EA4500 - bridge mode solved all my problems

For what it's worth, putting the EA4500 in bridge mode and using none of its capabilities solved all my access and stability problems.
My setup:
EA4500
Firmware Ver.2.1.39.145204
Bridge mode
Network topology:
comcast supplied cablemodem --- Cisco 871 -- Linksys EA4500
After nickel and diming my home networking for years, I found it's better to just spend the money and be done with it.
I went to this setup shortly before Cisco jettisoned Linksys (maybe Linksys would have been better off never having been bought in the first place, I don't know and that's a different discussion) in 2013 and I've had zero problems and 100% stability ever since.
The Cisco 871 can run for as low as under $100 and you are getting and enterprise-class router that runs Cisco IOS. It's well known, well understood and universally supported. If you ever wanted to learn about networking and Cisco IOS, this is probably one of the cheapest ways to do it. Downside is that the 871 only support 802.11b/g so I use the EA4500 with dual 2 & 5Ghz to support both my 802.11n 5Ghz laptops and newer smartphones and tablets and 2Ghz for the older stuff. Works great.

Thanks for sharing. Will try that in the future.

  • 10.5.1 solved all the problems

    I had several problems reported:
    -no sleep
-Radeon X1900 zapped by Mathematica software and crashing the computer
which have been all solved by the OS 10.5.1 update.
I can now really start to work with, rather than experiment with, OS 10.5 - which is now in better overall shape for me than the 10.4 (I still keep a disk with that one on it - one never knows...)

And no-ones mentioned the best outcome of 10.5.3...
...a radical decrease in the number of whiny Logic complainers posts about how much Logic ***** and how much DAW XX is so much better and...
    Thank goodness for that!
Of course, this is the place to post issues, but whines and moans when not constructed properly just drag the place down and make it not a particularly fun place to hang out, especially for the people that come here more to help out than to post their own questions. Personally, I was just about reaching the end of my patience limit (if I saw another "Logic rant" post I was gonna rip out my internet connection
So three cheers for Apple, eh?
And nice to see some positive words from Rob - glad it's working out for you. We just need to convert Steve back from Mother Alsihad now...

  • Mountain Lion problems with Mail Signatures, Pages, Numbers, Keynote - This quick fix solved all my problems with these. Pages etc wouldn't launch and needed to be force quitted. Mail signature changes wouldn't save.

The solution was simple in my case. I don't know why it worked and it may have been entirely coincidental but its worth a try.
Close all applications and restart Mountain Lion.
Log in as Guest. I opened Pages at this point but I don't know if that's required.
Log out and then back in as your normal user.
Pages, Numbers and Keynote now were fine for me and Mail signature changes were saved and available for later use.
For those trying to edit the signatures to get their old ones back - I just found an old sent mail and copied the signature there into the newly created one via the normal preferences. No need for opening .mailsignature files and editing them. This included various colours, sizes, an image and a link with no problems.
I hope this helps anyone having some of these problems.

IiPad 2 has slowed down with ios8 copy paste is not working it hangs when you try to fill up forms ,Apple engineers you need to do something fast

Apple engineers do not participate here. Have you updated to iOS 8.1 which was just release yesterday? Have you done any other troubleshooting? If you haven't start here.
Go to Settings>Safari>Clear History and Website Data
Now close all apps. In order to close apps, you have to drag the app up from the multitasking display. Double tap the home button and you will see apps lined up going left to right across the screen. Swipe to get to the app that you want to close and then swipe "up" on the app preview thumbnail to close it.
Next, reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.
If those three things made no difference, try this. Reset all settings. You will not lose any data, but most of the device settings will have to be entered in the settings app again. Settings>General>Reset>Reset all Settings.
If all of that fails, restore the iOS software. Backup your iPad before you restore, then restore the backup when you are done. If that still doesn't help, restore your iPad as new and start all over again. Most purchased content can be downloaded again at no charge as long as you use the same Apple ID and as long as the content is still available in the store.

Having posted more than a few nasty things about iWeb 08 on these forums, I now return humbled because the recent software update appears to have fixed all my issues. My 06 site is updated and working like a champ. I'm particularly happy with the new html and personal domain features. Also the site is publishing and loading MUCH quicker. Thank you Apple!

  • Why do people think repair permissions should solve all their 'problems' ?

This seems to be a recurring theme with many people? I'm just curious. Please, fill me in.
Message was edited by: Jesse Fleming

Disc permissions need to be fixed for several reasons --
For those coming from the Windows world, it is the equivalent of fixing your drivers and registry files.
But on a Mac, people rarely shut their systems down, just put them to sleep. Especially on laptops, I personally don't know anyone that shuts their system down -- often for months at a time.
But people do add and remove programs, drag things off their dock, move applications from one folder to another, etc. All those things leave "residuals" behind that can mess up read/write/execute files.
Repairing permissions from time to time clears some of those things out.
It is NOT, however, the be-all-and-fix-all under Tiger and Leopard. Although often it DOES fix those random weird errors.

  • Bridge Mode Problems?

Connected my new AEBS gigabit model one week ago to our existing home network with the AEBS in bridge mode. All worked fine for 7-days but we lost internet connection yesterday. The Belkin router needed to be reset and Belkin support says its because the AEBS is set up in bridge mode.
Setup is: DSL modem (providing PPoE to ISP) connected to Belkin 4-port wired ethernet router WAN port and AEBS WAN port connected to "regular" port on the Belkin router. DSL modem and wired router are downstairs (in home office) and the AEBS is upstairs (for full house wireless coverage).
I need to maintain the current physical locations of the hardware. Do I need to change the setting of the AEBS from bridge mode? What other setting(s) would work?
    Thanks

Hello MacsNMore. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
This looks like a good setup. I assume that your Belkin router is providing NAT & DHCP services...correct?
I need to maintain the current physical locations of the hardware. Do I need to change the setting of the AEBS from bridge mode? What other setting(s) would work?
Having the AEBSn in bridge mode would be the most appropriate configuration for your network setup.
    Let's double-check your AEBSn's settings...
Temporarily connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to one of the LAN ports of the AEBSn, and then, using the AirPort Utility in Manual Mode, check these settings:
    Internet - Internet Connection
    o Connect Using: Ethernet
    o Configure IPv4: Using DHCP
    o IP Address: <provided by your ISP>
    o Subnet Mask: <provided by your ISP>
    o Router Address: <provided by your ISP>
    o DNS Server(s): <provided by your ISP>
    o Domain Name: <provided by your ISP>
    o DHCP Client ID: (optional)
o Ethernet WAN Port: Automatic (Default)
o Connection Sharing: Off (Bridge Mode)

  • How To Access Files Remotely In Bridge Mode?

Hey guys, so I've got a TC and my roomate has a TC the only way we can get them both to work is hooked up to our router and placing both TC's to Bridge Mode. The issue is in Bridge Mode we've lost a lot of remote functionality. The main thing we both want to do is access our files when we're on the go. Is there a way to remotely access our TCs in bridge mode? I'm pretty techy so I'm open to any creative solutions.

but how will this solve the problem where I don't see "Share disks over WAN" on my TC?
The TC does not need that option....since it is already in Bridge Mode.
If the TC were also your router.....then it would be providing DHCP and NAT service....and the option to "Share..." would be needed....so it would appear so you could allow or open the WAN port. The example that Tesserax provides assumes that the TC is also the router......providing DHCP and NAT service.
You have a different layout. Another device is providing the DHCP and NAT routing, and the TC  is in Bridge Mode.
Are you saying that option will become available when my TC sees the approptiate port is open?
You don't need the "option" at all in Bridge Mode.  All ports are already open when the TC is in Bridge Mode. There is no WAN port in Bridge Mode....it automatically becomes a LAN port, so no need to "open" a port if it is already "open".

  • Getting the most out of AE in bridging mode?

My broadband internet is connected to my Netgear wired router. The router is in turn connected to my AirPort Extreme via Ethernet cable. The AE is set up in bridging mode. All IP assignments are done through the Netgear router. Everything works fine on my mixed wired/wireless LAN. But I've run out of LAN ports on the Netgear. All of my LAN ports are available on the AE. Can I use these to access the network? Do I need to reconfigure my AE in some fashion? It is set up to participate in a WDS network as the WDS main. When I connect a device to the AE LAN port it doesn't seem to be recognized on the network.
    Thanks.
    John

I posted too soon! Problem solved. Everything works fine now with a new Ethernet cable. The LAN ports on the AE work fine for hard wired connection to the LAN.
    Thanks.

  • Westell 6100G in bridge mode with Linksys BFSR41 wired router

I have had a long go-round with V tech support over slow DSL speeds since March 2011. They sent me the Westell 6100G to replace an ancient Westell that had provided satisfactory service for many years, connected through my LInksys BFSR41.
Initially, I connected the Westell directly to a PC and did not see any improvement in speed (always around 1.3M since March). So I re-connected it in bridge mode with the LInksys. Slow speeds continued, plus periodic hiccups, where the connection would simply not exist, although the lights were all good and the LInksys said "connected. Cure was to wait or power down modem and router. The following week a V tech called and said they had made changes to the network and fixed a problem with my line.
Thereafter I did  see a vast improvement in speed as tested by Speedtest.net and Speakeasy.com (usually 2.8 M or thereabouts). But I still had the "hiccups". Now you see it, now you don't.
V tech support said, "connect the Westell directly". This indeed solved all intermittance problems. But I need the router  and I need it to do the DHCP addressing dynamically as I frequently swap out machines. FYI this is a PPOe connection.
I hope someone on the forum can help me before I spend anther 2 hours in voicemail limbo.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Well, my heat/humidity solution helped, but has not solved my problem. My connection still disappears at unpredictable, though less frequent intervals.  Any and all ideas willl be appreciated.
    Thanks

  • Why is bridge mode necessary?

I spent the last several hours unsuccessfully trying to set up a 2wire gateway to work as a bridge with my Time Capsule. From reading other posts it appears things work better the other way around, with the Time Capsule as the bridge. Before I start over again, all of this has got me wondering, why exactly is it necessary to set one of them into bridge mode? All I know is I'm supposed to, but I'm not sure why. As it stands, I don't have either one in bridge mode, and everything seems to be working fine. Will this create other problems I can't see?

From rereading your original post, it appears that the 2wire was originally set up as the main router in your system and as such, it was also supplying the PPPoE service, is that correct?
I'm not that familiar with the 2wire products, but I assume that your device has a built in modem. Do you know if this is the case?
Was the 2wire set up to create a wireless network?
Then you tried to set up the 2wire in bridge mode, but this was not successful. So I now understand that the 2wire has been returned to its original non-bridge configuration. If the Time Capsule is powered down for now, can you connect an ethernet cable from your MacBook to the 2wire as a test and get a good internet connection?
If you are able to connect using ethernet, and the 2wire was originally set up to also create a wireless network (I assume this was the case) are you able to get a good internet connection using the wireless network?
We need to make sure that the 2wire is back in its original configuration before attempting to connect the Time Capsule. Can you please review the questions above and post your reply when you can?
If your 2wire is functioning the way it was originally, all you need to do is establish an ethernet connection between one of the LAN <-> ports on the 2wire to the WAN (circle icon) port on the Time Capsule.
In AirPort Utility, the Time Capsule would connect via ethernet, not PPPoE (the 2wire is already doing this).
Connection Sharing on the Time Capsule would be set to Off (Bridge Mode)
The Time Capsule will still be creating its own wireless network if you set it up to do so. As such, you will be able to backup using either ethernet or wireless.
In this configuration, you will be able to use the wireless of either the 2wire and the Time Capsule to access the internet. Backups will occur only on the wireless network created by the Time Capsule.

  • Bridge mode CSM - Serverfarm with hosts in different vlans

    Hi,
I'm trying to answer a question while doing design. I am planning on deploying a CSM in bridge mode with multiple vlans. I need to create a serverfarm which has real servers in two separate server side vlans.
I would then present the Vserver on the client side only of one of the vlans (I always like to specify where I want the vserver). Whe traffic comes in to this vserver, will the CSM appropriately switch traffic to both vservers? I think it will but don't have access to a csm right now to mock it up.
    Thanks
    Adam

You cannot have 3 vlans configured in bridge mode with all vlans using same address space.
You can use mixed mode to achieve your goal.
It is possible to have Vlan 10 and Vlan 11 in bridge mode and at the same time have VLAN 12 (for example) in the routed mode.
    - Traffic from vlan 10 to vlan 20 is bridged
    - Traffic from vlan 10 to vlan 12 is routed
where Vlan 10&20 belong to same subnet and Vlan 12 is in different subnet.

  • Bridge Mode and Wired Computer

    Hello,
I'm new to the networking thing but... I have a modem/wireless router suppling the internet the computer in the house, but I want to be able to access my hard drive from my extreme router. So I hooked the first modem/router to the extreme and set it to bridge mode. All worked great until I wanted to hook up another computer to the extreme with a wired cable. It was on the extreme network but couldn't get any internet.
Is it possible to do this or am I going to have to come up with another solution?
    Thanks
    -Jeff

Jeff, Welcome to the discussion area!
Assuming the DHCP server on the "modem/wireless router" is enabled, what you describe should work. Have you checked this setting on that device?

  • A question about bridge mode

I have a DSL modem which is set to distribute IP addresses. Wireless network is off.
A Time Capsule (connected to DSL modem by Ethernet) which is in bridge mode and creates the wireless network.
Question: should I be able to connect to Internet through a Ethernet connection at the Time Capsule?
    thanks
    Ken

I would first verify that the Time Capsule is setup as a bridge as follows:
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
    Click Manual Setup
    Click the Internet icon
    Connect Using = Ethernet
Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)
If all appears to be well, try connecting the ethernet cable from your gateway to one of the other ports on the Time Capsule. In other words, if you have it connected to the WAN port (circle icon) now, connect to one of the other three LAN <-> ports.
Truth be known, when the Time Capsule is setup in bridge mode, all the ports behave the same. It does not matter which you use. If the WAN port has taken a hit from a nearby lightning strike or a power surge, the other 3 ports may still be operational.
    Any luck?
