Each Core at 2.16 GHZ ?

So I have this question, in the macbook pros, the intel duo core at 2.16 GHz, each core is running at 2.16? Or generally, the both cores can get to 2.16 ( or equiv) together?

I don't think so.
two cores literally mean two cores. a 2.16 ghz dualcore processor and a 2.16 ghz singlecore processor will both perform the same if they are working on a single thread.
To clarify the benefits of dual core, I'll use the same example of the genius child =P
Say you have two assignments for one genius child to complete. the child is only one person so to get the assignments done, it'll need to multitask between the two by switching between the two every so often. The child cannot work on both assignemnts at the same time. This is the same as a single core processor. It can only work on one thing at one time. It just switches between processes so fast that we don't even realize it. Going back to the analogy, if we have a 2nd child to work on the 2nd assignment, now we have both assignments being focused on without any interruption. This will lead to a faster complete time. With a dual core processor, we can burn a cd and extract a RAR file. They will run independantly without one interrupting the other. Because the processor does not need to switch between the two, the job will be done faster.
I know you probably already knew that, but I just like to add to that analogy

MacBook Pro 8,1 – Intel Core i5 – 2.23 GHz (early 2011) New with OSX 10.6 – current on all updates.
I successfully installed rEFit. I used Boot Camp to install Win 7.  All was great.
Then installed debian 6.  Somehow after the debian install and restart (I know this sounds crazy) but I am now reduced to Win 7 only. rEFit is not present when rebooting nor is OSX or debian. Further, I am unable to force the install DVD to launch when rebooting, by holding C, D or F8.  The Option key brings me to the grey screen with a padlock. I have attempted the root and local pw- no go. Restart holding D takes me to the windows boot manager. I have attempted several options within the Advanced Options; including – Repair Your computer, safe mode and “last known good config,” All of which did nothing.
I can see all my OSX files within win7. I tried to install the OSX within windows. Ya right, that did nothing..
I only desire to get back to OSX...
    What are my options??

Yes, you royally hosed up your machine.
You should first try to get your files off, any way you can to a external drive.
Your going to need to hold c and boot from the disk that came with your computer and a couple of screens in under the menu is a option for Disk Utility.
Select your drive and Erase with Security Option Zero, format the drive HFS+ Journaled and when that's finished (about a hour or so) then quit and install OS X from the installer.
I hope this works, but I suspect it won't. Others have hosed their machines trying to use a Linux disk without proper partition formatting too.
Another option might be to use another Mac to c boot off the Snow Leopard disk and install OS X onto a external drive, take that to the problem Mac and try holding option and booting off of it to erase your internal drive.
    You could replace the drive.

Is this holding option while booting?
There was someone else around here who hosed their Mac with a Linux disk too. Try to find it.

    Hi,
I have tried to search the community but I'm not getting any wiser. It all started when i installed Mavericks on my Mac Pro. Now I formatted the SSD and re-installed Mountain Lion 10.8.5 and it has gotten worse. I don't understand what has happend.
    Anyone know what to do?

Which O/S upgrade is recommended for a MAC Book Pro17 with Intel Core Duo 2.16 GHz
    I am using os x 10.4.11.
Do I need to upgrade to 10.5.xx? Will this platform suport 10.6.xx? If 10.6 will work do I need to install 10.5 first?
    Thanks...

Hi. Your computer can be upgraded to either Leopard 10.5 or Snow Leopard 10.6. 10.6 will be much easier to find and will be less expensive. Leopard is not required prior to upgrading to Snow Leopard.

    Hi There.
    MacBookPro 8,1, 2 processors, Intel Core i7, 2.8 GHz, 4 GB.
    Mac OS version: 12C60
My friend has bought a new MacBook with specs mentioned above. I have upgraded the OS to Mountin Leon 10.2 succefully. However, after that the machine started making beeps everytime I shut it down and does not stop beeping untill I push the power button again for a few seconds and next time when I start it up, an error message appears saying that "Your computer restarted because of a problem. Press a key or wait".
I have a copy of the full report of this error.
Any help with this to get rid of this annoying problem would be very appreciated.
    Thanks.

Find below the latest version of the report, hopefully it's of some worth.

  • My new iMac 27 i7 quad core (early 2011) is slower than the iMac 21 core duo  3,06 ghz (late 2009).

hello i've just bouth my new imac 27" ( spring 2011) with  quad core i7 3,4ghz  4gb ram and 2gb ati radeon graphics..
I've proceded with the migration assistent and just copied my old configurations, programs and datas from the old one ( imac late 2009 27" 8gb ram intel core duo 3,06 ghz, 256mb ati radeon graphics) to the new one...now they are twins with boot lion 10,7,2..what i've just discovered? that the old one is a litttle faster than the new one.
    photoshop is opening faster
and more or less all the adobe suite..
is that a joke? how is that possible? i can think that the  issue is all about the RAM (4gb new imac, 8gb old imac)..
    could someone help me please?
    thankyou.
    Andre

As far as I am aware iMacs do not have upgradeable CPUs.

There's 8 different models of MacBooks that are 2.0Ghz. To see which model you have go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info (and then System Report if you’re running 10.7 Lion). When System Profiler comes up check the Model Identifier.

One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.

  • Upgrading RAM for an iMAC  Intel Core i5 2.8 GHz Quad Core - Late 2012 (I'm guessing).

I have an iMAC Intel Core i5 2.8 GHz Quad Core - Late 2012 (I'm guessing).  I am trying to upgrade the RAM of my iMAC and I am not sure how to go about it. Running on OSx 10.6.3
This iMac has 4 slots - Currently my RAM is using 2 slots with 4 GB so I have 8 GB right now.
The speed is 1333MHz. Now I have some RAM that could get to 32GB but the 4 RAM chips speed is
    1866 MHz.
Would it be possible to swap my old RAM (8GB) 1333MHz for the new 1866mhz RAM? even with the difference in speed?  The RAM is from Crucial.
If possible I can try and swap the RAM if I get inside my iMAC.

If you are really running 10.6.3, then you do not have a 2012 machine. Please check to see if this is yours (it's a 2010):
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/imac/specs/imac-core-i5-2.8-27-inch-alumin um-mid-2010-specs.html
It also mentions the exact specs of the RAM. I would only use the RAM supported by Apple; using the higher speed rated RAM will not result in higher speed.

  • 15"Macbook Pro fall 2011 with Core i7 2.0 GHZ, 8GB RAM v/s 2013 Macbook Air 13". Is it a good upgrade?

    HI All
This is my first post here. As mentioned I have a fall 2011 15"Macbook Pro fall 2011 with Core i7 2.0 GHZ, 8GB RAM and i was thinking of buying a 2013 Macbook Air 13". Is it a good upgrade? I do light video editing and day to day tasks like word processing, email etc.
How would the performance of the Macbook Air with the Core i5 with 4 gb Ram be compared to the old Macbook Pro 15 with Core i7 Quad 2.0 ghz with 8 GB Ram.
    Thanks
    Sunny

The main advantage would be a solid state drive. This will improve performance and speed moreso than RAM considerations. The disadvantage will be a loss of storage space. Moreover, one of the disadvantages of a SSD is that the more storage space used on it, the slower it becomes and the quicker it will deteroriate.
If you do video editing, I would take the GPU into consideration. Does your 15'' come with a discrete GPU? The integrated GPU on the MBA (intel HD 5000) is better than the 2011 MBP integrated GPU (3000), but it includes no discrete GPU.
Depending on how much storage space you use on your HDD currently + how many graphics intensive programs you run, you may want to consider upgrading your current machine with a SSD, upgrading your RAM on current machine to 16 gb (~160$ through macmemory or newegg), or purchasing a new Macbook Pro rather than Macbook Air.
    Last thing I would add:
You will never be able to upgrade MBA RAM. It is soldered to the logicboard on the new models, non-retina included. You may wan to opt with the 8 GB RAM configuration.

  • Quad-core Westmere 3.33 GHz or Quad-core Westmere 2.4 GHz for FCS

    1. Quad-core Westmere 3.33 GHz (1 processor/6 cores)
    2. Quad-core Westmere 2.4 GHz (2 processors/8 cores)
According to digloyd tests and reviews on the new Mac Pro the 3.33/6 cores Mac is the sweet spot for photographers, but I´m still in doubt about the best machine for VIDEO with the current Final Cut Studio and even in a year or two with the expected new 64 bits FCS version, better use of the multicores, etc; the same for Photoshop and others.
Between these two brand new machines, in a + - equal price range what could be the best option?
    Thanks in advance.
(this an hardware question but I asking the FCS forum too; thank you all)

And you should have stumbled on his "avoid the 2.4" as well as some models lack L2 Cache.

He himself is using 12-core 3.33 custom outfit. Apple only offers 2.93 in dual processor.
So I would say stay away from any quad core. And dual quad is usually called 8-core and has done so since Mac Pro debut.

  • Are there two different Core i7 2.0 Ghz CPU's for the 15" MBP?

I noticed on Geekbench that some people are getting Intel Core i7-2635QM @ 2.00 GHz CPU's and some are getting Intel Core i7-2620QM @ 2.00 GHz CPU's.
Same clock speed but different performance outcomes. The 2620 chip comes in around 6800-7000 in performance while 2635 gets 8800-9000 which is much closer to the i7-2720QM chip.
Intel does offer both 2620 and 2635 CPU's and I'm trying to figure out if different chips are being sent from Apple or if it is a case where some people chose the wrong CPU in Geekbench. However, wouldn't Geekbench automatically select the CPU that is is testing.
Please chime in and let me know. Below are the links to the tests.
    2635QM chip, http://browse.geekbench.ca/geekbench2/search?q=2635&commit=Search
    2620QM chip, http://browse.geekbench.ca/geekbench2/search?q=94245B3640C91C81+&commit=Search
I also noticed people with 64-bit software of Geekbench are getting higher scores, obviously.

You probably saw bench for the 13" Core i7 MacBook Pro that use an Intel® Core™ i7-2620M processor, which is a dual core (not quad core) core i7 @ 2.7GHz.

  • Is it worth it to buy a new 8 Cores having a Quad-Core 2 x 3 GHz?

In a previous thread I saw Mike Connelly saying that:
Logic doesn't really support 8 cores (including the hyperthreading), and doesn't >provide much of a performance difference between the 4 and 8 core machines, >particularly if the quad is a higher clock speed.
So Mike, as far as you state, I can understand that at present, if I change my 2 x 3 GHZ Quad-Core Intel Xeon with an 8 cores Nehalem I wouldn't get much performance difference..
    Is it?

You have an eight core machine already? If that's the case, I definitely wouldn't bother updating yet. At least not until Logic is updated or they announce even faster macs (which hopefully should be soon).
If you want to see better performance, I'd spend the cash on faster drives or something else.
