EA4500 - poor parental access controls.

What's great about it: Easy to setup. Fast. Good range.
What's not so great: Parental controls are limited to the point of being useless for my needs.
I love this router but it's going back. The parental access controls are extremely limited. Limited to the point of being useless IMO. For instance, I can't restrict access to Tues - Friday 3:00PM - 8:00PM. The router also predefines weekends and school days and you are limited to a time limit that begins in PM and ends in AM. Your defined end time must be after midnight because you are limited to an AM ending time. The router defines weekends as Saturday - Sunday. What about holiday weekends? No way to account for that in the access controls. It's very limiting and frustrating for a high dollar router. If you don't have use for access controls, it's a great router.

I have to agree. I set this up on Friday, gave it the weekend to run and see how it works. Tonight I read pages upon pages about how to get the parental controls to work -the number one reason I bought this one. I watched my son using skype, minecraft, facebook and youtube right under my nose while I reset and reset and reset the parental controls to block those sites on his PC.
The cloud is not there.  Apps? What apps? Misleading. There is a Droid app that is almost useless as it has no parental control. And the setting for limiting access? Give me a break. Who designed that data set, a kid?
It was presented as if this device would have apps to be able to customize the operation. That would be good. Where are the apps?
Its going back by Wednesday just because I have already sold my old DGL-4300 and now I have to get another router. NetGear here I come again.  Oh, please please please spare me the posting of  two links to how to set up the parental controls with the web interface or Cisco Connect. The issue is NOT that I don't know how to use the feature. The issue is the feature is sufficiently lacking in scope and options. It sucks.

    The EA4500 and the rest of the Linksys Smart Wifi routers have a streamlined Parental Controls feature. It allows time- based restriction and website blocking per device. This feature solely restricts access and does not have the option to permit certain devices to have access to the internet (during specific times) or selected websites.
    If Netproofer does quite work as it should, you can install and reinstall the app. If you're still having issues, contact the app developer.

  • My kids have figured a workaround for the internet access control

    I was quite happy with Network Magic until my kids rendered it fairly ineffective by a simple workaround. The internet access control seems to be tied into each PC's clock. So, my kids simply change the time on the computer and ... Voila! Internet access whenever the parents aren't around. I was kind of hoping the internet access schedule would be linked to the time on the router. I'm hoping this can be fixed.

    Hi, set your kids user accounts to not be admins, and set the BIOS password, this will migate that workaround.

    Is it possible to keep track of the quantity of internet content received(in bytes) on a client machine?
    How does the proxy server allow or disallow internet access to a subset of clients (or one client) in the LAN to which it is connected.

  • Doubt in access control mechanisms.

    I have a very basic doubt in access control mechansim.
    Why in Java a class is not allowed to be declared as a private class?
    Is there any specific reason other than that all the methods and data will become unavailable?

    Object oriented world is similar to the real world. Lets say there an apple which is not accessble to any one, than what is the use of having the apple in this world.
    Similar to this, private class is of no use.
    But you can create inner class as private class, as this class is accessble to the parent class.

  • Create user menus in hierarical tree with access control

    I am facing problem in populating user menus in hirarical against user access control.
    I have table of menus in which i populate data as:
    Menu
    - Sub Menu 1
    -- Form 1
    -- Form 2
    -- Form 3
    - Sub Menu 2
    -- Form 4
    -- Form 5
    -- Form 6
    Now I have created hierarical query as:
    SELECT -1, LEVEL, menu_name, NULL, id
    FROM menu_opt
    START WITH parent_id IS NULL
    CONNECT BY PRIOR menu_id = parent_id
    and menu_id in
    (3, 4);
    Note: where menu_id 3 = Form 1, Menu_id 4 = Form 2.
    If I allow only menu ID 3 and 4 (not parents menus) then Hierarchy should be completed from top to bottom. What change i have to made to achieve my target?

    Sorry, it's very unclear what you want to do.
    Whenever you have a problem, please post CREATE TABLE and INSERT statements for a little sample data, and the results you want from that sample data.
    Say which version of Oracle you're using, e.g. 11.2.0.2.0. This is always important, but especially so with CONNECT BY queries, because every version since Oracle 7 has had significant improvements in this area.

    If you can show the problem using commonly available tables (such as scott.emp or hr.employees, both of which contain trees) then you don't need to post any sample data; just the results you want and an explanation of how you get those results.
    For example, I think you're asking something like this:
    "I want to show the hierarchy in scott.emp, but I only want to show certain nodes and their descendants. For example, if I ask for 'MILLER' and 'SCOTT', I would want to see

  • Airport time access control not working for iPhones-

    Hi,
    I use a 3rd generation Airport Extreme base for my WiFi hme network.
    For parental control, I'd like to allow one iPhone and iMac to be connected only for some hours of the day.
    So I have activated the timed access control and entered the relevant MAC addresses and the time to be connected.
    It seems that the iMac is well restricted as it should, but the iPhone has no limitation…
    Why is it not effective for the iPhone ? The iPhone MAC address (Wi-Fi Address) doen't work in this case ?

  • Home hub 5 access controls

    The access controls in the HH5 allow restrictions on a time basis - is there any way of setting different time limits on different days? Eg I want to restrict access on school days but be less constrained during the weekend. I have had other routers in the past that allow me to do this but HH5 does not appear to be as flexible. Comments appreciated.

    If you are happy to apply restrictions to all devices, so they cannot access sites that would interfere with homework, then the new BT parental controls may be a better option.

  • WRT 120 Internet Access Control Problem for itouch

    I've just set up my router. Cannot seem to control access to the internet for my son's itouch. The router recognizes it on the map as a wireless device part of the network, but it will not show up in the menu that allows for internet access control. My lap top shows up, but no itouch. I'm running Windows XP home premium edition - not sure if this makes a difference.

    Open the linksys setup page...Under the Wireless tab,Change the Channel Width to 20MHz only,Channel to 11 and click on save settings...Under the Advanced Wireless Settings,Change the Beacon Interval to 75,Change the Fragmentation Threshold to 2304,Change the RTS Threshold to 2304 and Click on Save Settings... 
    On the I-Touch..Go to Settings>>>General>>>Reset>>>Now select Reset Network Settings.This will now reboot and restore you network connections.

    I have a Time Capsule where I have set up a wireless network access list…and extended the network using an Airport Express unit. The Airport Express unit also has settings for an Access Control list. Do these need to be the same as the those for the network from TC that it is extending…or does that happen automatically…and if not what on earth are they for?

    Unfortunately, they are not automatically applied to each base station in an extended network. You would have to manually enter the exact same list in each base station.

  • How do I set up timed access control for a time past midnight

    I would like to set up timed access control for a number of my devices that would stretch past midnight...   An open network from 6AM to 2AM - effectively only blocking access from 2AM tp 6AM in the morning....
    Any notion on how to do this?  the timed factily does not like the setting to enable 6A to 2A, says the times are invalid. 
    Setting up timed access from 6AM to 11:59P, then doing another from 12A to 2A causes a service "hiccup" of 1 Minute.

    Set up each device as follows:
    Everyday........Between.......6:00 AM and 11:59 PM
    Add a second rule for each device that will state....
    Everyday.....Between.......12:00 AM and 2:00 AM
    You might think that there would be a one minute break between 11:59 PM and 12:00 AM, but that will not be the case, at least on every AirPort that I have ever programmed..  Reason.....11:59 is really 11:59:59:59 turning off at 12:00 AM.  But, you have a second rule to allow access at 12:00 AM, so the AirPort will be "on" at the same time the first rule ends, so there will be no break.
    If you really want the second rule to turn the AirPort "off" at 2:00 AM.......then set that time for 1:59 AM. If you set the rule for 2:00 AM, then AirPort will really turn off at 2:01 AM.

  • To run OHS at port 80 using solaris role based access control

    Hi.
    I already know & have done setuid root to ohs/bin/.apachectl to allow ohs to listen to port 80. Now on a new OFM 11.1.1.4 install, I want to use Solaris Role Based Access Control (RBAC) instead. Is it possible? RBAC does work as I can run a home built apache2 httpd at port 80 withOUT suid root.
    On Solaris 10, I enabled oracle uid to run process below port 1024 using RBAC
    /etc/user_attr:
    oracle::::type=normal;defaultpriv=basic,net_privaddr
    Change OHS httpd.conf Listen from port 8888 to port 80.
    However, opmnctl startproc process-type=OHS
    failed as below with nothing showing in the diag logs:

    Just to add my two cents here.
    The commando used on Solaris to assign the right privilege to bind TCP ports < 1024 is:
    # usermod -K defaultpriv=basic,*net_privaddr* <your_user_name>
    Restart the opmnctl daemond.
    After that OHS/Apache user can bind to lower TCP ports.

  • SharePoint Provider Hosted App (401) Unauthorized Microsoft.SharePoint.SPException: The Azure Access Control service is unavailable

    I'm attempting to get a SharePoint 2013 Provider Hosted Application working in a brand new SharePoint environment.  I've created snapshots of both my dev and the sharepoint environments along the way and have meticulously documented every step of the
    way.  I've followed these instructions (among many other resources found along this journey) :

    Upon package and publish of my application to SharePoint, I get a 401 Unauthorized error.  I use Fiddler to obtain the SPErrorCorrelationID to ultimately obtain the following ULS Viewer Output.  Please explain how to fix if you're able.
    Please Note:  I was under the impression that a Provider Hosted Application does not use the Azure Access Control service, so I'm confused as to why my system is attempting to make this connection?
    Also Note:  I've used a self signed and godday obtained certificate to successfully f5 debug my basic web.title (out of the visual studio 2012 box) sharepoint provider hosted application... so I know my certs are good.

    Yes, actually - I was able to resolve it.
    However I don't know how, unfortunately.  I suspect it was because I needed to have the names of the certificates, defined during the certificate registration (to sharepoint) process, different.
    I have a complete document that shows step by step instructions on the exact process I took to complete the provider hosted application creation, deployment and publishing.  It was a daunting task, but I finished it successfully.
    If there's a way to send private message on this forum, please do so and I'll respond with a way to obtain my document.
    NOTE:  I'm not all impressed with the way this forum works.  This is supposed to be a Microsoft resource and I'll be damned if I ever get a response to highly technical questions.  Completely lame.  Boooooo Microsoft.
