Earbusting zap noise on sound initialization

Anybody know what in is causing this?  I had OSS installed before and tried to switch back to alsa.  Sound works at correct volume, but the title says it all.  When initialized it tries to make your head explode.

Okay, figured it out.  It was when sound initialized with Flash 10.  Because of a compatibility package I was using for OSS4 called libflashsupport.  Was strange because it didn't always do it, but it's really a nasty issue.  I was gonna submit a bug report for the alsa package in hopes to make it a conflicting file or just submit a report on libflashsupport but I'm having password trouble.
edit:  cool, got into bugtracker. I think it should be applied to alsa, since installing alsa did not pick up on the package conflict of libflashsupport.

  • Desktop has a noise that sounds like the fan

I turned on my IMAC desktop and there is a noise that sounds like the fan. The computer is very quiet till now. What should I do?

iStat Pro does not quite work "as always" with newer systems.
For one thing, it may report inaccurate temperatures (& possibly fan speeds), depending on the Mac model it is running on. (For instance, on my system, it tells me the ambient temperature is around 54° F in a room that is actually about 77°.)
The problem is basically that iStat Pro gets temperature & fan speed info by querying the SMC subsystem. Apple has apparently changed the query/response protocols or the SMC hardware itself, so this no longer works as the utility expects.
And Banjo is not as "safe" and digs too deep with core kexts.
Banjo is the new name for the same company that developed iStat Pro & the original & newer iStat Menus programs. My guess is that the latest version of iStat Menus is just as safe to use as the earlier ones.
However, I won't use it for the same reason I won't use MenuMeters: both rely on MenuCracker, a hack to work around Apple's restriction of menu extras to ones Apple develops & distributes as part of the OS itself. Developers are specifically told to use 'Status Items' for their menu bar add-ons, which offer some but not all of the same functionality as menu extras, & do not risk destabilizing the OS or compromising its security.

Probably is. They get dusty. Shut down your computer and clean it out with a vacuum (don't blow dust back inside).

  • The noise or sound on start up?

Hi i have the G5 when you push the power button to turn the system on it makes a start up sound. I have an external hard drive connected via usb and a tablet.
Sometimes the mac will start up after the first sound and other times it will make the same noise 3 or 4 times before it starts up. Is this normal? I thought it was the tablet as the blue indicator light, when it makes 3 or 4 sounds doesnt illuminate. If it does it boots after the first.
So, i unplugged the tablet and 1 noise and was booting up. Then it made 2 or 3 noises again hmm?
My question is. Is it because of external devices that it irregularly starts up or is it normal and nothing to be concerned about?
    Thanks in advance.
    Nick

Well, it is certainly unusual to be hearing them repeated unless you happen to be simultaneously holding the down the command option p r keys when you start up the machine! (this resets the PRAM).
One possibility may be a power cord that isn't fully pushed into place. Sometimes the little "collar" on the power cord where it attaches to the computer can stop it fitting properly.
Another may be a dying PRAM battery. If you have one of the earlier imac G5s these are very easy to replace (and the battery used is the very common CR2032 used in many caculators, kitchen scales, etc and available at any electrical parts shop, or probably even your local supermarket.) If it is an iMac with a built in "iSight" camera, though you should take it to a dealer for replacement.
The external devices are unlikely to be causing the problem in this case, but it would be worth disconnecting them and seeing what happens.
    Cheers

  • Soundcard broken? noise/distorted sound in headphonejack with no relation to played audio

Sitting on a HP 625, a month ago or so I started experiencing this weird noise when the headphonejack is used, no matter what is connected (soundsystem, headphones etc). The sound starts off like a low hz distortion and gains to a very high pitched, cutting, unpleasant sound. This takes app 2-5 seconds and then totally disappears for a while until it comes again. It doesnt really matter if im playing something, the sound comes on at all times.
Would be amazingly thankful if anyone with knowledge of this problem and its solution would help.
    Thanks!
(if its sound specific, i could try to record what it sounds like and attach, just tell me)

  • Noise on sound output

I'm just trying out an external drive on my Macbook Pro. I happened to have the internal sound output from the Mac connected at the time and noticed that as soon as I connected the drive to the mains, the output became very noisy: as continuous series of clicks at about 15 Hz. I thought it was the drive, but I think it's some sort of grounding issue as connecting my FW interface led to noise on the internal MAc outputs too (a different type of noise!). It seems to happen with either FW400 or 800.
I have no intention of using the output for anything serious - I was just listening to some CDs whilst wiring up - but is this normal?

I'm also experiencing this issue. I have some external speakers (razer mako) connected to the headphone jack on my 15" Unibody MBP (purchased last month). I get some intermittent line noise. Additional hissing and clicking which seems to correspond to activity on the computer (e.g. external drive connectivity).
There is no line noise connecting to my iPhone or other audio source.

  • X-Fi Fatality Pro High-Pitched Speaker Noise, No Sound or Tinny Sound Win

Hi all,?Perhaps this is premature but... I've had the X-Fi FPS for about three weeks now and everything was working fine until about a week ago. Here's the problem: Upon cold start of loading?XP there is either no sound and/or high-pitched noise coming from my 2. speakers, or just horrible tinny sound with the volume cranked. If I reboot, sound works perfectly. If I do another reboot, the sound will resort back to the noise/tin, etc. or perhaps it might be ok. Same issue with the?IO?card. I've reinstalled the drivers, but that didn't help the problem. Currently in PCI slot 3... I haven't moved it to 4 but will do so tonight and do a clean install of the software. I was cleaning out the dust from the internals and used a "Dust-Off" type product inside of the case...is it possible that the card "froze" and is now itself unstable? I've run the creative diagnostics and says everything is fine. Perahps it's just a system?issue. I plan on doing a full system wipeout and reinstall as well but wanted to see if?this situation is a known issue. -Dell XPS Gen 2-3.2ghz; 2gig Ram-ATI 9800XT (AGP, also takes up PCI slot )-Linksys Wireless G Network card (PCI slot 2)-X-Fi (PCI Slot 3)-Ultra Firewire card (PCI slot 4)-SATA HDs-LITE-ON? • Noise Reduction sounds like gurgling underwater

    Hi folks,
Is there a better explanation to the effect I hear when i use the noise reduction on a clip?

opps, sorry..hit send too soon... here's the rest of the question...
    Hi folks,
Is there a better explanation to the effect I hear when i use the noise reduction on a clip?
When I dial up the reduction it sounds like gurgling, weather I have a stereo or mono clip. Like it's phase shifting. Underwater... I'm sure you've all heard it, I just don't know if I should be reducing a tiny bit of the noise at a time and just repeat it till it sounds best...?
    thanks.

  • Audio outputs white noise /static sound

I recently purchased HP Envy 700-327C.
Out of the box, I noticed a constant static / white noise whenever I plug a headphone into the audio out jack from the headphone.  It is the same noise from the front or rear jack.  It is very noticeable when no sound is playing.  I have tried multiple headphones and speakers with the same problem.  When I mute the sound, the noise stops.  If I increase the volume, the noise level doesn't change.  I have disabled the mic and also reinstalled the driver. I even tried to use the generic windows sound driver.  I have an older HP desktop at home before and an HP at work and never had this issue.   Is there anything else I can do?

    Hello hppoweruser2014,
Welcome to the HP Forums, I hope you enjoy your experience! To help you get the most out of the HP Forums I would like to direct your attention to the HP Forums Guide First Time Here? Learn How to Post and More.
I understand that your desktop is producing a static noise from the headphone jack on your desktop, and I would be happy to assist you! To begin, I will need to ask you a few questions:
What is the Product and Model Number of your desktop computer?
What version of Windows do you have installed on your computer?
Has your computer completed all of its important Windows Updates?
Is there static emitted when there is sound being produced?
Have you updated your HP drivers using the HP Support Assistant?
Does this same issue occur with the audio jack in the back of your desktop (the jack in between the top and bottom)?
If you boot your computer in Safe Mode, is there still a static sound produced in the front of the computer?
In the meantime, I recommend following this document on No Sound from the Speakers or Headphones (Windows 7). This should help correct the static being emitted from the front headphone jack.
Please re-post with the results of your troubleshooting, as well as the requested information above. I look forward to your reply!

  • Loud noise/crackling sound from speakers

I have a CoreDuo 2ghz MacBook that is about 5 months old. It's already been in the shop to have a faulty heat sensor replaced (it was randomly just shutting down).
I also have to take it in because the case has become really discolored in areas.
But now I have this awful problem whereby the speakers are sending out really loud crackly noise. It just sitts there sending out this awful noise. Even if I turn the sound off, the crackling still comes from the area of the speakers.
Has anyone else had this problem?
    Chris

The problems been noted on this forum before - For Example ...but there's been no proposed solution. Perhaps when you bring your top case in for the discoloration issue you can have them check the wiring around the speakers.

  • Headphone noise (pop sound) heard when switching to audio.

Has anyone encountered a popping noise when the start listening to audio (MP3s, starting a call, etc.) through their headphones?  I am wondering whether this may be a design flaw, a setup issue, a hardware problem with my BB Curve 8830 or with the headphones themselves.  I am using the headphones that came with the unit.  I have had this problem from day one and it's really irritating.  Thanks, Dan.

I have the same problem, actually two different pops.  The first is a loud pop when using any kind of headphone or speaker, right when the music is about to start, almost identical to the old pop when one placed a needle down on a vinyl LP.  (Anyone here young enough to remember those?)
The second is a softer but clearly audible pop between songs - however - this one is only audible using certain headphones and particularly speakers (like PC speakers).   What is with this?  Surely this is fixable - hello RIM ??
Any hints appreciated.  My Curve is new, from Verizon, and appears to be using system 4.3.  Will look into updates on that.
Not to hijack the thread, but perhaps I can toss out my other Media Player problem.  I had trouble downloading with WMP and Roxio so I am using MediaMonkey - I can get songs, album art, and even playlist names but when I check the playlists on the Curve, they are empty.   Anyone run into this?  I have MMS enabled, USB support, etc.    Thanks !
