E75: SIP & USB mode

Hello everybody.
I've just bought an e75 and I think that Nokia did a great job with this phone.
I'm using almost all the features of the device since I have an UMTS carrier with 10GB/month of Internet.
So far there are only two things that I want to report, one probably as a minor bug and one that instead I think is a Nokia choice (hopefully I'm wrong!!) that I don't agree with.
The first issue that I noticed is that when Fring in running (I guess it would be the same with any application installed on the memory card) and I connect the phone to my PC using the USB cable, Fring stop running and if I look for it in the application folder, also the icon is missing.
If I unplug the USB cable everything comes back to normal.
I've tried to figure out why I'm having this behavior and the only reason I could find is that, since Fring is installed on the external memory card, when plugged the phone driver *lock* the memory card and all the files (thus the applications as well) can not be accessed any more. It makes sense in terms of safety but I would prefer the phone to lock the files that have been using (running applications) so that I can use all the applications I want while the phone is charging.
The second issue is about SIP. The phone is capable of SIP calls (without using Fring) BUT unfortunately I could only place SIP calls using Gizmo. I can configure another SIP providers and the login is successful as stated in the "Registered" word. The problem is that every time I try to perform a SIP call, only the Gizmo provider can be used to place calls. I know that this is a *well known issue* in recent Nokia phones. And is a commercial choice. Still, I'm here to ask Nokia to unlock this feature and let the users decide which SIP provider to use. I bought an original Nokia phone with no brands exactly because I want to be free to do anything I want with it.
Please Nokia, let us use the SIP Internet calls without any restriction.
(Or at least write in the specs that "SIP calls can be placed ONLY with Gizmo carrier".....does it sound so crazy?)
For the rest it's a GREAT phone. Thanks Nokia for giving us such good devices.
Regards.

Hi optimiser_ss,
Sorry for the delay in answering you. The first thing I did was to install the "SIP VoIP Settings". In this way you have extra settings in the "Control Panel ->Settings .net". If you don't install it, you can configure your SIP providers but you can't use them to place VoIP calls (Thus, as configured from Nokia, it's an useless configuration).
Once you install the  "SIP VoIP Settings" application, you first need to configure your SIP providers in the "Control Panel->Settings->Connections->SIP configurations".
I'm currently using an Italian SIP VoIP carrier, Eutelia.
Now you have to create an Internet Telephony profile using the SIP providers previously configured.
go to "Control Panel ->Settings .net". Go to "Advanced VoIP settings" and then to VoIP services.
You should see only the Gizmo VoIP configuration. If you click on the Options button you can choose the "New" command to create a new VoIP profile.
Once you do it, you should be ready to use the Internet Telephony service.
The first time you will try to place a VoIP call you will be asked if you want to enable the VoIP service. Of course you have to say yes and you will see a small white icon close to the one of the wifi connection.
Depending on your provider you can play with the codecs to find the optimal solution.
Remember anyway that you can download the SIP VoIP settings documenation to have full details on the configuration.
Some other comments on the SIP VoIP features of this phone. Probably I'm pushing it to the limit but I want to receive also incoming calls through my SIP account thus I leave the phone "always-on". Since it's always connected, the battery last hours. I think that the best approach would be to use the VoIP feature only when you need, to place calls.
The battery can't handle the fact that you staty always on, at least with an UMTS 3G/3.5G connection. Probably wifi would have better performance. From this side it seems that Fring has a better management of the power consumption but I have to check it out better.
Another annoying thing is that it's VERY tricky to switch between the UMTS and WiFi connections for the SIP VoIP service. If you configure your SIP provider to use your WiFi connection, let's say at home, when you go out and you might need to connect using the UMTS connection it doesn't switch automatically or ask you to change the access point. But even if you want to manually do it it's a nightmare!
If you want to edit the configuration you can't because the provider is locked because it's in use. And if you switch the phone off and on again the VoIP will start automatically thus you will not be able to change the configuration again.
I solved the problem creating a "Fake" SIP provider. When I want to switch between WiFi and UMTS I change the configuration in the ".Net Settings" of my provider and change the SIP profile to use from "eutelia" to "Fake".
After that I still have to reboot the phone and only after that I can edit the SIP configuration of the provider to make it use another Access Point. I would be SO happy if somebody tell me a smarter way to obtain these results!!!
Remember also that the quality of the call in terms of audio and latency strongly depends on your UMTS carrier as well.
Hope it will help.
Regards.

Connect your device to your computer using the USB cable. You must connect your device directly to your computer, not through a USB hub or other intermediate device.
Now the tricky part. Hold the Volume Up button on the device and insert the USB cable. After the large USB symbol appears on screen, let go of the Volume Up button. If you see the HP logo instead of the large USB symbol, you may have let go of the Volume Up button prematurely. If this occurred , wait until your device boots up, shut down your device and then repeat step 2.
Windows will find your device and may offer to install two different drivers.
When asked to install drivers of OMAP, select No, not at this time.
When asked to install drivers for Palm Novacom (bootie), select Yes and let the drivers install. This may take a while. Once the drivers have been installed, the Next button will become available in webOS Doctor.
    Click Next.
Do not disconnect your device from the computer during the update process.
When the Reset Complete screen appears, click Done.
Wait a few minutes for your device to reset.

  • Connected in a non-compatible USB mode?

Well, first of all, I guess I should "howdy from a newbie"
I bought my Lumia 820 a few days back, and after having a few set-up quirks, things seem to be going quite well.
I can only see one problem left, and that's as the title suggests, and was wondering if you guys would be able to help with that one.
When I connect the phone up to the PC (running Windows XP SP3), and having Nokia Suite 3.6.36 running, it comes up telling me that the phone is 'connected in a non-compatible USB mode', preventing me from doing anything in Nokia Suite.
Any clues as to what I would need to do to correct this please?

  • Nokia 5310 connected in a non compatible USB mode

Hi , I have tried to connect my nokia 5310 to my computer in printing & media apps mode for use with Nokia music site , but each time I keep getting "connected in a non compatible USB mode   " .
When I connect to Nokia PC suite there is no problem.
I have the latest PC suite installed .
Can someone help , please !

did you try the pc suite mode in order to use the nokia music? that might actually work for you or mass media either one of those might work better than 'print' mode

  • Connected in a non compatible USB mode! Nokia 5310...

Aghhhhhhhhhhh.................. please can someone help me. I have been able to transfer music to my phone with no problems until yesterday. When I plugged in the USB cable to put a new album on my phone, I chose the usual printing and media option, and a sign comes up on my PC saying that my phone is connected in a non compatible USB mode and I cant transfer any music over. Thats not all, I spoke to one of the "TECH" guys at nokia and he told me to format my memory card on the phone, so i did this. Now I have NO music on my phone and it still says the same damn thing!!!!! When I plug my phone to the PC it opens it like a normal memory card! Has anyone any idea what the hells goin on? Do I need a new memory card, is my phone stuffed or has my PC just decided not to work with Nokia phones anymore?
Any help would be much apreciated.

The message about the incompatible mode is from PC Suite, and you should see it when you connect in mas storage or media transfer modes. As long as you are using Nokia Music Store application and it recognises the phone (ie: the phone name is shown next to the phone icon on the left of the screen) then you shoul be able to use the Nokia Music to transfer music in media transfer mode.
If you are not using Nokia Musioc, connect in Mass Storage mode and you can copy music between the PC and phone just as you copy between different folders in the PC. However, if your music is DRM-copyright protected you can't use this method and will need to use either Nokia Music or Windows Media Player in media transfer mode.
Because you've reformatted the card, it is completely blank, so when you start up various apps in the phone they will re-establish their correct file structures so after usage the behaviour of the phone will become more 'normal' as you know it.

  • Sony camcorder - usb mode - finder stopped working

    Hello,
I used to be able to access the stills on my Sony HandyCam HC40 quite easily. I simply plugged in the USB cable and turned on the camera and went to the play/edit mode. Then the camcorder showed up as a disk drive in the finder.
Now I get a message on the camera screen saying USB Mode Unplug before changing settings. No disk drive shows up in the finder.
As far as I can tell there have been no setting changed on the camera and the only difference in the Mac is that I am now at 10.4.10 whereas I was at an earlier version (not sure which) the last time I successfully did this.
does this situation ring a bell for someone?
(Note that firewire - iMovie is still fine, but to get to my stills I need to solve this USB issue.)

Hmmm. Same problem on my wife's ibook running 10.3.
So it seems that blaming 10.4.10 may not be fair.

  • HP Veer stuck in USB Mode

I'm stuck. went to charge my veer and it got stuck in usb mode and will not come out. I also didnt set up a palm profile so can't downlod webos to fix it. Tried the palm pre webdoctor and it said my phone was fixed (after an hour or so). So iturn it back on and its tuck in usb mode with that huge usb sign. Nothing else works...no calling, transfers, not even emergency calls. How do I either get it unstuck or reset my palm profile to use webdoctor?
Post relates to: HP Veer p160una (AT&T)

You can do a hard reset of the printer (pulling the power cord out with the printer on, waiting 30 seconds and then plugging it back in)
You are still in warranty if you just purchased this 2 months ago. I suggest you call 1-800-HPINVENT.
You will need to provide your name, phone number, email address, serial and product number for this printer.

  • Nokia 206 USB Mode

My NOKIA 206 hasn't got any USB Connection. However it keeps on trying yo connect in USB mode. How can I prevent this ?
    Thank you
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

With such an error, officially, you need repair with a genuine Nokia Care Centre because either the hardware is damaged or the software needs a refurbishment.
Looking at the second-hand market price of a Nokia 206, I would not to go that path but for another phone like a Nokia 6303 classic (without i because of its better camera compared to the Nokia 6303i classic) or Nokia 301. These phone models offer a USB port officially, which eases do-it-yourself software repair via the Software Recovery Tool on a Windows computer.

  • Incompatible USB mode for PC-suite

    Hi all,
    I have a N76:
    V31.0.014
    I'm running PC suit 7.0.8.2, windows-XP Home
Whatever I'm trying, PC-suite keeps telling me "connected in a non-compatible USB mode".
Don't start suggesting to switch my mode on the phone, please.
When I connect the phone it tells me "Select mode: PC Suite, Data transfer, Image print and Media player", and I'm selecting "PC Suite".
I've tried this 100+ times, but it will still tell me I'm in file transfer mode.
I've also tried to find solutions from other users, but "switch your phone to PC suite mode" does not help. It's in PC suite, and I can give you screenshots if needed. It just doesn't work....
I'm getting a bit frustrated and started using profanities in my google searches to solve this...
Anyone here who can help me?
    Cheers,
    Jos

That's exactly the problem. The phone is in fact set to PC Suite mode. But the PC suite program still says "connected in incompatible mode".  None of the tricks I found in the forum helped so far.
OVI suite says "phone is in file transfer mode". I have the German version. So in English it might say something else.
Nothing works. It  seems the problem is with the phone?
It is really difficult not to use four letter words in describing this problem!
