EA6900 and Port 445

We recently purchased an EA6900 after our old WRT320N lost part of it's bandwidth.  With the old router, people on the local wireless network (192.168.x.x) had no problem connecting via SMB to our Yosemite server (172.16.x.x) but we can no longer make that connection via SMB (AFP still functions correctly via wireless.)
Doing a port scan using the old router and comparing it to the new router, I can see port 445 is not open on the new router and given that it is a MS port, I would say that is the culprit.  Is there anyway to get that port opened back up for the wireless users?
Thanks
Chris

Cascading a router into a network basically turns it into an AP with most of the router features still available. When cascaded nothing ever gets plugged into the router's WAN\Internet Port and it's DHCP is disabled.
In bridge mode many router features are disabled but setup is super easy because you just connect the router to the network via it's WAN\Internet Port and everything connect to the router normally. The main thing to keep in mind in bridge mode is that the network DHCP or IP is transmitted through the router. Making one big network.
Connectivity => Internet Settings => Edit and choose Bridge Mode
If you keep the router with Internet Settings DHCP or Static IP and connect the network to it's WAN\Internet Port this creates two separate network subnets. The network behind the router can see the network on the WAN but not the reverse because of the router's firewall and NAT.
Please remember to Kudo those that help you.

  • Port 445 NOT Open BIG PIC

Here is one that will make you pull your hair out.
T61p installed and worked perfectly for 2 months. Then one day, could not see the T61p from my desktop XP PC. After weeks of troubleshooting with serveral different "experts", it came down to this:
In Network Sharing Centre - Sharing & Discovery, all but the last 2 items are turned on.
When you select View Status of the Local Area Connection, click the Properties button , File & Print sharing for Microsoft Networks is NOT checked. Thus port 445 is NOT open. Thus other computers on local network CANNOT see the Vista PC. If you check the item, port 445 opens and all is well again in Netowrk land.
    The problem is:
Everytime I boot the PC, why is File & Print Sharing for Microsoft Networks NOT checked?
Some very bright minds have not been able to solve this yet. But please, give it a go if you think you understand the intricacies of Vista networking. The only answer I have found so far ... the usual last resort with Microsoft OS's ... clean install ... AGAIN!
    Thanks.

Sounds like the "Local Area Connection" you are using has lost it's BIND to file and print sharing.
    Vista >
When you open network connections in your Control Panel (I'm using classic view btw) > open the icon "Network and Sharing Center" >  then click in the left menu of that window "Manage Network Connections"
It will bring up the window with the old style box with all your network connections on your computer.
then follow this image attached to set the BINDING for file and print sharing on the matching local area connection that you use in your network.    Just check the boxes for "File and Print Sharing for Microsoft Networks"
Also, sometimes Vista gets confused if you move your laptop around like I do from Home to Work and both have DHCP assigned addresses, sometimes it sets the connection to "Private Network" for the new DHCP address it aquires and then your can't see it.   It should be set to PUBLIC for other machines to see it also.
Change that in your "Network and Sharing Center"

There is no big traffic for these connections other than some bytes, but the number of the requests are going up in hundreds on the 445 port. On blocking the port 445 on the firewall rule same connections were seen to go on 139.
How to detect why this connections are being generated.

    Hi,
As far as I know, Ports 445 and 139 are used for TCP session establishment and file/printer sharing traffic. Besides, Port 445 is also used for AD access and authentication by Microsoft-DS.
In addition, if the client has NetBIOS over TCP/IP enabled, it will always try to connect to the server at both port 139 and 445 simultaneously. If there is a response from port 445, it sends a RST to port 139, and continues its SMB session to port 445 only.
If there is no response from port 445, it will continue its SMB session to port 139 only if it gets a response from there. If the client has NetBIOS over TCP/IP disabled, it will always try to connect to the server at port 445 only.

  • Excessive Traffic on Port 445 between 2 Domain Controllers

Hi, my company has over 45 DC's across about 25 sites worldwide.  We are noticing a lot of traffic using wireshark and Network Monitor on Microsoft-DS port 445. I have been searching if this is normal and what I see is that it is used for SMB File and
print sharing. Well, I don't have any file shares on these DC's other than the normal admin shares and sysvol share. I don't believe this is replication traffic since these 2 servers are not replication partners. I have checked sites and services to make sure
the intersite and intrasite connections look good.   This traffic is constant over weeks and it is about 1 GB an hour between the 2 servers.  This would not be a big deal if this was just on the local LAN but it is over the WAN and
that saturates the line.   Should 2 DC's be talking that much that are not even replication partners?  What type of traffic could it be.  I am at a loss for troubleshooting this.  I have done packet captures but that really does
not tell me much ( that I can read anyway).  Oh, I have run AV scans alos and finding nothing.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Actually, DFS/FRS/DFSR replication is not related to NTDS replication. It uses a directory change notification event to trigger replication to a replica, and that is to all DCs in the domain. That's why you can have SYSVOL replication problems but AD replication
of the partitions do not have problems, such as when you create a user on one and it replicates to it's NTDS partner.
Below is a summary. You can read about how the whole process with NTFRS/DFSR works in the links below, if you like:
    Introduction to Administering DFS-Replicated SYSVOL
"DFS Replication technology significantly improves replication of SYSVOL. ... When a change to a file occurs, FRS replicates the entire updated file. With DFS Replication, for files larger than 64 KB, only the updated portion of the file is replicated."
"To replicate only updates to files, DFS Replication uses an algorithm called remote differential compression (RDC). RDC detects changes ... without having to replicate the entire file. RDC detects insertions, removals, and rearrangements of data
in files. The DFS Replication service monitors SYSVOL, and, if a change occurs to any file that is stored in SYSVOL, DFS Replication automatically replicates the file updates to the SYSVOL folders on the other domain controllers in the domain. "

DFS Replication: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc773238(v=WS.10).aspx
I think 316 MB in SYSVOL is a good amount of data. What is in there taking up that much space? Is something using SYSVOL to store it's data, such as an app that's constantly changing data?
The reason I'm asking is that this could be the cause of the issue, since if it changes on one DC, then it replicates, then another change occurs, etc., and it keeps going and it appears that a ton of data is being moved back and forth.
Quick story - I remember a customer was using SYSVOL to store data so they can access it across the WAN link. He said he did it because of its "cool" replication features. I said, yea, but it's meant for domain data (GPO policies, templates, etc.)
and not for custom data. Create a DFS share for that so it works independently of SYSVOL.

  • Network Drive Mapping for users who have Port 445 (possibly others) Blocked by their ISP to a Server 2008 system

Nice to see my original posts are still up.  I was hoping that in the ensuing time someone had found a solution.  At least I can now see many other posting the same problems.  :)  Thought I was losing it for a while.
We have 100% proven that the problem (in our case) is from the ISP blocking port 445 (possibly others but 445 for SURE) with the reasoning that it prevents the spread of some Internet "worms".  It also just happens to prevent people who work
from home from being able to map to their network drives at work.
What I was hoping was that eventually someone would comer up with a solution for this short of having to load a server using a different OS from Windows.  The SMB protocol is the one needing port 445 as far as I can tell.  Not all ISP block
port 445 and the laptops that use those ISP's  have no problem.  Unless they travel.  Then it is "hit or miss" as to whether the ISP for the Hotel they stay at blocks it.
I have run multiple tests to prove that this was in FACT the problem.  Even the particular ISP in question which is a very large national ISP company freely admits they do this supposedly to prevent the spread of an unnamed Internet Worm.  It also
happens to prevent Business use of their Internet by Home Subscribers at they cannot map to their Business Servers which also need port 445 to map.
I have used WebDAV successfully to get around this but at a huge loss of speed and performance.  Cloud services all do essentially the same thing and all have pretty much the same loss of speed.
If anyone has come across a method of allowing a drive mapping to be rerouted to any other port, that is the only hope I have short of changing to an alternate OS for the Office Server and even then I cant be sure until I try if it would help.  I read
somewhere about the possibility of routing through a proxy but again, the problem would still be that the requests for mapping are expected on port 445 on the server and they will not get through even to the proxy since the originating ISP is the one blocking
the port from the User's system.
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated  I have posted this question now for several years with no one yet providing a working solution.  Hope burns Eternal though :)

Yes, OwnCloud is an option as well as many others.  Even self hosted Cloud services such as the WD MyCloud all work.  The problem is speed.  JungleDisk is the best I have found so far.  I am not sure exactly what they use to allow the
drive mapping but it seems to work faster that anything else I have found.
VPN's don't work.  At least none of them I have tried.   I can connect a VPN with no problem.  But still cannot map a drive over it.   Actually, there are some issues with the VPN as well but these are just a matter of methodology.
Mapping to the FQDN works for some people while others require the public IP.  Some users on some ISP's can map using the FQDN, others have to map to the IP.  That in itself was a bit odd.
I have tried every trick I could find including adding  the IP and/or FQDN to the Windows Hosts file on the server as well as on the client systems.  This actually did help to get the VPN to connect in some cases.  However, it still would
not allow me to map a drive letter.
I can create a Network Place,  This also works.  But it will not allow me to MAP that "network place" to a drive letter.  I have tried multiple utilities that allow mapping of Drive letters to almost anything but they wont work to map to a
    Network Place.
The software that needs the mapped drive is a SQL database which runs on port 2004.  The program itself has no problems at all connecting to the server to run the database.  Even on systems which cannot map to the needed drive letter for the documents
referred to in the database.    Users can run it and look up all kinds of material but it it is only a half-solution since the database refers to files stored in a "common-mapped" drive letter.  Which I cannot Map.
I have tried every possible configuration of the VPN setup I could find, I have even tried a "Test System" with the NIC connected directly to the T1 Modem.  With all firewalls off and no AV software.  Even if that had worked,  there is no
way I could run like that.  But it didn't.  Same issues.  All this did was put the blame squarely on the User's ISP which was the only reason I did it.  I had to rule out even the slightest chance that it was something in our equipment.
This was already almost a certain fact since the same user could take their laptop to a WiFi Hotspot at a fast food restaurant and connect as well as map the drive.  As soon as they went back home, no drive.  On the ones I could convince to pay
the extra charges, if they switched to a business connection from their ISP, No Problems.
On most MiFi or other Cellular Internet devices, No Problem,  Although that had a habit of changing.  We had a few that worked for a while, then they got a software update for their MiFi which immediately blocked the ability to map.  Others
it would be that some models of Cellular HotSpot units worked while other would not work even if both came from the same carrier.
Coincidentally, we had none of these problems before two other events occurred:
One was the release of Server 2008 R2, (which was a kid of "surprise" change for all of us used to Server 2008 R1.  Welcomed changes, but not expected with a simple SP release.
The other was IPV6 finally became a reality:  June of 2012.
This left us with much head scratching as to what was the real cause of the problem.  It took months to narrow it down to port blocking by the Outside ISP's with a 100% certainty.  Even tried reloading a system with Server 2008 R1 just to rule
that out.  As well as disabling IPV6 on every network device.  The problem stayed with the User when Outside and which ISP they were connected to.
Currently we are using a mix of normal VPNs for those who can run them, and CLOUD access for those who can't.  Even this is problematic since we have to keep both the local copy and the cloud copy in constant sync so that everyone sees the same versions
of the same files on each one.
Sorry to make this so long but I wanted to cover everything to show that we tried it all.  The only thing left short of getting the ISP's to remove the port blocks would be to find a way to route the SMB file requests around port 445 in some way.
I have been told that this is easy enough if using a file system other than Windows but that is not an option even if true.
Thanks for the updates and ideas.  I keep hoping that eventually there will be some secure method for mapping a drive letter that does not depend on having port 445.

  • Can't connect to unc path, UNC using port 80 instead port 445

Can't connect to unc path, UNC using port 80 instead port 445,
    Please advise me,
    Regards,
    Lior

    Hi,
Can you successfully ping the UNC server? If the ping fails , it means that the UNC server is down, in this case, you should find the UNC server and check the running status.
If you can successfully ping the UNC server, the port number you specify should not be 80, because the 80 port is already used by default, So, in this case, you should ask the UNC server administrator to change to the default port number 445.

  • Port 445 taking up massive bandwidth, looking for explantion

    Good morning fellow IT workers!
I was looking at my netflow data today and noticed that users on remote sites were bypassing their Domain Controllers and going right to the main office's. All of this traffic was on port 445 (MicrosoftAD) from user workstations and was just curious
as to why this may be happening. Within the past two weeks its taken up 13.9GB on the circuit. While I have some general knowledge of AD, I'm hoping you fine people could point me in a better direction as to why port 445 on user workstations is bypassing the
remote site DC and going straight to the main site DC.
    Thank you in advance!

    Hi,
How many users are there in the remote sites?
Is there file sharing service on the domain controller? The file sharing service also use TCP/UDP port 445.
The TCP/UDP port 445 is not used by Active Directory directly. It is used by SMB. The AD uses SMB to transmit data.
Please run the command below on the client. It will tell us that which process sends the traffic.
    netstat -abon

  • Microsoft-ds port 445

CCM cluster consist of publisher server (CCM 4.1(2)sr1 ) and three subscriber servers. Problem is that subscribers generate large traffic (microsoft-ds, port 445, 200-300 kbps) to publisher server, constantly.
What could be a problem and is this port needed for normal communication between CCM servers?
Where to look for more information?
    thanks for any help...

https, aka 445, is used for ccm communication in 4.1x.; this should be OK as the subscribers are constantly communicating with the publisher, especially under specific configurations/circumstances.
i wouldn't say 200-300kpbs is 'a really large amount of traffic' even for a 10mb link; but you could be on to something.
this traffic is most likely the SQL replication between the call managers as well as other ccm management/call processing traffic that flows between servers in the cluster.
why the traffic moves and how much between the servers is fully dependent on the configuration of your ccm environment.
one excellent way to verify if there is any traffic you should not have between the servers is to use a sniffer. http://ethereal.com has an excellent free sniffer tool.
capture the traffic to/from the publisher and you can see exactly what traffic there is.

  • Visual Voicemail gone after upgrade to 2.0 (and porting number)

Anyone else experience this? I upgraded to 2.0 and at the same time I ported the old iPhone to another cell phone number on my account with ATT. The upgrade to 2.0 and porting appeared to go OK as everything else is working EXCEPT when on the phone application, I can not get the visual voicemail button to do anything. I press it and it acts like it is taking some time to open but it never brings up the visual voicemail screen. The phone part works as usual in all other ways.

I upgraded to the pre-release version of 2.0 and it worked fine. Then this morning i tried to update to the official 2.0 and it could not connect to iTunes, and that pinwheel kept spinning. So I pressed home button and power button until it (iPhone) rebooted. Then i connected it to iTunes and it asked me to restore.... So i pressed the option key (in mac, idk what it is in windows) and selected the prerelease version to downgrade to and now its fine. So...... good luck all

  • How to determine which IP address and port is used to make DNS queries?

I am using JNDI/DNS API to query a Enum server (Tel URI resolution in VOIP world) what is a DNS server.
But I have many network interfaces, in a VLAN environment, and I must to specify from which interface (and port)
    all the requests are sent.
When I read the code of JNDI/DNS API (in JDK 1.5) and specially the DNSClient class, I can see that the
    DatagramSocket is created without parameters... : udpSocket = new DatagramSocket();
How can I specify the IP address and port to use for my client???
    Thanks for your help.

I must to specify from which interface (and port) all the requests are sent. You don't have to specify the interface unless your static unicast routing tables are incorrect, and you never have to specify the port unless some lunatic is in control of your firewall.

  • FF keeps defaulting to the wrong HTTP proxy server and port. I have to change it every time I attempt to open Firefox? How do I change it for good?

The manual proxy settings keep defaulting to the wrong HTTP and port. This has caused me many hours of anguish. It works fine when I correct the settings but after you log off and then come back it has to be changed again. Is there anyway to fix it? Or can I go back to the previous version because 4 definitely has some issues (other than this one). I could live with it if I had to but I'm not the only one who uses this computer and they don't know how to make the changes. Thanks and I would definitely appreciate an answer.

  • Web Service Proxy with Dynamic IP and Port

    hi,
I am currently looking at the Web Service Proxy generation in JDev 11g. I can generate proxies fine, but the proxies are generated with static host and port. I want to substitute the host and port during runtime if required, for instance read the values from a database. I need to do this to avoid compiling the application for every deployment we make dev, test and production. Is there an easy way to set the generated proxy host and port? Are there any examples?
    Thanks in advance!
    Stephen

    Hi,
Maybe you should have a look on XML Catalogs feature, but I am not sure if JDeveloper support it and how to support it.

  • Xbox 360/one problem and port forwarding

For a couple months now (since I got my AirPort Extreme) I have not been able to connect to a certain friend on xbox. I can connect to anybody else however. The only way we can (kind of) connect is if somebody else is host and we both connect to him.
My NAT type is Moderate. When I try to test my connection on my xbox it says that I can connect but I am limited in matchmaking (this is joining games and using voice chat, which is the problem named above for my particular friend). The xbox shows the error and suggests that I enable UPnP or open the port 3074.
The problem is that I have already have! I gave my xbox a static IP and forwarded the port 3074 to that IP.
(I have also tried forwarding all the ports that xbox live uses to the xbox. These being:
    Port 88 (UDP)
    Port 3074 (UDP and TCP)
    Port 53 (UDP and TCP)
    Port 80 (TCP)
as found on the xbox website...  https://support.xbox.com/en-US/xbox-360/networking/network-ports-used-xbox-live
I made sure to put them in the right text boxes for UDP and TCP so that is not the problem either.)
I know that the AirPort Extreme does not support UPnP but does have a similar thing called NAT Port Mapping Protocol which was already enabled. (I tried all possibilities of enabling/disabling NAT...Protocol and port forwarding/not port forwarding.)  ---  This is not the solution as I see it
In short: My xbox tells me to open port 3074. I already have. It still tells me to open it and still won't work.
I posted this on the apple discussion page (instead of the xbox discussion page) because I know that it's not an xbox problem. When I had my old linksys router it worked perfectly.

I have this exact same question and problem.  I know this doesn't help, but would appreciate any updated information if you find an answer.  I'll keep working on this also and let you know if I find an anwer.
