EA2700 WAN Port Speed

I just bought an EA2700. The diagnostic says that the WAN port speed is 1 Gigabit. Speedtest however reveals max 85 Mbit throughput which makes me believe that is just Fast Ethernet (100 Mbit). My internet provider delivers 120 Mbit down speed and I would like to get full speed, what is wrong?

I believe that these statements are true.
Auto negotiation is good when both sides are configured to negotiate. When one side does not negotiate the other side should not try to negotiate.

  • EA2700 WAN PORT open to the world by default?

I just noticed last night that my EA2700 router was accessible on the WAN port, from the Internet, on ports 80 and 53. I am running router firmware 1.0.14 and the update utility reports that there is no newer version.
Remote management is NOT enabled (it defaults to port 8080 anyway) and I enabled and disabled it for good measure. Rebooted a few times, too.
I then enabled and disabled the regular admin interface on HTTPS and turned off HTTP. That enabled the admin interface on port 443, but still left it enabled on port 80. And now both port 80 and 443 were accessible outside the firewall! And now I couldn't turn off port 443!
I disabled UPnP and rebooted and still the ports were open to the Internet.
Needless to say, I was pretty horrified by this discovery.
I only leave one port forwarded, port 22, to SSH on an internal box. That is the only hole through my firewall I ever expect to see.
As a fix for this problem, I added three new port forwards on port 80, port 53 and port 443, and mapped them all to a random port on an unused IP on my internal network. THIS and ONLY this finally made ports 80, 53, and 443 inaccessible from the Internet at large.
What's going on here? It seems hard to believe that EVERY EA2700 device would have this issue or this would've come out long ago. Any ideas?

  • WRT350n - what is the WAN port speed?

    Hello,
Virginmedia in the UK have 50mb download capability now which I am interested in purchasing. I have been advised to check that my current router (wrt350n V2 v2.00.18 firmware) is capable of handling that speed on it's WAN port prior to signing up. It's not clear on the data sheet if the WAN port is gigabut ehternet capable, same as the 4 ethernet ports, and I wanted to ask just to be absolutely sure.
Any help or clarification gratefully received.

As the Router which you have its an Giga bit Wireless Router, and all the LAN port on the Back of the Router are the Giga bit LAN Ports. Your Router will work with 50mb speed, and you should be able to go online from all your Computers.

  • WAN port speed on RVS4000

I have an RVS4000 with the following:
    Firmware Version:
    V1.3.3.5
    CPU:
    STAR 9202
    I believe it's a v1 of the RVS4000 as I've tried to put the 2.x.x firmware and I couldn't.
My ISP upgraded me to a 100Mb/20Mb down/up plan (Quantum 100 here: https://www.highlandsfibernetwork.com/internet). However, through my RVS4000, I get the following speeds:
Download Speed 18498 kbps (2312.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed 19098 kbps (2387.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
    Latency 7 ms
    Client Time December 4, 2011 11:06 AM
Server Time December 4, 2011 11:06 AM PST
When I connect directly to the switch rather than through my RVS4000 I get:
Download Speed 45818 kbps (5727.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed 6240 kbps (780 KB/sec transfer rate)
    Latency 5 ms
    Client Time December 4, 2011 10:59 AM
Server Time December 4, 2011 10:58 AM PST
Clearly there's something wrong here, where I'm getting less than half the download speed through the RVS4000 than I do without it. From the datasheet, it states that the RVS4000's WAN port is a 10/100/1000 port, so I don't see why I should have the limitation on speed.
    Can someone help resolve this?
    Robert.

    Hello Abudef,
I disabled IPS and verified that QOS is disabled. Now with the speed test, I get a large improvement, basically bringing me up to the speed without the RVS4000 involved:
Download Speed 41811 kbps (5226.4 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed 20550 kbps (2568.8 KB/sec transfer rate)
    Latency 5 ms
    Client Time December 4, 2011 07:47 PM
Server Time December 4, 2011 07:46 PM PST
Thank you so much for your help!

  • WRT 1900AC WAN Port Speed

I'm using a Motorola SB6141 cable modem and it seems that since I upgraded the Linksys to the latest firmware,  1.1.8.164.461, my Cable Modem thinks it's connected to a 100Mb port rather than a 1Gb port.  (Cable modem link light is flashing amber, rather than blue)  Has anyone seen this or suggest what to do to resolve?  I was looking for a way to configure the WAN port but don't see any option to do so. I've also factory reset my modem, router, and reloaded the latest firmware, as well as swapped cables, with no change.

Solved it myself by doing a hardware reset and reloading the firmware.

  • Setting WAN Port Speed on RV180

We have an RV180 and can not get connected to a port on CPE equipment after setting the WAN port on the RV180 to 100/Full.
The CPE equip port is set to 100 Mb/Full Duplex.  When the port on the RV180 WAN is set to AUTO and we connect to the CPE we see a lot of CRC errors and very poor performance.  When we set the RV180 WAN Port to 100/Full we see no traffic at all.
We have a Cisco ASA 5150 router connecting to the a different port on the same CPE and when we set its port to 100/Full we see very good performance.
We have upgraded the RV180 to the latest FW (1.0.3.10) but that didn't solve the problem.
Can anyone provide assistance with setting the WAN port to 100/Full with success?
    Thank you,
    John

Hi John, incrementing CRC errors traditionally indicate a physical problem. I've not known it to indicate anything different.

  • RVS4000 WAN PORT set to 1000Mbit

Is there a way to set the WAN Port to 1000Mbit? My Cablemodem supports up to 1000Mbit on the interface but the RVS4000 only runs at 100Mbit WAN Port speed.
It would be great to have the same options as for the LAN ports to change sensing also on the WAN port.
    Thanks.

    Hi Gonzalo,
The RVS4000 router can only allow one WAN IP address at a time. The RV series routers (RV042, RV082, and RV016) can allow multiple WAN IP addresses for load balancing or failovers.

  • EA6500 manually select speed and duplex for WAN port

Is there any way (hidden settings?) to manually select speed or duplex for WAN port on EA6500? I'm using EA6500 with Genexis HRG1044 (FTTH) and the latter has known issues with upload speed when local device is connected on gigabit. It seems that both EA6500 and Genexis HRG1044 only support autonegotiation and that always results in gigabit which results in poor upload speeds over the internet. Placing 100 Mbps switch between EA6500 and Genexis HRG1044 does the trick but I was wondering if it can be done without it. BTW, my internet speed is only 100/100 Mbps anyways.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

@discoHR If you don't mind me asking, for what purpose do you want to adjust the speed on the WAN port of the EA6500? Is it to increase the upload speed? I'm just spitballing, but I don't think there's any "hidden setting" to adjust it on the EA6500.

  • Speed limitation on Time Capsule Ethernet WAN port

I have a Time Capsule 2TB model A1409 that is connected to a Motorola Cable Modem SBV5121 and only connects to it ("green light") when the Ethernet WAN port is set to 10 Mbps/Half Duplex (fastest speed - average 5 Mbps for download) or 10 Mbps/Full Duplex (slowest speed - average 3 Mbps for download). No other mode can get a connection "green light". Time capsule software is 7.6.1.
Today I connected a Cisco Linksys E2500 router to the same cable modem and download speed increased to 10 Mbps which is what I am paying for my ISP. I haven't even touched the ethernet WAN port configuration. Straight forward.
I would be grateful if someone could point out a configuration change that would allow my TC to connect as fast as this Cisco router.

    fcamineiro wrote:
It works fine in Bridge Mode with a Thomson Integrated Modem/Router. But I don't want to use this configuration since I won't be able to use the TC's Guest Network.
Just tried connecting with Cisco's ethernet cable but remained the same.
Is it possible to bridge the Thomson??
Stick a small cheapo switch between the TC and Morotola and see if that fixes it.. as I said, not all chips quite talk to each other.. even in this day and age.
And Motorola cable modems seem to have more problems than most .. this is not new to me.

  • Port speed and Wan speed

While reading Cisco documentation, router have a specific WAN speed up to 21 Mbps etc or more depending on router. You also see port speeds of 100Mbps or 1Gbps, but why are Wan speeds limited to far less on most Cisco routers.

If a router can support, for example, 21 Mbps, you don't want to have an interface of only 10 Mbps and you'll find router with 100 Mbps interface.
Same goes with routers that can support, for example, 125 Mbps.  The routers will come with 1 Gbps interface instead of 100 Mbps interface.

  • WAN port limited to 10mbps on PPPoE

    Hello,
I'm having trouble with the WAN port on my Airport Extreme. I got FTTC (fibre) coming into a VDSL2+ modem. When I connect my Mac directly to that I get roughly 70mbps download speed. But when using the Airport Extreme my connection caps at 10mbps! I have the 3rd generation, so all ports should be gigabit ethernet ports.
I saw some other posts here suggesting to set the WAN port settings in Airport Utility. I can't find those in the latest utility, so downloaded Airport Utility 5.6, changed from PPPoE to Ethernet, set the WAN speed to 1000 duplex and set it back to PPPoE. Now it refused to connect at all and claimed the cable was unplugged. Not until I went in and set Ethernet to "automatic" did it connect again via PPPoE. So it seems that my Airport Extreme refuses to use a faster ethernet connection than 10mbps when using PPPoE.
Any solution to this? There clearly is something wrong here! I contacted my ISP and they said that they have reports from other users of the Airport Extreme with the same problem.

You didn't mention this, but it could be as simple your cable from the modem to the router. If you are using a Cat5 Ethernet cable, you need to be using a Cat5e or Cat6 cable. I use Cat6 cables on my network because they are certified to run at Gigabit speeds. Cat5e is not certified but can work on a Gigabit network.
Also, when you direct connect your Mac to the AEBS you should be getting download speeds well over 100 Mbps, depending upon your system provider and what speed you're paying for. This leads me to believe it's the cable.

  • Can someone explain to me "Recommended WAN Access Speed (with services)?

    Looking at this spec sheet:
    http://www.cisco.com/c/dam/en/us/products/collateral/routers/3900-series-integrated-services-routers-isr/Routing_Poster.pdf
Why offer GE WAN ports on a 1921 if the recommended WAN access speed is only 15Mbps?  Can someone provide context?  I think I'm misunderstanding the specs.
    Thanks!

  • Performance of WAN Port

    Hi there,
I ordered a 120 Mbit/s line from my provider. After some speed issues I had a online session with the service provider today. I was getting 80-90 Mbit/s ....
He advised me to take out the AirPort Extreme between the Cable Modem and my Mac Mini. First of all I did not think this will bring any improvement since the Modem is GBit Ethernet and the Mac Mini and Airport Extreme too....
As he insisted on that I took it out and what happened? Internet performance went up from 80-90 to 110-115 Mbits.
So actually there is a real cut in performance - is this a general performance limitation, like firewall/nat or whatever is making airport busy and not letting trough more than 100 Mbit .... or is the WAN port only 100Mbit?
    Is there anything to tune?
Oh by the way the extreme is 2 weeks old - so it is latest model (MC)
    Thanks in advance!

I've owned several routers from different manufacturers and have worked with several Internet service providers and have found that the routing process will cause, on average, a 15-20% drop in speed when compared to a straight through connection from the modem to a computer. Sometimes, its a bit more loss and sometimes a bit less.
There is no doubt that the the NAT firewall accounts for some of this loss in the routing process and the process of sharing a single connection from the modem is likely to cause some loss as well.
If had a 100 Mpbs service from the provider, I would expect on average to see speeds in the 80-85 Mbps range using an ethernet connection through the router. The Internet connection speed often varies on most providers during the day depending on the number of users on the system.
If you are talking about wireless speed, there is more speed loss here through the router due to the security encryption process.
Now, the results of other users may vary. Hopefully, they will post to give us more perspective. Based on the different routers I've used with different providers, I would say that your results are in the range that I would expect.

  • WAN port configuration SA520w

We switched to another internet provider and have problem with our SA520w and a slow WAN connection on av fibre connection.
We have confirmed that we need to set/ force the WAN port interface on the router to use 10base-t (Full duplex) in order to get maxium speed from our Internet provider. Is there any solution force the router to use that settings as I cant find that alternative on the port setting page in router configuration?
    Latest firmware installed
    Thanks

    Hi,
You can change speed and duplex settings at Networking->Port Management -> Port Management.
