E71, Mail for Exchange and IP addresses

I have been struggling to get M4E working with my new E71 for several weeks.
While it worked immediately upon first configuration on my local Wifi access point, I couldn't get it to work away from my home office.
I'm posting this for information as it may help others in the same situation.
The set-up is a very small business with a Windows SBS 2003 server on a fixed IP address to the ISP. Using the name of the local Exchange server enabled the local arrangement. Having no FQDN, I tried, in vain, to access the server using the fixed IP address. While this works for browsing and OWA, it doesn't work for M4E.
The solution for me was to obtain a free DNS alias from DynDNS.Com - but there are other similar providers.
M4E's Exchange Server should then be specified as www.xxxx.dnsalias.com; where xxxx is your choice at DynDNS and dnsalias.com is the domain chosen (there are other domain options).
In order to enable a Secure Connection on M4E, I configured the SBS firewall to issue a certificate from www.xxxx.dnsalias.com and then 'always permitted' it on the E71 when asked. This puts it into the Trusted Certificate list.
I intend next to go on to try to set up a VPN access point - something I have yet to master!

Hi hascott
You might get your domain name providor to setup an A record for your ipaddress. such as remote.abc.com points to
89.4.43.13, then set your phone to use the a record.
thats how i did it. you can setup a domain name for a few euro. post any questions you have and ill try my best to help ya.
Cheers
John

  • Nokia 5800 - 'Mail for Exchange' and 'Nokia mail'....

    Ok may be a silly question but while looking through my 'installed apps' on my 5800, since i was thinking of 'clearing some stuff out' to make that little bit more memory on the phone (Currently I'm ~ 3/4 full)
    I noticed that although MOST of them (games etc) are already on my memory card there's a few stuck on the phone.
    Many I guess can't be removed (such as 'Symbian OS' stuff, 'OVI Maps' or other 'OVI Store' stuff) but what about programs that seem to be 'duplicates' (i.e. seem to do the same thing) ??
    Why should I have 2 'Map' programs or 2 'Email' program etc ??
    In particular - why should I need to have 'Mail for Exchange' AND 'Nokia Mail' installed at the same time. Both are ~ 1Mb each and both seem to be related to 'Getting Emails onto the phone'
    Can't I just stick to one one them - say 'Nokia Mail' & remove 'Mail for Exchange' ??
    Doinf so will only free up 1Mb of phone memory, but it'll help - or does one program rely on the other ??
    Thanks in advance
    P.S. I've just noticed there's a couple of other programs 'In Phone memory' that seem suspicious.
    One is called 'Chinese Lion (164Kb Supplier: QTEL) and the other is called 'Diamonds' (102kb Supplier: WANGP) - anyone know what these are ??
    Motto: Illegitimis non carborundum

    Most users don't need both, but each has a different purpose which is why both are offered. Nokia Messaging is Nokia's in-house push mail service available for all consumers (currently it requires a certain type of operator subscription, but I understand that is about to change so that it is open to all). Mail for Exchange is primarily for business users whose company uses Microsoft Exchange for corporate mail.
    Likewise, you don't need to Maps apps - GPS-equipped phones always have Nokia/Ovi Maps preisntalled, unless youe phone is an operator-variant from a network which has its own GPS service or you bought the phone second-hand from somebody else, I don't see why it would have another similar application.
    For general memory management, this post which I made in reply to another user with memory issues may help:

  • E72 Mail for Exchange and Hotmail

    Guys,
    I am new to the nokia family and I just acquired teh E-72, though it gives me some headache, I am not willing to give up on it just yet.
    When I set up my work email account (mail for exchange) and my personal (hotmail), it works fine, but I have noticed that if I read any message on my phone it marks as read on my computer, if I deleted any message, it deletes on the computer; this happens for both accounts (business and hotmail). Is this normal? I know that on a blackberry you have the option to sync everything you do on it with the computer/server, but you also have the option not to sync, therefore, anything you do on it will not reflect on your the computer/server. Is there such an option on the E72?

    Are you sure Hotmail marks your emails as read when you read them from your e72? I dont think so since hotmail is pop3 not imap.
    About mail for exchange, that the whole point to sync your mailbox on the fly. Try after you read a message to mark it as unread.

    Good day all
    I would like to know if I can have more than 1 mailbox syncd to my device.

    Go to your outlook web access website and click on the lock and then view certificate. The details and then you can save it in DER format to your desktop.
    Then go to this site:
    http://www.redelijkheid.com/symcaimport/ and insert through the browse button and then copy the link to your phone.
    Then you should be able to download it
    You can also go to your IIS default site on the exchange server and directory security and export your certificate under edit certificate.
    I have tried everything now. I can download my certificate and the valicert from GoDaddy, but the Nokia phone is still saying "do you trust this certificate" every time the phone syncs.
    Our firm have taken the E-phones away now and went over to windows mobile and all of them worked within 10 minutes without any errors.
    The funny thing is that when you try to call nokia, they wont help you with Mail for Exchange, and it is there program
    I know my GoDaddy certificate works on windows mobile phones, so It must be something with Mail for Exchange.
    Every guy I talked to about symbian phones have told me they always gives problems with SSL. I am a bit **bleep**, but can conclude that Nokia is for the private consumer.

  • Mail for Exchange and certificate authentication -...

    Okey, it works on Windows Mobile browser starting 2003 and Blackberry browser since 2007.
    It's not working on these fancy linuxes (moo-boo or moeba or what it's name?)- but well, what else you can expect from poorly tested code with no compatibility or standards in mind?
    I wonder what stopping Symbian to proper support certificates standarts, while they finally manage to support ActiveSync specification. Lazy programmers?  Are they steal too much code from open source?
    Nokia, your devices will never suceed, if you keep making ovi-style "features" instead of things people need to work better. We pay for you phones,  do you remember that?

    I have N82 and installed MFE 3.0 version. My company runs Exchange Active Server  2003 and needs an alphanumeric lock code for phone which is not available on N82.
    Are there ways to enable alphanumeric phone autolock on Nseries? or is this a serious limitation for all Nseries devices? Because i found 5800 XM and N97mini which support this feature.

  • Mail for Exchange and missing emails

    Hi,
    We have a problem with out Mail for Exchange mobile synhronization. All the mails are received in Outlook (Exchange Server) but in MfE some emails are missing. The missing emails are randomly selected inside or outside organization emails. Let's say few emails per day are totally missing inf MfE. What could be the problem? We have e72 mobiles, our Exchange server is 2007 and we are using Forefront 2010 to ISA connection.

  • Mail for Exchange and SSL certificate

    I have a little problem with Mail For Exchange and my Nokia N80. I have self-signed certificate for Exchange mailserver and when I am synchronizing e-mails I got always message: "The site has sent an untrusted certificate. Continue anyway ?". I underestand that my certificate isn't verified by any root authority, but if I have synchronization schedule set at 15 minutes it means I have to confirm this message four times when I am not with my mobile one hour. So question is:
    Is possible to import self-signed SSL certificate into Nokia N80 and set it as trusted ? If yes, please describe me how, because I have tried import the certificate as CER (it was opened just as NOTE on Nokia), I tried to convert it via openssl to PEM (the file was not recognized) etc... Thanks for any help in advance.

  • E71 Mail for Exchange System Error, try again late...

    Hi,
    Please Help!
    I installed MfE 2.7 on my E71, but whenever I try to sync my email and calender, I get a system error.
    It begins to sync the email but after that it doesn't sync the calender and I get the system error. Also each time it tries to sync emails, it retrieves all the mail each time.
    If I sync only the calender, it retrieves all the items and I get a system error. I've pasted the admin log below.
    27/10/2008 10:17:42 start Email sync
    27/10/2008 10:17:53 sync died (11), collection=Email activity=handling commands from server
    27/10/2008 10:22:36 PING Command Requested
    27/10/2008 10:22:42 start Email sync
    27/10/2008 10:23:01 sync died (47), collection=Email activity=handling commands from server
    Does anyone know how to solve this?

    OK - like many on the copius web discussions on this Nokia E71 model/MfE topic I have been getting terminally frustrated with an otherwise great phone.
    A trawl through the websites gave me lots of things to try, but most didn't work.
    Our large corporate IT dept also were left scratching their heads, and resorted to a full reset, which cured the problem briefly, but as with others' experience it soon returned (also having to fully reconfig is a pain in the proverbial). Things suggested on the discussion sites like disabling Tasks synch, or Secure Connection didn't have any effect.
    The fact that most others with the same phone on our system hadn't experienced the problem seemed to hint at it not being a server issue, but something more localised. The apparent fact that 'Emails' did synch OK, but that the process hung on 'Calendar' synch suggested it was a Calendar issue
    One post mentioned issues with no-finish-date recurring appointments in Calendar, so I investigated these. I found that one or two had no end date, so I gave these items one.
    But interestingly, I also found a high proportion of appointments that had been created last year (09) had end dates like 'Wed 31/03/00' when clearly 'Wed 31/03/10' was intended - was this an odd default in Calendar, or just careless typing? The consequences were that Calendar was possibly wrestling with numerous recurring appts with either 100-year durations, or possibly just hanging on the date confusion - is '00' before or after '10'?.
    Therefore, as a precaution, I checked all my recurring appts like this (the procedure may vary according to your browser):-
    - In Calendar, open each recurring appt in turn;
    - Open the series, not just the individual appointment;
    - Check 'Recurrence';
    - Check that an 'End By' date is there, and that it is not '00';
    - Click OK;
    - Click OK again if warned about exceptions;
    - Cick 'Save & Close'.
    Do this to absolutely all recurring appointments in your Calendar.
    Then do a full resynch (Menu/MfE/Synch Mode/Full Resynch etc).
    I didn't hold much hope of any effect, but Lo!, it did work, and now Emails, Contacts, Tasks, and Calendar all synch fine so far, using Menu/MfE/Mail for Exchange/Options/Synchronise.
    I hope this works for others...let me know if it does.

  • E71 mail for exchange Error

    I am setting up a Nokia E71 phone for exchange mail via the mail for exchange application on the Nokia all settings appear to be fine however when i try to sync email in the log i see an error "Server requires secure connection change profile >connection > secure connection yes"
    The connection is already specified to be secure.

    I'm also struggling to setup Exchange on my E71.
    I'm currently looking to do software updates (I'm using software 211) and hoping the problems go away in the new cell software.
    I put in all the settings, and it just fails to connect, yet, when we check our logs (Linux) we can see the phone making connection.
    Thoughts?

  • E71 Mail for Exchange problem

    I've set up a few of these adn had no problems but yesterday I set up 3 off E71-b exactly the same as always and all now have the same problem:  when powering on you get the message "allow to send and receive......" answering "yes" then gives "testing network" and then then the Email setup wizard starts again. If you then cancel the Wizard the phone synchs properly with Head Office's Exchange Server.   It means the users have to exit teh wizard at evry start-up.    Any help would be much appreciated.

    Guys -- I had the same problem but I think I figured it out. Menu>MfE>Mail for Exchange>Content synced> Synchronize Calendar (choose yes, ditto Contacts and Tasks)>then follow the stupid menu logic that doesn’t actually save any changes unless you save each individual change or something and finally choose “in case of conflict server always wins”> and double check to make sure it is always looking for changes. I tested it with new calendar and contact entries on my corp. mail account and they showed up almost immediately on the e71.
     Cripes. Good luck.

  • E71 - Mail for exchange syncs calendar only partly

    I'm pretty new to using the Mail for Exchange (latest version from Ovi) application in my E71, had a 3rd party software that handled pim sync before.
    Any how, the company has moved from Lotus Notes to Microsoft Exchange 2010 and in that process migrated data from Notes to Exchange. For some reason the Mail for Exchange application syncs only entrys changed or created in Exchange, older entrys migrated from Notes unchanged wont show up in the handset.
    I have verified with handsets from other vendors that this is not an server/active sync error, fore example Apples iPhone will sync every entry. How come, anyone has any ideas?

    Go to OVI store on your E71 and download Mail for Exchange.

  • N8: Mail for exchange and changing server name?

    Hello,
    I did setup company mail for my new N8 using mail for exchange. I entered email address and username and phone automatically discovered company mail server name. I would like to change that server information but I can't. If I go mail for exchange properties I can't edit server name?! How can I manually set up server name?

    Hi,
    I had the same Problem with my N8. The only solution was to delete "Mail for Exchange" profile on the device. After that all contacts, calendar entries and mails wehre deleted.
    Now you start from scratch... and create a new Mail for Exchange Profile with the correct settings.
    Maybe It's a Problem with your company Mailserver (Active Sync/ Autodiscover) Setup. In my case the autodiscover Funktion ist not correct configured on the mailserver. During Mail for Exchange configuration I will be asked for the correct mailservername. I'm not shure what happend if the autodiscovery function is properly set up. Maybe you will never see a dialog to put in your Servername.
