I am very disappointed to. I have an iPad 2, out of warranty for 6 months. When I went in to have them look at it the only offer I got was to swap it out for $240. I spoke with the manager, who just kept repeating I should have gotten Apple Care. I told him about reading all the other people that lost their mic on line, and it must be a defect. He told me not to believe everything you read on line. I am trying to tell everyone about this. iPad 4 has the same problem!
So any new iPad have this checked out!

Particularly:
Battery does not charge
Verify that the outlet being used is working.
Try another USB power adapter if available.
If no other USB power adapter is available, try connecting to a high-power USB 2.0 port (not a keyboard). The computer must be turned on and not in sleep or standby mode.
Try another USB cable if available.
iPhone or iPod touch displays the low-battery image and is unresponsive
If you see the image below, charge the iPhone or iPod touch with USB power adapter for at least 15 minutes.
You should see this image when iPhone or iPod touch begins to charge:
If the screen still displays the low-battery icon, try turning the iPhone or iPod touch off and then on again.
If the issue persists, follow these troubleshooting steps.

If your iPad is still in warranty, show it to an Apple Store Genius. If the Genius can not fix it, you may get a replacement iPad on the spot.
If your iPad is out of warranty, or there is no Apple Store near you, look for an Apple Authorized Repair Center. There may be one in your city. If out of warranty, they should be able to repair the microphone for less than the Apple Store's replacement price. <Apple Authorized Repair Centers>

Double tap Home button, delete Find Friends by swiping UP the app's preview in multitask-list.
Press Home button when finished.
Do a Reset: Hold down the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears. Note: You will not lose any data
Start Find Friends again.

I have had this problem too. I tried all sorts of things but fould a really simple solution in my case. I took it to the store and the genius person said the problem was with the screen and it would need to be replaced. I had taken apart my iPhone 3 to change the bttery and saw the tiny ribbon cables that connected the various parts to the screen and thought maybe one was loose. Since I couldn't use the phone anyway I had little to lose. I just banged the bottom edge of the phone on my desk several times. Aabout 5 solid hits. And the microphone started working again. This also worked for me when pushing the home button failed to turn on the screen. Note that I have a strong Speck case so I wasn't hitting the metal edge of the phone on the desk.
There are probably lots of reasons for the mic to stop working but in my case i think it was just a loose connection from being dropped too many times.

I had the same issue here. bottom microphone not working on my iPhone4. tested an dtried some different apps and came up with the following:
during voice call: bottom mic not working
during facetime: YES other side can hear me
memorecorder: YES sound is recorded
video: YES sound is recorded
I've searched around the web and the apple support pages, and found some simple options to be taken to resolve the issue:
1 clean out the 2nd (noise cancellation) microphone (which is the little pinhole right beside the earphone jack)
2 restart the device (eliminating virtually all software / app malfunctions)
3 reset network settings in settings menu (eliminating network issues)
4 full factory reset on iPhone4 (make sure to back it up properly before) (why should this be the resolution if the restart didn't do it before?).
5 open up the backside and insert a little piece of cardboard (about 160gr/m2) as per the attached video:

6 go to the apple store / make an appointment with the genius bar
neither 1, 2 nor 3 resolved my issue with the bottom mic during voice calls (I still could hear the other side, they could here nothing, or some static and crackling from my side). as gathered the 4th possiblity would not to make the difference (i got convinced this was more a hardware than software issue), i jumped to option 5.
AND IT WORKS NOW!!! yippieeeee (what would an iPHONE be if you can't call....)
all you need is a steady hand, good eyes and a ph00 or ph000 screwdriver.

Did you already try to reset the phone by holding the sleep and home button for about 10sec, until the Apple logo comes back again? You will not lose data by resetting.
If this did not work, and to rule out a software issue, setting it up as new device would be the next step:

If still no luck, this might be a hardware problem and the phone has to be checked by an Authorized Apple Service Provider or Apple:

The full functionality of the Realtek Drivers or even the audio configuration in Skype may be invalid due to a recent software update on your computer or hardware change. An update of your audio drivers can resolve both problems.
Try the latest (v2.71 04/2013) generic Realtek "High Definition Audio Codecs" drivers to see if it resolves the problem. I use these drivers on my computers that are compatible and have not run into any issues. They are available at the link below:

Installing the drivers is generally a two-stage procedure. On it's own it will uninstall your existing drivers, prompt you to reboot, then it will install the latest release after the reboot. You would probably want to reboot one more time afterward. Also be aware that it is recommended to have Mic boost set to zero when using Skype, but the lowest setting where it currently is at may suffice as well.

Try this - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. IOs4 upgrade, Now car stereo doesnt work with iphone

upgraded to Ios4 a few hours ago. Went to my car and plugged it into the usb port of my pioneer stereo and it says " Not compatible "
My stereo has always worked with my iphone.

I've got the AutoPilot from Griffin, and I haven't seen any issues with it. Anyone with one of those and have concerns shouldn't worry; it'll continue to work.
Granted, it interfaces with the iPhone via the dock connector, but eventually goes into the car's audio system via the auxiliary jack, so the USB connection is probably what the issue is with other audio systems.
I've also noticed the "This accessory isn't meant for your device" message doesn't give you the choice of going into Airplane Mode; it just reminds you that you'll probably get interference.

Is the built-in microphone listed as an input device in the Sound preference pane or in the Skype preferences dialog?
If it isn't, there's a slim chance you might be able to solve the problem by booting in safe mode and then rebooting as usual, or by resetting the SMC.

If those steps don't work, there's an even slimmer chance that you might solve the problem by reinstalling OS X. Your profile says you're running 10.6.8. You would need your installation disc to reinstall that, which you probably don't have with you.
Failing all that, you might be able to use a USB microphone, if you can find one. Don't buy another analog microphone with a mini-audio connector. It won't work.

The hands free mic is the upper mic and should be working fine. Otherwise the logic board is faulty. If you can only perform hands free calls, then the lower mic is faulty. The replacement part is the iPhone charging port with flex cable and lower mic, about $5 part.

Try logging out of your account on the iPhone by tapping on your id in Settings > iTunes & App Stores and then log back in and see if that 'refreshes' the account on it.

Have you tried any other headphones? If other headphones work it's probably defective earbuds which are covered by the phones 1 year limited warranty. If other headphones do not work, then either your headphone jack is bad (also covered by warranty) or your settings need to be adjusted.

My ipod touch 5 microphone doesnt work.

I have tried cleaning the microphone hole (betrween camera lense and flash) but it still will not pick up any volume from my voice unless my mouth is right up against the mic. Please help.
