EA6500 - hangs every day, must power cycle

I bought a EA6500 a few weeks ago, and so far this has been a terrible experience.
Physical setup
At home, I have a cable modem working as a bridge. No NATing, just a media conversion from Coax to RJ45 ethernet. Thus the EA6500 has an official IP on it's WAN interface.
Installation
On my first attempt to install it I had to give up after an hour. The fancy setup program on the CD never found the router, and I had some work to do. Thus, I reconnected my old router to get reconnected to the internet.
Five days ago I finally found the time to give it another go. Once again, the setup program on the CD had a hard time finding the router. When it finally found it, I could never finish the configuration routine. I supplied all the information needed, and the progress bar grew to 60% and then the setup program said it couldn't finish the install. This happened on every attempt. I disabled my antivirus and firewall, but no success. I tried to connect using a cable instead of WLAN - no success. It appears that the Setup program relies on WLAN only to get access to the router.
The first time I got a successful connection between my PC and the EA6500, the router asked me to download and install an updated firmware. This worked OK, even though the config was not 100% successful. Thus I guess the router is running the most current firmware. I can't verify this right now as I am at work.
After a while I tried to access the router's web interface directly without completing the setup program. This way, I was finally able to finish the router config and get access to the internet. During the web config the connection to internet came and went several times.
Use
After finishing the config, I downloaded the Smart WiFi app to my iPhone 4s and could connect to the router. This seem to work OK when I do have an internet connection. The problem is that the router freezes every day, sometimes 2-3 times a day and all internet connection is lost for my entire home network.
When this happens, all LAN lights kind of dim down without disappearing completely, and the router is nonresponsive. The link light on my cable modem (a bridge, not a router) dies, indicating that the link was lost. I have to use the power switch to turn the router off/on for it to wake up and resume it's work.
More often than not, the router has frozen when noone has used the network. As net use is usually limited to afternoons and evenings, the router is more often than not just idling when it freezes.
The router can not be said to be stressed or working hard. So far I have only used it to surf for news (2 iPads, 2 phones, three PCs) and stream a couple of movies using Netflix. No torrents or other connection intensive programs have been used. No USB-disks are attached.
What to do?
Can anyone give me a hint as to where I should start looking. I don't have the time for days of diagnostics work. If I can't get the router to work anytime soon I will return it and my more than 10 year long Linksys relationship is most likely over. Trust is a  fresh commodity, and my trust in Linksys is about to pass it's best before date due to several bad experiences the last year...

I believe your router is acting that way because the initial installation was not successful. I've had the same issue having a modem-router connected with my Linksys router. It is possible that even if your modem-router is already set to bridge mode, it is still using a Private IP (which is the WAN IP of the router). If the modem-router is using a Private IP, it will cause a conflict with the Private IP Address of the Linksys router. I would suggest you reset the router to factory defaults and reconfigure it manually by accessing the router page.
You check this link. You will need to agree and continue with an open network before you can open the Router password page.
If you have wireless dropping connection in your network, I suggest you check this link.
Hope this helps!

    Hi kelori617,
If you are having issues organizing the Apps on your iPhone via iTunes, you may want to double-check the steps in the following article and make sure you are syncing any changes to your device:
iTunes 11 for Mac: Sync and organize iOS apps
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH12115
iTunes 11 for Windows: Sync and organize iOS apps
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH12315
If all of the steps are correct and the changes still aren't being retained when you restart your iPhone, you may want to make sure your data is backed up, then try restoring your iPhone to factory settings, restore your data from the backup, then test to see if you can organize your apps via iTunes:
Use iTunes to restore your iOS device to factory settings

iPhoto just stopped working. It loads pictures, but then goes into rainbow wheel forever. Then I try to force quit it, and then the whole Mac hangs up (had to power cycle it to get it back). I am using OS 10.5.8, and when I run software update, it assures me I have up to date software. I have not added any photos since the last time I used it, probably less than a month ago. What gives?

Try these in order - from best option on down...
    1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
    2. Download <a href="http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/"><b><u>iPhoto Library Manager</b></u></a> and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new *iPhoto 6* library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Rolls and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Roll Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

Does your default route direct to next hop IP or to the interface?  If the latter, ARP table can fill causing issues.  So also if the latter, change to the former.

  • WRT54G, Firmware Version: 8.00.2, Stops routing after a day, Requires Power Cycle to Work Properly

WRT54G, Firmware Version: 8.00.2, Stops routing after a day, requires a quick 10-15 second power cyc... work properly for a day or so before powering down again….
I was using for years the BEFW11S4 Model without any issues before it finally failed. Due to loyalty, I went out over a month ago to purchase the current model. The problems did not pop-up until month of December… The issue had me thinking at first was the internet connection…
Any advice on dealing with this issue… Is it a Software and/or Hardware? It appears to be a software related condition…
For those other WRT54G users that appear to be having similar issues, regardless of the firmware, it would appear we all seem to be facing the same condition of resolving the issue after a power cycle…
Is there anyone out there that has already resolved this issue (e.g. Configuration changes)? Does anyone have input that Linksys is actively working on this issue?
Although I am sure we will find a solution, having to cycle the power is a bit disappointing since my older model had no such flaws with my current internet connection…
Thanks for the support out there….

If you have an Intel wireless card you can try this.  I came across this link on the forum a days ago and it seems to help.  The problem is that my problem was much more intermittent than some people are experiencing.  It mainly seemed to appear when undocked the computer or if there was a power outage during the day.  I would be interested to see if it works for you or if I'm just chasing my tail.  I've seen other suggestions for changing the thresholds in the router which may be related.

  • Why does my system hang and require a power-cycle?

My macbook air just stops. The trackpad, mouse, keyboard are all inoperable. The cursor does not change to the "I am busy color wheel". We have reset the SMC controller once on a suggestion from Apple support. This happens regularly and we are getting REALLY aggravated at the lost time and data.

Not so. You use the recovery mode to reinstall Lion. Details in Recovery and About OS X Recovery. Also, see Computers using Internet Recovery.

  • Outlook and owa freezes every day, sometimes at the same time

    Hello,
I have very strange problem! 2 users complain that the outlook hangs every day, approximately at the same time. But other 200 users work fine. I can't see any error on the mail servers ( two servers exchange 2010 sp 3 with dag) Outlook can hangs for 15 min
with user, who has mailbox 1,5 Gb and about 3-5 min with user, who has mailbox 150 Mb.
When outlook hangs, owa logon also hangs and then they start working simultaneously.
It doesn't depend on the server where I try to run owa. I tried to move mailbox to new database, but it didn't resolve my problem.
There are no any scheduled tasks on exchange servers at this time. No performans issues. Maybe some problems of connectivity with AD, but I don't see any suspicious event.

    Hi,
It sounds like mailbox curroption. I'd suggest you move those two mailboxes to another mailbox database, and then try againt to see if this works.

  • TC7.3.0 codec fails after reset and power cycle - failed: dns lookup failed (CUCM registered)

Have a couple of codec's in the lab here that will work sometimes, and sometimes won't. They're running the latest 7.3.0 code and registering to CUCM 10.5.1SU1.  I've tried factory resetting them and get the same result.  I've manually configured the CUCM provisioning address in the system, and it immediately pulls down the correct SIP URI.  Sometimes power cycling the unit will allow it to register.  I have DNS running in this lab, A records created for all relevant hosts.
    Anybody seen this before?

This was for two C20's.  I think I found the issue. About 1 out of every 3 reset/power cycles they would work the rest they would not.
Basically, I was using DHCP to assign IP, but manually assigning DNS.  You are able to do this on most machines, but the way the Codec handles this is different. It simply appends your manual DNS configuration, including the DNS domain, to the list obtained from DHCP.  In a packet capture I was able to see where it would query all 3 DNS servers (1 manual 2 from DHCP) and it would query based on my manual domain and the DHCP domain.  It appears to round-robin the response it uses, as all DNS servers responded in one fashion or another, it just picked one to listen to.  In this manner, it had about a 33% chance of picking the correct response.
After statically assigning the IP address, the problem went away as the only DNS server was the one manually assigned.
I take this all with a grain of salt though, as our internal team is using the TC7.2.1 code and they get the DNS issue every once in a while regardless of the DHCP/DNS configuration.  There may be more to this, but I can say with certainty that using DHCP and manual DNS configuration at the same time is not recommended.

  • 27" imac yosemite update hangs. Required power cycle and safe boot to get the update going. Now all OS X update do the same.

    27" iMac Yosemite update hangs.
The original upgrade to Yosemite (10.10) took almost a full day! The computer hung during one of the reboots and just showed a blank grey screen, no apple logo, no progress bar, nothing. I left it like that for about an hour thinking it might be working in the dark... Eventually I had to power cycle. Disconnected power at the wall outlet for about 5 minutes, then reconnected and tried to start. After about 20 minutes, got to the same point, grey screen:no action, again waited at least an hour.
Then I did a safe boot. System came up OK in safe mode to the log in screen. As soon as I logged in, it proceeded with the interrupted update, which ran to completion. Yay!
Now, every update to Yosemite that arrives gives men the same grief!
To add some more, the "Pro Video Formats 2.0.1" update has installed about 4 times, and is asking to be installed again? There's no indication that it fails the update so whats going on?

I saw the set hibernet mode to 0 trick and it failed.  Guess I can try 3 because reinstalling OS X did nothing but cost me another few hours and a little faith in Apple.  Getting annoyed as I see how many people complain of the identical issue and the fixes are variable and random.  Suggests to me that it is a major design flaw in the hardware and Apple got too cute with the just works idea and didn't put a damned power button on the display so there is no manual way to do it and no 'insert a pin here' type trick to reset the thing.
Asking for a refund tomorrow.  Past the 14 days so maybe they'll say no but if so then every time this happens I will swap it out.  At least then I know it is a three hour fix and as I was working on this for hours today it occurred to me that if the trick is to do 57 different things and maybe one will work then that is not why I made the switch to Apple.  I could plug everything in on my PC and it all 'just worked'.
Really poor customer service - the support folks are very nice and I am sure they know that this is a systemic issue but aren't allowed to say so.  Feeling pretty stupid for going on faith right about now.

  • WRT160NL hangs every other day

Doing a google search, and searching this forum, apparently every other day hangs are not that unusual for Linksys products.
In any case, repeated hangs have been a problem since I installed my WRT160NL about 3 weeks ago. I'm trying to decide if I should just return it to the store, or keep futzing with it.
I have already reset the router and reconfigured it - made no difrerence. I'm running Firmware Version: 1.00.01 B15, which isn't the latest - an upgrade is the final thing to try. I have tracked the hangs over the last 7 days, and found the unusual pattern of a hang every 2 days, about 36-48 hours apart. This must mean something, but I can't figure out what.
MY QUESTION... Apparently the log on this router completely disapears every time its booted - it might help if there was some way to see if there is a common event before the hang. Any suggestions of how to preserve the log?
Any other suggestions welcome. Chat support really doesn't know that much about this product - so far that has proven a waste of time.
    thnx,

Try to reflash the router's firmware and reconfigure it....
Go to website linksysbycisco.com/downloads.........insert model no of your router in serach tab......select proper version of your router........download the firmware file......save that file on desktop
Follow these steps to upgrade the firmware on the device : -
Open an Internet Explorer browser page on a computer hard wired to the router...
In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1...Leave the Username blank & in Password use admin in lower case...
Click on the 'Administration' tab- Then click on the 'Firmware Upgrade' sub tab- Here click on 'Browse' and browse the .bin firmware file and click on "Upgrade"...
Wait for few seconds until it shows that "Upgrade is successful"  After the firmware upgrade, click on "Reboot" and you will be returned back to the same page OR it will say "Page cannot be displayed".
    Now reset your router :
Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds...Release the reset button...Unplug the power cable from your router, wait for 30 seconds and re-connect the power cable...Now re-configure your router...

  • Mac server hangs every few days. where to look for cause?

I have a Mac server that hangs every few days and requires a hard reboot.
It is run headless so we have no screen feed back of what is happening when it hangs.
It is possible that just the network communications fail. But it is in software because a reboot restores the situation everytime.
I could use some advice on where to look for possible causes: which logs, or dumps that are produced by the system.
    Thanks

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
    Launch the Console application.
    Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Note the timestamps of the BOOT_TIME log messages, which refer to the times when the system was started. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time when you had the problem. Select the messages logged before the boot, during the time something abnormal was happening. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
For example, if the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down for three minutes before you forced a restart, post the messages timestamped within three minutes before the boot time, not after. Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract—not at the beginning.
If there are long runs of repeated messages, please post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
☞ When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
☞ Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
    Step 2
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ System Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A crash report has a name that begins with the name of the crashed process and ends in ".crash". A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". A shutdown stall report has a name that ends in ".shutdownstall". Select the most recent of each, if any. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot. It's possible that none of these reports exists.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
☞ If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash or panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
☞ Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.

  • WRT54GX2 Power cycles every 75 seconds

I have three wrt54gx2 v.1 wireless routers.  All three in different subnets but basically configured the same way with the exception of the ip addresses.  Two of the routers power cycle about every 75 seconds.  I backed up the configurations (in case a firmware upgrade went bad) and magically the router stopped power cycling.  I upgraded the firmware from v.1.01.14 to v. 1.01.21 not believing that backing up the configurations had anything to do with the problem.  The router rebooted after successfully completing the firmware upgrade and the intermittent power cycling started again at about the same time interval as before the upgrade.  Does this make any sense to anyone?  I've been through the forum and technical support but I can't seem to find anything with exactly the same symptoms.  Any help anyone can be would be appreciated immensely...this thing is driving me crazy.

After a firmware upgrade, you must reset the router to factory defaults, then setup the router again from scratch.  DO NOT use the configuration file that you saved.
The router's configuration file contains the router's initialization data, that is, the data that is read in when the router starts up.  If you have an error in this data, it can potentially cause bizarre router behavior.  This is the reason that you must setup the router again from scratch.
Please let me know whether or not this helped.

  • What's the power of spending more time every day in your IT career ?

What's the power of spending more time every day in your IT career ?
When you do the research to find the factors of the successful people, you'll find that they ALWAYS spent a lot of time every day in their businesses.
The IT technologies change so fast and explode. The performance of IT people with 20 years experiences can be EASILY catched up by a IT people, maybe you, who has only 6 or 7 years or even less if you spend over 80 hours or even more every week on your job and on the latest technologies.
    The reasons are listed below:
    1. The out-of-date IT technologies is no use anymore. It's like the out-of-date IT books. The people with 20 years experience can't rely on his last experience any more.
    2. If you spend 80 hours every week, you'll absorb doubled the knowledge and experience than the people who spends only 40 hours every week. You may catch up with him who has 20 years experiences with your 10 years experiences. Not only this, most of your knowledge and experiences are newer and useful than his.
    3. Because you spend 80 hours, you have plenty of time to focus on your tasks. When the task comes in, you may finish your tasks many times faster than him and you may be the only person who still has the time to do any extra or urgent tasks. Because you have more time, you may prepare your next task to be ready to finish your next task even faster and you may absorb the latest IT technologies from a learner level to an expert level while other people is still doing his tasks. And due to your more spare time to learn the technologies all the time needed to do your task, you have much more knowledge needed to do your task and can finish your task much faster than others.
According to my experience, if the comparison of the knowledge the worker has is 1 to 5, the real hours needed to finish a task may be 1 to 10. In IT field, if you know how to do it, you need minutes, but if you don't know how to do it, you need months to do the error-try or starting to learn it and do it. Please notice that the knowledge can be used for many times and the 1 to 5 and 1 to 10 comparisons will repeat again and again. Without spending more time on getting more knowledge, the comparison of 1 to 10 is still happening.
    4. Like trying to save the money, most of his 40 hours will be spent on his tasks. He may have only 5 hours left to learn new IT technologies. If you still need to spend the same time to finish your tasks like him, you still will have 45 hours to learn new technologies. You grow 9 times, 5 hours to 45 hours, faster than him. If you keep working and learning the new IT technologies 80 hours every week, you'll find that you'll need much less than 35 hours like him, you may have 60 or even more hours every week to do more tasks to get more experiences and to learn more latest technologies.
----- Someone asked me after read the above "You're absolutely right, but, what motivation can make people do that ?". I told him that "Don't ask me. Ask your boss" -----

    1) LabVIEW is a graphical based programming environment and
LabWindows/CVI is a C based programming environment.  Both can be used
for similar tasks.  Users familiar with C may prefer CVI.  LabVIEW is
typically easier to learn if you are unfamiliar with both.
     2)
The Run-Time Engine is a separate component that can be installed to
execute LabWindows/CVI programs and LabVIEW programs.  It is free of
charge for both LabVIEW and LabWindows/CVI.
    3)
LabWindows/CVI does not convert any LabVIEW programs into C code.
LabVIEW programs are already compiled as you write them, so you won't
need to convert them to C to use them.  You should see similar
performance in similar LabVIEW and CVI code.

  • Airport Extreme - Slow until power cycle every few hours (wired, not modem)

I have the latest Airport Extreme Base Station (no time capsule) connected to a Motorola Surfboard 6121 modem.
When wired directly to the AEBS I get download speeds of 90Mbps+, but after a few hours (I haven't determined if it is consistent) the dowloand speed drops to about 1-4Mbps. Power cycling the cable modem brings back the original speeds.
Please Note: When wired directly to the cable modem the speed of 90Mbps+ are consistent over several days (I haven't tested longer).
The drop in speed only happens when connecting through the AEBS, no matter if I'm connected wirelessly or directly.
My next test will be to see whether powercycling only the AEBS resets the speed the way powercylcing the modem does.
Any thoughts? I would rather not have to restart my connection everytime I go to use it.
    Thanks!

The issue happens when I have the following setup:
    MacbookPro (mid-2008) wired directly into:
AEBS (brand new, no time capsule) wired directly into:
    Motorola Surfboard 6121
    or
Samsung BD-5900 Blu-Ray Player (2013) wired directly into:
AEBS (brand new, no time capsule) wired directly into:
    Motorola Surfboard 6121
    or
MacbookPro (mid-2008) and two iPhone 5 devices all wirelessly connected to
AEBS (brand new, no time capsule) wired directly into:
