EA4500 Guest Network not working

A few days ago I saw there was an upgrade for my router.  I clicked on it and away I went. Since updating my guest network isn't working.  My android and Kindle HD find the guest network, attach but no prompt for password ever shows up like it did before.  The web page will time out and die. Does anyone have a clue why my devices don't prompt for a password anymore?

  • E4200 Guest Network Not Working

I cannot get the Guest Network feature to work.
Even though Guest SSID is enabled, it does not show up on any devices attempting to connect. Manually connecting by entering the Guest SSID fails (not recognized). On devices with the primary 5 and 2.4 GHz configured they do see the third network but without SSID (unknown) and are also unable to connect to it manually using the SSID.
    Here are my settings:
    Firmware: 1.0.02
E4200 is configured in Bridge mode (WAP).
    5 GHz Network
    Mode Mixed
    SSID Astro2-an
    Width Auto
    Channel Auto (DFS)
    SSID Broadcast Disabled
    2.4 GHz Network
    Mode Mixed
    SSID Astro2-bgn
    Width Auto
    Channel Auto
    SSID Broadcast Disabled
    Guest Access
    Allow yes
    Name Astro2-bgn-guest (cannot be changed)
    Guest Password testpassword
    Total Guests Allowed 5
    SSID Broadcast enabled
I did not try this before 1.0.02. Have rebooted modem and verified all configs (multiple times). The network is live in an office and can't keep screwing with it or drastically changing its settings.

I have now tried 3 of these routers and the problem as I see it is when you set the E4200 to bridege mode with a static IP then the client receives a .33.x address receive the E4200's default gateway and a .33.1 as the dns servers. I don't see how the clients could resolve dns with these 2 entries.
Alas, I have think I have now figured out why some people can connect using the E4200 in bridge mode as a guest and some cannot. It is my belief that Cisco needs to update the firmware to allow you to enter dns values on the staic page because if you set the E4200 to obtain an IP address automatically then it receives good DNS info. You can verify my results by looking at the staus page in staic and dynamic mode.
I hope this helps people that are having problems.......
(Mod Note: Edited due to non-compliance of forum guidelines.)
Your findings are correct. However I don't see where adding a static DNS would work. What Cisco needs to do is provide the DNS of the connected gateway for internet access when in bridge mode for guest connections. Then restrict routing to just the gateway for internet access and no local routing.

  • Guest Network not working in latest Airport Extreme

Just bought the latest Airport Extreme (802.11ac), and want to enable the Guest Network.
    - Installed latest firmware
    - Set Airport in Bridge Mode
    - Enabled Wireless Network
    - Enabled Guest Network
There is no connecting to Guest Network (iphone) and if possible (macbook) there is no internet.
With a previous version of Time Capsule, the Guest Network in the same setting worked like a charm.
Anybody seen this before or is the Airport Extreme working different than a Time Capsule?

According to the theory what you are saying about the A1355 is not possible.. ie there is no guest in bridge.. I have tested it and can assure you it did NOT work.. it fooled me into thinking it should and I spent many hours working on it.. our forum expert here.. Bob Timmons set me straight.
Now I am always a believer in voodoo and gremlins and maybe the tooth fairy when it comes to wireless.. it is about 80% of the above and 20% science.. so please do the test again and see if it is possible.. but I can assure you.. apple have set guest network to off in bridge.
There are ways around it.. complicated methods. ie if you extend wireless to your TC.. from another apple router where the router is on, then guest can be used. You can also use a managed switch to set vlans for the guest.
See the following which I used to research this topic.

  • Guest Network Not Working On Airport Time capsule

Whenever I enable the guest network and join it, it joins fine. but it wont load any webpages or the app store, or anything. all the devices im trying to connect, connect to the guest network fine. but they just wontt get wifi signal from the TC.
I can get the normal and 5GHz network to work.
I have the TC router connected to a Tp Link modem and setup as its own network.
If i change the router mode on the TC to DHCP and NAT it works but the amber light flashes on the TC which annoys me. then it stops working and i end up having to change under network in airport utility to off (bridge mode)
    Please help somebody???
Any help will be much appreciated

Check the client is getting proper DNS address .. there is a bunch of bugs..
The main bug is that guest network does not actually work when the TC is in off bridge mode.. it looks like it is going to work but it doesn't.
The TC must be the main router of the network..
So bridge your TP-Link and use PPPOE client in the TC if that is allowed by your ISP.
Or simply ignore the double NAT and then the light will go green and not bother you any more..
Or an even better solution.. use the TP-Link wireless for guest.. and use the TC in bridge for main network.. there is nothing wrong with doing that.. and in fact it will work far better since guest network is still sharing the wireless on the TC and slowing it down.

  • Guest account not working

    Guest WiFi is not working.

We need a bit more information to be able to help.
Are you saying that the Guest Network was working before and is now not working?
Or, that you are trying to set up the Guest Network for the first time?
The Guest Network requires that the Time Capsule be connected to a simple modem.......not a modem/router or gateway type of device that is often furnished by Internet Service Providers.
Can you provide the make and model number of the device that you call your "modem", so we can check on compatibility with the Guest Network feature?

  • Guest SSID not working

Hi all, im trying to configure the MSM760 to work with Guest SSID via HTML authentication.im facing the problem that i can get IP address, i can ping to outside, but i cant open anything in the broswer, it seems there is DNS resolving issue.anyway.i have disconnected this controller from teaming yesterday, and the team works with two SSID's1. NPS SSID which is used for Domain users authentication2. HTML uses authentication  the NPS SSID was always ok, but the Guest was not working, and as i understand from some reading in here that the Guest SSID will not work properly in Teaming.so i disconnected this Controller and and changed the management IP address to new range. and started to test but i didnt get success with browsing.also the NPS authentication on it stopped and i cant get it to work. any advice? thanks in advance.

FYI this is for HP wireless product and networking not support another company product. For that you need to go to their support site and ask for further help from them.

AirPort Time Capsule. Read everything and tried everything. Can't get a guest network to work. Switched from bridge mode and still doesn't work. Anyone able to set up a guest network?

I had a bright house cable modem that also had built-in wi-fi.
Don't mean to be picky here, but if the "modem" had built in Wi-Fi, it was not a modem. It was a modem/router, also known as a gateway type of device.
A device like this combines the functions of a separate modem and separate router in one package. Turning off the wireless on a device like this does not make a it modem.....it is still a modem/router or gateway with the WiFi turned off.
I think that if I have them replace the current "complicated" modem with a "simple" one I should be able to get the guest network up and running.
That would be correct. Hopefully, they offer this type of option for their customers.

  • MacBook Air wifi internet shared network not working on tethered android phone GT B5122

MacBook Air wifi internet shared network not working on tethered android phone GT B5122
I have created a password protected wifi internet network on my Macbook air. I tethered by Andriod phone onto this network, but the internet connection works intermittently on the phone, and when it stops working the network continues to show as connected to the shared network mostly(other times it keeps renewing the wifi IP address on the Andriod phone).
Also the network the MBA is connected to, is a hardwired one using a SSH login account in a student accomadations.
I am not sure, but all the restarting and refreshing of system, phone and wifi sharing and re-enabling wifi is not reparing the internet connecting on the wifi network for the phone
Really puzzled, if this is one of the Apple, Andriod compatability issues.
    Cheers,

    Hi.
I'm having trouble with the wireless connection on my new home hub 3. Most devices will connect easily, but there are three devices that have trouble connecting. These are an Android Phone (Samsung Galaxy Mini), an android tablet (Sony Tablet S) and an iPod. All of these devices work perfectly on other network connections, and other devices in the house are quite happy connecting to the network.
The Androids can see the network, and will try to connect to it, but when they do they just go through a loop of "connecting">>"acquiring IP address">>"disconnected". I have tried resetting the Home Hub with a pin, and that lets the devices connect for about 24 hours, but after that time they stop connecting again.
I'm really not sure what to do to fix the problem, so I will very much appreciate some help.
    Many Thanks.
My lads SGMini connects perfectly to our hub3
Have you installed the BTFon app to these devices?
If so, you could delete it and then see what hapens.....

  • EA4500 guest network re-authentication doesn't work

I have successfully set up a guest network on my EA4500. Guest laptop associates with guest SSID just fine. Then via IE, it gets prompted for the guest password, which is entered and accepted just fine. At this point guest laptop is on the network. Hooray!
BUT... at some point the guest laptop will need to reauthenticate (I don't know what the timeout is, but maybe one or two days?). Anyway, it's at this point that IE presents the guest network login page. But now after typing in the password, "enter" or clicking on the button does nothing. It looks like the guest web page doesn't get loaded properly or completely, so the reauthentication can't complete, therefore can't get to the internet. So, while in this state, I've also tried Firefox and Chrome, and same thing, no action when trying to submit the guest password. Tried rebooting guest laptop, and still same problem. Only thing I've found so far that works is to reboot the router. So I'm guessing there's a problem with the guest/web server on the router?? It's a real pain to have to reboot the router every day or two, when I've had other Linksys routers run for months without having to touch them.
I was running CCC 2.1.38 when I first noticed the problem. Since then I've downgraded to Classic 2.0.37, but it seems I still have the same problem. Again, I can connect & authenticate just fine initially, but when reprompted after some period of time, it doesn't work.
I've tried contacting Cisco support, but it looks like I'm at 91 days since purchase and thus outside of my 90-day complimentary support, so they happily provided me with the premium support options just to have the honor of talking with them. Guess I shouldn't have spent so much time trying to figure this out myself.
I've searched the forums here, but so far haven't found any answers (I do see posts where the guest web page isn't presented at all, but in my case the page is presented, just can't do anything). Anyone seen this or have any ideas?

jaymay -- I agree there's no harm in a reset; just the time to reconfigure, reenter DHCP reservations, etc. I'll keep this as an option as I troubleshoot, but see next...
TEXXSHARKK -- good news/bad news ... I ended up not yet resetting. Instead, since I had this problem first with CCC firmware 2.1.38 (Build 138828 - the automatically pushed update), I reverted back to Classic 2.0.37. Still same problem with guest re-authentication. Only workaround was to reboot the router. That's when I first posted.
So, since I had the problem with both CCC and Classic firmware, I ended up going back to CCC. To do that, I needed to manually update, which is 2.1.38 (Build 138880 for web manual download only). SInce (re)updating the firmware, I haven't had a repeat of the original problem. It's been about a week now, and the guest laptop has gone through a number of re-authentications, all without problem. For continued troubleshooting, I've been periodically connecting my iPad, BlackBerry, etc, to the guest network, and they get through the authentication page just fine as well. So that's the good news in that the problem "seems" to have gone away.
The bad news is that it's still unexplained:
    - There's what I assume is a just a minor build difference between the two CCC firmwares, so it seems unlikely that would make a difference?
    - Could be just the fact of reburning the firmware corrected whatever the problem was -- a la doing a reset, even though I didn't reconfigure, just firmware (re)update
    - Could be the problem is still there biding its time, waiting for me to think it's forever gone, only to pounce again
If the problem does reappear, I'll update here.

  • Primary network does not work, guest network does work

I updated the firmware on the Time Capsule, after which we had a power outage. When the Time Capsule came back up, after a bunch of fiddling around we discovered that although the primary network cannot connect the Internet through our phone system router, the guest network works fine. The primary network does not work with the guest network turned off. Resetting the Time Capsule had no effect.

After an entire day of messing around, we went into Airport Utility, selected Internet, selected DHCP, and changed DHCP Beginning Address to match the one showing on the guest network (172.16). Now the primary network can see the Internet.

  • Guest WiFi not working correctly

I just bought a new EA6300 router expecially for it's guest wifi functionality but i have problems with this feature.
weather i log in via my laptop/ macbook/ android or iphone i can connect to the guest wifi network but the guest wifi portal is not displayed and i cannot login as guest.
After a reset of the router the guest wifi works for a little while but fails within couple of hours.
Is this a firmware bug or does someone knows a workaround.
Hope Linksys can help me with this standard build in feature!!!
    Thanks in advance.

Hey there, bramschats! Intermittent guest network connection may be caused by wireless interference. Try changing the wireless channel of your router to either 1, 6, 9, or 11. You may also want to change your security settings to WPA2 Personal. That should take care of the intermittent connection. If all else fails, update the router's firmware.
There is no "I"in the word Team.
    (moxx)
hi blue_butterfly: I would kindly suggest a better way to do what you suggest. It would be best to troubleshoot the problem by looking first to see if there actually is congestion. there are apps available for free to see what channels are being used. By randomly moving to another channel you may cause others to then be interfered with causing them to move and the problem just continues to move around. Also, the only wifi channels that don't overlap (at least here in the USA) are channels 1, 6, and 11.  All the other channels cause at the very least a small amount of signal degragation to the adjacent channel. So try to find the app for whatever device you can use, android or iPhone and see what is actually out there, select the channel with the lowest signals on it and see if that helps. The channels in between 1, 6 and 11 can certainly be tried but just be aware that they are the least advisable ones to use.
@ bramschats: if you are able to use the guest login at some times but then it doesn't work after a while try refreshing your browser before you re-boot the router. If that still doesn't work and the only way to fix it is to reboot the router complain to belkin about it. There seems to be a lot of bugs in their software lately and the only way we will get their attention is to complain, return deivces etc.

  • Bridged networking not working with nested VMware Workstation

I am having an issue that I can't seem to find any answer to....
We are running Vsphere 5.5 and I have 2 Guests each running Windows 7 64-bit.  Each of these guests has VMware Workstation 10 running on them.  When we P2V the systems we followed all the instructions to allow nested VMware Workstation.  However, we are running into an issue where the Bridged Networking will not work.  Both of the Win7 guests are on the same vlan and all of the VMs in Workstation are on the same network as well.  However, while the 2 Windows 7 guests can ping each other and each of the guests can ping the VMs that are hosted locally, they cannot connect to the systems on the other guest running workstation.
I tried to upgrade the Guest NIC to VMXNet3, but that did not help.
All of the research I have done brings me to people who are having the opposite problem (ESXi nested in VMware Workstation).
How can I get the 2 bridged networks to connect?
    Thanks!

The ESXi vSwitch to which the outer guests are connected must be configured for promiscuous mode and forged transmits.

  • Can connect to guest network, not main network.

I have a Time Capsule setup that works great. I have several Macs that run fine on the network. I have one older Power PC that will connect to the Time Capsule's guest network but not the main network despite having the correct password. Every time I try it says "connection failed." Ideas?

This information tells you that the Power Mac is not capable of connecting to a network using WPA2 Personal encryption.
Since we've drifted far away from a potential Time Capsule issue at this point, your best option will be to post in one of the Power Mac forums to see if there might be a way to upgrade the operating system to a level where it would support WPA2 Personal encryption.

  • Apple Airport Express guest network not really secure?

I've setup several of these devices and they work quite well but I setup the guest network on one and it's in the 172.X.X.X range and the local network is actually on the 192.X.X.X network. If I go to Start and Run and type in \\server it doesn't work but if I do \\192.168.1.2 it asks for the server credentials and allows someone to pull data! That's not a true "guest" network! Is this expected and normal? Do I need to return this device to the store and use something that actually protects the internal network?

It is not actually expected and normal. The guest network should be on a separate vlan to the main network. So even if you can get connection without wireless credentials the only access should be to the internet.
Tell us a bit more of the setup.
What is the main router? Is it setup to isolate vlans?
What about the switch.. again if it is managed or not and how are vlan setup?
What you might find is the Express is designed to work with the Extreme and in extend wireless mode where the network is correctly vlan isolated.
Have you tried another brand of wireless AP, with a guest mode.. because this might actually be a problem of the main router.. as it should not allow access.
I am not saying the Express are perfect by any means.. and people do occasionally report guest network functioning when it should not be.
What is model and firmware they are running.. ?
Are they plugged into the network by ethernet and setup in bridge.. then create a wireless network? Is it setup for roaming rather than extend or have you mixed them??
In the case where you use them in roaming.. the guest network should not work unless there is an airport extreme running as main router to provide vlan support.. or you have a managed switch.

  • TC guest network stopped working after last update

Hi, I got the new 2TB TC. And it was working fine. Since I updates it to 7.7.3. The guest network stopped assigning IPs. I can see it and change the settings but I can't join it anymore. It was working fine before.
I Am setting it from iOS devices not a Mac.
The TC is in bridging mode.
I Also tried restoring it to default settings.
Any ideas how to fix this?
    Thank you.

I had it working right out of the box when I bought it, there was no double NAT warning or error message, unlike now I have to ignore the double. NAT error message for the light on the TC to turn back to green again.
