E72 "Activate power saving". Consequences????

 I want to know DETAILS what happens when I push ON/OFF button and select "Activate power saving".
What are the negative effects of this?
Noise cancellation still works or NOT?
Does GPS work?
What else???
"The Nokia E72 features active noise cancellation and navigation as well as a digital compass."
The latest USER GUIDE says NOTHING ABOUT THIS! I used Ctrl-F to find "power saving". Basically nothing is said what happens in power saving mode!!!!
Languages: English, Finnish

it disables all UI effects (Theme transitions, etc.),
lowers display brightness to minimum. Brightness option in display settings is disabled.
switches the processor to a more power efficient mode (performance is noticeably lower)
instantly turns off connections when they aren't needed (e.g. WLAN connection gets disabled instantly after you open a web page, if you want to open another one then the device connects and then quickly disconnects again). As a result, push mail gets disabled. You will have to manually sync mails as long as power save mode is enabled.
Noise cancellation still works. GPS still works - in the same way as with the WLAN connection described above

  • N8 - Activate power saving mode

    Dear all,
    Usually when I go to sleep I setup my N8 phone to power saving mode, however I have problem to desactivate it.
    My phone have crashed for six hours until shutdown.
    How can I turn off my phone under those conditions? No keys worked.
    my regards,

    If your phone freezes up completely to the extent that no keys work try this:
    Hold the power button down for at least 8 seconds, when it vibrates release the button. The phone should now reboot and behave normally.
    I do not know why it froze up in the first place, many things can cause a phone to freeze or crash. More details would be required from you to troubleshoot that problem.

  • Nokia N8: Possible Power Saving Mode Bug

    Dear All,
    For the past week, I've change the way I use my Nokia N8. I decided to set it up in power saving mode during the evening. There is no point for it to be on 3.5G if nobody is using it. Unfortunately, I seem to have hit a problem. At the moment, my N8 is using a pay as you go sim card from O2 and this card is in the phone 24/7.
    When I activate power saving mode, the phone re-registers with the network and the maximum speed it will have will be EDGE. In the morning, when I take my phone I disable power saving mode and the phone re-registers again with the network.
    Having said that, on multiple ocassions, my phone showed some worrying symptoms. For example, a few das ago, when I disabled power saving mode, the phone did not show the 3.5G icon and I could not make any phone calls. The coverage was up and down. You might say that, it did not show 3.5G because you had no 3.5G you idiot. That is not true, where I live, there is 3.5G everywhere.
    I was shocked that I could not make any phone calls. After a few reboots and taking SIM card out, I managed to get the phone in working order.
    Today, the same thing happened. I managed to fix it just a few moments ago. It seems that the power saving mode option has an implementation problem or O2 does not like the way the N8 registers to the network when you enable and disable the said feature.  Has anyone encountered this???

    @m80116, this may well be a solution, but could be problematic if in a weak reception area where only Edge is available ? You could lose data connection completely ! I tend to use Dual mode, and generally don't have an issue, but certainly for anyone living and working in a very strong 3 or 3.5G area it may work very well, wish I had the luxury of being able to use 3G Only

  • N8 power saving bug

    Hi all,
    As N8 user should know that when you activate power saving mode, it will switch your network to GSM mode and by right it should also switch it back to dual mode when i deactivate power saving mode. But sometimes it won't. It will just stay with GSM mode.
    Anyone facing similar issue?

    Not unusual. sometimes it takes a certain threshold for the signal to be switched to 3G. I'm from the Philippines and this happens all the time. In fact, I welcome the GSM backwards compatibility of these phones as 3G congestion causes a lot of headaches for me. e.g. SMS not sending; calls not connecting. So best best is using GSM.

  • Printer power saving features activates and deactivates at random

    I have a C8022A all in one 8500 printer which has a built in Power saving feature that is supposed to put the print6er in sleep mode after sevaral minutes of non use and turn on printer when a new print job is sent to it.Duringg the first 4-5 months of use it did that - now it seems sometime to go into sleep mode 4 hours after it stopped being used and coming on at random 2-4 hours later for no apparent reason - talked to 2 techs in India with HP chat support but it was useless, and could not get through to live 800 support - tried 5-6 times.!

    Richard,
    Open Energy Saver preferences. While there, unplug the power connector from the MBP? Does the display dim a little bit? If not, toggle the Optimization to one of the other settings then back to Normal like you want. Did the display dim? Now plug the power back in. Did it work as expected?
    As for the keyboard, if you want it to remain off in low light conditions, uncheck the Illuminuate keyboard in low light conditions option. You could look at the keyboard brightness keys as setting a max brightness. The keyboard brightness will still fluctuate based on the light level in the room but will only get as bright as the setting you put in.
    Did I make that clear as mud?

    If you don't mind a very dim screen and the lights going out quickly then you can use it all the time.
    It only really makes a difference whilst using your phone. It doesn't save any power if your phone is sat there unused on standby.
    It doesn't reduce the performance of the phone or effect programs.

  • N8 - Power Saving Mode

    Hi,
    I got a bit problem here. My N8 will automatically activate the POWER SAVING MODE once the phone battery goes low. I've set the power saver mode query to "ON" so that the phone will ask wether to activate the power saving mode or not. When I choose "NO" the phone will automatically turn the power saving mode in the background without displaying an icon (the battery icon will appears as a "moon"). The big clock screen saver is set to NONE, the theme effects switch to "OFF" and the light time out will change from 30 seconds (default) to only 5 seconds.
    Any idea or help? ThanX!

    Deactivate the Power Saver Mode via the power key is not working as well. The phone shows that the POWER SAVING MODE DEACTIVATED but the settings still don't change to normal. So far, this was the biggest problem with my N8. I really hope that the upcoming firmware of the N8 will address this issue.

  • Pm-utils-1.4.0-1: aggressive hard drive power saving (often spin-up)

    [sorry, misplaced post. this issue is for package from extra repo]
    Hi all,
    after upgrading from pm-utils-1.3.0-2 to pm-utils-1.4.0-1 I noticed that hard drive on my laptop is stopped and spinned up again too often.
    The reason for this is script introduced in pm-utils-1.4 /usr/lib/pm-utils/power.d/harddrive that activates aggressive power saving. pm-powersafe is triggered after suspend wake-up in my case.
    I noticed that
    # hdparm -B /dev/sda
    /dev/sda:
    APM_level = 1
    in case when laptop runs on battery power, and
    APM_level = 254
    when on AC. And I'm rarely use AC
    Positive effect of this aggressive hard drive power saving is really doubtful as it can shorten your hard drive life significantly and cause apps hung till spin up very often.
    I don't want to bring up a big discussion here, almost the same problem was discussed by ubuntu community
    "Ubuntu's Laptop Killing Bug":
    http://it.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=0 … 4&from=rss
    Currently I manually disabled power saving on hard drive by
    # hdparm -B 255 /dev/sda
    /dev/sda:
    setting Advanced Power Management level to disabled
    APM_level = off
    and disabled /ur/lib/pm-utils/power.d/harddrive by resetting execution flag.
    I monitored spin up cycles count by
    # smartctl -a /dev/sda | grep Start_Stop_Count
    4 Start_Stop_Count 0x0032 100 100 000 Old_age Always - 4715
    It grew significantly before I noticed the problem

  • Using both power saving mode and offline mode caus...

    So I am having a very strange problem. I have been using the Situations App (formerly Nokia Situations) to automatically put my phone into offline mode, and power saving mode over night. 9pm to 6:30am.
    Recently the phone as started refusing to leave the offline mode in the morning. Even if I try to change the profile manually it says "Unable to change profile". The only way I can get out of offline mode is to reboot.
    I uninstalled Situations, and manually put the phone into offline mode and power saving mode. By the morning I had the same issue, stuck in offline mode until reboot. So it's not the App causing the problem. I've tried a soft reset, same problem still.
    I also noticed that over-night (from fully charged before 9pm) to 6:30am I used about 70% of my charge. (A combination of power saving mode and offline mode is killing my battery!)
    I would have to go to work and immediately put my phone on charge! I.e.. 12 hours of offline + power save has drained my battery almost completely.
    Last night I decided to use the Situations App to put the phone into offline mode, BUT NOT activate power save mode.
    This morning the phone had virtually full charge and it had no problem returning to online mode. So it's ONLY if I use BOTH power-save and offline. (Tonight I will try using power-saving mode and NOT offline mode to see if it's only the power-saving mode causing the issue!)
    If I manually enter offline+power-save mode, and then try to return to on-line/non-power-save mode, relatively quickly, i.e.. Not over-night, everything is fine. It's only over night the problems start!
    Any help?
    Rob
    PS. I also have the problem where using HSPA+ causes my phone to drop from the network and stop being able to receive/make phone calls. But disabling HSPA+ works around this for now, I think this problem is unrelated however.

    I have a similar problem. My 808 PureView loses 70% of its charge overnight if I leave it in normal profile without power-saving. To deal with this issue, I started using the situations app to put the phone in power saving mode overnight. That solved the problem (although I never put my phone to offline mode). This is a weird problem because throughout the day my phone doesn't use 70% of charge, but it does overnight while doing nothing!
    I have also experienced the second problem, losing cellular and internet connection, on my 808. I have started a thread to deal with this issue.
    http://discussions.nokia.com/t5/Nseries-and-Symbian-Smartphones/Nokia-808-PureView-loses-cellular-an...
    I believe it is a firmware bug that causes this problem.

  • Nokia 7370 Power Saving Problems

    Hi Everyone
    I just got my nokia 7370 (the gold swivel one from the l'amour collection) and I'm having a minor problem.
    When the phone is inactive it isn't displaying the date and time on a black screen as it should in power saving mode.
    Power saving mode is switched on in settings but it isn't working.
    Can anyone help me with this?
    Any help will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

    well my operator (Videotron) here in Canada, i can only connect via 3G for calling therefore i sort of need 3G to make and receive calls, otherwise it's like being in Offline mode!
    so i can understand this person's issue.
    As i have the same problem.
    Basicly whenever my phone activates Powersaving, it literally disconnects me from the network (no longer able to make and receive calls)
    I am using a Nokia E7

  • Changing to power-saving results in losing picture on the screeen

    Hi,
    Product name: HP Pavilion dv6-6093ex Entertainment Notebook PC support.
    Product number: LM610EA#A2N
    When changing to power-saving GPU, then Radeon got disabled and no picture on the screeen is shown.
    I really had been facing a problem with my Windows 7 Home premium 64Bit, then I have only done a repair install, which
    didn't delete all the drivers and programs. However, before doing the repair install, I was recommended to uninstall AMD
    Readon and Intel(R) Management Engine Interface.(AS shown below). Thus, I have uninstalled the AMD Readon, and Intel(R)Management Engine Interface.
    Upgrading Windows will affect the following devices and/or programs:
    These devices might not work properly after the upgrade. Before upgrading, we recommend updating the drivers for these
    devices. Cancel the upgrade, open Control Panel and search for "update device drivers", or go to the device manufacturer's
    website to search for updated drivers.
    System devices: Intel(R) Management Engine Interface
    These programs might not work properly after the upgrade. We recommend uninstalling these programs before upgrading. Cancel the upgrade, open Control Panel, and search for "uninstall a program". (Note: Programs marked as * can be safely reinstalled after the upgrade.)
    ATI Catalyst Control Center *
    When the repair install got completed, then I found that Grphics adapter is still functining well since there are no ! mark in front of the adapters: Intel(R) HD Graphics Family and Radeon(TM) HD 6770M in the device manager.
    Once I changed the GUP from High-performance GPU to Power-saving GPU, then I lost the pircuter on the Screen.
    When I lost the picuter on the screen while on Windows in normal mode, I booted to the safe mode, then opened the device manager, and I saw that Radeon(TM) HD 6770M was disabled
    To get picture again,  I enabled Radeon(TM) HD 6770M (screen shot below) while in Safe mode:
    When restarting my PC and started Windows in the noraml mode,  the picture returned on the screeen.
    Whenever changing to power-saving GPU, then the same problem happens.
    Will I need to reinstall the AMD High-Definition Graphics Driver, although there are no ! mark in front of the Intel(R) HD Graphics Family and Radeon(TM) HD 6770M  in the device manager?

    Thank you so much indeed,
    Could you please take some of your precious time out to really answer these questions below of mine?
    Firstly:: I really have run this Utility(amdcleanuputility) to remove all components of the prvious installation of AMD Radeon and Mobile Inte Graphics.
    I was propmted that  tool will do as it is shown below in the screen shot.
    I agreed. Then, it completed. Is 'AMD cleanup utility' recommended by you?
    Then, the graphics adapters in the device manager became as follows:
    Secondly: I think that it is now the point to reinstall AMD High-Definition Graphics Driver_Software Packaging Numbr(SP55092)_Driver Version 8.882.2.3000.
    Thirdly: Moreover, I would be saying that I lost the audio on my System once the (amdcleanuputility) has completed, although its icon is still intact(screen shot below)
    Must I need to reinstall IDT High-Definition (HD) Audio Driver_Sp55094_Version6.10.6345.0????
    Finally::  in your link about downloading the drivers for my product name. I found Driver-Graphics (5) . However, all what I need is the finall one which is an already-downloaded file with me. Could you please let me know what about the other four graphics drivers????????

  • Power saving tipps for desktop PCs

    Hi, lately I've been trying to make my boxes at home (router, desktop, fileserver) more power efficient. My energy bill was always kinda high and I think that I waste too much energy.
    Most of my experience with computer related power saving comes from my laptop (maximize batterie time ). I've already taken some steps to minimize power consumption but I'm not sure what else could be done. If you have some ideas please let me know!
    Some details about the steps I've taken so far:
    router (24/7)
    Its an really old stripped down mashine (P2) that is underclocked (hard).
    It's currently running pfsense (FreeBSD based) that is installed on an old hdd. I was thinking about getting a small usb-stick and running the system on that one... would that be a good idea? (lifetime etc)
    fileserver
    Runs only when needed. In addition the cpu is undervolted (ondemand). Should be ok I guess.
    desktop (24/7)
    This one is a bit more tricky. It has pretty much up to date (-> power hungry) hardware but needs to run 24/7 most of the time (ssh, ftp, p2p). Downgrading can only be temporary because sometimes I need the performance (casual gaming, video encoding, photoshop etc...).
    So far I did only 3 things:
    1. hdds go to sleep when they are not used for 15 minutes --> hdparm -S 180
    2. cpu undervolting --> cpufreq-set -g powersave
    3. grafik card underclocking --> nvclock -n 250 -m 350 (nvidia only)
    I'm a bit frightened to underclock the grafik card even lower... my screen got blocky and froze once while testing. ^^'
    2 & 3 are done with a small script that I run when I leave the pc:
    #!/bin/bash
    if [ "$(cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_governor)" = "performance" ];
    then cpufreq-set -g powersave && nvclock -n 250 -m 350 && xset dpms force off
    else cpufreq-set -g performance && nvclock -r
    fi
    I've a shortcut for the script on my keyboard but some automation would be better if I think about it... triggered by afk time or sth like this.
    If you guys have ideas what else could be tweaked please let me know!

    Raccoon1400 wrote:Using a flash drive instead of a HD may save a bit. It may be significant, it may not, but every little bit would help. Flash drive would take much less power. Maybe several times less.
    You could also check out solid state drives for the desktop. I know very little about them, so it may be a good or bad idea.
    Yeah flash drives uses less power but I wouldn't use them for a desktop pc. The price per GB is far worse compared to normal HDDs and the blocks can only be written around 100000 times... for a system disk this is not really acceptable (caching, temporary files etc). These SDDs are more designed for small (sub)notebooks imo because they have no mechanical parts what makes them more reliable.
    For the router this would not a problem though.
    omgwtfbyobbq wrote:A stick would definitely be cheaper! The HD power draw isn't as low as I thought it was but it's close. The power supply can be a huge draw like I mentioned before. There's a 20W and 40W difference at idle between a earthwatts 380 power supply and a couple generic power supplies I had lying around. I originally though my PIII used way more than my C7-D system, but after swapping power supplies I found out the PIII used less at idle than the C7-D even w/ two sound cards, a network card, and a video card.
    Yeah a quality PSU will probably save allot. Currently the router uses an old generic power supply, so this is really sth i should look into. I have an enermax noisetaker that is not used atm so I'll see what difference it makes compared to the currently used PSU.
    The power consumption of HDDs is really not that low (thx for the link). Around eight watts (Idle) for the tested HDDs. So putting the disks to sleep when they're not used is probably a good idea for the most people that leave the PC running for longer times. My desktop has 5 HDDs, so even when they are not really used they need around 40 watts for nothing. Old HDDs (like the one in my router) will probably need more power.
    I've asked a friend of mine to lent me his digital wattage meter. With this I can make some detailed tests to see what tweaks are really useful to save power.
    I'll post the results when I'm done (probably on the weekend). What I can say now is that the few tweaks I made on my desktop PC (first post) will probably save a bit. The temperature of the CPU and GPU drops around 10-15 °C, the ambient temperature drops allot as well. This pretty heavy considering that the case has a good airflow (2 80er fans in front of the hdds and one 120er fan at the back).

  • Mirroring LG Monitor stuck in Analog Power Saving Mode

    I have a macbook from 2006, and just attained an LG L1900J LCD monitor. When I connect the monitor to my macbook using a DVI to VGA Cable attached to a Mac mini DVI to VGA adapter I get no picture on the monitor and the message "Analog Power Saving Mode" appears before the monitor goes black and then switches into sleep mode.
    I have used the Switch application to try and fix the issue, and I have also adjusted the resolution many times as it appears my Macbook recognizes the monitor but an image just won't appear on its screen. I just ordered a Male to Male DVI cable and mini DVI to DVI adapter to see if a digital connection would work. Does anyone know if this will work or of another solution to my problem? Thanks.

    So I ordered a Mini DVI-DVI Dynex adapter and Male to Male DVI Cable off ebay for very cheap, and to my surprise, this set-up seemed to shake the monitor out of "Analog Power Saving Mode" into "Digital" since its a digital set-up and now I have a fully functioning, mirroring monitor. So I would suggest switching to DVI to correct your issue.
