E71 - GPS and 3G

Hello,
I am considering purchasing an E71. Two questions:
1. I see that the GPS is an AGPS. Does that mean that I have to have some cellular data transfer constantly going on or just initially while I am being located? Is it possible to use the GPS without any data transfer whatsoever (like I do on my HTC TyTN II currently)? I would be storing maps on an SD card and using some sort of navigation software of course.
2. Is 3G fully supported by the E71 at this point in the US and what do I have to look for if I am purchasing this phone to make sure that it is compatible.
Thanks in advance.

Hi omaryassine
As long as there is no real time traffic information facility in application, although this would either be extra cost or easily disabled.

I have never used GPS before, i got E71 last week, it seems that there is an inbuilt gps receiver in it. From the discussion here it looked like i still need something else to use the GPS. You mentioned 'Mapping', does E71 come with this program or do i need to get it from somewhere? Can you tell me how i can use the GPS in the E71 without paying additional charges? Many thanks.

    Hi kr33
You might like to look at ExtGPS here although this refers to accessing internal GPS by another device:

  • E71 GPS and 410.21.010 phone software update

GPS worked pretty well with the previously installed phone software (200.....).
I have just got the last available level (410.21.010) installed and GPS connection isn't working anymore, or at last awfully slow connecting to satellites (tens of minutes).

Same here but thankfully Google Maps is still working fine.

    Hi there,
I'm having exact the same issue with my iPhone4 and IOS 7.04. I upgraded to 7.1.1 to see if this would fix my GPS problem. Unfortunately it's not resolved by the upgrade. I've tried everything I could and found on the internet, but nothing helped me out. All other location services work when it comes to global positioning. But when it comes to more accurate positioning it failes and is way off. When I use the free app GPS Status it gives me the same results as you describe: 1,141m off and before it was much more accurate. The only way to get GPS accurate is to connect to a WiFi-hotspot.
    Open for any suggestion.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Using Nokia 5800 GPS and accepting a call

Hi, I was wondering if there was a way to answer calls while the GPS is on on my Nokia 5800 Navigation Edition.  Currently, when I use the GPS and someone calls, I tap the answer button, but I get a message that says not allowed.  I was looking around in the settings, but can't find anything.  I was hoping there would be a way to answer the call and turn on the speakerphone so I can drive and talk at the same time.  Anyway know if this is possible?
    Thanks!

Getting my first call during active turn-by-turn navigation, I wondered about this strange behaviour too. As it is I dont see any green phone icon on the navigation screen. With the terminal placed in the included windscreen fixture, it is hardly traffic safe to have to press many buttons to get the handsfree activated! Nokia could consider another option on the main screen when a call is waiting to be accepted, for going directly to speakerphone-mode, or at least a configurable option within the maps application. As of now it jumps back to the maps app, which induces the added (two) press of the application switch button. I suppose buying a separate handsfree kit might 'solve' this basic issue, but that should really not be needed out-of-the-box with a dedicated navigation edition. If someone figures a setting that I have overlooked, I would be pleased to get a hint, thx.

  • An appeal to Nokia - GPS and time

This is an appeal to Nokia to create products that make use of the fact that GPS receivers can give accurate time.
I'm an amateur astronomer, and GPS and Java-enabled mobile phones are an absolute godsend - I can whip out my phone and, with a built-in GPS and the right software, it will figure out where I am and hence what is visible in the sky.
EXCEPT that what is visible in the sky is also dependent on the time. And sometimes, having access to accurate time can make all the difference.
For instance, I am currently working on updating software I wrote to calculate the circumstances of total solar eclipses - something that a GPS-enabled mobile phone is perfect for. And a couple of seconds error in the phone's clock can make all the difference.
So please please Nokia make use of the fact that GPSes can give (astonishingly) accurate time.

To sync to GPS time on your Nokia phone, you need either Free TimeSync or FreeTimeBox,
These are free ware apps which allow you to sync to GPS time.
here's a link to Free TimeBox
    http://nucellphone.com/freetimebox-v1-06-for-nokia-s60v5
Its the newest version compatible for s60v5, but AFAIK it should work on non touch phones as well.

  • When downloading from my laptop to GPS, the time taken causes my computer to eject the transfer because it has extended beyond the setting in the computer. This has happened before when trying to update the GPS and that time a Apple technician instructed

I'm try to update my GPS. I download the new info for the GPS to the laptop. Then I connect the GPS the laptop and start the download to the GPS. But this can take hours to transfer. Because the time needed is beyoun what the computer is program, so the connection is ejected. I've been thru this one other time while updating the GPS and it was than the an Apple technitian told me how to disable the auto eject because of the set time limit.

You can sync them via your computer's iTunes : connect the iPad to your computer and select it in your computer's iTunes, and then select its Photos tab :
And on that tab select the folder that the photos that you want to copy are in and sync/apply that selection to your iPad.
To remove the photos from the Photos app you will need to do similar to above, but select and sync an empty folder (you can't delete synced photos directly in the Photos app, instead they are deleted by not including them in the next photo sync).
Or you could email them to yourself and use 'open in' in the Mail app to copy them to the Photos app

    will that help?

When you use your GPS does your iPhone get hot enough to shutdown?  The reason I ask is that I have run my GPS app with the screen brightness set to near max connected to power for hours.  My iPhone got hot, but didn't shutdown.

Thanks Meg St._Clair , anyway i've read some articles says, the only A-GPS device is using either mobile network or Wi-Fi for location service, so i believe if using it while flying, it couldn't detect the location, but with GLONASS, it will, because it is an alternative GPS System. I dont know, maybe im wrong.
A-GPS is real GPS. It stands for Assiseted GPS. The iPads with cellular have a GPS. They use WiFi and cellular to assist the GPS in locking on more quickly. The GPS is assisted by the WiFi and cellular. It will work just fine while flying.
WiFi ony iPads rely on WiFi for location services. They will not work while flying.

  • GPS and Telmap not working

Hey guys, getting a bit fed up with the run around going on. I purchased the Telmap Naviagtor for my Backberry pearl 8120, when it didn't work I contacted them. They told me to contact Orange and Orange said to contact Blackberry. So at the moment my £50 Telmap is being wasted..
My problem is the GPS. Telmap told me to try and refresh my GPS, and when I do so it says 'GPS Location Update Failed'. It only searches for a split second. Because this isn't working, Telmap can't locate me at all.
If anyone has any advice it is greatly appreciated.

Is your GPS in the device works independently? If not go to your carrier and ask for resolution from them.

  • E71: Why does Google Maps not use GPS and track my...

Why is it that Google maps only gives me a GPS signal accurate to 60-2000m. (depending on where I am)
Nokia Maps 2.0 would follow me down roads and footpaths, but Google maps just gives a rough approximation inside a large circle. My friend had an N95 Black and now an N97, and has testified to the exact same problem.
If I could get Google Maps to work with my GPS I would probably delete Nokia Maps, as it is otherwise mostly inferior.
(I've gone through the laborious process to download Maps 3.0 and it is pretty rubbish to be honest - big, bloated with inferior maps)
Message Edited by alexjholland on 24-Aug-2009 05:07 PM

Google Maps can be set to use your GPS if your phone is equipped with it.
    Simply run Google Maps...
Options > Tools > Use GPS (check it or uncheck it for on and off, it toggles)
Current version is 3.2.0 which supports layers and Latitude.
The good thing is that it will get a cell tower lock (where supported) first before it establishes a satellite lock so you get a position, albeit approximate, faster.
You can tell it has established satellite lock when a small box on the top right corner of your app shows you "GPS active (x)" where x = number of satellites locked.
Unfortunately, it does not seem to support the magnetometer on the newer phones yet for compass heading.
    Good luck.
