EA6500 channel width in auto

My EA6500 is set to auto, not a lot of neighborhood wifi interference because I live in a rural area.  My router is normally on channel 6, but it will autochange to 6 plus 11 sometimes according to inSSIDer, and then change back to only channel 6. Anyone know why? As far as I can tell it doesn't change the performance of my network inSSIDer says "maxrate" is 450 either way. I don't know how long it stays wide since I only check it randomly during when I am checking things out.

If your router is switching to use 2 channels, that means that it is using a 40MHz. channel width (one channel plus an extension channel). If you want it to not to do that, set the channel width to 20MHz. If you want it to always use 2 channels, then switch the channel width to 40MHz. If you want the router to figure it out, set it auto *smile*.
Generally speaking, if you have and neighboring wireless networks, using a 20MHz. only channel wiidth will be more stable, and provide better overall throughput as well. You may have problems if your router is set to auto or 40MHz. channel width, since it will try 40MHz. channel width, and if it sees neighboring wireless networks that may cause it to drop back to 20MHz. But it will generally keep trying 40MHz. channel width and dropping back to 20MHz. if its algorithms tell it to do that. This can result in unstable behavior, although it doesn't sound like it's affecting you that way, probably because the neighboring wireless networks aren't that strong for you. I have enough neighboring wireless networks here that I always need to set my 2.4GHz. channel width to 20MHz. to get the best performance (and give my neighbors a break).

  • Unable to set 5ghz 80 mhz channel width on EA6500

    Hi
My desktop pc has an Asus PCE-AC 66 PCI card (supports up to 1300 mbps wifi) and is only 5m or so away from the the EA6500 router without any obstructions - yet i cannot connect at 1300 mbps AC wifi. On the EA6500 router, i have selected 'mixed' as network mode under 5ghz (since i have some other devices which connect on wifi N on 5ghz) but if i select channel width as 80mhz, i have issues connecting to the 5ghz network on the desktop pc. The desktop briefly connects and under status it says lan speed as 1.3gbps but then it disconnects and i can't connect again. If i select channel width as 'auto' then no problems, the desktop can connect but lan speeds are only 400-600 mbps. Any idea why i cannot connect at 1300 mbps? I suspect i may connect at 1300 mbps if i choose network mode as 'AC' but then my other wifi N devices on 5ghz won't be able to connect.
    Cheers

    Hi!
Is your EA6500 running on the classic firmware? Or have you already upgraded it to the Smart Wifi?
You mentioned that the channel width is at 80 MHz. Was the channel on Auto? You may try other channels & find the best pair for the 80 MHz Channel Width.
Also, check the Asus PCE-AC 66 PCI card wireless properties, whether it's maximized or was just set to N-only. This can be checked by going to Control Panel > Device Manager > Network Adapters > right click on the aforementioned adapter then choose properties > Advanced Tab > check under Properties List & corresponding Value.

  • 802.11ac 5Ghz Connect at 40Mz Channel Width?

MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013
I have a 15" Late 2013 tMBP running Yosemite.  My router is a Buffalo WZR-1750DHPD running dd-wrt from the factory.  Build 23709c for those that are familiar with dd-wrt.  The router is dual band and has the ability to set 20/40/80Mhz channel widths.  No matter what I do, I can get my rMBP to connect at anything other than 20Mz.  To see how I'm connecting I use the Option + wifi icon in the upper right.  As you can see it say 20Mhz.
I have the router set for 40Mhz on the 5Ghz band.  I'm stumped.

Have you tried deleting and reconnecting to the wifi network?

  • Wrt320N channel width question for g & n devices

    Hello guys,
Just bought a new Wrt320N router and I have played around with various settings checking each channel for better signals & etc.  i even adjusted the recommended variables under advanced wireless settings as suggested on this forum.
Current setup is this, currently I have several iphones, wireless macbook, and a ps3(all wireless g devices) and my main computer is a imac with n capabilities along with a soon to arrive linksys WET610N Wireless-N Bridge for the ps3.  I have found that the settings under basic wirelss work best set to:
    mixed
    I named my SSID
    channel width to 20Mhz
    channel on 1
As soon as I select auto which supposedly is better with n devices I lose signal strenght and speed?  Can I leave this setting on 20Mhz even though it recommends auto for setups with n devices?
    Thanks,
    Brandon

Channels are important to understand because they affect the overall capacity of your WLAN. A channel represents a narrow band of radio frequency. Since radio frequency modulates within a band of frequencies, there is a limited amount of bandwidth within any given range to carry data. Therefore it is important that the frequencies do not overlap or else the throughput would be significantly lowered as the network sorts and reassembles the data packets sent over the air.
Each channel is capable of carrying the maximum throughput for its standard.Try changing your wireless router's channel through your router's configuration page to see if your signal strength improves. You don't need to change your computer's configuration, because it'll automatically detect the new channel.
When you keep the Radio Band as Standard Channel 20MHz...Try changing the Standard Channel to 6,9 or 11 and check the through output. Also,If all your wireless devices are of N standard then, under the Advance Wireless Settings,Change the N Transmission rate to 15-130Mbps.

  • EA2700: Unable to set channel width setting for 5Ghz

    Hi,
I am trying to set 40MHz as the channel width for 5GHz network on my Linksys EA2700 and it always remains in "auto"! Am running the latesting firmware. Also i tried factory reset->Restore and set again.
No luck! any suggestions? Did it work for anybody?
    Thank you

Thanks for the info. My 5GHz is set in 'N' only mode. When I set the channel to 161 it displays 40GHz however the speed drops to 30Mbps after a minutes.
    How was your experience?

  • WLAN API is misreporting 802.11ac channel widths

I'm working with a high density Aruba Networks wifi deployment. To avoid co-channel interference, I've dialed my channel widths back to 20MHz only. I've confirmed the config with the vendor and written up the results of what I've found on my blog (if you want better detail) http://wi-infi.blogspot.com. I'm connecting to an Aruba 225 access point and getting an 802.11ac connection on channel 149, but the wifi tools on the mac are reporting the channel width at 40MHz.
    I'm using a late 2013 MacBook Pro Retina 13 with OSX 10.10.2.
An option click on the wifi icon shows Channel 149 (5 GHz, 40 Mhz), PHY mode is 802.11ac, and an airport -I command lists the same with a lastTXRate of 174 and an MCS of 8.
I do know that the beacon frame from the AP reports 20MHz only, but it is still also reporting a secondary channel above the first. I don't think it's supposed to do this as it is unused, but it may still be there because VHT is still enabled on the 20MHz channels.
This results in a problem because many of the wifi utilities use the CoreWLAN API in OSX to report what they're seeing and it's incorrect.
I also have a suspicion that this may be related, at least loosely, to the problems I'm having with MacBooks having trouble maintaining wifi connectivity.

There are other adapters out there that are 3x3 in which I have tested also. It really depends on the driver to be honest. Even on a 3x3, the card connection speed shows the same as your and that is max I have ever seen. Now the actual througout is a different story.  What your connected at doesn't mean that your throughput is that great. Yeah it's better than 802.11n, but you really need a clean environment and you also have to be close enough to achieve the high rates of AC. Here is a list of AC products for reference:

  • Where is the channel width setting?

I'm trying to optimize my Airport settings for a wide range of devices and learned from this Apple Support Article about "Channel Width."
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4199
It's frustrating to see such references in these articles yet find no corresponding setting in Airport Utility. We have a fourth generation TC and the article was written in Nov, 2011, so they should correspond. Our AU version is 5.5.3 and there are no available updates from within AU or through general Software Update. Could there be a firmware update not available through these channels? I'd appreciate any help solving this little mystery.

    The guide line..
Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points
Is to cover all brands of routers and indeed correspond exactly to what Apple preset their own products.
Apple is biased in certain areas and other manufacturers do allow other settings than Apple recommends. Wireless in some ways is yet an infant technology still ruled by much voodoo and need to offer suitable numbers of chicken livers to the gods of ether.. and even with Apple products where so many controls are hidden or non-existent.. it doesn't always work as it should. We are on the way to wireless nirvana!! IMHO the journey is endless. No sooner will a solution be found to a problem than a new one will crop up. If it works as it generally does.. without wires.. be thankful.

  • WRT160N: Channel Width from 40MHz changes to 20MHz

    Hello,
It's been a long time since my last post... but here I am again.
    I have bought a Linksys WRT160N. I'm running the latest firmware v3.0.03.
I also have an Alienware with a Dell DW1520 (Broadcom chipset).
    My issue is this one.
I set on the router to work at 20 or 40 MHz as Channel Width.
    Check my settings:
And I get this status values on the router:
And this values on the computer:
As you can see, I get 20MHz and not 40MHz... So I don't get on my computer the 300Mbps... and get just 130Mbps.
After a router reboot, I get the correct values of 40MHz.
    Check the router:
    And the DW1520 WiFi card:
Here is a picture of the networks arround my router:
Any ideas what's wrong on the router?
    Thanks for your thoughts.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Nothing is wrong. You have a lot of other networks in your proximity. The router will first try to use 40 MHz bands when requested until it finds that due to interference with all those other routers you'll get a more reliable and faster connection when using only 20 MHz bands. Thus the router reverts back to 20 MHz only.
That's exactly how it should work for best results...

  • WRT160NL B17 channel width issues

Sometimes my storage disapears and I can't see it from my windows machines. When that happens I have to reboot the router and then I can see the storage again.
However, after a reboot, my wireless laptops don't connect automatically. I have to go to the web interface of the router and change the wireless channel width from 20MHz to automatic. Then the laptops connect. So this is issue number one. Issue number two is that this setting doesn't persist. Next time I reboot the channel width goes back to 20MHz.

On the setup page under Wireless tab, click on Advance Wireless Settings tab and Change the Beacon Interval to 50,Change the Fragmentation Threshold to 2304, Change the RTS Threshold to 2304 and Click on "Save Settings"...Also reduce the MTU size to 1400 on the setup page and click on save settings.
Power cycle the router and check the result..If you are still facing the same problem then, try to upgrade/reflash the router's firmware. After upgrading the router's firmware...reset the router and reconfigure the router from scratch.

  • WRT160N with 40 MHz channel width?

Just purchased a WRT160N version 3. I had some connection issues and restricting the router to use 20 MHz channel width only and using channel 11 solved them. The router now works wonderfully.  As soon as I allow the router to use 20 Mhz or 40 Mhz channel width my laptop with Intel 5100AGN wifi loses connection about 3 times a day.  Why is this??  I would like to use 40 MHz as it allows for faster speeds.

I have a new iPhone 4s.  I have a home wi-fi network using Cisco Linksys2000 router with all settings per this article - phone will not see network if set to 5 GHz channel width - solution??  2.4 works but is not optimal with other devices in home (computers; tivo).  Have others seen this?  Any advice is much appreciated.

Stephen Spark is right - your best alternative is to use a simultaneous dual band wireless router like the AirPort Extreme. Your Cisco Linksys2000 is not a dual band router, meaning that it will be constrained to operate at the slowest speed of all the devices on your network.
The AirPort Extreme's dual networks will support all your 802.11n devices as well as all your 802.11b/g devices on both the 2.4 and 5 GHz frequencies simultaneously.

  • Problem Importing with Channel setting in Auto mode

I had the impression that if I chose the "auto" mode on channel selection under Edit-Preferences-Burning - Custom, then Itunes could tell if the recording was mono or stereo and upload accordingly thus saving space for mono recordings. But with "auto" all of my uploads are in stereo - only when I change the setting to Mono will Itunes upload a mono recordng as mono. Was I wrong in my assumption of the Auto setting or is something wrong - I am usung the latest version of Itunes 7 Thanks in advance for any help Jay

Also, I am not using a multi-channel output, only built-in output (stereo). Still, does not seem to work.
Another test -- opened file in Soundtrack Pro. I see the four channels, though they are grouped in some way that I cannot separate at present. I save the file as aiff, and this time Logic will open it, though it seems somehow corrupted, won't play.

  • Can I extend the width of auto-complete beyond form field itself?

I have a form field that has a width of about 30. Often, the information entered is longer than 30 characters.
I use auto complete on my forms option.
Is it possible to extend the drop down of auto-complete-saved information beyond the 30 characters of the form-field itself? Sometimes the first 30 characters of more than one previously entered answer are the same.
The only way to know if I selected the right one is to just guess and then go to end and see if I picked the right one.
    Thanks in advance.

There are a few extensions that allow you to "drag" a '''textarea''' larger than what the web page specifies, but AFAIK those extensions only work with multi line textareas not with '''''single line''''' form textareas.
I have used this extension in the past, but it has been problematic in Firefox 3.6 versions. IIRC it didn't ever work with single line textareas, like in forms. <br />

  • EA6500 slow wireless download

    Hi,
I've tried trick I found in my search, this is my hope for an answer.
I've had my Linksys EA6500 for a half year or so, and for a mouth or 2 ago my internet started being very slow, on the devices on wireless. Almost 0. My internet connection is 60 Mbps, but on 2.4 Ghz my test show 7 Mbps at best, most of the time 2 Mbps. 5 Ghz is a little better at 15 Mbps to 20 Mbps, and thats okey, but not as good as 60 Mbps. Cabled, the speed is 60 Mbps every time. I have now bought a Gramofon, which can extend the network or create it's own based on wireless or cable. I have connected the cable to Gramofon and created it's own network and i'm getting 35-48 Mbps, and thats a speed i can live with.
The router has the newest firmware, I have reset the router and media prioritization is set to off as that is what everyone says works.
Do you folk have a solution, or could it be a defect in the antennas?

The router and extender have to be on different channels and with at least two channels between them or they will cause radio interference with each other.
Also try setting your Media Prioritization Downstream Bandwidth to 60mbps with WMM Support enabled. Keep all devices and app normal priority to start with.
Set Wireless security "AN Only" or "Mixed", WPA2 Personal (not mixed) and Channel Width to "Auto".
Please remember to Kudo those that help you.
