EA6500 Bridged to EA4200 V1

Hi,
had a EA4200 about a year now, no probs, very stable, i'm thinking about getting a EA6500, for better coverage, iPhone apps, etc, would like to use my EA4200 in bridge mode from a EA6500,
Has anyone done this ?
Does it work ok ? any probs etc?
I'm a fairly new to networking etc, i'm assuming when the EA4200 is bridged, it will act like a repeater connected by cable, with same SSID ?
Any help anyone could give would be great thanks

Setting up the E4200 on Bridge Mode with the EA6500 router is fine. And you are correct it will act like a wireless repeater to the AC router. And with the E4200 as a secondary router, you have to take note of a few things:

13. Can I set up my router in Bridge Mode?
Yes.  Setting up your E4200 router in Bridge Mode will allow your device to act as an access point or a wireless bridge.  However, take note of the following once you decide to set your device into Bridge mode:
Your device’s DHCP server will be disabled.
Other features of your router such as Firewall, Access Restrictions, and Applications and Gaming, among others will also be disabled.
You will only be able to set the device to Bridge Mode using the web-based setup page.

I am currently running two e4200 routers with one in bridge mode. I have the upgrade itch and curious to know if the EA6500 can run in bridge mode.

    Download the manual here.

  • Wireless bridge be setup - cable modem (downstairs) to a EA4200v1 to a EA6500 (upstairs)?

Hello, I have a question on how to improve my home network. I have Comcast digital cable TV and High speed internet that is very spotty in the coverage in our split-level home.  Currently my home network setup has the cable modem located near the main box in the basement family room and a Cisco Linksys EA6500 centrally located upstairs.  This does not give adequate WiFi coverage to the downstairs basement family and bedroom for Netflix, xBox and laptop computing.
I have a Cisco Linksys EA4200v1 router that I replaced the Cisco Linksys EA6500 with.  Is it possible to hook the EA4200v1 router up straight from the cable modem downstairs and then run the network cable out to the EA6500 upstairs and have them all on the same network?  Would this give me good coverage on both levels of the house?
Thank you so much for any assistance you may be able to provide.

The router on bridge mode would lose all router capabilities. However the wireless capabilities would remain. The USB functionality of the router would also not work when in bridge mode.
Since the router connected to the modem is the EA6500, I suggest you setup the E4200 to bridge mode. Make sure you have the latest firmware installed on the E4200 since the old firmware doesn’t include bridge mode capability.

  • Connecting two EA6500 routers via wireless bridge

Hi, I want to know how can we bridge two EA6500 routers via wireless. I do not want to use the lan cable. Please help.
    Thanks,
    anandp

This setup is not possible. You can only cascade the routers via wired connection. The access points on these routers are mainly transmitters, they're not receivers so you can't associate them wirelessly. You can, however, get a wireless bridge to do the job. Check out the Dual Band N Entertainment Bridge WET610N and Wireless N Universal Media Connector WES610N.

  • EA6500 in Bridge Settings

just set up my EA6500 in bridge mode, i have the ethernet cable plugged into the EA6500's yellow WAN port, is that correct, Cisco Article ID: 24583 is not that clear, Cannot also seem to acces the EA6500's settings to setup security, can anyone help please? Think i must be missing some think.

Yes, you connect the ethernet cable to the EA6500's yellow wan (internet) port when using bridge mode.
You can set up the wireless security before you put it in bridge mode.
    Or.........
Go to your primary/main router settings and look at it's DHCP Client Table.  When you find the EA6500 in it's list, then you just type that IP address in a web browser address window.
The following link uses an example of how to find the DHCP client table for a WRT54g2.  If you post the make and model of your primary router, someone might be able to show you how to find the DHCP client table for that specific router.  Or you can just go through all of your main router's screens, and you'll find it.

If you need to start over, you can just reset the EA6500 to factory defaults by pressing and holding the pin hole reset button for 15 seconds with paper clip.

  • EA6500 on Bridge Mode Issues

After updating the firmware of th EA6500 to Ver.1.1.28.146072 I have no longer access to the GUI options of Speed Test, Guest Access, Parental Controls, Media Prioritization and USB Storage. I have reset the router to factory default settings and still none of the items are showing on the web page the only options available are:
    Connectivity
    Troubleshooting
    Wireless.
Can anybody confirm if is experiencing the same issue with the GUI in Bridge Mode,

It's a good thing that restoring the previous firmware fixed your problem. This might indeed a firmware issue & I'm also hoping that the next firmware version will fix this issue.

  • Bridging from a Netcomm router to my EA6500, duplicate home IP addresses for both devices ?

I'm attempting to bridge from a Netcomm router to my EA6500, I can set the Netcomm into bridging mode no problems and as expected the Internet is gone.
Next step is to access my EA6500 to configure it to manage Internet access however when I try 192.168.1.1 to get to my EA6500 it takes me to the WEB interface for the Netcomm router as it's default IP is also 192.168.1.1, so I'm stuck.
So they have the same default IP address, how do i get to my EA6500 to finish the configuration ???
    Thanks
    Tony

From what you're describing... It doesn't sound like your modem/router is in full bridge mode. Sounds like half bridge.
I guess you could disconnect the EA6500 from modem. Reset EA6500 to factory defaults. Change the local IP address of the EA6500 to 192.168.2.1. And then reconnect the EA6500 back to the modem.

  • WUMC710 bridge disconnects from EA6500 router daily

This HAS been asked before, but the threads are long, and I have yet to glean an answer. All firmware has been updated. It bridges my entertainment system to the router. It had worked great for a very long time, no hiccups. It worked flawlessly. A few months ago it began disconnecting daily. So about a week ago I checked and updated firmware on both boxes. Yet still it disconnects daily. I have to power off the WUMC710 and I'm good for an evenings use. The wireless indicator light above the button on the WUMC710 is off the next day, and so I know I have to repower the unit once again. How can I possibly get back to where I was with such flawless operation?

My WRT1900AC (version 1) will not maintain viable connection to the WUMC710 unless I make the following two 5 GHz band option changes:
    1. Channel: - from “Auto” to “1” (5.805 GHz)
    2. Channel Width: - from “Auto” to “40 MHz” Since it didn’t seem to matter which Channel or Channel Width setting was selected, I suspect the “Auto” setting of each option may be culprit here.  You see I’m an old, retired telecom network engineer.  Back in the day, the use of “Auto” for any equipment option “setting” simply could not be trusted!  Actually, back then “Auto” settings were more for convenience, which is probably not the intention of product design today.  Anyway, the router’s “Auto” setting just may not be working well enough to suite the WUMC710. By the way, I’m also using the current versions of firmware for both the WRT1900AC and WUMC710 (which is comforting). Speaking of firmware, the firmware used in the EA6500 and WRT1900AC is similar.  The “Channel:” you use may be different.  Also, you may want to make sure the Network Mode: is set for “Mixed”. Please note: Network Mode: “Mixed”, and Channel: “Auto”, are said to be required for 802.11ac operation in both the EA6500 and WRT1900AC (ver.1).  So here’s the caveat, this solution, if it works for you, only addresses the WUMC710 “disconnecting” problem.  I do not have the means now to test if true 802.11ac transmission is available.  However, in my network, it’s handling at least 70 Mb/s of very clean through-put with no problems. I’ve tested this using both “speedtest.net”, "pingtest.net" and the WRT1900AC’s built-in Speed Test app (all Ookla). I ordered two WUMC710s a couple of years ago from Cisco/Linksys, on sale for $35 each.  When they arrived, I set each one up to verify it worked, then put both away against the day I felt the need to “stream mass quantities of data”.  Two weeks ago, I pulled one unit out of mothballs to extend my home WiFi network and ran smack into the “disconnecting” problem.  If I ever need really big bandwidth again, I’ll check out one of the newer Belkin/Linksys access point models. This time I’ll test thoroughly and promptly return if there’s a problem. I hope this works for you. Good Luck

  • EA6500 First Day Impressions & Advise.

My first impressions of the EA6500 are a little rocky, anyone who doesn't know router settings like I do or knows their way around web-based browsers probably won't be able to even get online, yes really.  This router has probably in my opinion been rushed out, now don't get me wrong, the hardware is excellent but the software has been rushed and in its current state is rather poor.
    1. Firstly, before you buy this router make sure you pre-download the firmware update for it, otherwise you'll be like me for 2 hrs wondering why you can't get online.  The fact that you cannot even get online without the firmware upgrade is an absolute disgrace, and it was only after a while I remembered about reading about needing a  firmware to get online from this forum.  No firmware upgrade disc, nothing, so I had to log onto next doors internet and download it, then upload it to the router.
So make sure you get the firmware before hand.
    2. After the first major firmware update make sure you then do a full factory default, again I only didn't this after remembering something on these forums, how a regular consumer would know to do this; I have no idea.  If you don't do a full factory reset the router can run fine if left on, but after doing a power cycle cannot connect to the internet in any way.  I later found out  that this was caused by the MAC ADRESSE CLONE being on, and after a factory default this option is turned off, actually after the new firmware and factory default many options are completely different from what they were before.
    3.  So, after you have the firmware, after you have done the factory default the router will work as expected.  The next thing users need to do is add DHCP RESERVATIONS to all devices, and here's why.  Well, one its easyier to control things, and two is labelling.
So, add one devise at a time, the reason for this is it would consider 2 xbox say a networking devise, and you cannot distinguish one devise from the other.  To get around this, turn one devise on at a time, go to devise list and rename it, if its a PC with a name like MARK-PC then that is already enough.  This comes with xboxes, playstations anthing with a generic name, printer, possibly i-phone, those types of devises.  So rename every new devise like this that accesses the network, and you can then distinguish which xbox or which playstation is who's.
    4. WIRELESS, this is my opinion, use channel 1,6 or 11 for 2.4GHz band, I use 11, seems to have much less intererance.  For 2.4GHz use G-ONLY, Im seeing alot of disconnects and packet loss using mixed.
Im not to sure of the 5.0MHz band because I don't use it, I don't use it because I feel there are more lag issues when using 2.4, 5.0 and ac all at the same time, I personally just turn 5.0 and ac off.  Thats for now, things may improve a bit more in a new firmware.
    5. MEDIA PRIORITIZATION & FILTER MULTICAST STREAMS, right now Im turning it off media prioritization, seems to be  potentially causing bandwidth crush on devises that have normal priority.
Im checking filter multicast because it is potentially causing bandwidth crush when streaming from twitch tv or youtube and playing on an xbox.
    6. MTU I used a low MTU on my old router, 1364, just enough for xbox live, after doing so on this router I kept getting lag outs.  After changing the MTU back to auto and checking filter multicast streams, things are back to normal and appear so far to be lag free.
Im personally still trying to figure out what is causing the lag spikes, but its one of the 3, media prioritization, filter multicast or MTU.  I assume this because nothing else controls packets and bandwidth like these 3.
Thanks for reading, this really a first day check list for new users, Ive personally had quite a bit of fun knowing what does what on this router, and after getting a few settings in place it does appear to be a really good router.  For networking noobs however its pretty unacceptable from Linksys, the setup that needs to be done its shocking; pre-firmware.  Maybe in a few firmwares time this router maybe incredible, and I hope it is, but right now it just seems a little un-finished, and a little un-professional right now, but lets hope things change.  This router has huge potential I just hope the software guys at Linksys can keep up.

Ive tried port forwarding and dmz and that didn't change the 2nd xbox in any way, the only way to make the 2nd xbox open NAT was port triggering, but then the first xbox becomes moderate.
Putting the router behind the DMZ also failed and was still moderate.
Ive heard swtches do not work, but I guess I could try putting my old router into bridge mode, but I can't see how bridge mode or using a switch would help or work.  This is just the limitation of NAT routers/modems I guess.
Connecting 2 Xboxes should work thru the router. Please refer to this configuration I've found and try to double-check the settings you've set on both consoles so with the router's.

  • EA6500 WAN IP Release Problem

To all I need to switch back to my old router currently I am using the EA6500 in the GUI of the latest firmware there is no longer a button "Release IP Address" but it has been replaced with "Release and Renew" button this is causing that the IP address lease form ISP never gets released and I can not switch the routers. Please help I need to fix this issue ASAP

As I read from your other post, your ISP is Verizon. How did you set up your old router before with your modem? Was it on DHCP or PPPoE? All you have to do is reconnect your old router back from modem's ethernet port to router's internet port via ethernet cable. If you can get online with the modem again getting an ip address of 192.168.1.xx then to set the old router you change it's ip address to 192.168.2.1. If you were on full bridged mode before with modem then use PPPoE on the router with the correct account username and password for your modem so that it can be authenticated on the router. I have a link below to help you set up your old router again. As for the new router's button under status, I believe it does both and Cisco just made it into one button unlike from before that it is separate.

  • EA6700 in Bridge Mode, How to change password

Evening all....another frustrating day trying to use my highly limited network skills.
Have an EA6700 in bridge mode to extend wireless signal to my gym (read garage with a rowing machine in it!) .... main router is an EA9600. Both units working fine but when I set up the EA6700 Bridge, I left the default password setup instead of making the password the same as the EA9600.
So if I understand right, EA9600 has dhcp on and is 192.168.1.1.....EA6700 Bridge has 192.168.1.138 (this is the IP I read from the device page of the EA9600. I switched dchp off and optioned bridge mode.
I cannot get to the admin page of the EA6700 to change the password. If I put 192.168.1.138 in the google box it comes back with nothing. As I say, this IP comes from the device page of the EA6900.
Anyone point me in the right direction to get to the configuration page of the EA6700 Bridge to change the password to the same as the main EA9600 please? It sounds simple but many hours later :-( .... the perils of an amateur hour trying do tech things.
Just to note, devices in the garage (Sonos box, Panasonic TV, very old Sony laptop) are all hard wired to the EA6700 and work fine for music and video....the reason for the wireless is to connect to a Chromecast in the back of the TV. Also works great I just can't change anything.
Many thanks for any help you can give me .... think I'm close to answer but as normal missing key componets of knowledge

...ouch feared you might say that.
So essentially if you elect to go with bridge mode can you access the configuration pages ...if you have the IP number.
Now as it goes I also have an EA6500 which I'm trying to do the same thing on....e.g bridge mode access point for Chromecast and music bits. So I could try that without spoiling (in the first instance) what I already have working.
I have a proceedure for setting the unit into bridge mode (in fact I'm fairly sure one of you network hero's ...Furry Nutz / BigDave pointed me towards some time back) .... but everytime I do it......10 second reset / 30 second power off / re-power up.....it still refuses to find 192.168.1.1
If I swap out the main EA9600 router and put the EA6500 in place, I can get the dchp switched down, the IP address changed and bridge mode set. But If I just connect it to a laptop and reset/poweron/off, the laptop network dialog box just keeps going through a re-boot sequence. I tried a second laptop in case there was something odd on mine....same thing.
Any ideas why the EA6500 won't play well directly connected to the laptop RJ45?
Thanks for the support as always guys

  • EA6500 NAT Redirection Bug???

I have a pair EA4500s that I am swapping out for a pair of EA6500s.  One EA6500 is a router.  The 2nd EA6500 is set as a bridge and us being used as an Access Point about 200ft and two floors above the main EA6500 router.  The two units are connected via DECA (200MB Ethernet over DirecTV cable - an alternative for others with a cable provider is called MOCA).  So, basically two EA6500s serving as two Access Points on opposite sides of the house and all wireless networks on different channels but all sharing the same SSID.  Everything works GREAT except for one unusual issue.
The issue is with wired or wireless clients.  If I try to use my PUBLIC address with port number to address a local client on the local network inside the NAT network the NAT redirection fails.  In other words if I use 172.16.16.8 for a local web cam while inside my network from an iPhone or PC all works great.  If I use the external public address, however, the connection times out.  If I pop out the EA6500 doing the routing/NAt and swap it with the old EA4500 with basically the same config as the EA6500 everything works again.  The EA6500 and the EA4500 are configured identical for the most part and with the EA4500 as the main router NAT redirection works great but with the EA6500 NAT redirection fails.  I have the firewall setting to FILTER NAT REDIRECTION unchecked so that's not the problem.
Seems very odd.... and only seems to happen with the EA6500..... the work around is to use the local IP address when the client is on the inside and the public address when on the outside, but what a pain that is....
I think this must be a bug.  Anyone else able to reproduce this issue...  I have not reset the router EA6500 to factory and reconfigured from scratch.  That is my last resort that I'm dragging my feet on.... but no idea if that will solve anything anyway...  just an idea I've not tried yet...
    Thoughts?

Thanks for the comment but unfortunatly I think you may be are responding some other post that has some issue with SSID or WiFi???  Might check that you are responding to the correct post given I'm not aware there was any comment or issue about wireless or SSID or even a 2.4ghs or 5ghz issue here.  My issues are with wired clients but I cna alos reproduce the same issue over WiFi as well.
Unfortunatly, SSID and wireless functionality have nothing to do with this thread or the issue.  This is a NAT REDIRECTION problem that happens on wired clients even if WiFi functionality (guest and regular) is disabled and the 2nd EA6500 is removed completly.  This is a routing or firewall issue I suspect.
In regards to wireless (not a problem in this case), all works fine wiht the same SSID on 2.5Ghz and 5Ghz on two different WiFi devices.  Thanks for the feedback and info but SSID is irrelevant and I regret now even mentioning it in the original post given it has no bearing on this issue.  I was just trying to be complete in my description of the environment.

  • EA6500 Password problem

Got an EA6500. latest firmware. moved it to bridge mode after setup because i just want it to pass DHCP from my Firewall.
Everythign works fine. However i CAN login to the Linksys Smart Portal  but when i click the lower option for local access to ACCESS ROUTER and its asking for my router password. I have changed it since the initial install because noone wants it to be admin HEHEH.
So my question is why cant i login locally because that is where all the features are. the portal does not have options to change anything except adding apps.

Bridging the router will disable all its router capabilities. It will now act as a passthrough and as a plain switch. You should still be able to access the router interface locally though. If you did change the router password then better use that one. Otherwise you will have to reset the router back to admin and set it up again.

Hey, I have just recently replaced my Netgear router with an EA3500 and have it bridged to an Airport Express. From there I have an ethernet cable attached to an AV receiver (Pioneer 1021k), but all to often now with this new router to use any of the features of the receiver ie Airplay, iOS app remote, I must restart the router EVERY time. This is frustrating because the these issues were never present with the netgear router. Any insight would be great.
    Thanks, Terry

So I take it you are using the AE as a repeater bridge using WDS.
I would try using a power line adapter kit instead like a plwk400. It has one port so you can direct connect with Ethernet to your av receiver.......plus it has wireless so you can extend your network.
I used an EA6500 in combination with plwk400 and Apple TV/iphone with AirPlay and AirPlay mirroring last week. Worked fine.

  • EA6500 - hangs every day, must power cycle

I bought a EA6500 a few weeks ago, and so far this has been a terrible experience.
    Physical setup
At home, I have a cable modem working as a bridge. No NATing, just a media conversion from Coax to RJ45 ethernet. Thus the EA6500 has an official IP on it's WAN interface.
    Installation
On my first attempt to install it I had to give up after an hour. The fancy setup program on the CD never found the router, and I had some work to do. Thus, I reconnected my old router to get reconnected to the internet.
Five days ago I finally found the time to give it another go. Once again, the setup program on the CD had a hard time finding the router. When it finally found it, I could never finish the configuration routine. I supplied all the information needed, and the progress bar grew to 60% and then the setup program said it couldn't finish the install. This happened on every attempt. I disabled my antivirus and firewall, but no success. I tried to connect using a cable instead of WLAN - no success. It appears that the Setup program relies on WLAN only to get access to the router.
The first time I got a successful connection between my PC and the EA6500, the router asked me to download and install an updated firmware. This worked OK, even though the config was not 100% successful. Thus I guess the router is running the most current firmware. I can't verify this right now as I am at work.
After a while I tried to access the router's web interface directly without completing the setup program. This way, I was finally able to finish the router config and get access to the internet. During the web config the connection to internet came and went several times.
    Use
After finishing the config, I downloaded the Smart WiFi app to my iPhone 4s and could connect to the router. This seem to work OK when I do have an internet connection. The problem is that the router freezes every day, sometimes 2-3 times a day and all internet connection is lost for my entire home network.
When this happens, all LAN lights kind of dim down without disappearing completely, and the router is nonresponsive. The link light on my cable modem (a bridge, not a router) dies, indicating that the link was lost. I have to use the power switch to turn the router off/on for it to wake up and resume it's work.
More often than not, the router has frozen when noone has used the network. As net use is usually limited to afternoons and evenings, the router is more often than not just idling when it freezes.
The router can not be said to be stressed or working hard. So far I have only used it to surf for news (2 iPads, 2 phones, three PCs) and stream a couple of movies using Netflix. No torrents or other connection intensive programs have been used. No USB-disks are attached.
    What to do?
Can anyone give me a hint as to where I should start looking. I don't have the time for days of diagnostics work. If I can't get the router to work anytime soon I will return it and my more than 10 year long Linksys relationship is most likely over. Trust is a  fresh commodity, and my trust in Linksys is about to pass it's best before date due to several bad experiences the last year...

I believe your router is acting that way because the initial installation was not successful. I've had the same issue having a modem-router connected with my Linksys router. It is possible that even if your modem-router is already set to bridge mode, it is still using a Private IP (which is the WAN IP of the router). If the modem-router is using a Private IP, it will cause a conflict with the Private IP Address of the Linksys router. I would suggest you reset the router to factory defaults and reconfigure it manually by accessing the router page.
You check this link. You will need to agree and continue with an open network before you can open the Router password page.
If you have wireless dropping connection in your network, I suggest you check this link.
    Hope this helps!
