EA6500 - using other DNS server only applies to Guest network?

I have an EA6500. I use OpenDNS.org as my DNS server to provide additonal filtering. I have added the Guest network option to separate my network access.
When I change DNS server settings on the EA6500 to those for OpenDNS, I've found they only apply to the Guest network. For the 'regular' network, the DNS server provided by Comcast (my cable provider) is used. I have verified this by connecting various devices to both the regular and Guest networks and checking which DNS server is in use.
I assume this is a bug in the firmware? Or am I doing something wrong? Please advise.

You're welcome
Since we're into really in getting this possibly resolve, I suggest you try rolling back the firmware to the classic version then let's see.

  • Install AD Without DNS and use other dns

    hello evrybody
i have dns server for local network + my users + and web site domain
now , i need install active directory .but ad install dns and must set ad dns for all domain users
how to install AD and use my dns server ?

Install AD with DNS on domain controller (better is two DCs) and use public DNS to refer to for public names. Redirect DNS settings on clients to domain controller(s).
DNS that AD is using should contain resource records that allow cliets to find domain controller. As you have not specified your current DNS, it seems more direct procedure to do it in the above way.
REad some info in Technet before you start change of your system to avoid problems.

  • Using company DNS server

I need clarify if my understanding of DNS and Open Directory pertaining to OS X Server, in this case an Xserve still running Panther. I've had DNS and OD running for a couple of years now on an all Mac network(and our IS dept provides only minimal support, no user support...you get the idea). We get DNS from company servers, and I had zone records added to these servers in order to get everything up and running from my end. Now my IS dept is scanning our network for services that don't meet policy. Well my Xserve shows as a running DNS server.
So, finally to my questions. Don't I need the DNS service running on the Xserve for the OD service to function? The IS contact who brought this to my attention seems to think I should be able to turn off my DNS service, since their servers have the forward and reverse lookups.
Years back, after I knew the lookups were on there servers I added the zones to my DNS (thinking I was doing things right). So I have both an A and a PTR record on my server. Do I just remove these, stop the service, and OD will keep on ticking?
    Thanks

"Don't I need the DNS service running on the Xserve for the OD service to function? The IS contact who brought this to my attention seems to think I should be able to turn off my DNS service, since their servers have the forward and reverse lookups."
He's right, you don't need to run DNS in OS X.
You just need to use any DNS with the correct settings for your server IP/name forward and reverse.

  • Osx lion dns server, forward certain domain searches to other dns server

    Hi!
i'm configuring the DNS service in OSX 10.7.1. I want to forward all queries to certain domain (f.e. *.special_domain.com) to certain dns server (f.e. 192.168.0.1 & 2)
i remember in previous OSX Server versions that you can do that in an easy way:
there were a /etc/resolver directory where you can place a text file in order to forward certain domain queries to certain dns server, like this:
    filename: /etc/resolver/special_domain.com
    content of this file:
    nameserver 192.168.0.1
    nameserver 192.168.0.2
now in lion there is no such directory... someone knows how to do that??
    thanks for reading and regards!
    D

i've just read about the "scutil" tool
From the reply of the command "scutil --dns" i understand that is possible and also supported (i guess)
Now i have to discover what files that tool reads, and which is the proper way to modify that
I'll keep investigating tomorrot, now i'm saved by the bell!!

  • 2nd DNS Server- Cause Issues on Main Network?

At work there is already a Windows 2003 Domain controller that serves up DNS and DHCP. I want to try and deploy iCal 2, which requires DNS, Open Directory and a FQDN name for my server.
I already have the DNS name. However, will configuring and running DNS cause any issues on the network with the other computers, which get their DHCP address and DNS requests from the Windows server? I'm not going to deploy DHCP, and thus, I won't be introducing a 'rogue' DHCP server on the LAN. However, I'd like to be sure I'm not going to disturb anything before I proceed.

having your own DNS server is not dangerous unless clients get that address. If you are not running DHCP on the new server your clients will not get that as their DNS.

  • Possible to use Airport Extr and Express for WIRED Guest Network?

    Situation and landscape:
My house has a Comcast cable-modem, which is connected to an Airport Extreme (AEx).
The AEx is running WPA WiFi, and this is all good.
There is one ethernet wire running out of the AEx, which goes 150 feet to the rear of my house, across a short corridor (protected from weather with insulated pipe) and into my garage apartment, where it terminates into an Airport Express (APress.)   This garage apartment is frequently used as part of a rental property.  The APress is extending the same WiFi SSID/settings.
When guests arrive, they are able to plug-in their notebook computers to the APress ethernet port, or use the WiFi.
Well, the problem with that, obviously, is that they can "see" the other computers on the network, and printers, etc.
It would be perfect to set configure the AEx and APress to the WiFi "guest network."  However, there are problems with this:
    1)  Believe it or not, many guests still use direct-plug and do not have nor know how to set up their WiFi -- so they MUST have a direct ethernet wire.
    2)  When I use Airport Utility for the APress, it does not show any WiFi guest network option -- maybe because another dependent setting is not allowing this (i.e. Bridge Mode?")
    3)  The distance between the AEx and this garage apartment is too long between them to shoot a WiFi guest network from AEx and to be picked-up by the Airport Express... and there's a center core in my old house that is impervious to all radio frequencies and could block a nuclear blast.  Well, it causes a degradation of wireless.   And this brings us back to #1 above...in that I need a cable ethernet option.
    Picture attached of current landscape:
    So, maybe....
I've spent the better part of a couple of hours searching here, particularly for the terms "access point" but the terminology isn't what I need.  What I wonder if perhaps I need to place an APress beside the AEx, turn on Guest Network at the AEx, then "pick it up" with a second APress, and carry the ethernet signal to the garage apartment and allow guest WiFi and wired.  (see second picture)   Will this work?

OK, here how to set this up.
Open up AirPort Utility 5.6.1, select the Express, and click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab located below the icons
If you want the Guest Network to have a different SSID (recommended), then change the name of the wireless network, adjust the security settings if needed, and change the Wireless Password and Verify
Click the Internet icon up at the top of the window
Click the Internet Connection tab just below the icons
Change the setting for Connection Sharing to Share a public IP address
Click the DHCP tab located under the icons
Change the DHCP Beginning Address to read something different.....like 10.0.5.2
Click Update and give the Express a full minute to restart
At this point, the Express indicator light will be slowly blinking amber
Open up AirPort Utility again, select the Express and click directly on the word Status (2nd line)
You should see a Double NAT notice with an option to "ignore" the item
There may also be an Setup over WAN notice with an option to "ignore" the item
Click in the boxes to ignore both items, then click Update again and the Express will restart and display a green light
Try things out to verify that the Guest Network cannot "see" any devices on the main network...and vice versa.

  • Wireless only working with guest network?

I've just about gotten a new TC working, but strangely it the wireless only seems to work on the guest network. Have checked the password, and its correct, but still no joy.
I didn't think it was that big a deal, but now I'm wondering if its stopping me seeing old backups when going in to TM, as when I do it only shows me the current situation, and no backups. Which kinda makes sense, as I guess the whole idea of logging in as a guest is that you don't have access to files.
Also - when on the guest network, the TC doesn't show up in AU, presumably for the same reason.
Any ideas what's going on here, assuming the password is correct for the non guest network?
    Thanks.

How about a "new" wrinkle: I can only acquire TC/Airport on the Guest Network, with both a new Mac Book Pro and recent iMac desktop. Plus, Airport Utility will not recognize any wireless device in the house (such as the TC!) Thus, I cannot access any manual settings. Advice or fixes?
Also experiencing slow or limited buffer rates while watching You Tube, etc... Colleague suggested resetting the unit (unplugging router and power and putting laptop in close proximity to TC), and, for an instant, Airport Utility did recognize TC long enough for me to manually set to another channel to avoid interference.
New TC purchased at Best Buy (had coupons!). Time Machine side works fine. Still frustrated that all is not working as it should...

  • Using a proxy server only when connecting to a specifc URL?

In the Mac network settings I see that I can connect through a proxy server and define a list of web sites that I want to bypass the proxy. How can I do the opposite? I want to define a list of URL's that are the only ones sent through the proxy.
I am accessing the URL from within FileMaker Pro, not with a standalone web browser.

I would first search MacUpdate.com to see if there is any utility that already does this.
If find you need to roll your own, you can create a .pac file and specify this via System Preferences -> Network -> Advanced -> Proxy -> Automatic Proxy Configuration
A .pac file is really just a JavaScript function
    function FindProxyForURL(url, host)
Inside the FindProxyURL() function you make a decision on whether to send a URL to the proxy server, or to bypass the proxy server.
OK, so I know that .pac files exist (they are frequently used in a corporate environment), however, I do not know JavaScript, nor how to write a .pac file.
So if no one else chimes in, I suggest you do some Google Searches on writing Proxy .pac files.

  • Use other application server to run Oracle generated web services

    Hi all,
I am currently running an Oracle 9i database and application server (OC4J) and use WebservicesAssembler (JPublisher) to expose PL/SQL packages as web services to an external PDA application.
Is it possible to run the EAR files (the assembled web service) generated in this way on another type of application server? This question because I need to use Resin in a live environment.
If this is not possible, would there be a way to work around it? I mean by manually programming the web service against the PL/SQL package. And if so, has anybody tried that out before?
    Are there other alternatives?
Thanks in advance for your help!
    Regards,
    Stijn Lambert

    Hello,
Which version of OracleAS/Web Service stack are you using?
If you are using a version prior to 10.1.3 the Web Service stack is proprietary and not portable.
JAX-RPC used in 10.1.3 is more portable but you have to be very careful about the way you create your deployment descriptor.
In a general manner you can always create pure JDBC/JPublisher clients and expose them using the Web Service that you want.

  • I use a dns server by which I remotely monitor security cameras. Whilst I can log on to the site I can no longer see the camera output since upgading to FF4. Chrome still works.Think I've tried everything obvious - any ideas ?

Hello, yes it did & still does work on FF3. It also still works in chrome. I have to profess that I'm uncertain what the plug-in does or whether it is correctly spelled ? I can say though that I could also view the cameras through FF3 on kubuntu. Sorry if this is not very helpful.

  • How do you setup a server to use multiple DNS servers that are not connect to each other?

Is there a way to setup a server that connects to two different domains to use the proper DNS server for name resolution?
Let say there are two DCs: serverA.subdomaina.domain.com and serverB.subdoamainb.domain.com.  The domains are independent and not connected.  Now you need a common server that is connected to both and need to resolve names from both
    domains.
    Is this possible?
I have setup a server in a workgroup.  One NIC has the subdomaina.domain.com connection specific suffix and the other nic has the subdomainb.domain.com.  Each NIC has the DNS server listed for the domain it is connected to.
This configuration will resolve FQDNs of one domain but not the other.  This I believe is due to the fact the server only querys one DNS server and doesn't try the other DNS server.
Is there any way to make the server try another DNS server, if the first one doesn't have the entry?

    Hi,
Thank you for posting in Windows Server Forum.
Here adding to the words of “Tim”, a forwarder is a DNS server on a network used to forward DNS queries for external DNS names to DNS servers outside of that network. You can also forward queries according to specific domain names using conditional forwarders.
A DNS server on a network is designated as a forwarder by having the other DNS servers in the network forward the queries they cannot resolve locally to that DNS server. You can refer information regarding forwarders and how to configure from beneath link.

  • How to use DNS server for name resolution for items which don't exist in active directory domain controller DNS

    Dear Experts,
In our office we have a domain controller call it 'Office.com', all computers and corporate servers e.g. exchange, antivirus etc. are member of this 'office.com', it is also having a DNS. All users in office have there preferred DNS set to the corporate
    DNS
We are working for ministry and offering services to them from our data center so have many servers which are for ministry but they are in our data center. For all these servers we created another DNS server which contains all entries for these servers in
forward and reverse lookup zones. In this DNS we also created a forward lookup zone for our corporate servers and zone name is 'office.com'
What we are trying to have is name resolution of all servers which are listed in other DNS build in our office on Win 2008 R2 for ministry servers
If the user change his preferred DNS to ministry DNS he can resolve the ministry server but then we can not control any thing through group policy since they are using other DNS and not the corporate DNS.
How this can be done ? like any group policy applied to corporate domain controller must take effect on users and in addition to this user must also be able to resolve server names in ministry project DNS
    Please assist ASAP.
    regards,

    Hello,
ok so the GPO setting doesn't apply in any case.
Clients machines use the first DNS server in the list of configured ones on the NIC. If that one is available search for additional DNS servers will stop.
What i can not really understand is your description about the second DNS server. This should normally either another DC with AD integrated DNS, so everything is replicatedwithin AD replication or you use a secondary DNS on domain member server that pulls
    the informations from the Master.
It sounds for me that you have configured a machine with DNS server role and created manually the zone with the same name as the domainand manually create there the required A records?

  • DNS server provided by VPN to Mountain lion doesn't work

We are producing proprietary VPN server and client. After upgrade to Mountain lion the DNS stopped working. I noticed that if_index is now in the dns resolver decription when scutil --dns is used for listing. This if_index refers to the physical network interface. So I tried to send public DNS server from our VPN server. It helped because the DNS resolution is done over physical interface. Problem is that we need to use private DNS server, that is the purpose of VPN. The only suspicious piece of code is
    str = SCDynamicStoreKeyCreateNetworkServiceEntity(0, kSCDynamicStoreDomainState, gs_dynamicCache.m_serviceId, kSCEntNetIPv4);
whic copies IPv4 settings from primary IPv4 sesrvice. Can you recommend good article where I would find and understand DNS reolution guidelines for Mountain lion? It is impossible to find something about that if_index. And we are pretty sure that it works correctly on Lion.

    cima.m wrote:

Please don't. People absolutely detest those things. MacOS X includes perfectly good VPN clients that work far better than any proprietary VPN. Why don't you just change the server to work with what ships with MacOS X?

  • DNS server's PTR record wrong?

I have a server I frequent that has an IP address of 10.1.1.2.  It acts as an OD and AD server, DNS server, IM server and a few other things.
As of now, the DNS server only has 1 entry in it, for the DNS server itself.  I got a request to add a second A record for a new accounting server.  Easy enough right?  I added an A record under my primary zone and made sure it was FQDN.  I went to ping it by name and by IP and no luck - no resolution.
Whats odd is when I look at my records, I have 2 groupings of PTR records.  One is my new one which makes sense : 1.1.10.in-addr.arpa.  The other is the one that the DNS server originally had: 2.1.1.10.in-addr.arpa.
I'm thinking this is why I can't get my new A record to work.
I really REALLY don't want to kill OD or AD here.  I know they lean on DNS to live.  I have to get this fixed though.  Can I delete both those records our of my primary zone, readd them, and all will work OK as long as I don't poke the primary zone?  I'm assuming I can't rename a PTR record directly, right?
Any help would be super-duper appreciated!  I have to fix this ASAP (obviously, right?).
    Thanks!

Your DNS server isn't really serving out much in the way of DNS, it's running the self-hosted configuration that's the default when no DNS services were established during the Mac OS X Server installation and configuration.
And if DNS services aren't right, then yes, the rest of the stack tends to be spotty.  Including OD.
Here is how to set up DNS on Mac OS X Server and then you should be able to migrate to correct DNS services without wrecking OD.  This if your existing domain choice and set-up for the self-hosted DNS was correct.
Basically, you get to nuke the existing forward and reverse zone (the default install creates one of each), and establish a forward zone for your domain name (and not the host's FQDN), and add your host name (which doesn't need to be an FQDN in this context) into the forward zone.  This will then apply the zone name to create the FQDN.   Server Admin should then establish one or more reverse zones, and as needed.
