70 and the E61 for the 3.x firmware have been identical - sending the message that the firmware for the two phones are identical - I started to wonder, whether the firmware of the E61i would also run on the E70 especially because it is closer hardware wise than the E61 (without the i).
It would be great if Nokia would just release the same firmware for the E70 which they have now on the E61i.
I have had a discussion with Nokia Care, and here is the most relevant part:
"I was aware of the fact you wrote in your answer, that each phone has their own firmware updates. Acctually this was the very reason why I contacted you, to request from you to release the same firmware software awailable for the E61i also for the E70 so I would be able to upload it on my E70. If the firmware software for the E61i would be able to run on the E70 also, than it is only a matter of making the same software availableto be uploaded on the E70. That is what I am asking for.
I am happy to see that in your latest answer you do not claim any more that the E61i firmware would not run on the E70 but you only say, that it is not possible to upload that firmware on the E70. That is great news for
me, as it hints that it might just work fine on the E70 also if You make that exact same software available for the E70.
That is what I have been asking for.
I hope this clarifies my point, so could you please check with the E-series phone developers whether the firmware of the E61i would run on my E70? And so if it does, please release it for the E70 also!"
Nokia Care could not advise in this matter and they sent me here.
How should we proceed from here?

I forgot to mention that I love my E70 and would like to unlock it to full potential by better memory handling.
The memory handling of the E61i is fantastic!
If they would not say that it is without FP1 I would belive it is an FP1 device...

E70 doesn't work with WPA/WPA2!

Does anybody know if there is any chance that E70 will work with WPA/WPA2 encryption? Found it is not working with my home router configured to WPA but works with WEP. However WEP isn't strong protection and I'd prefer WPA. I just took phone to see it's capabilities before buying but lack of WPA would stop me from purchase - WM devices never had such trouble
'd like to hear from someone who do really know if this device will ever work with WPA and maybe it could do now.
PS. have installed latest firmwares to the router and mobile phone.

Trying to connect new E70

I just purchased a New E70 Smartphone. The reason I bought a Nokia is because of all the brands it has the best Linux support (at least the largest Linux user base)
But immediately I noticed that I was unable to connect the phone to my PC via the USB data cable. When I first plugged in the phone to my home laptop, the laptop crashed with a kernel panic error message (not good!) But later when I tried to plug in the phone at work (where I have a number of virgin workstations to choose from) I found that it was not even being recognised. Also, I no longer got the option on the phone to choose which type of connection I wanted the USB to be (i.e. PCSuite, Data, IP)
I then tried Bluetooth, which I have to say works with most things. It worked on all my linux boxes and a test XP box I have at work. But when I tried with my VMWare XP machine, PCSuite gives me an error "Cannon use the connection type. Check that all the needed hardware, software and drivers are available."
(To use bluetooth in VMWare I am using a USB Bluetooth Dongle)
I am using an IVT CN-BTU3 dongle, but I don't that is th problm since I am able to discover my phone (and all those around me) and use the bundled utilities to manipulate the phone.
Any ideas on how to get the Bluetooth to work or even the USB cable.

After 4 weeks, I actually received a call from Nokia!
Since I had already solved the problem by buying a DKU-2 cable it was a short conversation, but the tech assured me that the CA-53 cable that came with the phone does work, but he did admit that frequently they do need to "fiddle" with the software to get it to work.
They promised that they would submit a FAQ on what "fiddle" means, but I still haven't seem anything.
What I don't understand is that in my small sampling 4 out of 5 people had the same problem I did and the DKU-2 cable fixed their problem immediately. Which would support my claim that the DKU-2 cable is superior, yet the DKU-2 cable is cheaper (at least on websites) then the the CA-53?
So why include a CA-53 in the first place??
Anyway, my problem is sorted so I hope this thread helps others.

Won't Open on E70

I recently bought a Nokia E70, which came with "Adobe PDF" preinstalled. I was able to open some PDFs when I first got it, but now I can't even open the program. When I click on "Adobe PDF", the screen paints the background, stalls for about a second, then returns me to the "Office" menu.
Attempting to open PDFs via the web browser elicits a similar response, where the screen will clear, paint the background, stall for one second, then return me to the browser screen.
Unfortunately, I don't believe I can reinstall this program, as it's in ROM. Is there an error log that might be getting generated that I can examine? How should I attempt to troubleshoot this?

Use AppZapper (free trial)
Install it and open it.
Drag the iTunes app to the window, and "zap" it to the trash. You'll be asked for a password.
Then you should be able to download and reinstall it.

E70 - USB cable connection hangs

Hi All, My E70 usb cable connection gets disconnected regularly both on my desktop and laptop computers (USB 2). Very annoying when trying to download something and your connection is gone. Any remedies? Software updater tells me my firmware has no updates (1.0610.05.07 RM10). Thanks for any suggestions to correct problem.

Accented characters on E70

Does anyone know if there's an easy way to input accented characters (like é en ä) on the E70 with the phone folded open? I would have expected that switching to Dutch would change the input mode such that pressing for instance e and ' consecutively would give an é, but no such luck. Right now, the only way of entering accented characters that I know of using the full keyboard is holding the control key while pressing the ascii code of the desired character, which is inconvenient even for the few characters for which I know the ascii code by heart. Alternatively, one can close the full keyboard and use the numerical keypad to cycle through the available characters, but constantly switching between the full keyboard and the numerical keyboard is'n really my idea of convenient text input. The capitalization help is a feature I'd like to turn off.
It hinders me a lot more than it helps.
The first line of any SMS or email I send always begins with a lowercase letter - very unprofessional - because the UI has already pressed the shift key. When I press the shift key, to capitalize, it un-capitalizes for me.
I can't correct this habit of hitting the shift key each time I want to capitalize a letter - no other GUI does this to me. Normally, when you begin a sentence, you type a capital letter. But if the phone's UI sees a period, it automatically presses Shift for you.
This means every time you abbreviate something and use a period midsentence in an SMS, the next leter is capitalized, viz. This example.
or "it hinders my typing in emails, sms, etc. And is really annoying. this uncapitalized sentence would be another example."
Anyway how do I turn the thing off because it only wastes my time.
I find myself trying to outwit and predict this auto-cap behavior and I'm tired of it.
How do I turn it off?

E70 can only connect with Linksys by Easy WLAN

I have an E70 since apr 2007 and used it without problems.
I bought a new router : Linksys Ultra RangePlus N Router.
Then I configured the router and my three other devices: laptop, Maemo N810 internet tablet and my HP WLAN printer connected without a problem.
But not my phone.
I set up WPA/WPA2 and filled in the key.
I see my router in the list of accessible Wifi hotspots and when I try to connect but then it says 'No WLAN network found'.
Restarting the phone and router did not help.
I removed MAC address filtering (despite my phone's MAC address is in the filter), did not help.
I put the Mixed mode (B/G/N) to Mixed (B/G) and then it said 'WPA key authentication failed'. Filling in the WPA key on the phone did not help.
Then I set on the phone TKIP encryption disabled, and then the router doen not appear anymore in the list.
And then I tried Easy WLAN , I selected my router SSID and filled in the key and Voila it worked.
But why is it not in the list of accessible Wifi hotspots ? Now I have to fill in the key every time when I connect to my own hotspot because I can only access it via Easy WLAN.
Any ideas on this ?

How to transfer my Nokia 6600 backup to E70 ?

About a month ago I sold my Nokia 6600 and got Nokia E70.
Before I sold the Nokia 6600 I did a backup using the PC Suite.
Now how can I transfer my stuff from the backup to my E70?

There is NO cable connectivity with the PC, but you can use the Bluetooth. Download the OVI_Suite and install on your PC.. If your PC is not Bluetooth enabled, simply buy a Bluetooth USB Dongle which may available for approx. $ 5. Connect the phone to PC and in OVI Suite SYNC the messages. You may also sync other important data (Contacts, etc) from the phone.

E70 Memory Full

I'm getting a memory full message on my E70 phone, but when I look at the memory (C directories. I have no files. When this happened in the past I reloaded the software, which corrected the problem. There must be a better way? Currently my phone memory has 55.81M used. Can someone help?

My experience is that E70 needs a lot of space for graphics, with the notable exception of Nokia Maps. I frequently get "memory full" using my Opera 8.6x browser when I have 40 MB of memory free (not used), especially if I am viewing a largish image. Sometimes I can carry on, at others I have to exit and try again.
Mine is being repaired right now and I have bought an E61i as "backup" - it takes a lot to get the E61i to produce the "memory full" msg. - a few applications in memory, even not being used, helps provike the message.

Which is better or E70

E70 has:
- 352 x 416 or 416 x 352 resolution (best after E90 secondary display..)
- Keypad & qwerty
- WLAN & 3G
- With BT GPS dongle best GPS solution possible (SIRF III)
I just wonder why people have other devices then E70? Example N95 has lower resolution, worse GPS compared to BT dongle with E70 (also usable indoors when dongle outside in range). 2M camera is perferct if you are going to send images also (so N95 example has much larger image and video file size with default settings)
Compared to E90, E 70 is smaller, both has qwerty and two display modes. In E90, other display is smaller and other little bit wider:
