EA6500 and Media Prioritization (MagicJack)

I just recently purchased the EA6500 (Linksys-branded AC 1750) and have been trying to figure out the Media Prioritization widget. I thought that by adding my two MagicJack devices to the Prioritization list it might help with the outbound bandwidth allocations and provide for a better call experience. When I go into the settings and attempt to assign an Upstream Bandwidth allocation of, say, 128K, each time I change it and say Ok, It says that it's applying the settings. When I go back in the Upstream setting has returned to 0.
Any recommendations on how to get MJ to the top of the queue to help my call quality?
Thanks!

It seems that your router is not saving the settings. Try to reset and reconfigure the router. If ever it is the same after that, update the firmware version to the latest. You can either do it automatically or manually. The firmware is available from Cisco’s homesupport.cisco.com website.

  • EA6500 and Media Prioritization

Just got my EA6500 today along with the WUMC710 media connector.  I used the media connector to hook my Roku 3 up to for now.
After setting up the router, I put the Roku 3, the media connector and my son's Xbox as a priority under media prioritization - which I believe is a fancy word for QoS.
Anyway, after setting the QoS up, my router (which is hardwired to my main PC) had knocked my Internet speed down by 20Mbps!
I disabled media prioritizatioin and the speed is back up to (or fairly close to) 50Mbps.  Why does this setting slow the speed down so much?
I checked the router's firmware and it is the latest.
Does anyone know if the prioritization feature actually works?  I had this QoS setting on my older TrendNet router and it screwed things up too.  There are 2 Roku's in the house and I'd like to make sure the main one has priority.  But if slower Internet speeds are the consequence, then forget it.
    Thanks for any replies..

Hi. QoS will prioritize multimedia devices in the network. For QoS/WMM to work properly without dropping the connection for other devices in the network, make sure that the other devices in the network have an updated driver that supports 802.11e. And you also need to specify the correct and actual bandwidth you're getting from the ISP. To do this, connect your main computer to the modem and do SpeedTest. Take note of the actual Upload and Download speeds then type it on the router under QoS/WMM.

  • Ping go's up on EA6500 when media prioritization (QOS) is enabled

I've noticed that my pings on  all my devices go up when I enable QOS.
This even happens on the PC which has high priority.
The ping times go up by an average of 6ms, so if I normally have a 14 ping to a host it will now be 21.
I've tested this by turning media prioritization on and off and everytime its turned on this seems to happen, although sometimes it requires a router or pc reboot before the issue arrises.
Is their any fix for this?

I would expect that when Media Prioritization is enabled your ping would go up a little bit.
Think about it this way: Without media prioritization on, the router simply passes any request through; however, when it is on, the router has to check whether or not the device is set to take priority over the other devices and proceeds from there, which will add a little more to the response time.
In my opinion I don't see 6 ms extra being all that much of a problem, especially with such a low ping in the first place. Though, that certainly depends on what you're doing. The only "fix" to this would probably have to be implemented by Cisco, besides disabling various features to try and gain back the 6 ms. Again, this is my opinion and I'm not an expert on how exactly these things are implemented besides being a programmer myself and generally adding additional checks will increase processing time. As for how much, that depends on implementation and what needs to be done.

  • WRT1900AC and media prioritization questions......

So, I am a bit confused. And the Linksys manual does not go into full detail or explain. I get the part where you drag the device you want up top and for get about it. I am confused though about the "Applications and Online Games" areas. Say for example. I have a PS4. I noticed you can select the Sony Network under Applications and drag it. Would that be the same if I moved my PS4 up top as a device? I don't get how it works. If I did not move up my PS4 device and decided to use "Applications" instead and picked Sony Network. Does the router know some how I have a PS4 in my device list?

I was noticing in my settings with my WRT1900AC. Running latest firmware version btw. I also use the local login in settings and not smart wifi. Any ways. I noticed this even in the manual. It shows that you can set downstream and upstream? Yet mine only shows downstream? I am on 100mb/5mb cable internet connection. Those numbers I did not put in myself. I guess the router did. Picture attached. My main concern is giving my Ooma Telo phone highest priority. Maybe I don't even need it though as my connection is pretty fast? Also please note. Just for giggles.
I decided to turn in on and throw Ooma at highest priority. I then done a speed test. It capped my download to about 96mb down. When I usually test between 100mb-102mb. Not a huge difference. But, is this to be expected? Like I said earlier. I did not touch the numbers that was already filled in by the router. I also turned it back off for now. Pending more information on this. And I hit my 100mb+ that is slightly over just fine again.

  • EA6500 and Synology Diskstation

I just got this new router to replace my Linksys 4200v2.
I have a Synology DS710+ and was able to use the IOS Apps DS Photo and DS Cam locally and remotely using the same login info. I use DYNDNS for my IP address and I forwarded my ports to my local ip address of my DS710+.
Problem I have with the new router is that I can connect remotly but not locally using my dyndns login. To use apps locally I have to put in my local address assigned from my router. What happened and why is it not working correctly any longer. I matched everything up like my last configuration.
Now here is where it gets interesting. If I give my Synology diskstation media prioritization then it works locally. Problem is then my download speed goes to a crawl on the entire network. My speedtest goes from 35 Down to 1 down ! Even though the reserved speed is nowhee close to effect it that much.

    Hope you could provide some more specific details on the problem you're having thru this router so we could understand fully. Try to check these links;

  • EA6500 and Blocking Apps/Blocking Ports

So I bought the EA6500 yesterday, to replace my E3200.
Formerly, with the E3200, I was able to block applications on the router admin page, without blocking all internet access, under the "Access Restrictions" Tab. I could create access policies that allowed internet access to specific devices, while blocking port ranges/protocols for specific applicatons. while this didn't work for Skype, which jumps from one port to the other until it finds an open one, it worked perfectly for World of Warcraft. the primary target of my restrictions.
in common with the old setup for the E3200, the new cloud login allows me to block internet access completely to a device. it also allows me to block websites to my heart's content, an improvement upon the old system, which stopped at four. but to my great surprise, it will not allow me to specify port blockages for specific apps for specific devices.
amazingly, hile the new EA6500 is blessed with the added capability of actually recognizing applications by name, *it is only to give them greater priority*. the Media Prioritization tab lets you give a ton of your bandwith to specific apps, but won't let you throttle or block them.
Is there some way to work around this? Some alternative firmware? again, I don't want/need to block all internet access to a particular computer. I only need to block some apps (World of Warcraft, and Skype, possibly some torrents) by closing some ports.
    Is this possible?

Why would they need to take away that feature? it seems I'm not the only one who wondered at this omission...

  • E4200 Router Media Prioritization Fails to Load

    Hi,
My E4200 router works fine in the sense that I have access to the internet through it. However, if I try to configure Media Prioritization through the Smart WiFi Tools interface, I simply get an endless "Waiting" 8-dot animated icon showing on the screen forever, with no further response from that browser window. When this happens, I still have internet access through other tabs in the open browser.
I have: Windows 7 Pro, It happens in Internet Explorer, Firefox, and Chrome - all the latest Windows versions. Most of the time, the only way to get it stop is to clear the browser cache or, sometimes, reboot the router.
The router has the latest verson of the firmware, which is 2.1.41.162351. I have updated the firmware several times to this same version, including a factory reset. Nothing helped.
Any ideas? (Buy a new router, probably).
    Thanks,
    Peter Wilde

"2112 error" is typically due to a browser cache issue. Clear the browser cache for the IP Address of the router and for www.linksyssmartwifi.com

  • Error 2123 When Saving Media Prioritization Settings in Cisco Cloud Connect

There are several features that don't work and are returning errors.  For starters, when trying to save settings for media/device prioritization I am receiving a 2123 error message.  Unable to save settings.  EA4500/N900 Router, Cisco Cloud Connect.

As a workaround, try to reset the media prioritization settings on the router then check again, http://kb.linksys.com/Linksys/ukp.aspx?vw=1&docid=9bf7b6e25b984839aecbff2fcbd8c20e_How_to_reset_the_.... Thank FurryNutz, the router works as it should.
    Spoiler (Highlight to read)
The error was in the imported data from the previous firmware.
Reestablished and the router will load the configuration and the error returned.
Then again reestablished, reinstall the firmware and configure everything manually.

  • EA6700 Media Prioritization Not Loading

I just discovered this problem today.  My firmware version is 1.1.40.160989.  I used to be able to use this feature just fine.
Everything else is working for my router, but the Media Prioritization is not loading at all.  When I try to open it, I get the "Waiting" box with moving dots in a circle.  It just gets stuck there, and I have to clear my cache in order to return to the regular screen.
So I tried to download the app on my phone to access it from there as well.  And it just says "Unexpected Error" and recommends that I contact Linksys support.  Please help me.  Thanks.

Unfortunately if this continues you may have to reset to factory defaults and reconfigure.

  • Linksys EA6900 (AC1900) "Media Prioritization" Set-up Question

Got the new Linksys EA6900 router (coming from Asus routers) and I'm trying to set the the 'media prioritization' for my iPad and my iPhone. I want those 2 devices to have top priority for streaming and facetime, etc.
I'm not really sure how this works but when I drag up both of those devices to the "High Priority" section, in the SETTINGS section the "downstream bandwidth" shows a number of '24469 Kbps.'
Is this suggested number value okay or can I bump it (or lower it) to get BETTER performance for the iPad and the iPhone?

The answer is it all depends on what you are trying to accomplish, as I learned the hard way. For some reason, my Downstream Bandwidth defaulted to 3092 Kbps on my router, even though my actual downsteam is about 12.5Mbps. After I enabled Media Prioritization and placed my two SIP phone devices in the the high priority category, I noticed that everything else on my network was moving at a snails pace. I ran a speed test on Ookla and found that my internet speed was being throttled at 3Mbps for EVERYTHING on my network!!! After bumping this value to 15000 Kbps, I retested and I was able to get my full download speed on my pc again.
So, what does this mean? This Downstream Bandwidth setting determines the MAXIMUM download speed that is available to all devices behind the router, even the ones in your high priority class! Therefore, YOU MUST SET THIS VALUE TO SOMETHING HIGHER THAN YOUR ACUAL DOWNSTREAM BANDWIDTH, if you DON'T want to limit your internet connection speed. Otherwise, you will be choking your internet conneciton unnecesarily!
Prior to figuring this out, I was paying for 12Mbps, but unknowingly choking my internet connection to 3Mbps by this hidden setting. I hope this helps save someone else from the same pain that I went through.
P.S. This value is the absolute maximum downstream speed that your router will allow. Therefore, you should set this to something WELL ABOVE what you actually expect to get. For example, as a test I set mine to 6000 Kbps, but in testing was only able to get an average of 4.6 Mbps. This is because your downloads are never at a constant bit rate. If you set this at your advertised line rate, you will be clipping the peak speed of your internet connection, and thus choking your overall throughput.
P.P.S. I should mention that I am testing with an EA6300, not the EA6900, just in case there are any differences in the firmware.

It is called QOS (Quality of Service) for this router. It is under the Applications and Gaming Tab. This one let's you set priority for internet bandwidth to certain application or device. By the way, If you want a simplier way of doing Media Prioritization, try Linksys' Smart Routers.

  • WRT1900AC cannot get into media prioritization

    Hi Guys,
i have my new WRT1900AC router fully configured. in the last 2 days from some odd reason i simply cannot get to the media prioritization section. Whenever i do the router just freezes on the "loading" section....when i go via the mobile app i see "an unexpected error occurred in the application"...
The only way to fix it is by rebooting the router, but then same thing i cannot get to the media priority section of the router....
i was able to grab maybe the error at some point:
    http://linksys.com/jnap/qos/GetQoSSettings : {} -- Status: 200 OK Content-Type: application/json; charset=utf-8 Connection: close Content-Length: 276 Date: Sun, 27 Jul 2014 15:59:38 GMT Server: lighttpd/1.4.34
it says status 200 OK but thats the error itself... doesnt make sense...
    Things i have tried:
    Manually re-flashing the latest firmware.
reset the router to default (the it start working) but as soon as i restore my own config it breaks again...
i assume if i reset the router to defaults and then start again to configure it section by section from scrath it most likely will work.
but my own config is a lot a lot a lot of work and i am trying to avoid that......
any way to read an advanced log of the API call made to the router when i try to get to that section? or a way to troubleshoot this without start  from scratch?
    thank you.

  • When placing a PDF created with Distiller, I only get Crop and Media as import options -- I need it to crop to the Trim! PLEASE HELP!

I'm having a MAJOR problem placing PDF files in InDesign CS4...
When I try to place a PDF that has been created in Distiller, the ONLY import options I can choose are CROP and MEDIA. I need it to crop to the TRIM, but that option is grayed out. The PDFs I'm trying to place were created in-house, and converted from Post Script files to PDFs using Distiller. We use PDF/X-1a equivalent settings when creating our PDFs.
If I export the file as a PDF and then try to place it into a CS4 file, I am able to select Trim as an option.
ALSO, if I open the Distiller PDF in Acrobat and then save it (without changing anything), I am able to select Trim as an option. A workaround I have found is to open all of the PDF files in Acrobat, save them to my desktop, and then save over the ones I need to place. Here's the problem with that: I work for a publishing company, and need to place hundreds of ads for each issue of our publications, and it adds a lot of time if I have to go and re-save everything just to be able to place all the ads.
Does anyone know how to fix this problem? I need to get this figured out so we can use CS4 for all of our publications again. -- We've gone back to using CS3 until I can get this figured out...
    - Valerie

    Steve,
Thanks for the reply, but my PDFs all have trim boxes on them. If I try to place the same PDF in InDesign CS3, it gives me Trim as an option. Also, if I open the PDF and save a copy to my desktop, I am able to select Trim as an option when placing the PDF, and I didn't change anything about it.
I've been trying to see if it's something with the Print Preset settings I'm using, but I can't find anything that seems like it would affect how InDesign would read the Trim area of the PDF.
I've attached 2 PDF files. One that was created with Distiller, and one that was exported from InDesign CS4. The Distiller one doesn't show Trim as an option in CS4, but the exported one does.... but they started out as the same ad.  Ugh!  Help me please!
