Earlier Skype Versions - Mac OS X 10.4.11 (Tiger)

How can I get Skype for a Mac running Tiger?  I have an old laptop and I don't want to upgrade to 10.5, but I don't want to run Skype 2.8.

Hi,
Versions older than 2.8 are available from oldapps.com.

How does this affect Skype for Symbian which is a really old version of Skype? Will it still work after the cut off date or is it already dead?

Symbian users who already have Skype installed in their phones will still be able to use the app. However, once they uninstall the Skype app, they will no longer be able to redownload it from the Store. It looks like Skype for Symbian is now officially dead.

  • Just what is the newest Skype version for mac?...

I keep getting messages about a new skype version, or my skype keeps wanting to update but wont... The version I've got currently is version 6.19 (422). Is this the most latest one? Because it never actually tells you what skype version you are downloading/updating to on the website...
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Just ignore the updating, Skype is maintained now according to MS standard.
See my post about "NO to upgrades". The problem is that there are different versions for every platform, and they have no release policy, so the moment a new version is made for MS Windows, they try to do the same on all the other platforms.
Sorry Skype, but learn quickly never to touch anything that works. So upgrading is something you should never do, that may render you Skype useless. If it works, do not touch it. If it fails, go look for an old version that works. The novelty they have introduced is more bugs and slower systems, integration with Microsoft accounts (which I do not have) and they are probably working hard to replace servers out in the net, with their servers which is doomed to be a disaster.
    Never change software that works!

  • Skype on Mac - /alertsoff (still) does not work in...

    Hi there,
unfortunately you've closed this thread (http://community.skype.com/t5/Mac-archive/alertsoff-doesn-t-work-Skype-team-please-fix-the-bug/m-p/7... without fixing the bug.
I'm on OSX Yosemite (10.10.3) and when typing /alertsoff in a group chat I still get notifications. Skype version is 7.7 (335).
Can you fix this or is there a workaround?
    Best
    Konstantin

Yes there is. I've already activated the "Do not notify me" option but this only deativates the notification popups in the rop right corner. The conversation still gets the orange  circle about new unread messages. And I want to be in channels and read there but don't get the info about new messages in some of that. That's what the command /alertsoff is for. This is possible on Windows. Why not on Mac?

  • Skype on Mac OS X 10.5.8

Hi! Struggling to get Skype working again on MAC OS X 10.5.8 I repasted into the Info.plist but now I have lost video. Which version will solve all bugs?

We're sorry to hear that this has caught you off guard. As you pointed out, we began the process of dropping support for 10.5 about 9 months ago. At this point, that process has been completed and you are no longer able to use Skype on Leopard. We sent out several emails warning about this, as well as providing an alert on Skype Home.
At this point, your only option to continue using Skype for Mac is to upgrade to 10.6. Apple charges $20 for this upgrade, and you can get it here: http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
You can of course continue to use Skype on other platforms, including iOS and Android. You could also create a Skype Number to call your fiancee (and another to have you fiancee call you) using the PSTN phone network. This wouldn't involve video, but could still be cheaper than placing an international call directly. You can purchase these things on the Skype website by logging in using your Skype name.
If you want to use video chat, you will need to upgrade your OS. As covered in another thread on this topic, Skype is the last major VOIP provider to drop support for Leopard. More information on why we have done this is available here:

  • What is the best soft wear update for a mac desktop with   System Version:     Mac OS X 10.5.8

What is the best soft wear update for a mac desktop with   System Version:
    Mac OS X 10.5.8

It will depend on the actual model you have.
Upgrade Paths to Snow Leopard, Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion or Mavericks from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99 while Mavericks is free. To access the App Store you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later installed.
    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard — Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
               terms apply.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service — this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
Upgrading to Mountain Lion or Mavericks
To upgrade to Mountain Lion or Mavericks you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase and download Mountain Lion or Mavericks (Free) from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.

Which OS X version should we or can we upgrade to?

A retail 10.5 Leopard disk will run you over $200 since they haven't been made for over 4 years so they're getting pretty rare.
The 10.6 Snow Leopard DVD is in the Apple online store. You can get it for $19.99. You will need to be running 10.6.8 to access the App Store to order Lion or Mountain Lion. http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
You can upgrade from 10.4 straight to 10.6 with no problems as long as you have at least 1gb of RAM. Any program that runs under 10.4 should run under10.6. See this list for third party programs compatibility with 10.6: http://snowleopard.wikidot.com/  You might have to upgrade some drivers for printers, etc.... And you will have to install Rosetta if you have any Power PC applications
    http://www.macobserver.com/tmo/article/snow_leopard_installing_rosetta/
I recently upgraded an older MacBook (Early 2006 model 1,1) straight from 10.4 to 10.6.
Once you are at 10.6.8 if you want to upgrade further Lion is still available from Apple. You will have to call Apple Customer Care 1-800-692-7753 or 1-800-676-2775. to purchase it. Then within 3 days you will get an email with a code which you can use to download Lion from the App Store.  The price is $19.99.
You must have at least a Late 2006 model 2,1 MacBook.
Lion will require at least 2gb of RAM but really needs 4gb to run smoothly.
As for third party programs see this list for compatibility with 10.7 http://roaringapps.com/apps:table
Also Lion doesn't run any Power PC programs. To see if you have any Power PC programs go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info. When System Profiler comes up select Applications under Software. Then look under Kind to see if any of your applications are listed as Power PC. Universal and Intel will run under Lion.
Before Mac switched to Intel processors in 2006 they used Power PC processors from 1994 to 2005. Power PC 601 through 604, G3, G4 and G5. Applications written for the Power PC processors need the application called Rosetta to run on Intel processors. This was part of the Operating System in 10.4 and 10.5 but was an optional install in 10.6. With 10.7 Lion Apple dropped all support for Power PC applications.
First we need to know which one of the 9 different models of MacBook you have. To see which model you have go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info. When System Profiler comes up check the Model Identifier and post it back here.
    The model 2,1 (Mid 2007) can use 3gb of 200 pin 667mhz PC2-5300 RAM
    The model 3,1 (Late 2007) can use 6gb of 200 pin 667mhz PC2-5300 RAM

  • Skype for mac os 10.5.8 / very disappointed about...

Since many years I payed a subscription "unlimited Europe" to use skype with mac os 10.5.8 but from yesterday the programme dont' work and ask me to update the programme mac os 10.6? I am very angry and disappointed about it. Until yesterday I used skype version 6.3., please can you support me in this, how is possible to continue use mac os 10.5.8, there is some  method with info.plist????

    Hi,
I can attest that this fix below works ... in both OS 10.4.11 and in 10.5.8 ...
    Note:
You will first need to download Skype version 2.8.0.866 for Mac, to get this exact result.
This fix may work for this latest mess created by MS cutting off a far newer version for use with 10.5.8 just the other day ...
but I decided to go back to version 2.8.0.866, because it is a far better design and more useful to me than the newer versions ...
however, it has been handicapped in one way ... The video call function in it no longer works, it is audio calls only ... not sure if the conference calling works, because I never use it .... but works fine otherwise.
Here is the posting I got this information from. It is a very helpful group, which has been addressing fixing these types of issues since MS first began creating these problems ... unnecessarily so, I should add ...
    http://community.skype.com/t5/Mac/My-solution-to-continue-using-Skype-2-8-on-older-OS-X-Lion-etc/td-...
    1) Quit Skype.
    2) Locate /Applications/Skype.app, right-click on it and click "Show package content".
    3) Open the folder "Content", then inside, open Info.plist either with Property List Editor (more convenient) or any other normal text editor.
    4) Search for your old version string (like 2.8.0.866) and replace it with the new one (6.15.0.334). In PLE, you do this by clicking on the value two times and then editing it, in other editors just search&replace.
    5) Save your changes, exit the editor, start Skype and login.
Additionally, in Mac OS 10.4.11 you can not directly edit that Info.plist file ... in this situation, it is necessary to open a new Text Edit file, then copy and paste the entirity of the original file, and rename it with the same name ... then make the necessary edits to the new file ... then remove the original file from that folder and replace it with the new one ... make sure it is working properly before trashing the original ...
That is an important file, so be very meticulous and careful with those edits ...
    Hope this helps!
    Sincerely
