EA6500 - External HFS+ formatted Drive causes Router to become unstable

Hi All,
I am running the most recent firmware 1.1.28 released on Jan 2nd(ish) 2013 and if I try and access or configure my external Segate Freeagent 1.5 GB it essentially crashes my router whereby I cannot reach the internet nor the Admin console. I have to power cycle to be able to connect.
Does anyone have any fix suggestions?
Thanks!

The hard drive should work fine because it is on the list of tested HDD for this router. It is too early to say the router is defective. What you can try is to backup the drive and do the reformat procedure again. There is a possibility that the reformat procedure was not properly done the first time. Use the same HFS+ format. If that would not help solve the issue, try formatting the drive to NTFS and see the difference. If nothing would work, you might need to reformat the drive that way you had it when it was working.

  • Are HFS+ formatted drives compatible with VISTA?

Can't get my USB HD to work wireless via Airport Extreme Base Station 802.11n.
Apple manual says USB HD needs FAT32 format to work with VISTA. Found freeware to accomplish this-- http://www.ridgecrop.demon.co.uk/index.htm?fat32format.htm
and successfully formatted the 500GB HD to FAT32 in a single partition--
BUT, the setup still did NOT work correctly. I could now see the drive from within VISTA, but my test write/save to the USB HD wirelessly via AEX failed-- Microsoft Word froze. Test of Microsoft Word file COPIED from laptop's HD to USB HD via AEX appeared to work. But when COPIED file opened, Word program froze again.
Then today I read the following on Wikipedia: "On Windows, a fairly complete filesystem driver for HFS+ exists as a commercial software package called MacDrive. This package allows Windows users to read and write HFS+ formatted drives, and read Mac format optical disks. [9]
A free alternative to MacDrive is HFSExplorer [1] written by Erik Larsson. HFSExplorer is a useful application for viewing and extracting files from an HFS+ volume (Mac OS Extended) or an HFSX volume (Mac OS Extended, Case-sensitive) located either on a physical disk, on a .dmg disk image, or in a raw file system dump."
Wow, imagine my surprise, given that Apple says to format FAT32. If the Wikipedia info is correct, forget FAT32 and its limit of 4GB file size. HSF+ would be a much better format than FAT32 if it's truly compatible. Does anyone have any knowledge or experience on this issue? I really want to be able to backup wirelessly from VISTA and via my AEX, which I otherwise love! Thanks for any help on the issue.

I have been at it today as well
HFS is the better compatible format for VISTA. You can drag the files, but there is no way of having a software backit up for you. The drive will show up As Network Drive and i have been trying for the past 5 hours to figure out how to make it possible. After numerous attempts i gaave up.
So i came down to dragging and dropping the files i want to back up instead.
    Good luck

  • Can I copy files from an external NTFS formatted drive to my Mac?

My PC laptop died and I have two external NTFS formatted hard drives. I also have a desktop Mac.
I searched and came across another post dated Sept 2005 in the Support Forum that asked this similar quesiton I post. Sorry if i appear to sound repetitive but I really need  confirmation to the answer for reason stated below.
The answer given then was as follows, "Max OSX can only read files on an NTFS formatted external hard drive -- it cannot write files to such a drive [OK, that is clear to me]. If you copy a file from an NTFS formatted hard drive to the internal hard drive of your Mac, there are absolutely no restrictions on what you can do to that copy of the file."
So, to me this means I can modify the JPEG file in my Mac using Photoshop, right? No reformatting of the NTFS drive is necessary? If so, please let me know ASAP as i have a deadline to return the brand new PC which I purchassed thinking that that was my solution.
I pose this question to this forum because the original post is 8 years old and wonder if OS compatibility issues remain the same.

If you want to modify the JPEGs you have on the NTFS external disk, you will have to copy the images to your Mac hard disk before editing them.
If you want to edit files on a NTFS external disk, you have to install a third-party application as Paragon NTFS

  • External USB Hard Drive causes menu problem - menu items flash

    Greetings:
I have a external USB hard drive (250 GB) that is partitioned into 3 hard drives. Two hard drives are formatted in MacOS standard and one is formatted in MacOS extended. I had to reformat the last drive in MacOS extended because the Macbook would not let me edit files on the drive.
The problem is that when I connect to the drives, the menu malfunctions (I cannot see the date and time and the menu items flash). Dismounting the drives solves the problem.
Do I need to reformat the hard drives? Or do I need a new USB drive?
    Thank you.
    EA

Hmm, someone else had a similar problem.  Note the ":: Loading root filesystem module...-e" line.  That "-e" shouldn't be there.  It should be, instead, the module for the filesystem.
As a workaround for right now, you can add your filesystem module to the MODULES array, and remove the "filesystems" hook.
In that case, you'll probably want rootdelay=* to allow the drive some time to settle, and rootfstype=* to speed up filesystem detection while in kinit.
By the way, what filesystem do you have on that machine?  Can you tell me what
    /usr/lib/klibc/bin/fstype < /dev/sda1
outputs on a running system (you may need to be root, or add yourself to the "disk" group or something similar) - /dev/sda1 should be replaced if the usb drive is not sda1

  • Attaching USB drive causes EX4 to become unresponsive.

Hello, I have tried to setup a usb to nas backup a few times and keep having the same problem. Upon attaching the 4TB usb drive (usb 3.0) to the back of the EX4 the NAS becomes unresponsive. I can no longer access it from the dashboard or the my cloud app on a mobile device. The app says it is offline. The ex4 is on but no drives are spinning. The usb drive is spinning however.
Once, I was able to see the EX4 and the attached USB drive in my file explorer. It showed the USB drive as a share. It said something like "Share 2_1." However the internal folders were not visible. Then the EX4 froze and went unresponsive - which caused me to try and manually shut it down. It did not power down and after making sure no data was being transferred I had to pull the power (as recommended on this forum).
Once I was able to get as far as setup up a USB to NAS backup on the dashboard. I set up the source and destination folders, etc. upon saving the job the EX4 is inaccessible, while the USB drive spins.
What's going on? Is it taking a long time to index the attached drive? Is it not compatible with the USB drive (seagate 4tb external NTFS USB 3.0)?
Any insight or advice would be great. Thanks!

By default the EX4 will scan the attached USB share for media.  This process takes all the CPU of the EX4 for long periods of time, and can also lead tot he creation of numerous metadata directories in your attached drive.  You should turn this off. In addition, if you use the USB drive for backups, the DEFAULT option for the EX4 is to commence backups when the drive is connected.  This setting can be turned off in the GUI setup for the backup jobs. In addiiton, in my experience, NTFS drives take more overhead than EXT formatted drives.

  • Seagate Backup Plus 3 HFS  formatted drive when plugged in to new Airport Extreme causes it to shut off and shows constant amber light.  Please help.

I just purchased a new 3tb Seagate Backup Plus 3 to attach to my new Airport Extreme.  When I plug the Seagate's USB in to the AE, the drive starts spinning, clicks and then the AE light turns amber and the wifi connection is lost.  After I unplug the HDD the signal comes back and the AE light turns green.  I have even tried using 3 partitions on the drive to see if that would work.  I have a 1tb portable drive that has worked on the AE but this new drive doesn't.  I have formatted both drives with Macdrive 9 pro and only the portable drive has worked.  I've tried everything I could find on the internet to resolve this.  I hope someone out there can help.

When it blinks amber, use the airport utility to peek at the status to see what error it's telling you. I'm guessing you MAY need to use a powered hub...

  • Sparse Bundle Images on external NTFS formatted drive

I'm currently in the process of re-arranging my own backup setup following on from my recent update to Snow Leopard. For this purpose i have the lend of a NTFS formatted external drive and used a large Sparse bundle disk image.
Under 10.5.7 with the latest MacFuse and and unknown version of NTFS-3G i had no problem using the sparse bundle images, they mounted, I could read and write, and the images where only unmounted when I explicitly ejected them.
Under 10.6 with the latest MacFuse and the latest NTFS-3G i have a very strange behavior.
Read and write works fine on the NTFS drive, as do regular disk images and old style sparse disk images.
However sparse bundle disk images will mount and then immediately dismount again. I have no problems mounting the sparse bundle images from HFS+ drives or when using the NTFS drive read only using apples drivers instead of MacFuser+NTFS3G.
The disk image dose not see the be the source of the problem; as any sparse bundle that opens fine on a HFS+ drive exhibits the behavior when moved onto the NTFS drive. Moving the image back onto a HFS+ drive allows the image to be mounted.
The problem is that I require to move some additional files onto the NTFS drive so I can reformat my backup drive
As a side note mounting using "hdiutil attach -readonly" seems to partially resolve the issue; the image will mount and stays mounted but it is read only.

I too am having this issue. Intel / 10.5.8 attached to an SMB share from Ubuntu Linux.
I ran a test of various image types, and while Sparse Image works, Sparse Bundle fails. Here are my logs. Happy to do some testing and log posting if anyone has a test theory to try.

  • Large file problems with an external FAT32 formatted drive (solutions???)

I have an external hard drive that was from my PC and formatted as NTFS so it was read only on my Mac. I formatted it to FAT32 so that I could read/write to it from both my Mac and PC.
Now, because it is formatted FAT32, I can only have a 4GB max file which has proved to be a pain to me. Is there not a format that satisfies both platform with unrestricted file sizes?
    Thanks in advance.

Well, the answer is: not easily.
NTFS, EXT2, and Mac HFS can all be read and written by Windows, Mac OS X and Linux, with appropriate software. You should probably settle on what you are going to use most, and use that as your preferred filesystem.
For example, if you were going to use the Mac mostly to deal with the disk, format the disk using HFS+. On Windows, buy MacDrive and install it to read/write the Mac-format disk. If you are going to use Windows most of the time, then install MacFUSE and NTFS-3g on your Mac (http://code.google.com/p/macfuse/). et cetera.
There's nothing in the way of a really good cross-platform filesystem. ZFS may eventually become that (one might hope), but that's still not quite there.

  • External USB & Firewire drives causing system to stall

    Hi there,
I have zapped the PRAM and reset the system controller.
I have two external hard drives, one USB and one Firewire, connected directly to the computer. I run into the frequent problem where either (or both) of the hard drives are keeping the computer from switching users, although they do seem to allow the computer to fully boot. However, if I try to change users, it will not allow me to get to the login screen without shutting the hard drive off. We also run into problems where the hard drives stall the system... just causes the whole computer to lock up. Any ideas?
    Thanks!

  • External Mac-formatted drive goes blank when internal

Okay so, I have an External drive that sat in a USB enclosure until the USB connection snapped off on the inside. I figured I'd remove the (SATA) drive and re-purpose it as an internal drive. When I did this, it shows up as unreadable. The drive itself shows up in disk utility apps, but the two partitions (one was a Time Machine backup, the other a regular Mac-formatted (Extended) partition, do not. I get the ol' "This drive cannot be read. Initialize?" message when the machine boots up. Any idea how I can get back to the data I know is on there? Am I gonna have to do a RESTORE to another drive?

What brand of drive and what enclosure? If it's a brand name external from, for example, WD or Hitachi (Touro), the drive may have been "specially" formatted for the enclosure. If that's the case, you will need to reformat, probably.
You are generally better off buying a decent enclosure and installing your drive of choice in it yourself.

  • WRT1900AC: Port Forwarding causes router to become unresponsive.

    Hi all,
I'm having an issue with my WRT1900AC router when port forwarding. I've talked to tech support about it, but I want to know if people in the community are experiencing the same thing and maybe conduct a small experiment.
Basically, the problem is that I'm trying to forward the ports for Xbox Live, and after doing so, the router becomes completely unresponsive: wired internet connection cuts off, wireless cuts off, and the router can no longer be accessed via the browser. Switching off the power off for 30 seconds, and then back on has no effect. All of the lights are on and stable, but nothing is working. The only way to get access back to the router and to make it work again is to reset using the button on the back. Support put me throught all the troubleshooting steps (firmware, reset, and the works) but it didnt have any effect.
The thing is, this happens 100% of the time I try to forward the ports, and even after exchanging the router from the retailer it STILL becomes unresponsive after port forwarding. Even better, is that one of my friends also has the exact same issue, and he bought his around the same time as me (beginning of July)
So I would like to know if others are experiencing this as well? The ports I'm trying to forward are below, can anyone else try them out and see if it works?
    Port 88 (UDP)
    Port 3074 (UDP and TCP)
    Port 53 (UDP and TCP)
    Port 80 (TCP)
    Port 500 (UDP)
    UDP Port 3544 (UDP)
    UDP Port 4500 (UDP)
    Thanks,
    Jitin
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I turned off UPNP and tried to port forward and got the same results. Had to reset the router and setup the wifi and network all over yet again.
I occasionally still get NAT problems with UPNP enabled, hence why I want to port forward. Appreciate you trying to help!

  • External HFS encrypted password change & Drive mounting in Disk Utility without password

    I have two questions:
    1. I have an external HFS encyrpted drive that was encrypted via Mavericks Disk Utility. I have the password for it in 1password but I cannot cut and paste it when it attempts to mount. It is a very long password and it would not be practical to type it manually. It seems that Apple does not permit pasting such passwords (I have also tried to copy the password to a sticky note and then into the drive mount password prompt with no results, thus it is not unique to 1Password). At any rate, to remedy this situation, I would like to change the password to something smaller and memorizable (which is very very unfortunate as I find this a gaping security issue for who, in their right mind will manualy type in a 60 character password every time?). I have not been able to locate a method to change this external drive's password. Any assistance would be greatly apprecaiated.
    2. Alarmingly, I AM able to mount the drive WITHOUT entry of the password if I do a verify disk and repair disk. This is horrifying. This means that without any password someone can mount the drive just by running these utilities.
    Thanks in advance.

You wrote: "It's definitely formatted for windows...I have Disk Warrior, but it doesn't see my drive "DiskWarrior only works on disks in Mac OS formats, e.g. "Mac OS Extended" (aka HFS Plus or HFS+), "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)." It won't fix disks in MS-DOS/FAT32 format.
There are PC-specific disk utilities, akin to DiskWarrior for Mac, so if you have a PC as well, a PC disk utility might help repair the directory corruption if run from a PC.
External drives, whether they're formatted for PCs or Macs, can be subject to the same causes of directory corruption discussed in See my "Data corruption and loss: causes and avoidance" FAQ. Some of those causes have nothing to do with hardware failure and many are preventable.

  • Using a FAT32-formatted drive as backup disk with Time Machine

For strange and perverse reasons of my own, I'd like to use a FAT32-formatted external hard drive with Time Machine. Is this possible?

No, Time Machine needs a HFS+ formatted drive for its backup folder:
Mac OS Extended or Mac OS Extended Journaled.
_A solution_ if you still want to use the same drive for TM backup and for some Windows files:
Partition the drive before you start using it.
    1) Format it (using Disk Utility) as Mac OS Extended
    2) Make two partitions.
    3) Now you can format Partition2 as FAT32, so you have then two different volumes with each its own format.

  • External Drive HFS+ format Crash?

    Hi,
I'm had an external harddrive formatted as HFS+ for the mac.
Yesterday I was trying to zip up an huge folder, which failed with a zip error, but created a zip file, which i tried to drag it to the trash. When I did that my computer when on a wait state - the spinning cursor - and i did not get any reponse from my iMac.
Mistake - I just powerdown my external drive, I got the external harddrive disconnected warning - in a moment i got back my cursor, then i rebooted the mac also.
Now when I'm trying to connect my external hard drive, nothing happens, i don't get any errors and my external hard drive does not mount, when i go to the diskutil i could not even see the hard drive.
I may have crashed, i've lot of data on it - it was my backup store - is there a way to restore it

Hopefully. First inplugg the external and try resetting the SMC: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303446
Next try resetting the P-RAM by holding down the Option/Apple/p/r keys while booting until you hear the boot chime at least 3 times. Afterwards you will need to check your date and time and also make sure your startup is selected in System Preferences/Startup Disk.
If this works once you get your drive mounted open up Disk Utilities and Repair the Disk.

  • Airport Extreme external hdd causes router to reboot

When I try to access my external WD hard drive (formatted to FAT32) on my AirPort Extreme, it freezes and causes the router to reboot. How do I fix this?
I am accessing the hdd from windows 7 pc.

Try adding a powered USB hub....even if the WD drive has its own power supply.
Reason...the USB port is borderline as far as its ability to supply sufficient power for a hard drive even when the Extreme is new and even when the drive has its own power supply.
If the Extreme is a few years old, it is not delivering as much power to the USB port as it once did, and it needs some help.
Worst case, the internal power supply on the Extreme is starting to head South. That is usually not an issue until the device is 4-5 years old.
