EA4500 -- Connection between 2 PC's fails

This issue has gone on for quite a while now....  As an IT person this is baffling to me:
Very simple home network --  192.168.6.X/24  addresses handed out by a Linksys EA4500.  About 16 wireless and 1 wired device total on network.
Two laptops - One with Windows 7 (IP= 192.168.6.32) , other with Windows 8.1( IP= 192.168.6.12) both wi-fi
Every day the win 7 laptop is left on all day, the win 8.1 laptop is sleeping.  They are in different rooms.  When I start up the win 8.1 laptop and try to access anything on the win 7 laptop (rdp, file shares, etc..) it can't connect.
A ping from .12 to .32 returns Destination Host Unreachable -- So it seems like a failed ARP request.
A ping from .32 to .12 returns a Time Out -- Mac address is found in the ARP table.
During this time both machines can connect to any other device on the network (NAS, wifi printer, etc..) and they can both get out to the internet.  All other devices can connect to them.  The built in ping from the EA4500 troubleshooting will succeed to both devices with no packet loss..
Once I give in and restart either the router or the win 7 laptop they can connect just fine.  I just can't figure out why it is just these two devices that stop communicating.
So I'm truly at a loss here -- I will be asking the same question on Microsoft forums, but 10 bucks says they come back to me and say it's a network issue...
Thanks!!

Have you tried checking on the firewall? Disable the computer's firewall temporarily and see if it works. You may also want to check on some antivirus that may contain firewall and temporarily disable the firewall.

• Connection between two Macs fails

My home-network consists of a MacPro (1,1 - 2006), a MacBook Pro (Early 2008) an a MacMini (late 2009), all running OS X 10.6.3, no software-firewall is running. My router is a LinkSys WRT 610 N which I use with ethernet (Mac Pro) and wireless (Book an Mini). Wireless is both, 2,4- and 5,0 Ghz (802.11n).
When I try to connect from the MacPro to the MacBook Pro via wireless, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. The reverse connection works (Book to Pro). Sharing is enabled on every Mac, also screen sharing. If I connect the MacBook Pro via ethernetcable, it works. What could this be? Also I often cannot connect via the symbol in the sidebar of the finder, I have to use the "go to" - menu. If I want to make screen sharing I have to use "go to > vnc ...". Does anybody know these issues and can give me a hint? By the way, the connection between the two "younger" Macs (mini and book) works fine ...

_*wireless interference*_ ?
download iStumbler (free) and note the channels other networks in your vicinity are broadcasting on. change the channel(s) of your network as far away as possible from those.
any improvement ?

Hi shldr2thewheel,
it has been a while since we have last spoke, I would like to let you know, I am still working on getting used to the switch from windows to a Mac/Apple system. I do have a new question for you, I did purchase In Design CS5.5 through journeyed.com through Cuyahoga Community College of which I attend as a student, is there a way to purchase an online book through iTunes to learn that as well? Also, you know me, the struggling student, I would also, when and if the book can be purchased through the iTunes, would need to know if you do know of a much easier book for struggling students like myself and at a reasonable price as well for the In Design CS5.5 program. Our campus bookstore had closed early, and, so did the colleges library and our local library here where I do live, so, I cannot go to either place to purchase a book or to take out a book, plus cash funds are low at this moment as well but, I do have money left on the iTunes account to use, if it can be used. So, can it be used, the iTunes money, towards finding a low priced online book? I am in great need of assistance as I have a project due for my one course for this Tuesday, September 4, 2012.
Sincerely in need of help once again,

• Java.sql.SQLException: The TCP/IP connection to the host  has failed.

Hello. I hope you had a happy new year! Now its back to work.
I am having a problem connecting to a remote SQL Server DB. I am using NetBeans 5.5 and the latest J2EE. I am able to see the tables in the IDE and bind objects to data. But when I run it it gets this:
java.sql.SQLException: Error in allocating a connection. Cause: Connection could not be allocated because: The TCP/IP connection to the host has failed. java.net.ConnectException: Connection refused: no further information
at com.sun.gjc.spi.DataSource.getConnection(DataSource.java:100)

at com.sun.sql.rowset.CachedRowSetXImpl.execute(CachedRowSetXImpl.java:1428)
I checked the SQL Server Configuration manager on that machine and TCP/IP connections are allowed. What else could be wrong?
Thank You.

"Connection refused" means that the client sends a packet saying "I would like to connect to port number NNNN please" to the server computer, and the server computer's OS sends the reply "there is no process listening to that port on the network interface you are using".
The database server is not running, or running but not listening to TCP/IP connections, or at a different port from what you think, or listening to only selected network interfaces (it is possible for a process to listen to a specific interface or a wildcard for all interfaces). A less likely scenario is that a firewall is sending the "connection refused" message.
First aid check list for "connection refused":
- Check host name in connect string.
- Check port number in connect string.
- Try numeric IP address of server host in connect string, in case name server is hosed.
- Are there any firewalls between client and server blocking the port.
- Check that the db server is running.
- Check that the db server is listening to the port. On the server, try: "telnet localhost the-port-number". Or "netstat -an", there should be a listening entry for the port. You need to configure the database to accept TCP connections; the server documentation or google should explain how.
- Try "telnet server-host-name the-port-number" from the client, to see if firewalls are blocking it.
- If "telnet" fails: try telnet with the numeric ip address.
- If "telnet" fails: does it fail immediately or after an obvious timeout? How long is the timeout?
- Does the server respond to "ping serverhost" or "telnet serverhost" or "ssh serverhost"?

• Connection to server failed (Error NT_STATUS_IO_TIMEOUT)

Hi there,
I'm a long time linux user (casual) and have recently got hold of a machine that I am using as a server. I am able to SSH into this fine from my laptop and I am doing all the setup from ssh.

I have no windows machines so it's only my laptop and desktop both running linux that I need to connect to this. I have tried googling and searching these forums to no avail
Thanks for any help that can be offered
Mike

If I run the following (on the machine I'm trying to set up the share)
smbclient -L localhost -U%
I got the following output
Connection to localhost failed (Error NT_STATUS_CONNECTION_REFUSED)
so I thought it might be something incorrect with the iptables side of things, however I haven't really touched that at all and it seems to look correct
iptables -nvL
Chain INPUT (policy ACCEPT 667 packets, 79977 bytes)
pkts bytes target prot opt in out source destination
Chain FORWARD (policy ACCEPT 0 packets, 0 bytes)
pkts bytes target prot opt in out source destination
Chain OUTPUT (policy ACCEPT 157 packets, 20724 bytes)
pkts bytes target prot opt in out source destination
So from my (very little) knowledge this appears correct (I think)... However it appears that something is blocking access somewhere.

to configure acceptance of the ABAP (integrated ITS / WebGUI) saplogonticket on the java stack, just log into the java stack (http://FQDN:50xxx/nwa) and select configuration  THe last item in the list is Trusted System... click.
on the ensuing page, click on the add trusted system button --> by querying trusted sytem.
Enter the required data on the page:
system type: ABAP
host name: FQDN
System Nr: your instance number
client (of the productive client)
and a username and pw with superuser priveliges in the system (SAP_ALL/SAP_NEW, etc).
the click next
On the final screen, click finish.
You have now SSO setup between the ABAP and Java stacks. To configure SSO to accept java saplogontickets on ABAP see:

after finish installing an update, the the status light keeps blinking and a picture of the connection between the micro USB and iTunes shows up - what is this about?

The update failed - using a USB to microUSB lead (that Apple annoyingly don't include!), try to restore the AppleTV software to current version software using instructions here:

Pay attention to differences in power connection depending on whether or not you have AppleTV2 or AppleTV 3.

• Connectivity between blades in Cisco UCS environment

We're trying to setup a UCS environment for testing purposes, and seem to be unable to establish any connectivity between servers within the UCS. At the moment, the environment has no upstream LAN connectivity and therefore no uplinks defined on the fabric interconnects. We had wanted to run the test within the UCS keeping it isolated, and connect in via the management interface to UCS Manager. I suppose my question is, is it possible to get the blades to talk to each other without uplinks defined and connection to an external network?
Many Thanks - Lee

Further to what has been mentioned, you can stay in end-host mode but change the behaviour for no uplinks, which is the Network Control Policy.
Not sure where it is on the GUI (it may be CLI only) but its described at http://ciscosystems.com/en/US/docs/unified_computing/ucs/sw/cli/config/guide/1.0.2/CLI_Config_Guide_1.0.2_chapter15.html
The config item is
set uplink-fail-action {link-down| warning}
The description is
Specifies the action to be taken when no uplink port is available in end-host mode.
Use the link-down keyword to change the operational state of a vNIC to down when uplink connectivity is lost on the fabric interconnect, and facilitate fabric failover for vNICs. Use the warning keyword to maintain server-to-server connectivity even when no uplink port is available, and disable fabric failover when uplink connectivity is lost on the fabric interconnect. The default uplink failure action is link-down.
When you have no uplinks all the NICs look down! This is by design. Remember you have a fabric A and a fabric B. When you have a fabric that gets isolated do you want it to fail the Ethernet links so that the blades know about it and the network failover software in your OS can send the data over the working fabric. Or do you want your blade to not know and keep sending data out, but if its destined for outside the environment its not going to get there.
Hopefully that adds some more clarity to your situation.

I'm using the JReport software, a product which generates java reports based on a jdbc datasource.
during installation the JReport installation program located Microsoft java VM installed on my PC and I accepted this option to be working JVM for JReport.
This worked very well. I have installed jdbc driver for Oracle 8.1.5 that worked fine as well on the design time (I have connected to Oracle, I have seen my tables and other information on my DB).
But when I switched the run-time view (when real data is going to load) then the following exception message appeared :
"Fail to Convert between UTF8 and UCS2: fail UTF Conversion" .
if there is anybody who understood my problem any kind of help will be appreceated
It will be helpfull to receive any suggestions made to this matter.
Anything relative help will be welcome.
thanks in advance.

I had the same problem using Oracle 9i. The problem lied within the Oracle JDBC driver itself! --;
If you're using JDBC driver from Oracle 9i, stop using it!
You should download JDBC driver of Oracle 10g from Oracle site and use that driver instead.
After I changed the driver, I now have no problem of getting Korean characters from the database.
Hope this would solve your problem too.

• VPN connection between ASA5520 and RV215w

Hello everyone,
I am trying to setup a vpn connection between ASA5520 with 9.1.(3) and rv215w 1.1.0.6
Here is my setup ...
But the vpn connection fails with an error message on ASA.
RV215w shows ipsec established but i cannot ping the network behind.
You can find asa-config and show-tech as attachment. I have added also some screenshots from RV215w.
Any hint or help is appreciated.

Hi Cengiz,
Dynamic CRYPTO maps mostly used in a Remote Access or Client to site VPN because end users working from home can have IP address new every time or like different whcn connect from home or from Internet cafe , hence ASA cant make a fix IP as Peer.
But for site to site also Dynamic Crypto Map can be used but only at one side , else if you use Dynamic crypto map at both ends , both peer will wait for each other to initiate a tunnel Request as the device n this case ASA) configured with Dynamic Crypto map can only REPLY for a tunnel initiation , it can never send tunned initilaization request as it never know the IP address of the peer. Hence never make both device as dynamic crypto map or else they both never initiate and wait for each pther and tunnel will never happen.
The main steps to be configured on the ASA end in order to establish dynamic tunnel:
        Phase 1 ISAKMP related configuration
        Nat exemption configuration
        Dynamic crypto map configuration
The Cisco IOS router has a static crypto map configured because the ASA is assumed to have a static public IP address. Now this is the list of main steps to be configured on the Cisco IOS Router end to establish dynamic IPSEC tunnel.
        Phase 1 ISAKMP related configuration
        Static crypto map related configuration
!---1. Configure the IPsec transform-set
crypto ipsec transform-set myset esp-des esp-md5-hmac
!--- 2. Configure the dynamic crypto map. Always rememeber to bind a dynamic crypto map to a blank static crypto map and then call that static crypto map to a ASA OUTSIDE Interface as Dynamic Crypto maps cannot be bind directly to ASA OUTSIDE Interface or say any interface.
crypto dynamic-map MY_DYNAMIC_MAP 1 set transform-set myset
crypto dynamic-map MY_DYNAMIC_MAP 1 set reverse-route
!--- Enable Reverse Route Injection (RRI), which allows the ASA
!--- to learn routing information for connected clients hence the static route will come above defaut route and hence
!... will make the routing decision fast else every time for the other side router dynamic IP , default route have to get a hit but only after checking the entire routing table and when no match then use default route , so to save this entire route matchin process always good to use reverse route enjection so that other side non dynamic crypt peer can insert a static route enrty in ASA.
!--- 2A. Always Bind dynamic crypto map named MY_DYNAMIC_MAP to a static crypto map named STATIC_MAP_CALLING_DYMANIC_MAP using a keyword dynamic in the last
crypto map STATIC_MAP_CALLING_DYMANIC_MAP 10 IPSec-isakmp dynamic MY_DYNAMIC_MAP
!--- 2B.now apply static map on ASA OUTSIDE Interface
crypto map STATIC_MAP_CALLING_DYMANIC_MAP interface outside
!--- 3. Configure the phase I ISAKMP policy
crypto isakmp policy 10
authentication pre-share
encryption des
hash md5
group 2
lifetime 86400

I lost the connection between my MacBook Air and Bluetooth wireless speakers (Logitech) when updating to OS 10.7.4. Tried all the "fixes" I could find, no results! Can you help?

Error message as above and below:
'Send Message Error
The message could not be sent because connecting to SMTP server mail.btinternet.com failed.
The server may be unavailable or is refusing SMTP connections.' (etc.)
BT won't deal with this - they redirect me to a 'partner' who want to charge to discuss the problem. Nice, eh!

• EA4500 - Connection Speed

Got the EA4500 & very excited, but the connection speed drops significantly when 2 machines are on web in same room. Tips?

There are four (4) reasons why the wireless connection between your Linksys router and your devices such as computers, laptops is intermittent or is experiencing a dropping speed.  These are:
• MTU Size
• Frequency interference from other wireless devices
• Low signal quality received from your wireless router
• Router’s firmware needs an upgrade
Frequent wireless speed can be resolved by doing the following:
i.   Adjusting the Maximum Transmission Unit (MTU) size
ii. Reducing Wireless Interference
iii. Customizing the Wireless Settings of the Router
iv. Updating the Firmware of the Router
Here is the link for resolving dropping wireless speed: http://www6.nohold.net/Cisco2/ukp.aspx?vw=1&docid=172c1dae41534ddd818c560b60c7c230_4029.xml&pid=80&r...

• "A connection to the server has failed" occurs in 3 minitues

I have deployed a web application(ADF) that inserts batch of records(over 50k) to the DB and client is expected to wait for the response.
But after client invoke the insert browser produce "A connection to the server has failed" java script error exactly after 3 minutes.
So the connection between client and Web Logic 10.3 is failing. Insert to DB continues to work.
Is this due to a timeout, why this error comes? How to configure web logic to avoid this.
-Prasad

PR,
You've been given some advice on the ADF forum in terms of how to deal with this (e.g., make the process asynchronous and use an af:poll/af:progressBar to keep the user informed).
Expecting a single HTTP request to work without timing out when you insert 50,000 rows one-by-one into the database is unrealistic.
